8:30 a.m. Rise: inspiring and transforming for top performance

We can overcomplicate our lives and overlook the basic features of what makes us good. When we look hard enough, we realize that being consistently good at everything we do can lead to moments of greatness.

In this riveting presentation, John Herdman shares his performance-improvement philosophies, including leadership and motivation, going outside one’s comfort zone, reaching for the top, and, most importantly, craft-ing and leading a high-performance culture. Herdman’s talk will provide useable takeaways, goal setting strategies and is guaranteed to inspire and transform.

JOHN HERDMAN

Head coach, Canadian men’s national soccer team

As the former head coach of the Canadian women’s national soccer team, John Herdman took the strug-gling team to one that captured the hearts and minds of Canadians. Under his leadership, the team won two back-to-back bronze medals at the Olympic Games and a gold medal at the Pan Am Games. In 2018, Herdman made history when he became the head coach of the Canadian men’s national soccer team — the first person to ever have led both line-ups.

10:15 a.m. Crossing the generational divide

We work in a time of unprecedented generational change and challenge. There are now five generations in the workforce. Making matters more challenging is the tremendous amount of misinformation around gener-ational differences. What works for one generation can be a complete turn-off for others. This divide is a costly challenge — but it can be a breakthrough opportunity. It all depends on how you and your leaders respond now.

Alicia Rainwater will help you solve the multi-generational challenge by revealing new generational truths based on Center for Generational Kinetics’ latest research along with surprising data, hidden trends, and specific solutions that drive measurable results and improve performance in the workplace.

ALICIA RAINWATER

The Centre for Generational Kinetics, certified speaker on millennials and generations

Alicia Rainwater is a millennial with a reputation as a leader in her own generation. She has extensive experience working firsthand to bridge generations in a variety of organizations, from hospitals to global non-profits. She combines the Center for Generational Kinetics’ latest research with her unique experience working with clients and multiple generations to deliver a powerful and engaging presentation on how to solve generational challenges with employees and customers.

11:10 a.m Empty Planet: the shock of global population decline

There was once a time when thought-leaders were warning us about the perils of our rapidly increasing global population. Now the data is telling quite a dif-ferent story. A smaller global population will bring with it many benefits: fewer workers will command higher wages, the environment will improve, and the risk of famine will wane. Darell Bricker makes the provocative argument that the global population will soon begin to decline, dramatically reshaping the social, political and economic landscape.

DARRELL BRICKER

CEO, Ipsos Public AffairsDemographic trends speaker Darrell Bricker is an expert

on public opinion, offering audiences an invaluable peek into the future. As the CEO of the public opinion research firm Ipsos Public Affairs, he has his finger on the pulse of Canada. He co-authored Empty Planet: The Shock of Global Population Decline, a cautionary tale about looming worldwide demographic shifts and the impact they will have on our economy, social pro-grams and government. He demonstrates how organizations will be dramatically affected by changes to the consumer and labour markets.

1:30 p.m. Rebordering the world and reshaping markets

Whether it’s economics, geopolitics, or international security and terrorism, few people have a better under-standing of global issues than professor Janice Gross Stein. She will connect the dots regarding key events such as the future role of China, whether the trade disruption is a new trend or a blip in time and provide up-to-date perspectives on the relationship between China and the United States. Her presentation will also explore other potential opportunities outside of China in Asia to leave attendees with a better understanding of current global issues and a clear, compelling vision of the future.

International market access challenges are affecting segments of agriculture and businesses differently. There are practical implications for many sectors, and groups and businesses are adapting, reacting and planning for these current and future implications. 3:20 p.m. Canada’s economic future

The number one concern keeping Canadian CEOs up at night is the growing instability and volatility they’re seeing outside of Canada’s borders. With a rise in global protectionism, threats to the trading system and shifting geopolitical alignments, it is time Canada rethinks its place in the world.

As proposed in the recently released Recommendations and report of the task force on Canada’s economic future, Goldy Hyder will highlight the call for a more pragmatic and realistic approach to foreign policy that advances the country’s national interests. He will also outline the need for Canada to develop a national resource and cli-mate strategy that positions Canada’s resource sectors, including agriculture, as vital to the country’s prosperity and as key suppliers of products and technologies that the world needs.

GOLDY HYDER

President & CEO, Canada Business Council

Goldy Hyder is president and CEO of the Business Council of Canada, a non-partisan organization composed of the chief executives and entrepreneurs of 150 leading Canadian companies. Previously he was the president & CEO of Hill+Knowlton Strategies. He is a regular commentator in the Canadian media on business, politics and public policy.

10:55 a.m. Surviving the worst day of your life (and coming out stronger)

The catastrophic Alberta wildfires destroyed 2,400 buildings and homes and displaced the entire community of Fort McMurray in 2016.

Through it all, guiding 88,000 people to safety with no loss of life in the largest evacuation in Canadian history, was fire chief Darby Allen.

Allen’s steady, calm leadership embodied grit — the ambition, perseverance, and determination necessary to weather the biggest challenge of his career.

Allen will show you how to find clarity and strength during crisis, and equally important: how to readjust and support yourself once the crisis has passed. With good people around you, a deep level of trust from both sides, and a strong mission, you and your team will get through difficulties, while finding the best in it.

DARBY ALLEN

Fort McMurray’s fire chief (ret.)Darby Allen was the regional fire chief of Wood Buffalo, an

area encompassing the community of Fort McMurray. In spring 2016, he spearheaded the evacuation of the city’s entire population while the rest of the world watched. Prior to his role as regional fire chief, Allen worked as a firefighter for the New Hampshire Brigade and the Calgary Fire Department. Allen currently teaches a program in transformational and charis-matic leadership at Queen’s University’s Smith School of Business.
