    View from the Vicarage Rev’d Allison Davies

    It seems a long time since I last wrote an article for the various village magazines around Bredon Hill, as our publications got temporarily suspended due to the Lockdown; However, many of you will know that during this time I have been producing a weekly Bulletin, to support worship and personal prayer whilst our church buildings have been closed. If you have not seen it and would like to receive an electronic copy then please email me at [email protected] In writing this article, I was asked to try and avoid talking about the Coronavirus, and so will therefore mention what is happening in the churches calendar at this time of year. For the end May sees us focusing on the festival Pentecost, a commercially less well-known festival than Christmas and Easter, but nevertheless important! As it is now we remember that after Jesus rose from the dead and ascended in heaven, He did not leave the disciples on their own and left to their own devices; Instead, He sent the Holy Spirit, to dwell within them and to equip them with those gifts which the church now calls Gifts of the Spirit – Wisdom, Understanding, Right Judgement, Courage, Knowledge, Piety and Reverence.

    Through these gifts the disciples were transformed from being quiet, fearful, anxious and nervous people, to ones who because of their awareness of the presence of God within them, together with their belief in an eternal life with God, were willing to accept hardships marginalisation, persecution to the point of death, and were still empowered to be His witnesses, making new disciples wherever they went.

    That same Holy Spirit still equips us today, enabling us to cope and give us courage, when we, like the disciples, are daunted by the prospect of doing something we feel is beyond us, or when something happens which shakes us to the core of our being and we don’t know which way to turn. At such times, all we need to do is to let go and let the Spirit in, so that the Spirit can work within us.

    But Pentecost quickly moves into the long season of Trinity, when we remember that God exists as a 3 way relationship – as God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit; And for those of us who were baptised and confirmed, we may remember questions being asked of us, or on our behalf, of “Do you believe and trust in God the Father, source of being and life, the one for whom we exist?”; “Do you believe and trust in God the Son, who took our human nature, died for us and rose again?”; “Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit, who gives life to the people of God and makes Christ known in the world?” These questions illustrate how the relationship of the Trinity can be expressed as a divine dance as they interact with one another, expressing love for each other, and complementing the work each has to do. We are called to live in this same loving relationship. Therefore this June, whatever it brings for us, and in whatever challenges we face, may we as people made in God’s image, live in this community of the love of a Trinitarian God, and live out this community of love in our homes, our villages and across our wider world. May God bless you and keep you safe and well.

    Walking at Croft Farm

    Please be mindful of Private Property: Clive Porter After the longest, wettest winter during the 50 years we have been in this farm, it has at last, quickly dried and now we are having to irrigate! Thanks to all who respected the signs and kept off during the mud season. Unfortunately, a few seem to regard the whole farm as open access. Actually, it is private property, but we allow visitors to enjoy the permissive paths as displayed. Please remember to read signs and in particular keep dogs under control and keep well clear of the Airstrip.

    Please Clean up after your Dogs

    There has been an increase in the number of reports regarding dog fouling over the past few months, especially in and around the villages. Please clean up after your dogs, it is an offence not to do so and carries a fine of up to £1000.

    People of Pershore Rise to the Challenge

    Eric Wiles - Chairman, Pershore and District Volunteer Centre Before the lock down Pershore Volunteer Centre and the Town Council delivered a note to every house in Pershore, seeking volunteers to help our community during the crisis. We also reached out to those in the surrounding villages. The response was overwhelming. More than 85 new volunteers from Pershore and 50 from the villages have come forward. With these new volunteers as well as our existing 90, we have a small army- ready, willing and able. At this time of year our team of Social Car Scheme drivers would be ferrying around 125 people per week to their appointments at hospital, medical centres; dentists, opticians and the like. Many of these have been cancelled- but not all. Some need urgent treatment in hospital outpatient centres; we continue to provide this vital service, using dedicated volunteer drivers. Changes in Practices have meant that many people are being treated at home, self-administering life-saving medication. Our team of drivers now collect these vital medicines, from as far away as Dudley Hospital, enabling house-bound patients to access crucial treatments. Our minibus used to provide help for people without their own transport, taking them on their weekly shopping trip. Social distancing, with as many of our regulars in self-isolation, have made this impractical. We replaced this service with a team of volunteers who undertake personalised shopping trips and prescription deliveries– nearly 400 so far and counting. Many of these volunteers are new to Pershore Volunteer Centre and we welcome them and thank them for their generosity of spirit. Our fortnightly Lunch Club in St Andrew’s Centre has had to be suspended. Working with Here4U, we ensure that our elderly clients are contacted regularly. This can be a telephone call or simply a friendly wave through the window. Self-isolation should not mean “isolated”; our community is there to ensure that no one in our area feels alone. There are, of course, many organisations working in Pershore and the surrounding area to support our community - the team at the Town Hall, Pershore Town Functions, Here4U, the Churches, the Rotary Club and the Foodbank to mention but a few. These formal organisations are supplemented by a host of community groups and individuals who are help their local communities. Let us all remember, and be thankful, for those working in the NHS, care homes, the emergency services and other key workers without whom we could not survive.

