French 2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)

winner Olmedo (Declaration Of

War), who is by the same sire as

this season’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1,

3200m) winner Vow And Declare and Victoria

Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) victor Warning, will

spearhead Aquis Farm’s Queensland stallion

roster this year.

The champion two-year-old son of

Declaration Of War (War Front) is the latest

stallion to join the roster of the ever-expanding

three-state breeding operation that shows no

signs of slowing down.

Ormedo’s retirement follows on from the

recent acquisition of Needs Further (Encosta

De Lago) (Victoria) and the retirement of

Pierata (Pierro) (NSW) and Dubious (Not A

Single Doubt) (Queensland).

And chief executive Tony “Tubba”

Williams believes Aquis Farm’s footprint on the

Australian racing and breeding industry is only

likely to grow. Continued on page 2>>

NZB Airfreight onTrack to Resume FlightsFollowing the temporary suspension of equine

exports last week due to a positive case of equine

piroplasmosis, NZB Airfreight is confident that

travel will resume shortly with increased testing

and pre-export protocols.

The single case of the tick-borne protozoal

disease was detected by the Ministry of Primary

Industries and grounded flights just two weeks

following the resumption of exports post

Covid-19.

NZB Airfreight has since worked closely with

MPI, the Department of Agriculture Australia

and Asure Quality to ensure minimum delay

and impact on future exports.

“There’s no doubt that we’ve got, over

the next couple of years, a dozen or so high-profile horses to go to stud in

addition to what we’re doing now,” Williams told ANZ Bloodstock News

yesterday.

“There’s been a building stage over the past three years with a certain

number of horses, but I would say that the quality level will take mighty

leaps and bounds in the next couple of years and we’re already starting

to do that.”

Secured by Aquis Farm late last year, the dual Group-winning

Olmedo will stand at an introductory fee of $16,500 (inc GST) alongside

fellow newcomer Dubious at the Canungra property in the Gold Coast

hinterland.

Williams believes Olmedo is a prime example of how far the Australian

thoroughbred breeding industry had come in the past three decades.

“From a Queensland perspective, Dubious and now Olmedo are both

seriously good prospects and Olmedo himself is the sort of horse that we

used to get the half-brothers to years ago and I am talking in Australia,”

he said.

“If we wind the clock back 30 years ago, we would stand half-brothers

to these horses but now we’ve got him. Have a look at the French Guineas

winners and have a look at the quality of horses who have won that race - it

has an exceptional record.

“The Kingmambos, the Blushing Grooms, the Green Deserts won the

race. I know they are a long time ago, but if you go right through it, it’s a

race where consistently high-quality horses win it, such as Shamardal and

Lope De Vega and they go on to be good stallions as well.”

Olmedo was imported to

Australia earlier this year to be

aimed at the Sydney autumn

carnival, but he was hindered

by a wet track when unplaced in

the Ajax Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at

Rosehill in mid-March at his only

Australian start under the care of

Kacy Fogden.

In a 13-start European career

for French trainer Jean-Claude

Rouget, Olmedo won his first start

at two at Deauville in a maiden,

before racing exclusively at Group

level which included five stakes

placings and a victory in the Prix

Gontaut-Biron (Gr 3, 2000m)

as well as the defining Guineas

performance.

He defeated Group 1 winners U S

Navy Flag (War Front), Robin Of Navan (American Poet) and Polydream

(Oasis Dream), as well as fellow Group 1 winners Masar (New Approach)

and Phoenix Of Spain (Lope De Vega) in his 14 starts.

Olmedo is out of the Pivotal (Polar Falcon) mare Super Pie who in turn

is a half-sister to the Group 2-placed Art Contemporain (Smart Strike). His

second dam is also the Group 3-placed, Group 1-performed Super Lina

(Linamix).

“Olmedo had two-year-old speed and three-year-old mile form and

he is a really, really high-profile horse for Queensland,” Williams said.

“I don’t know of any other imported horses who would have had

the same sort of race records standing in Queensland and he is a total

outcross as well.

“There are not many mares in the Australian Stud Book who couldn’t

visit him. The Danehill line, Zabeel line, Last

Tycoon line, the More Than Ready line

mares - you can just go on and on.”

Olmedo’s sire Declaration Of War

shuttled to Coolmore Australia in 2014

and 2015, siring seven stakes winners

from just two southern hemisphere

crops that also includes Queensland

Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m) victor Winning Ways.

