A lmost one third of yet-to-be-discovered resources, about
390 billion barrels, are located deep offshore in environments ever more difficult to access. Meeting the associated challenges requires technical expertise. This is made even more demanding with ever tighter cost control, Total’s new and innovative technologies, such as “all electric”, can deliver both, technical excellence and lower cost.

The main objective of our subsea facilities is to undertake on the seabed all the necessary processing usually carried out at the surface, so as to deliver export-ready products directly for refining or use.

Our strategy focuses on addressing all the technological, environmental, safety and cost control challenges inherent in deep offshore operations.
We invest significantly in R&D to evolve new technologies that enable the economic development of reserves ever more difficult to access.
KEEPING THE FLUIDS FLOWING
W e use cutting edge solutions to assess risk and ensure fluid flow. This task is made all the
more complex when dealing not only with the pressures and temperatures encountered on the ocean floor, but also when long pipelines and tie-backs are used in our projects.
We are continually developing new technologies:◗ In partnership with ConocoPhillips and SINTEF1 , we have developed a new multiphase flow software model called LedaFlow®. This model makes it possible to simulate complex flows and therefore to determine the optimum size of our facilities.
◗ In Angola, Pazflor was the first offshore development to perform gas / liquid separation at depths of 800 m coupled with large scale liquid activation. It opened the way for economic production of heavy and viscous oils lying at greater depths.
◗ Another world first that we wish to replicate in deep offshore is the electric heating of transport lines, tested in the Islay Field in the British North Sea, to prevent the formation of hydrate plugs.

T o reach resources that are located in ever more complex environments, we have chosen
the path of “full subsea”. However, this concept can only be made possible and cost effective with the advent of all-electric technology, the only efficient technology able to meet the challenges of long tie-backs. In 2016, we successfully installed and started up the world’s first all-electric subsea well in the K5F gas field (Dutch North Sea). All components used have been validated to a water depth of 3,000 m.
◗ SPRINGS® (Subsea PRocess and INjection Gear for Seawater), subsea
technology, uses nano-filtration membranes to eliminate sulphates found in seawater. An innovative process that enables water to be treated directly on the seabed before injecting it into the wells. Following successful pilot testing in real operating conditions (offshore Congo FPU2 Alima at a depth of 500 m), the process was industrialized and launched in 2016.
◗ Subsea Chemical Storage, a unit based subsea chemical storage system, enabling storage close to wells and hence permitting cheaper longer tie-backs by avoiding costly long length umbilicals; a joint industry collaboration program is ongoing.
◗ AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicule) an innovative pipeline inspection application, with enhanced functionality, capable in particular of tracking long distance pipelines at 3,000 m water depth. Such technology will help enhance our deepwater asset integrity. The 1st industrial application will be ready in 2018.

L ocated between 1,400 and 1,900 meters water depth on block 32, 260 kilometers off the
coast of Luanda in Angola, Kaombo is the largest deep offshore development in Angola.Kaombo Norte, the first of two enormous Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) units, both converted from Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC) to keep project costs down, came on stream in July 2018 and will produce an estimated 115,000 barrels of oil per day. A second sister FPSO, Kaombo Sul, is due to start up in 2019. Overall production will reach an estimated 230,000 barrels

Total is the leading deep offshore producer in West Africa, where today we are operating more than 450 subsea wells. In Angola, a third of oil production is operated by the Total Group within a framework of dialogue and long term partnerships with all stakeholders, and in 2018 production
started from Kaombo, the groups largest deep water development to date. In the Republic of Congo we are demonstrating our continued conquest of deep waters and more difficult to produce oils
with Moho Nord. Total is now bringing this same expertise to the Brazilian deep offshore, where in 2018 we became the first IOC to operate a pre-salt producing field.

Together, they will develop the resources of six different fields (Gengibre, Gindungo, Caril, Canela, Mostarda and Louro) some over 3 kilometers beneath the sea bed, and over an area of 800 square kilometers in the central and southern part of the block. Kaombo represents over 100 million manhours worked across 20 countries, of which 15 million in Angola, an unprecedented level of local content.

In January 2018, Total became the first International Oil Company
to operate a pre-salt producing field in Brazil. This following a strategic alliance with Petrobras the previous year. The Lapa field (Total 35%) stands in 2,100 m of deep water in the Santos basin, and is producing via FPSO Cidade
de Caraguatatuba. During the coming months and years, Total will bring its deepwater expertise to the fore with the development of Lapa North East and South West field extensions with additional wells and sub-sea facilities. Total also partners Petrobras in the same deep water zone on the Lara and Libra fields.
L ocated 140 kilometers from shore and operated by Total (40%) CLOV is the
fourth deep water development of the prolific Block 17 of Angola. Its production plateau of 160,000 barrels per day was reached after only three months in 2014, contributing to a block production of 700,000 barrels per day, reaching 2 billion barrels produced by May 2015.CLOV is a mega project with four development areas spread out over 29 by 25 kilometers. Two oil types are produced

simultaneously, from separate reservoirs (Oligocene and Miocene) with differing temperatures, pressures and viscosities, all impacting flow characteristics. To compensate for this, subsea multiphase pumping was chosen to boost oil recovery as reservoir pressures decrease. In concept, CLOV is a large integrated subsea production system, and an all-electric FPSO with full gas export to a liquefaction plant onshore thus enabling “zero flaring” under normal operations.
LAPA (Brazil), A STRATEGIC DEEPWATER MILESTONE
MOHO NORD (Congo), SHOWCASING OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE
O perated by Total with a 53.5% interest, with first oil in March 2017, this project was the
first deep offshore development to involve two floating plants dealing with two different types of oil from two separate formations: an FPU (Floating Production Unit) connected to 17 subsea wells to operate the Miocene turbidites and a TLP (Tension Leg Platform), a first for the Group in West Africa, with 17 topside wellheads to produce the Albian carbonate reservoirs. The environmental impact of these facilities is reduced to the minimum through a zero gas-flaring policy and re-injection of produced water. IMPACTS (Improvement and Acts Together for Safety) brought together more than 200 members, associates and subcontractors within the same safety culture. It promoted a safe work environment with zero accidents and respect for the environment. The project team members led by example and its ambassadors committed themselves to promoting safety at every level of the company. This initiative is monitored and appraised so as to build an enduring methodology that can be applied to future E&P projects.