    If you can help or if you need help and have not contacted us here at the Volunteer Centre, please ring us on 01386 554299 and speak to either Donna or Sue. If you would like to support us financially- so important in the current crisis- please go to Charities Aid Foundation at www.cafonline.org. and search for Pershore and District Volunteer Centre. I think we should feel proud of what we are all doing in Pershore and the surrounding area.

    Defford & Besford’s Village People

    Margaret Mallet: Bags & Bands Co-ordinator

    This is the story of how a small project took off and became a large project, a story about people making new friends and of how a community pulled together to help others. Back in March a post appeared on a Pershore Facebook page asking for volunteers to make laundry wash bags and buttoned headbands for NHS and Frontline Staff. The wash bags provide the staff with a means of getting their contaminated uniforms home and into their washing machines without contaminating anything outside the working environment. The buttoned head bands would prevent the face mask elastics causing pressure sores to the wearers’ ears. That’s a good idea, thinks I, I’ll make 10 laundry wash bags and 10 buttoned headbands. It will give me something useful to do during lockdown.

    I contacted Nicola Szabranski. who lives in our village, is one of our NHS heroines, working in Worcester Royal in the Radiology Department, to find out how we could get the bags and bands to the frontline. Our online conversation went along these lines:

    Margaret: “Would your department like some bags and bands?”

    Nicola: “oooohhh, yes please, that would be lovely!”

    Margaret: “how many would you like?”

    Nicola: “Would it be too greedy to ask for at least 12?”

    Margaret: “OK, so how many do you really need?”

    Nicola: “100”

    Margaret: [Gulp] “OK … no problem!”

  • 5

    Then I also received a request for 100 of each for Oncology and 30 of each for critical Care Unit …. I would need help … and thus started 6 weeks work, which saw people from Defford and Besford pull together in a remarkable fashion to meet the needs. The “project” was made up of several teams:

    • The sewing team; they took unwanted pillow cases & duvet covers and turned them into laundry

    washbags with drawstrings and headbands. Some of the team were “self isolating”, we took the raw

    materials to them and collected the completed items;

    • The “buttoneer” team who collected bands and buttons from my house and returned them having

    sewed 2 buttons onto every headband;

    • The donators, who generously gave toiletries (hand cream, moisturisers, shower gel, bath oil etc) and

    treats to cheer the workers (tea & coffee with chocolate and biscuits). People purchased and donated

    headbands and buttons. Financial donations from people who couldn’t shop or sew;

    • The “tidy cupboard group”, who tidied their airing cupboards and gave unwanted pillow cases and

    duvets and then went on to tidy other cupboards so they could donate hundreds of buttons;

    • The “thank you card” group who produced beautifully hand crafted cards for the frontline staff.

    Children from our village school were important members of this group;

    • The transport manager and team who delivered the goods across south Worcestershire;

    • The orders secretary who contacted all care homes, care providers, doctors and hospitals in Pershore,

    Upton Upon Severn, Evesham, Broadway and surrounding areas to ascertain their needs;

    • The “head cook and bottle washer” who co-ordinated this wonderful group of people.

    As the days went by we received more requests for bags and bands. So, we just kept making them! Request were mainly from local people, but we did send bags and bands to Devon, Yorkshire and South Wales. We made contact with another group, Worcester Heroes Banded 2gether, and worked with them and other groups to ensure all frontline staff in Worcestershire have the bags and bands they need. Needing a name for our group, we became “Defford and Besford Village People” (this will conjure up memories for people of a certain age). We, Defford and Besford Village People, covered WR8, WR10, WR11 and WR12. The WHB2 groups covered the remaining WR postcodes. It was good to work together, helping each other whenever we could. As we go to press we are very proud to say our group alone, Defford and Besford Village People, have collected, produced and delivered 991 buttoned head bands, 783 laundry wash bags with drawstrings and countless boxes of toiletries and goodies. It has been a privilege and joy to work on this project. It has helped bring Defford and Besford together at a very difficult time, giving some of us a purpose. In helping other people we have helped ourselves feel a sense of purpose and belonging. So many people have willingly given of their time, skills and resources. People have met new people, people who they haven’t met in spite of living in the village for many years, new friendships have been forged. Above anything we are proud to have been able to help frontline staff in this very small way. This group is only part of the community spirit which has been shown since lock down. We are lucky to live in such a beautiful area and to be part of a true village community. May our willingness to recognise people’s needs, respond with kindness and help continue not only during this pandemic but in perpetuity.