He stood at Ashford Stud in the

US from 2015 to 2018 before being

secured by the Japan Race Horse

Association to stand at Shizunai

Stallion Station from 2019.

Williams said Olmedo was the

“highest-rated son of Declaration

Of War”, himself a stallion whose

statistics were “second to none”.

“Aquis has a very big book

of mares and we support each

stallion accordingly. Olmedo will

get a number of top mares and

that is going to help him long

term,” he said.

“He has a lot of quality, a lot of

presence and he’s a really good looking horse and if he throws what he is

himself, he’ll throw a really good sales horse.”

While Olmedo and Dubious will lead the Canungra base, Group

1-winning sprinter Pierata is arguably the most commercial first

season sire to stand at Aquis Farm so far and added to its Victorian

ranks with the recruitment of Needs Further from Tasmania’s Armidale

Stud.

Williams said the new stallions were receiving strong early bookings from

breeders after Aquis Farm learnt from its experience with Siege Of Quebec (Fastnet Rock) who failed to find

favour with the Victorian market last year.

“Obviously, no one likes to see that, and Siege Of Quebec is a good example, but that was what it was and

decisions were made and you move on,” he said,

“The main thing is, adding Needs Further to our Victorian roster and by working with Armidale Stud,

we have stabilised Victoria and we will be looking at other stallions for Victoria for the long-term as well.

“When you look this year with Pierata going to NSW - he’s probably the highest-

profile stallion to stand at Aquis in the Hunter Valley - he’s certainly stabilising

that roster and in Queensland this year we’ve retired Dubious to stud and

now we have Olmedo who I think is an unbelievable acquisition for

Queensland.”

Eight for Night Of Thunder

Former Darley shuttler Night Of Thunder

(Dubawi) sired his eighth southern hemisphere

winner yesterday, as Cherry Tortoni (2 g ex

Tortoni by Strategic) took out a 1200-metre two-

year-old maiden at Sale on debut. The Patrick

Payne-trained gelding sat four wide during

the run before rocketing home to defeat Not A

Zak (El Roca) by a length and a half with Miss

Conduct (Dissident) coming home a further

length away in third. Cherry Tortoni is out of

Tortoni (Strategic) who herself is out of Group

1 scorer Whisked (Whiskey Road), making her

a half-sister to 13-time Group 1 winner Tie The

Knot (Nassipour). Night Of Thunder stood one

season at Darley’s Northwood Park leaving

just 58 foals. He now permanently resides at

Darley’s Kildangan Stud in Ireland, covering for

a fee of €25,000 in 2020.

Fred Best to shape Stradbroke fieldSaturday’s Fred Best Classic (Gr 3, 1350m) will

take on even more importance this year, with

several horses needing to win in order to make

the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) field

next week. First acceptances were taken for the

Stradbroke yesterday with 44 horses currently

in the field. The Gai Waterhouse-Adrian Bott

trained Dawn Passage (Dawn Approach) will at

worst be an emergency as he is currently 21st on

the order of ballot however, he can put the issue

beyond doubt by winning the Fred Best which

is ballot exempt for the Stradbroke. Other Fred

Best runners who will need to win to make the

Stradbroke field are The Odyssey (Better Than

Ready) (32nd on the ballot), Grand Piano (Lord

Kanaloa) (34th), Subpoenaed (Rip Van Winkle)

(37th), Bellevue Hill (Pierro) (39th), Stampe

(Whittington) (49th), Scathing (Trusting)

(42nd) Garibaldi (I Am Invincible) (43rd) and

Petronius (Redoute’s Choice) (44th).

Scathing out to give Munce unusual achievementImproving three-year-old Scathing (Trusting)

is primed to give Chris Munce a chance to

complete the unusual double of training a stakes

winner after riding a stakes winner for the same

owners, when he contests the Fred Best Classic

on Saturday. Scathing is owned by the Gold

Coast's Henderson Racing syndicate, several of

whom raced Descarado (High Chaparral) who

Munce partnered to win the 2010 Caulfield Cup

(Gr 1, 2400m). "I have never had a stakes runner

for the Henderson's as a trainer, it would be

something unusual to complete a double like

that," Munce said. Munce believes Scathing

was good last start and had form around some

very smart horses. "Don't forget Scathing was

second to Alligator Blood when we were having

only our second race start,” he said. "I'm not

saying Scathing should have beaten Alligator

Blood but he should have finished closer. Most

of his form has been around some pretty smart

three-year-olds.”

