Schlumberger defines the True Meaning of a Thriving Business Partner
Fort Bend ISD’s partnership with Schlumberger represents the true meaning of a mutually beneficial, long-term relationship – one that is preparing students for success inside and outside of the classroom. Over the years, Schlumberger has provided FBISD students with various learning opportunities to help them gain knowledge and skills that will prepare them for futures beyond what they can imagine.
This year, Schlumberger funded a $107,555 Fort Bend Education Foundation (FBEF) grant to support Computer Coding Camps at 24 FBISD schools. The unique partnership between Schlumberger, the FBEF and FBISD’s Digital Learning Department has made it possible for students to explore computer coding and robotics programs, as well as STEM-focused curriculum (in science, technology, engineering and math).

Fort Bend ISD mentors define success as working togetherFairmount Santrol works closely with Lakeview Elementary School staff to support student needs
Henry Ford once said that “coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; and working together is success.” That sentiment can very well be the driving force behind the successful mentoring partnerships that Fort Bend ISD schools share with community and business groups. FBISD is fortunate to have the support of individuals who devote their time and energy to serving as mentors. These wise and trusted individuals provide students with the added attention and guidance they need to be successful in life. Students at Lakeview Elementary School are benefitting from a mentoring partnership between their school and Fairmount Santrol. Scientists and other employees of the company have adopted the school, and visit once a week to mentor students who have academic challenges or disciplinary issues. They also serve as club sponsors, work in the school’s garden and provide financial support to help improve students’ educational experience.
Scientist Bill Horadam mentors two second-graders at the school. “I find it ex-tremely humbling to serve as their mentor,” said Horadam. “There are many times when I leave them at their classroom and they ask, Can I have more time? It feels so great to know that someone needs me and so I look forward to working with the students each week.”

FBISD Volunteers answer the call to impact literacy in our communityThe call for volunteers was heard throughout our community as more than 500 FBISD volunteers – representing local business, community and civic groups – came together to support the world-wide literacy initiative, Read Across the Globe. An initiative of Points of Light with support from The Barbara Bush Hous-ton Literacy Foundation and Volunteer Houston, the event brought the power of volunteers together to impact literacy in our community.
FBISD volunteers filled nearly 350 classrooms to read to more than 7,000 FBISD students in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most children read to in a 24-hour period in every time zone across the globe. Although we didn’t break the world record, the event helped spread awareness of the critical issue of illiteracy.
Among the various volunteer groups represented were: retired teachers, FBISD PTAs/PTOs, FBISD Board of Trustees and employees, the Fort Bend Education Foundation, Willowridge PALs, Sweet Boutique Bakery, Center Point Energy, City of Missouri City, Houston Police Department, area television stations, Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office, Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, Literacy Council of Fort Bend, Fiesta Mart Supermarket-Missouri City, Fluor Daniels, CBS Hot Hits Radio, Macy’s, Beth El Ministries, Johnson Development Corp., the University of Houston – Sugar Land Campus, and The Pinnacle.

“This was a very involved project and it took many ‘hands on deck’ to make it such a success,” said Beth Egmon, Elementary School Helping Teacher. “Shining the light on literacy was the primary goal, and FBISD feels privileged to have worked with such a wide range of volunteer groups from the FBISD community. It warmed my heart to see so many volunteers gather together to promote literacy in our schools.”

Career Day presenters offer students “Strategies for Success” in preparing for life beyond high school
Preparing students for futures beyond what they can imagine is a high priority in Fort Bend ISD, and middle school is an appropriate time to ask students to think about their career ambitions and short-term goals for high school.
With the support of various business and community partners, FBISD provides middle school eighth-grade students with a glimpse into their futures by present-ing annual Career Day events. Career Day gives students an opportunity to receive information about various career choices. During Career Day, students meet with area professionals representing various industries to learn about their education paths, training and job experiences. Students also enjoy motivational speakers and attend a Career Educational Fair that includes business representatives and FBISD Technical Education Center students who educate the eighth-graders on careers and life beyond high school.
Fort Bend ISD thanks the many business and community members, parents and District staff and students who contributed to this year’s Career Day.

