MILITARY uNITSoketzOketz is a specialized IDF unit in which soldiers work with highly trained K-9 partners in the field for counter-terrorism missions, as well as Search and Rescue. The units are qualified to work with dogs trained to provide solutions to specific needs, offering a significant advantage during combat operations. Oketz is considered to be one of the best K-9 units in the world and many military units from abroad come to learn from and collaborate with Oketz. Although the dogs are, for all intents and purposes, military tools just like firearms or protective measures, they are a unique type of weapon – they are living creatures that receive personal attention, exceptional training and intensive coaching tailored to the tasks they will face in the field. The methods used to train the soldiers and their K-9 counterparts are complex and fascinating–some even top secret. Beyond the K-9′s contribution to the success of the mission, these animals’ first purpose is to keep all of the soldiers in the squad safe and secure. Oketz soldiers and their dogs walk first, in front of the squad, leading IDF forces, along with the commanders of the operation, into the field. Currently, K-9 soldiers are an integral part of almost every operation — locating terrorists, detecting explosives, assisting in capturing terrorists, searching structures before troops enter, and more. Why Israel? THe BuSINeSS CASe:

“Israel is recognised as being at the forefront of high-tech innovation, backed by a highly educated and creative workforce and a sound infrastructure. Some of the world’s largest multinational corporations developed their key breakthroughs in Israel and the ongoing influx of new companies serves as a sign of the vibrancy of Israel’s industrial research and development.”

BINYAMIN BeN eLIeZeR former Minister of Industry

START-uP NATIoNIsrael has affectionately been dubbed the “Start-Up Nation”, a title inspired by the book by Dan Senor and Saul Singer which is recommended to be read by all delegates. The book explores Israel’s adversity-driven culture, which flattens hierarchy and elevates informality, all backed up by government policies focused on innovation. Israel deals with the problems and challenges that have had to be overcome for it to remain the only vibrant democracy in the Middle East, with an outstanding international trade record and a major contribution to the academic, hi-tech, agribusiness, security and medical worlds.

“When it comes to sustainable development, the future in Israel looks very bright. Israel may be the world champion at doing more with less. But in the future, we intend to do a lot more with a lot less.”

BeNJAMIN NeTANYAHu PRIME MINISTER OF ISRAEL

THe AuSTRALIAN oPPoRTuNITYWith a burgeoning economy, and the highest number of start-up companies in the world, Israel has caught the attention of Australian companies seeking to develop a competitive advantage through future product and service development. Israeli scientific advancement has revolutionised global product development through innovation and invention. AICC delegations to Israel enable participants to gain an insight into how Israel has developed a $300 billion economy amidst an existential quest for survival and the domestic challenges of social integration. In many ways Israel is a ‘pressure cooker’. Business and political leaders in Australia can benefit from seeing how Israel manages the problems we in Australia have or likely to have in the future. They can see how economic development, stimulated by a venture capital market that incubates and propels business on a global scale, has allowed new technology to flourish and has resulted in the iconic technology companies of the world establishing research and development operations in Israel.

Israel is a small and intense country whose major resource is its people and their ability to think through and innovate solutions to problems. The AICC delegations enable participants to learn and benefit from observing both Israel’s successes and its failures. The delegations aspire to stimulate and ferment new thinking, new ideas, and new business relationships between Australia and Israel. Bilateral trade contracts resulting from these delegations have led to the development of enhanced competitiveness, product diversification, and the identification of new strategic niche opportunities for many Australian businesses.

“Notwithstanding personal views on the messy and polarising politics of the Middle East, the State of Israel is an important study in democratic nation-building in a unforgiving natural environment. Israel is creating a viable economy utilising its only significant primary endowment – the resourcefulness of its people. Israel’s achievements in a wide range of endeavours, including agriculture, science and technology and social development, need to be seen first-hand to be understood – and lessons drawn. I am grateful to the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce for arranging for me to explore my intellectual and professional interests in Israel. The Chamber proved an excellent vehicle for introducing groups of Australians with like-minded interests to developments in Israel.”DAVID IRVINe Ao FORMER DIRECTOR GENERAL ASIO - AUSTRALIAN SECURITY INTELLIGENCE ORGANISATION

“The team at AICC are first class. Having been on a number of delegations with different organisations over the journey, my experience is that this teams ability to organise really high quality meetings and experiences which provide genuine insight and learning and their skill in chasing down tailored opportunities really sets them apart.”

I want to thank you for a truly extraordinary experience. The May 2016 Israel Delegation was a unique and exceptional opportunity to meet with a diverse and inspiring group of people. The individual tailored meetings were spot on and the forums and cultural tours were excellent. The attention to detail created a very safe and comfortable environment and I particularly enjoyed Tel Aviv which strikes me as the New York of Israel, the 24/7 city!! And I’m still reflecting on the amazing opportunity to walk around Jerusalem and the amazing history - what a privilege.Overall I just loved the whole swagger of the place - and John, you do a really great job of organising everything, well done. The Israel crew were masterful and extremely well organised as well. Thanks for getting me on board!

breakthroughs.

“The AICC hosted trade delegation on cyber security was quite a simply spectacular example of influence, access and organisation. By virtue of the cyber security industry in Israel, this delegation effectively doubled-up as an expose of Israel’s start-up revolution, its venture capital engine room, and an insightful display of Israel’s innovation and high-functioning collaboration. I was particularly impressed by the AICC’s ability to translate my specific business requirements around cyber security, into meaningful engagements across academia, government and private enterprise. More specifically, the visit allowed me to survey a large number of particularly capable vendors in an incredible compressed timeframe, making for efficient use of this relatively short visit. Some of these vendors I knew, and others that I would have missed were identified by the Chamber through their network of informed contacts. Overall a thoroughly worthwhile delegation to be part of.”

“In 2008, in my role as Western Australia’s Chief Scientist, I was honoured to lead the inaugural Mission to Israel by the WA chapter of AICC. It was an amazing and mind expanding experience, enjoyed and appreciated by all the delegates. I know the visits, both as a group and those targeted for individuals’ interests, opened up opportunities across a wide range of industries and included the fields of health, agriculture, environment, transport, energy and education. I have seen both short and longer term benefits from the highly professional organisation and the carefully tailored introductions. The Mission is very special and I am delighted to commend it to you.”PRoFeSSoR LYN BeAZLeY, Ao FTSe CIe

“The delegation led by David Irvine combined leading academics, governmental representatives, industry participants with investors. Not only did we get a unique insight into the cybersecurity challenges facing all countries and companies, but we saw Israel’s focused determination to remain the leader in the field across academia, government and industry. As investors, we were introduced to opportunities varying from direct investment to Israel’s best venture capitalists. The AICC managed to mix this fascinating agenda with a stunning glimpse into historical and cultural sites and events with a geopolitical overlay-all in all a compelling experience”

JIM CRAIG ExECUTIVE CHAIRMAN - RIVER CAPITAL

“The AICC delegation to Israel was invaluable in providing a broad overview of the business ecosystem and what makes Israel such an innovative and entrepreneurial country to do business with. Their connection to key government, university, and commercial leaders demonstrates their ability to be a catalyst for Australian businesses looking to learn from Israeli success or leverage their innovations and learnings into our market. With it came a great measure of culture and insight into the history and culture of this great land.”MR MICHAeL TRoVATo MANAGING PARTNER - CYBER RISK ADVISORS