Fighting Teo a possible Winter Cup candidateToowoomba stayer Fighting Teo (Teofilo)

could head to Sydney next month if he

races well in the Aquis Handicap (2400m)

at the Gold Coast tomorrow. The number of

distance races in Queensland this winter has

been drastically reduced due the limiting of

the carnival features and the main staying

race is the Tattersall’s Cup (Gr 3, 2400m)

on June 13. Trainer Kevin Kemp has the

Tattersall's Cup in mind for Fighting Teo, but

will use the Winter Cup (Listed, 2400m) as

a backup plan. "I will nominate him for the

Tattersall’s Cup and also the Winter Cup in

Sydney on the same day," Kemp said. "They

are both 2400 metres and the Sydney race

might be a bit weaker. The horse can get there

but I won't be able to travel with him. Either

way I reckon he will be suited by the trip."

Harrison to makelong-awaited returnStuart Kendrick is hopeful he can give jockey

Tegan Harrison a feature race winner on her

first day back at Doomben since she was

injured in a fall at the track nearly eight

months ago. Harrison is listed for two rides

at the Sunshine Coast tomorrow night but

will have her first city ride back from injury

on Tarzan (Drumbeats) in the Hinkler Stakes

(Listed, 1110m) on Saturday. She was riding

Nineoneone (Time For War) for Kendrick

when the filly fell at the 800-metre mark in

a race at Doomben on October 7, leaving her

with fractures to five vertebrae, two ribs and

her sternum. "She has won on him and after

scratchings he should come right in to only

a few off the rails which is ideal," Kendrick

said.

Capacity field forLord Mayors Cup

A capacity field of 16 plus three emergencies

have accepted for Saturday’s Lord Mayors

Cup (Listed, 2000m) at Rosehill, leaving early

favourite Bottega (Snitzel) in need of two

scratchings to gain a start. Sydney's premier

trainer Chris Waller has eight acceptors while

Kris Lees has four. The Ciaron Maher and David

Eustace-trained Dr Drill (Dansili) was one of

six horses who were acceptors for both the

Lord Mayors Cup and Saturday's Chairman's

Handicap (Listed, 2000m) in Brisbane but he

has already been scratched from the Brisbane

race. "We just decided to keep him down

here," assistant trainer for Maher and Eustace,

Annabel Neasham said. "He is going really well

and has come through his last run well. We'll

obviously keep an eye on the weather and the

track conditions but he's a very tough horse and

at this stage that's where we look like we'll run

him."

Supremo to kickoff at RosehillWell-related colt Supremo (Written Tycoon)

will make his debut in the Darley 2YO Handicap

(1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday. Purchased

by trainer John Thompson for $260,000 at the

Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Supremo

is out of Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner

Dizelle (Zabeel), making him a half-brother to

VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Pinot (Pierro),

Listed scorer Dizlago (Encosta De Lago) and

stakes placegetters Lucky Lago (Encosta de

Lago) and Rock Giselle (Fastnet Rock). "He

looks like he is a quality colt," Thompson said.

"Everything he has done up to date has been

top-class. He's just got to do it in a race now."

Waugh turns to Rawiller to unlock key to TrumbullFour-year-old gelding Trumbull (Darci Brahma)

has a bad habit of missing the start so trainer Kim

Waugh has turned to Nash Rawiller for Saturday’s

Schweppes Handicap (1500m) at Rosehill, in the

hope that the star jockey can get the best out of

him. “It’s definitely costing him races, and the

bad barriers, but I don’t know why because he’s

not doing anything in there,’’ Waugh told Racing

NSW of Trumbull’s casual starts. “It’s not as if he’s

a rogue, he’s really cool and he can actually ping

the lids. We’ve given him barrier practice and in

trials he doesn’t seem to have an issue. I think he

just seems to gel with some jockeys more than

others. It’s a bit of a mystery because the jockeys

can’t give me much reason why it’s happening.

Nash is good at getting them out of the barriers so

we are just hoping Trumbull likes Nash.’’

Inverloch to turn around formTrent Busuttin, who trains in partnership with

Natalie Young, has wiped Inverloch's (Fastnet

Rock) performance in the Warrnambool Cup

(Listed, 2350m) from the memory bank, and is

looking forward to a better performance in the

Neds Toolbox Handicap (2000m) at Caulfield

on Saturday. "It's pretty straight-forward for

him from that barrier (15 of 15), he'll be going

to the front," Busuttin said. "It was an absolute

miss run the Warrnambool Cup. We tried to

take a sit on him in behind the frontrunner,

but the horse over-raced, choked down and it

ended badly. So we've just put a line through

it. We won't be reinventing the wheel with him,

he'll go straight over to the front."