Junior Achievement volunteers are making a difference!
Thanks to Junior Achievement (JA), Fort Bend ISD students have the opportunity to develop work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills to help them gain confidence in reaching their potential.
Several high schools participate in Junior Achievement’s What a Difference a Day Makes program each year. With training provided by JA staff, the high school students visit youngsters at their feeder pattern elementary schools to facilitate hands-on activities about a community and the roles and re-sponsibilities of its citizens.
This year, Junior Achievement volunteers representing 38 businesses, community and student organizations impacted more than 20,000 students on 42 Fort Bend ISD campuses. JA also awarded 32 scholarships valued at $46,000 to FBISD high school students.
Junior Achievement volunteers were well represented at various FBISD schools this year preparing students for the workplace and for life.
“Imagine elementary school students taking part in activities where they learn to save money in their piggy banks because a high school senior taught them the value of budgeting, planning and saving money now to buy assets later. The Dulles High School Men of Excellence Ambassadors, a student leadership group, are committed to serving their community with pride and distinction. Group members are becoming well known around campus and throughout the community as they volunteer their services to help others in need. This school year, group members helped staff at Dulles Elementary School with the morning car rider line. They greeted families with a smile, opening car doors for students and welcoming them to school. To show their apprecia-tion to their school’s custodial staff, the Men of Excellence supported the team by assisting with clean up during the evening shift. The students remained after school to dust furniture, remove gum from desks, and clean floors, sidewalks and windows.
Students in Quail Valley Middle School’s Fine Arts Program helped spread holiday cheer among community members and District elementary students as they took part in a holiday tour. The school’s Honors Band, Orchestra, Choir and Fine Arts students visited Chelsea Gardens Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and two Fort Bend ISD elementary schools (Quail Valley and Lantern Lane) to present musical performances, as well as a live art show. The holiday tour gave the middle school students an opportunity to give back to their feeder pattern schools and to community members who have supported them over the years.

As a show of support to members of the Fort Bend community, the Kempner High School “Cougars” Basketball Team spent time during their Thanksgiv-ing Holiday helping the East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry feed families during its annual Thanksgiving food drive. Being thankful for all they have and to individuals who support them, the Cougars were eager to extend their appreciation to their community. The Kempner team, including coaches, helped provide Thanksgiving meals to more than 300 families this year.

Giving back to others: an essential key to successFBISD students understand the importance of giving back to society
In Fort Bend ISD, our students realize that success is measured by more than their academic or athletic ability. Success is also measured by students’ willingness to give freely of their time, talents and resources to support members of our community. Our students are extremely generous when it comes to support-ing a worthy cause and helping those in need. Following are just a few examples of how FBISD students, from elementary to high school, give back to society.
Baines Middle School observed Breast Cancer Awareness Month with its annual Lynn Armstrong Breakfast, held in memory of former Blue Ridge Elementary School principal Dr. Lynn Armstrong. The girls’ volleyball team welcomed guests and provided them with helpful resources. The school also hosted onsite mammograms by Mammosafe and a Breast Cancer Walk and Pink Out Day.

Students at Scanlan Oaks Elementary School put their Halloween candy to good use this year by taking part in a service project to benefit U.S. military organizations across the globe. The Monday after Halloween, the Scanlan Oaks students dropped bags of candy into donation barrels in the school’s front lobby. The students donated more than 500 pounds of candy to benefit military personnel at the Navy Operation Support Center in Houston, the Naval Air Sta-tion in Jacksonville, Florida and several overseas military bases. The students also wrote “thank you” letters and drew pictures to include in the packages. The project served as a fun way for students to show their appreciation to the men and women serving in the U.S. military.