    Defford & Besford’s Support Group

    Sally Hunt: Group Co-ordinator

    Early in March I asked if anyone from Defford and Besford would be willing to volunteer and provide support for anyone who may be impacted by Covid-19, I was overwhelmed by the response and very quickly had 28 people willing to provide support. The villages were divided up between the group and they have been providing support throughout the lockdown and getting involved in projects such as the one Margaret co-ordinated so brilliantly above. They have shopped, dog walked, collected prescriptions, and above all they have been there to do what they can to support both villages. There has been a fantastic amount of "pulling together" and thinking about others. Several of the group have needed support themselves due to having to self-isolate and it is wonderful to live in a village where people are willing to help if the need arises.

    So a huge thank you to: Caroline Evans, Debby Fox, Lorraine Hunt, Tara Forland-Wyatt, Paul Wyatt, Jane Thompson, Richard Swann, Tina Davies, Diane Small, Sue Rees, Emma Holmes, Ben Holmes, Terry Andrews, Jemma Jones, Margaret Mallett, Debbie Johnson, Laura Wootton, Lesley James, Sue Knight, Andrew Smith, Stephanie Fogwill. To quote Margaret Mallett “We are fortunate to live in this area, where we can get out without meeting crowds, where we have gardens, where we have local shops, farm shops etc who can cater for our every need. The milkman has been delivering 3 days a week without fail, the postman delivers daily and the refuse is collected weekly.” If you or someone you know needs help and support during the lockdown, please email [email protected]

    The Challenges of the Ministry During Lockdown

    Rev’d Allison Davies

    A lot has been happening in the last two months, so I wanted to give you an update on events around Bredon Hill and in the wider Worcester Diocese. It has been a challenge to reinvent “how to do” Ministry during this time and ensuring that people remain informed and connected. One of my first tasks has been to produce the weekly Bredon Hill Bulletin, and I hope that you find its mix of ministry, reflection, news and puzzles informative, helpful and interesting. I am glad to say that more and more people are requesting the Bulletin, so it is pleasing to see that its

    mailto:[email protected]

  • 7

    readership is growing each week. Please do share the Bulletin with your friends and neighbours, or let me know if there is someone who would like to be added to the distribution list. Unfortunately, not all members of our congregations are able to receive an electronic copy and we are looking at ways of ensuring that everyone who would like it has access to a copy. As you might expect at a time when we cannot gather together to attend services at our churches, more of us have been taking part in online streamed worship. Many members of the clergy, myself included, have gained new skills in video making, editing and uploading content to social media channels. While these online methods cannot hope to match the experience of us worshipping together; I hope that you are finding the weekly services that I am uploading to YouTube of some comfort and support during this challenging time. A time that, for most of us, will be unlike anything we have lived through before. I am beginning to get a bit more creative with producing online content. However, if anyone would like to get involved in the production of the social media content, please do let me know. As well as online services, I am now leading a weekly Compline Service via Zoom with the congregation of St Mary’s at Elmley Castle. This is a lovely opportunity for me to be with parishioners, even if it is only virtually. So if other congregations would like to do the same, again please let me know. Opening Up Our Churches Again It is hoped that there will be good news about our churches being able to open up again in the near future. The Church Times has mooted that churches could be open for private prayer from early June, which could be followed up by the opportunity for weddings and funerals to be held in church later on in June. There is also a possibility that we could recommence public worship at our churches at some point in July. However, while it would be wonderful news if we were able to follow this timetable for worship in our churches, it will be dependent to undertaking full risk assessments; and any decision would need to be made in light of the local context and national guidance from the government, the Church of England and the Diocese of Worcester. I have asked each PCC to produce their own plan of what is achievable and to also identify what may pose a greater challenge for them, in order to begin re-opening our churches for worship. The likely expectation is that not all of our churches will be able to re-open straight away and that some churches will take longer. However, we are looking forward to the time when we can all come back into our buildings for public worship, and if you have any suggestions as to how we may celebrate this occasion, then please let your churchwardens know. Occupancy of Bredon Rectory As many of you may know, one of the consequences of the lockdown has been an inability for the Diocese to acquire a new home for Bishop Martin and his family to move to from their current home in Oxford. So, it has been decided to house Bishop Martin and his family in the Bredon Rectory for hopefully not more than twelve months. My sincere thanks go to the members of the Bredon congregation who are getting the Rectory ready for Bishop Martin and his family to move in. It is expected that this is likely to take place either on the 1st or 2nd of June. Bishop Martin is looking forward very much becoming part of the community at Bredon. However, we must all be reminded that he has a day job too! The Challenges of Finance and Parish Share Sadly, a less fortunate consequence of the current lockdown has been the detrimental effect it has had on the finances of the Diocese. As we learnt from the Big Conversation funding was already looking stretched