Prep swansong for News GirlBorder restrictions have proved to be a

headache for Corowa trainer Geoff Duryea and

his Caulfield-loving mare News Girl (Magnus),

but with the help of Victorian trainer Renee

Hoysted, they have made it work. News Girl

will contest the Le Pine Funerals Handicap

(1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday and has built

an impressive record at the track with three

wins and three minor placings from 12 starts.

"I've got to go to Wagga on Saturday to run in

a $12,000 race and she's running in a $100,000

race at Caulfield," Duryea told Racing.com.

"She's going all right. At this stage she will

definitely have a blow after Saturday and we

will see what happens in the future."

Deep Field coltConcealed impresses

Newgate Farm’s Deep Field (Northern Meteor)

sired yet another winner when promising two-

year-old Concealed led home a trifecta for the

Peter and Paul Snowden yard at Canterbury

yesterday. Concealed finished fifth on debut this

month having broken slowly, however the colt

built on that effort to finish with a strong run to win

the 1250-metre maiden by a long head. Concealed

was a $310,000 Magic Million purchase for China

Horse Club/Newgate Bloodstock from the Kia

Ora Stud draft. He is the second winner out of the

Group 3 winner Ashley’s Kitty (Tale Of The Cat),

a half-sister to US Grade 1 winner Cupid (Tapit).

Concealed is the 11th two-year-old winner this

season for Deep Field, who has had a fee increase

this year and stands for $55,000 (Inc GST).

Duncan unearthstalented son of AtlanteCaloundra trainer Paul Duncan produced another

staying prospect when debutante Genuine Al

(Atlante) landed a gamble with his win at the

Sunshine Coast yesterday. The official market

move on Genuine Al was $4 into $2.40 but most

corporate bookmakers quoted as much as $12

when markets first opened. Ridden from the front

by Stephanie Lacy, Genuine Al won over 1300

metres on Wednesday. Duncan said Genuine Al

has staying bloodlines on both sides of his family.

“Atlante has had a lot of success in New Zealand

and Genuine Al’s dam Genuine Offer won up to

2500 metres,” Duncan said. “I got Genuine Al at

the New Zealand Ready to Run sales. He has been

a bit of a handful but Stephanie (Lacy) has helped

get him right,” Duncan said.

Trainers waiton spring changesVictorian trainers are yet to see mooted spring

carnival programming changes that could

lead to the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) being

run after the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m).

The Melbourne Racing Club is investigating

changing the date of the Caulfield Cup from

mid-October to November 28 whilst also

moving their entire three-day carnival post-

Flemington. The Caulfield Cup has long been

one of the lead up races to the Melbourne Cup.

Racing Victoria have stated that any changes to

the program for the Melbourne spring carnival

won’t be announced until June. Australian

Trainers’ Association chief executive Andrew

Nicholl said his members had not seen the

draft proposal of how a new spring carnival

might look. “Racing Victoria has been debating

this at a high level with the race clubs,” Nicholl

told RSN. “The program people are looking

at, it talks about changes to 50 different races,

the introduction of races to fill voids,” he said.

“Ultimately if a trainer can achieve a pattern, or

mapping, in the program with a move, they will

probably be happy.”

Breakthrough Group 2 for Du Plessis

After recording his first Group 2 success in the

Victory Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) since relocating

to Queensland, jockey Mark du Plessis is now

focusing on the Stradbroke (Gr 1, 1400m). A

popular member of the New Zealand ranks

for two decades, Du Plessis has been based

in Brisbane since the 2018 winter carnival. At

Eagle Farm last Saturday, he won the Victory

Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on Victorem (I Am

Invincible). “In terms of Group status, that was

the biggest win I’ve had since I’ve been based

over here,” du Plessis told NZ Racing News. “I

have been fortunate enough to win a couple

of races with higher prize-money. There was

the Magic Millions QTIS on the Gold Coast,

which is a million-dollar race and I won it with

Chapter And Verse. And then then Kisukano

won the $500,000 Aquis Jewel (1200m) for me

in March. But it was a big thrill to pick up that

Group 2 win on Saturday.”

McGillivray suffers heavy fallMatthew McGillivray was transported to

hospital after falling heavily in race eight at the

Sunshine Coast yesterday. The jockey’s mount

Bel Strider (Unusual Suspect) appeared to

clip heels and fall forward after looming as a

winning chance in the straight. McGillivray was

reportedly concussed in the fall but was able to

move his legs after regaining consciousness.