Ridge Point High School student, Sophia George, positioned herself in vari-ous leadership roles that would allow her to make a difference in people’s lives. She volunteered with the Houston Food Bank and Second Mile Mission Center, and that service led to her becoming involved with Souper Bowl of Caring. Excited to have the opportunity to contribute to the cause, Sophia organized a Tackle Hunger football camp for children during the Thanksgiving holidays to help them understand how hunger affects our community, while offering them a fun day of activities. All participants were asked to donate a nonperishable food item or make a $5 donation to enter the camp. Sophia also invited all high school YES groups to participate in Souper Bowl of Caring by hosting events on their individual campuses.
Hannah Gay and Haleigh Rider of Girl Scout Troop 29033 spent each Tuesday during the Kids & Cops Summer Camp teaching students about the effects of bullying through a skit they wrote and performed. The girls decided to present the skit as part of their Girl Scout Sil-ver Award project. Along with the skit, Hannah and Haleigh also shared bully-ing terminology. While most students enjoyed the relaxing days of summer, two Fort Bend ISD eighth-grade students were spreading an anti-bullying mes-sage to students attending the Kids and Cops summer program at Bowie Middle School.

Settlers Way Elementary School has a longstanding commitment to supporting cancer research efforts, and this year was no different. Collectively, students and staff raised more than $4,550 to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through its “Pennies for Patients” program.

Elkins High School “Knights” Varsity Football team players and coaches helped make the holidays bright for nearly 30 Lantern Lane Elementary School students who benefitted from the team’s annual toy drive. Each year, the Elkins football players host an annual toy drive on campus to collect toys for young girls and boys at Lantern Lane Elementary School, one of their feeder pattern schools. Elkins works with the elementary school counselor to identify ideal candidates who would most benefit from the donations. The team then visits the campus, with toys in hand, to surprise the recipients. This year, the team donated more than 400 games and toys for the students to enjoy for themselves and share with other children in their family.
When community children are in need of support, Lexington Creek Elementary School students are quick to lend a hand. The elementary students participated in the B.I.G. Love Fun Run/Walk, sponsored by B.I.G. Love Cancer Care Services, and collected nearly $5,000 in donations to support cancer kids and their families at Tex-as Children’s Hospital. This is the first year of Lexington Creek Elementary School’s involvement in the Fun Run/Walk. The LCE students took part in the Fun Run/Walk during their outclass time. They came prepared with water bottles, healthy snacks and applications of sunscreen and bug spray. To keep students motivated along the way, teachers played party music and lined the school track with inspirational poster boards that read: “You got this!” “Way to go!” “Super Job!” and “You are Awesome!”

The Shared Dreams Program “Where Children Remain our Focus”
Fort Bend ISD’s Shared Dreams program provides emergency short-term assistance to District students by providing adequate clothing, shoes, school supplies and toiletries. The program relies heavily on monetary and in-kind donations from generous campuses, as well as business, community and faith-based partners.
This year, the Shared Dreams Program assisted more than 200 students at the facility. It also provided underwear, clothing essentials, and school supplies to campus clinics that have the potential of helping approximately 6,000 students.
In December, the Shared Dreams program Holiday Cheer, made the holidays more meaningful for 49 FBISD families, including 147 children, thanks to the overwhelming generosity of 53 program sponsors who provided gifts for the children.
Among the business and community partners to support Shared Dreams this year include:
• Optum Pharmacy – supported FBISD students by donating 20 backpacks filled with school supplies (10 each for kindergarten and first grade) to Ridgemont Elementary School. • Massage Heights – sponsored a school supply drive, coordinated by Retreat Director Sarah Thomas, at their Sugar Land, Cinco Ranch and San Felipe locations to support students at Mission Bend Elementary School. • Texas Dow Employees Credit Union (TDECU) – hosted a school supply drive to collect donations of school supplies, clothing and toiletries for FBISD students. TDECU Member Care Specialist Ashley Angeles spearheaded the event after realizing the District’s needs. • Aetna – In keeping with their tradition of generous support to Shared Dreams, Aetna employees hosted their annual school supply drive that gave employees the option of donating items or ordering online for shipment directly to Shared Dreams. The online set-up gave employees who work from home the opportunity to participate in the program.

