. . . The ability to provide for the needs of the worlds current population without damaging the ability of future generations to provide for themselves . . .

The Commitment we have made to this effort is

one that can not be taken lightly. It is our duty

as inhabitants of this planet to ensure that life

on this plant is preserved for future generations.

Implementing Technology and sustainable

building technologies are the beginning of a

new way of thinking and a new way of educating

the students in our curriculum. Our commit-

ment will help educate the community and influ-

ence other districts to join this movement. Take

an interest, take this seriously. Our planet has a

wealth of renewable resources which we can

harvest without causing irreversible damage to

our environment. Join The Movement.

long lasting and require very little maintenance. By utilizing installing a PV parking lot system the technology will be visible and provide a learning opportunity for the students and commu-

nity on the advantages that this renewable energy brings to the table. Coupling PVs with the white roof is a very bold push in the direction of sustainability on this project. Being a leader in this movement through edu-cating students and community

based on the systems implemented on this project is a very ef-fective and strong starting point for this movement. LEED The LEED rating system for schools 2007 has been used to

evaluate the Wingate Elementary & Bald Eagle HS/MS project. Through this system of the 79 possible points this project takes aim at obtaining 20 without much effort, and an additional 43 through the cooperation of the design and engineering profes-sionals working on this project. Through pursuing these addi-tional 43 points the project can achieve LEED certification. The guidelines set forth in the LEED scorecard are intended to help transform the built environment towards sustainability by promot-ing a whole-building approach to

sustainability by placing focus on five vital areas which are directly concerned with human and environmental health: Sus-tainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

Technologies In Our School Geothermal pump systems exchange thermal

energy between a building and the ground. When the building needs heating, the system extracts heat energy from the ground, and pumps it into the building where it is boosted by the heat pump to a comfortably warm temperature. Conversely, when the building needs cooling, the heat from the building is collected by the heat pumps and sent into the ground.

Green Roofs reduce urban heat islands by pro-viding shade and through evapotranspiration, the release of water from plans to the air. These

roofs also serve as living environ-ments that provide habitats for birds and small animals, while at the same time insulating the building from extreme temperatures and protecting the underlying roof material by eliminating ultraviolet radiation ex-posure, and reduce wastewater by assimilating large amounts of rain water.

White Roofs provide a wide range of advantages when compared to conventional roofing systems by reducing building heat-gain creating energy savings on air conditioning costs, enhance the

life expectancy of both the roof membrane and the buildings cooling system, improve the thermal effi-ciency of the roofs insulation, reduce the buildings demand for electrical power up to ten percent which re-duces air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Solar Energy is a renewable resource which can be relied upon daily. This technology does not produce pollution, and begins paying for itself immediately upon installa-tion. Photovoltaic cells are

What is Bald Eagle Doing to Lead this Effort

Education Sustainability is becoming more main stream in this day and age and the need to educate children and the commu-nity about how they can be a part of this movement is para-mount. Bald Eagle has the opportunity to be a local leader,

example to its students and the community as well as surrounding districts with this project. By hosting an Open House which show-cases the projects sustainable technologies and explain how the systems improve the learning environment. Devel-oping a community outreach

program to educate the community on sustainability through seminars to explain what they can do to help out through small changes. The main impact can come through implementing changes in the curriculum over all ages. By connecting learning activities in all areas of the curriculum to sustainability from K through 12 through experiments and coursework which demonstrate the connections to the environmental impact of our way of life and how to im-prove our lifestyles to benefit the environment.