McNeil injuredApprentice Logan McNeil is likely to miss

the rest of the season after suffering a broken

left foot in a trackwork accident on Tuesday.

McNeil, who is the younger brother of Victoria’s

premiership leading rider Jye, was riding work

for his master Gerald Egan when the incident

took place. “The horse I was riding slipped over

somehow and my foot got caught underneath

and was crushed,” McNeil told Racing.com.

“We’re still waiting for the full prognosis but

I’ve definitely got a few little fractures in my

foot and I will more than likely require surgery,

sometime next week I’d say.” The 19-year-old

has accumulated 32 victories during his career

and rode two winners at the Swan Hill meeting

on Sunday May 11, lifting his seasonal tally to

22 wins.

Heddo to leave ATCAfter 30 years of service to the Australian

thoroughbred racing industry, James Heddo,

the Australian Turf Club’s Executive General

Manager – Racing Services & Membership,

has resigned, effective July 31, to take up a

“lifestyle opportunity” closer to home on the

Central Coast. “I’m very proud of what I’ve

achieved in racing in my 32 years,” Heddo

said. “In some way, shape or form – in the

future – I’d still like to think I could contribute

to racing. What or how that is, who knows at

the moment.”

Canberra Acton meetings moved to course properRacing NSW have announced the following

Canberra Race Club meetings scheduled for the

winter months on the Acton Track (synthetic) will

now be conducted on the Course Proper (grass):

Friday June 19, Friday July 24, Friday August 7,

Friday August 21. Distance amendments will also

apply to each of the races, which can be found here.

NEW ZEALAND

Guineas races moved back to RiccartonThe Board of New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing

(NZTR) have announced that the 1000 Guineas

(Gr 1, 1600m) and 2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)

would remain at Riccarton for the 2020-21 season.

Extensive work was undertaken with stakeholders

when New Zealand was under lockdown on a

proposed calendar towards the start of the new

season. At the time of the discussion, there was

no indication as to how long travel restrictions

would last due to the coronavirus pandemic. A

relocation of the Guineas to the North Island was

proposed for the upcoming season. “Subsequent

events with the loosening of restrictions and the

hope that, by the time we resume racing, we will

be operating under alert level 1, led the board to

decide to leave the races at Riccarton,” NZTR chief

executive Bernard Saundry said.

South Island Sale launchesThe South Island’s stallions have been in good

form this season, headed by the achievements

of Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Etah James

(Raise The Flag). New Zealand Bloodstock’s South

Island Sale on Gavelhouse Plus will give buyers

Vale Eddie CarsonTrentham has lost one of its final training

stalwarts with the death on Tuesday morning

of Edward (Eddie) Carson. After suffering from

ill-health in recent years, Carson (87) passed

away peacefully at his home in the Mangaroa

Valley surrounded by members of his family,

including his wife of 60 years, Rosaleen. A hard-

working Irishman with a broad Irish accent and

an infectious smile, Carson became a fixture

at Trentham after gaining his owner-trainer’s

license on August 1, 1987 and he never lost his

passion for racing. His final racing thrill came

when Master Pat (Patapan), whom he bred and

raced in partnership with his wife, finished

second at Woodville on March 15, just over a

week before the Covid-19 lockdown.

INTERNATIONAL

Kentucky Derby favourite’s test results under review The Bob Baffert-trained Charlatan

(Speightstown), winner of the first of two

divisions of the Arkansas Derby (Gr 1, 9f) at

Oaklawn Park this month, did not pass initial

post-race testing, it has been reported. As a

result, testing is being done on a split sample,

according to a report in the BloodHorse. Bernie

Hettel, state steward at Oaklawn, confirmed on

Tuesday that two horses that raced on May 2

did not clear testing but, citing confidentiality,

said he was unable to provide horse names or

their connections. Baffert issued a statement on

Tuesday, which was acquired by BloodHorse.

"The rules of the Arkansas Racing Commission

mandate confidentiality concerning any

investigation into an alleged rule violation until

there is a written decision by the stewards," he

said. "I am extremely disappointed that, in this

instance, the Commission has not followed its

own rules for confidentiality.”

Shergar Cup cancelledThe Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup has become

the latest international sporting event to be

cancelled due to Covid-19, with officials at

Ascot citing potential international travel

complications. The meeting, which sees riders

represent teams from Great Britain and Ireland,

Europe, the rest of the world and a female-

only group, was scheduled to take place on

August 10, but will now not take place in 2020.