  • 8

    before lockdown, so the current situation has added to those pressures. The Diocese has been very clear that each church needs to look after its own expenses first before it pays its Parish Share. Of course, it is the Parish Share which pays for the Stipends. This further reduction in income means that, what was already a very unfortunate situation with the expected loss of 15 clergy posts, now looks to be further exacerbated with the loss of posts increasing to 30 members of the clergy. Archdeacon Nikki will be chairing a newly established Restructuring Group to collate evidence and make recommendations for the future restructuring of the Diocese. What does that mean for the Bredon Hill Group? So what does that mean for the Bredon Hill Group? Well, unfortunately, the recruitment of an incumbent as Rector for Bredon & Beckford has had to be put on hold for the time being, although the Group has been promised a minimum of two incumbents. However, where the new incumbent will be initially based is still to be discussed, but it is possible than rather than their being a new rector solely for the benefices of Bredon and Beckford or Elmley Castle this might mean a second incumbent covering the whole group of churches, much as Rev. David Lewis, Rick Tett and now myself have been doing for the last 18 months or so. Where that member of clergy will be housed is also yet to be decided. However, the good news is that given bishop Martin is moving into the rectory in Bredon, the house will not be sold. This potentially gives us more of a future opportunity, should at some point in time, an additional clergy position to the second Incumbent, such as a house-for-duty post, be possible. Any selection process will need to dovetail with the work of the Restructuring Group, and cannot commence at the earliest until the Lockdown has been lifted, As already mentioned, it is anticipated that Bishop Martin and his family will be occupying the Rectory at Bredon for a year, it has been suggested that the new appointee might move into the Rectory at Elmley when the current tenants’ lease runs out. Public Worship in the Future Conversations with your PCC on what public worship may look like in future have already started. As at least for the summer months there will only be one incumbent; changes to service patterns and timings are going to be necessary. However, I am confident that I will be ably supported in providing ministry by those retired members of the clergy who live around the Hill and who have kindly agreed to assist. As a way of sharing core messages around the Hill a new Forum has been established. It will have no decision making powers as this will still be remain with your church PCC, but the Forum will provide an opportunity to share issues, concerns and news particularly at this time of Lockdown, and the first meeting took place last Wednesday. Therefore, given the circumstances we find ourselves in, we do now need to think creatively and with an open mind about the future. As such your thoughts and opinions are really important in helping us develop this thinking and in helping to shape the future of ministry and mission around Bredon Hill going forwards. So, if you have any ideas which could contribute to our discussions, then please do share them with your churchwardens and/or a member of The Forum. At this time of Pentecost, as we remember that the Holy Spirit came down and empowered the disciples to go and spread the Good News of Christ, let us all today, as His body of believers, be renewed in our calling to build up His church in this place of Bredon Hill, and let us pray that even in these challenging times, our churches may be strengthened such that they may become the focus of love, hope and Christian witness in our communities. May God continue to bless and protect you in the days ahead.

    News from Groups and Clubs

    Defford Pathfinders

    Sue Slater Sadly all our plans for local walks through the summer are on hold until we are rid of this dreadful Coronovirus. As soon as we are released from social distancing we hope to resume walking as soon as possible. At least living in and around Defford we can see the countryside from our own front doors and enjoy our permitted exercise whilst carefully avoiding close contact with our friends and neighbours. And the sun is shining! We are so fortunate! Stay well, stay safe and hopefully we will be out walking again soon.