The team then visits the campus, with toys in hand, to surprise the recipients. This year, the team donated more than 400 games and toys for the students to enjoy for themselves and share with other children in their family.
When community children are in need of support, Lexington Creek Elementary School students are quick to lend a hand. The elementary students participated in the B.I.G. Love Fun Run/Walk, sponsored by B.I.G. Love Cancer Care Services, and collected nearly $5,000 in donations to support cancer kids and their families at Tex-as Children’s Hospital. This is the first year of Lexington Creek Elementary School’s involvement in the Fun Run/Walk. The LCE students took part in the Fun Run/Walk during their outclass time. They came prepared with water bottles, healthy snacks and applications of sunscreen and bug spray. To keep students motivated along the way, teachers played party music and lined the school track with inspirational poster boards that read: “You got this!” “Way to go!” “Super Job!” and “You are Awesome!”

The Shared Dreams Program “Where Children Remain our Focus”
Fort Bend ISD’s Shared Dreams program provides emergency short-term assistance to District students by providing adequate clothing, shoes, school supplies and toiletries. The program relies heavily on monetary and in-kind donations from generous campuses, as well as business, community and faith-based partners.
This year, the Shared Dreams Program assisted more than 200 students at the facility. It also provided underwear, clothing essentials, and school supplies to campus clinics that have the potential of helping approximately 6,000 students.
In December, the Shared Dreams program Holiday Cheer, made the holidays more meaningful for 49 FBISD families, including 147 children, thanks to the overwhelming generosity of 53 program sponsors who provided gifts for the children.
Among the business and community partners to support Shared Dreams this year include:
• Optum Pharmacy – supported FBISD students by donating 20 backpacks filled with school supplies (10 each for kindergarten and first grade) to Ridgemont Elementary School. • Massage Heights – sponsored a school supply drive, coordinated by Retreat Director Sarah Thomas, at their Sugar Land, Cinco Ranch and San Felipe locations to support students at Mission Bend Elementary School. • Texas Dow Employees Credit Union (TDECU) – hosted a school supply drive to collect donations of school supplies, clothing and toiletries for FBISD students. TDECU Member Care Specialist Ashley Angeles spearheaded the event after realizing the District’s needs. • Aetna – In keeping with their tradition of generous support to Shared Dreams, Aetna employees hosted their annual school supply drive that gave employees the option of donating items or ordering online for shipment directly to Shared Dreams. The online set-up gave employees who work from home the opportunity to participate in the program.

This garden serves as a year-long science lab for growth and develop-ment of plants, the role of genetics in selective breeding, the role and use of watersheds, the process of ecological succession, an introduction to horticulture, and encourages student interest in fresh vegetables, providing life-long good eating habits. The produce will be given to involved students and low-income students on campus.
Consider the impact this Founda-tion grant has on fine arts programs. Equipped with the newest digital tuning technology, these orchestra students can be in sync in no time, which gives them extra minutes to perfect this beautiful music.
Elementary and middle school students across Fort Bend ISD enjoy hands-on learning opportunities through programming and robotic clubs, in an effort to stimulate interest and encourage career paths in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.

Endorsed by FBISD leaders, including Superintendent Charles Dupre, the Foundation offers the following opportunities for support: Grants to Teachers Program - supports innovative classroom projects proposed by teachers for which conventional funding is not available. Awards range from $500 - $1500.
School Site Program - offers a maximum of (3) grants per campus ranging from $2,000 (elementary) to $3,000 (secondary) for campus-wide educational improvement opportunities.
New Teacher Grants -The Foundation also automatically provides a grant of $100 to every new teacher beginning their teaching career!
Professional Development Grants -The Fort Bend Education Foundation liaisons with FBISD’s Talent Management/Development department to fund nationally recognized speakers in a broad range of educational fields on staff development days.
Where does the money go? Funds raised from generous local businesses and individuals are channeled with expert precision directly into classrooms, where talented students are teamed with inspired educators, to achieve levels greater than anything they thought possible.

Over 500 FBISD staff, volunteers and community members enjoyed a casual evening of fun and frolic, including dinner, dancing and a cake auction at the 1st Annual Sugar Shindig, which took place at Safari Texas. It was camaraderie at its finest as guests vied for the best cakes made by local bakers.