Ascot and the BHA will work to reschedule

the valuable handicaps in the absence of the

regular jockeys' competition. Ascot's director of

racing and public affairs Nick Smith explained:

"Regrettably, given the complexities of flying

jockeys around the world and uncertainty over

what governmental regulations will be in place

at the time, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup

won't take place this year."Eddie Carson RACE IMAGES

Following the temporary suspension

of equine exports last week

due to a positive case of equine

piroplasmosis, NZB Airfreight is

confident that travel will resume shortly with

increased testing and pre-export protocols.

The single case of the tick-borne protozoal

disease was detected by the Ministry of Primary

Industries and grounded flights just two weeks

following the resumption of exports post

Covid-19.

NZB Airfreight has since worked closely

with MPI, the Department of Agriculture

Australia and Asure Quality to ensure minimum

delay and impact on future exports.

While new regulations and safety plans are

already in place due to Covid-19, flights are

set to resume in the next two to three weeks

with a slightly longer lead in time due to new

requirements of pre-export blood testing

specifically for piroplasmosis.

NZB Airfreight Manager Greg Northcott

is hopeful that New Zealand can regain

nationwide freedom from piroplasmosis and

return to a simpler exporting process that

owners and breeders are accustomed to, once

the investigation is completed.

“Thanks to the detail and traceability

procedures of Cambridge Stud and the MPI

Investigation team, they were able to quickly

respond and provide confidence to our trading

partners that exporting of horses could resume,”

commented Northcott.

“We are aware of the urgency to get horses

across to Australia and further afield for racing

and breeding commitments.

“Our clients have been extremely patient

given the Covid-19 restrictions and now the

piroplasmosis set back that has caused a

significant delay in exports, so we appreciate

that and the tireless work of many officials to

get freighting back up and running as soon as

possible.”

NZB confirmed that they continue to work

closely with all regulatory bodies, airlines and

governments around the world to get travel lines

open to all of our major racing jurisdictions.

Eligible employers will be able to receive

and pay the JobKeeper payments to various

employee categories, including, but not limited

to:

• Employees who were employed by you as employees as at March 1, 2020;

• Employees currently employed by you (including those stood down or re-hired);

• Employees who are full-time, part-time, or long-term casuals (to get the payment for

a casual employee, they must have been employed by you on a regular basis for longer

than 12 months as at March 1, 2020); and• Employees who are not in receipt of a

JobKeeper Payment from another employer.

• Special eligibility for horse business structures with no employeesPresuming the above eligibility conditions for employers and

employees are satisfied, note below how a “nominated” employee for the

following common business structures are eligible to receive JobKeeper.

• Sole traders

The proprietor will be eligible if they do not receive JobKeeper from

another source.Another reminder: for verification purposes, businesses without

employees, such as a sole trader:• will need to provide an ABN for their business;

• nominate an individual to receive the payment;

• provide that individual’s Tax File Number; and

• provide a declaration as to the recent business activity of that business.

Sole traders are easily the most common horse structures and, as

such, it is worth sharing that if you are also employed on a wage and

would like to receive JobKeeper as a sole trader, rather than through your

employer, you can nominate yourself as the “eligible business participant”

Carrazzo Consulting Pty Ltd | Chartered Accountants - www.carrazzo.com.au

under the business participation rules and give appropriate notice to the

ATO. In this scenario, your employer cannot nominate you for JobKeeper

payments.

• PartnershipsA single partner in a partnership can be nominated. This single

partner must not be receiving JobKeeper from another source.• Trusts

A single individual beneficiary of a trust can be nominated to receive

JobKeeper payments. This individual beneficiary must not be receiving

JobKeeper from another source. The beneficiaries of a trust are outlined and defined within its trust deed.

• CompaniesA single director or shareholder of a company can be nominated.

These businesses will also receive JobKeeper payments for their other

eligible employees. This single director must not be receiving JobKeeper from another

source.

These initiatives are a step forward, but

it is noted by accounting bodies, such as CPA

Australia, that they have limitations in ensuring

equitable access to JobKeeper within trust,

partnership, and company structures. They will

recommend to government that the ‘business

participant’ test be extended to all actively

engaged persons in trusts, partnerships and

companies. For more details on JobKeeper, please refer

to our recent release titled “JobKeeper subsidy

for businesses and employees” on the Carrazzo

blog at www.carrazzo.com.au.

Of all the recent government Covid-19 initiatives recently announced, it is generally thought that the JobKeeper payment for employers is only available to profitable horse businesses that have established employees. If you thought this was the case, read on, upon review of the recently announced JobKeeper legislation, I have some pleasant surprises for you.Below, I will work through the four common business structures and explain how it is possible for business owners that operate as sole traders or through trusts, partnerships and companies, to be eligible for JobKeeper even if their businesses are currently in losses and/or they aren’t being paid wages.

JobKeeper – positive updatecould benefit your horse business

JobKeeper payment – quick overviewA JobKeeper payment is a minimum payment ($1,500 per fortnight) the Government will pay to eligible businesses (defined below) to ensure they are able to keep their eligible employees (defined below) employed by them during this Covid-19 period. The first payment will be received by employers from the ATO in the

first week of May, 2020 and will be backdated to be payable from the scheme commencement of March 30, 2020. Payments under JobKeeper can be received up to September 27, 2020.• Eligible employers

All businesses who meet the turnover tests below can now register their interest with the ATO to receive the JobKeeper payment for their employees. Update to “Turnover tests” for employers All businesses (including sole traders) can now register their interest to

receive the JobKeeper payments for their employees (or themselves if sole traders) if they meet the various turnover tests. The most applicable test to the horse industry is that their turnover has been reduced by more than 30 per cent relative to a comparable period a year ago (of at least a month).

Since our original release on JobKeeper a few weeks ago, the ATO has given more details as to how to apply the “turnover test”. This is a crucial consideration for employers and is noted below.

How to calculate a fall in turnover for the first fortnight starting 30 March 2020To work out your fall in turnover, you can compare either:• GST turnover for March, 2020 with GST turnover for March, 2019• projected GST turnover for April, 2020 with GST turnover for April, 2019• projected GST turnover for the quarter starting April 2020 with GST

turnover for the quarter starting April, 2019How you choose to project your fall in turnover is not dependent on whether you report a quarterly or monthly BAS, though you can do that if it is easier.

If you work out that you qualify for the JobKeeper payments for the first fortnight because your turnover has declined by the relevant amount, you remain eligible and do not need to keep testing turnover in following months. However, you will have ongoing monthly reporting requirements. More information will be provided soon. The ATO also has the discretion to set out alternative tests that can

establish your eligibility when turnover periods are not appropriately comparable (for example, if your business has been in operation less than a year). We will provide more information soon about alternative tests.

Emirates Park Stud - banking on the former star

Tassort, the half-brother to Group 1 winners

Alizee (Sepoy) and Astern (Medaglia D’Oro)

will stand for $11,000 (inc GST), with Newgate’s

“The interest has been very good,

and probably better than we thought, and by design we held back on

announcing fees just because we needed to see where the market sat, see

what the appetite was and just get a feel for what the market is saying,” Cox

told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“We think we have got a relative idea on where it all sits, but those

three in particular have demanded a lot of interest at this early stage.”

While conscious of the prevailing market outlook caused by the global

pandemic, Cox said the deeds of Exceed And Excel demanded that the

rising 20-year-old’s service fee was put up from $88,000 in 2019 given his

recent achievements.

Buyers have also recognised Exceed And Excel’s consistent

performance as an elite sire, with a colt making $1.7 million at the Easter

sale last year and another son at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast

Yearling Sale fetching $1.8 million, the second highest-priced yearling

sold at auction in Australasia this year.

“He has got three Group 1-winning colts at the moment and two

recently retired, Microphone and Exceedance and for Bivouac, it is our

intention to race him on next season,” he said.

“Having said that, those horses are winning the proper races - the

right races - and it shows with what the horse is doing in the sale ring as

well. Exceed is a horse who can change your postcode, whether you are

racing one or if you have got one in the sale ring.

“When a horse has that sort of effect generally you expect that to be

reflected in his price and that is where we’ve moved him to.”

Darley has maintained the 2019 service fees of Victorian-based

stallions Street Boss (Street Cry) ($27,500) and Brazen Beau (I Am

Invincible) ($49,500), the leading second season sire by stakes winners

with five, in front of money-earning leader Rubick (Encosta De Lago)

(two) and Deep Field (Northern Meteor) (three).

The remainder of Darley’s stallion roster, including champion Lonhro

(Octagonal) ($66,000), Astern (Medagalia d’Oro) ($22,000), Epaulette

(Commands) ($22,000) and Harry Angel (Dark Angel) ($16,500), have all

had their service fees reduced.

“I think he’s

going to come as a little bit of a shock and a

surprise to the market that he is standing under

the Newgate banner, but he’s a horse we just felt

deserved his chance,” Slade told ANZ Bloodstock

News yesterday.

“Obviously, he raced in the Godolphin

colours and I think everyone’s first memory of the

horse is that he is that X-factor horse that was the

early favourite for the Golden Slipper. Everyone

was so excited after his debut to see where he’d

go and where he’d get to, but unfortunately, due

to injury, he was never able to fulfill the potential

that he had shown on debut.”

That debut was an electric five and a quarter

length victory in the Golden Gift (1100m) at

Rosehill in November, 2018. It was a win that saw

Tassort assume early favouritism for that season’s Golden Slipper Stakes

(Gr 1, 1200m), with form analysts rating his performance through the

roof: The Rating Bureau’s Daniel O’Sullivan declared it a “Group 1 class”

performance that was “stamped

by a sharp turn of foot, terrific late

strength and fast overall time”,

placing him in rarefied company.

Unfortunately, the colt only

raced once more, when he was

sent out as an odds-on favourite

in the Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2,

1100m) at Rosehill. Slow from the

stalls, he settled near the rear in an

evenly-run race, making ground

late into second but unable to reel

in Time To Reign (Time For War).

“We had key indicators

through this horse’s career that

told us he was elite and just

never had the chance to show it,”

Slade said. “We are big on time ratings and data. Daniel O’Sullivan from

The Ratings Bureau gave this guy a 103 on debut when he won. He was

impressive to the eye that day but when the time data came back, it said,

listen, this is as impressive a two-year-old debut that we’ve seen since the

likes of Estijaab and Extreme Choice. To be honest, at the time, we thought

we had a colt to be really concerned about on the racetrack, wearing our

Newgate cap!

“Obviously we never got to see that ability but on the back of that

performance, that debut, James McDonald came out and said he was the

real deal and James Cummings was very much of the same opinion, he

had a very high opinion of the horse. Everyone that had something to do

with him plus the time data suggested he had the ability to be that real

elite performer.

Slade continued: “At the end of the day, for all of us, our key criteria

for any young stallion standing at Newgate is that elite race performance.

Horses don’t have to win their Group 1s, but if they showed elite

performance, they generally are your best chance of becoming an

important stallion.

“I just feel you only have to look at the general sires list to see that. They are

either proper, proper Group 1 horses, or they were horses who had that ability but

didn’t get to showcase their true potential.

$410,000, Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale 2019

V: Segenhoe Stud P: Terry Snow

Margins: 2.3 lens, 0.1 lens. Time: 1:16.15 (last 600m 37.29).

Betting: $21.00, $3.50, $7.00.

Then followed: Angel Helena (AUS), Zelify (AUS), Karauna (AUS) &

Found Our Thrill (AUS), last.

Analysis: After missing the start badly on debut when seventh in a two-

year-old maiden (1000m) at Kembla on May 7, the Richard and Michael

Freedman-trained filly Samiam Seussie staged a promising effort in

winning here. Showing improved barrier manners, she settled nicely in

fourth place on the rails, but was under pressure when a distant third at

the turn. She then responded well to take the lead in the closing stages

and then drew away to score decisively. Ballistic Lover showed good

pace to lead and then travelled along really well before grabbing a clear

advantage at the turn, looking the winner, only fading in the latter stages

to hold second in a photo from Willinga Panache who made good late

ground for third. [KB]

Then followed: Sole Heir (AUS), Scenic Warrior (NZ), California Cible

(AUS), Le Vizir (AUS), Black Meteor (AUS) & Sea Boss (AUS), last.

Analysis: Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colts filled the placings here

with Concealed scoring a narrow but good win when having his second

race start. He settled nicely in fifth place (on the rails), tracking a good

tempo before taking a split at the turn. He moved up at the 100m and

then came with a strong late bid to score by a long head at the post.

Edmond raced outside the leader (Sole Heir), hit the front, challenged

at the turn, took the lead at the 100m and then held on well for second.

Oregon did not show any early pace and after being a clear last early

on, he settled at the tail of the field and remained there until improving

(between runners) at the turn. He then kept making good ground to take

third in a promising debut, looking suited to further. [KB]

(10), he settled midfield and deep before improving (still deep)

approaching the turn. He then moved up strongly, took the lead at the

100m and then drew away to score easily. It was a really good effort and

he is a horse to watch. [KB]
