Remmers are renowned for their technical innovations in materials for facade restoration and protection. This includes systems for natural stone and brickwork, timber framed infill, rendered and reinforced concrete substrates. Heritage, traditionally built and modern structures all around the world are protected, successfully restored and refurbished with Remmers systems.

One of the primary requirements for facades is the prevention of water ingress and the management of water and water vapour movement through and out of the building, particularly from the fabric of the building

envelope. This is of course exactly the same for the foundations and any below ground areas of building structures. Therefore it is no surprise that Remmers are also leading experts in the waterproofing and protection of these important areas too. Our advanced systems provide the latest technologies for internal tanking, external ground water protection and containment. In addition there are many special solutions for all types of water stopping, such as replacement damp-proof courses (dpc), through resin injection.

Equally well known is Remmers expertise in resin flooring for all

types of industrial, manufacturing and commercial applications. These include the high-tech electronics industry, aerospace and automotive, pharmaceutical, food and beverage industries, plus education, utility and service facilities such as schools, kitchens, wash rooms, workshops, restaurants, and retail stores. Wherever fast project opening or minimal downtime and closure during refurbishment is essential, our systems provide the right solution. These have been developed for application onto most common substrates to produce the required properties from the finished floor surface.

REMMERS DECK WATERPROOFING SYSTEMSA System Solution for Every Environment

The combination of Remmers technologies and expertise in facade restoration and protection, together with all types of waterproofing and flooring, means that Remmers can provide ideal waterproofing solutions for all types of decks, podiums and balconies – in both new build and restoration works and on all different types of projects.

From the waterproofing of podium decks which must keep the basement or parking structure below dry; to the waterproofing of balconies with attractive non-slip coatings, that must

also prevent water and salt ingress to the reinforcing steel, Remmers have it all completely covered. Additionally roof decks are waterproofed and protected with our wide range of liquid applied waterproofing membranes.

To ensure that even in the toughest of all building environments decks are protected, we also produce a wide range of systems for car park deck waterproofing. Here, the mechanical wear and abrasion combines with the worst in environmental exposure, which therefore demands tough, durable and secure solutions.

Remmers’ polymer systems are developed from many different raw materials to provide a range of waterproofing products and systems. These are based on polymer cements, bitumen emulsions, epoxy resins, polyurethane and hybrid or combined material solutions. Exciting new Remmers developments in silicate technology mean that we are leading the world with a new generation of protective products that are produced with huge reductions in carbon demand – thereby also reducing the carbon footprint of your project.

ECOLOGY AND SUSTAINABILITYAt the Heart of Remmers Business

Across all of the areas of Remmers technology and expertise, ecology and sustainability are much more than a current trend or marketing gimmick. They are a clear focus, a clear corporate commitment and the main driving force for our extensive research and development team throughout our ‘state of the art’ laboratories, production and distribution facilities.

Remmers has pioneered the development and use of high performance water based coating materials and the removal of toxic substances from preservatives and impregnations for many years. Other notable and internationally important Remmers innovations include:

Peelable cleaning poultices which can be recycled as rubber crumb

Fillers for resin and cement binders based upon recycled materials

100% inorganic silicate binders with the lowest order CO2 demand

Highest renewable raw materials content in our latest binders

Safe biological control, replacing biocides with nano-silver technology

Cream consistency products which dramatically reduce waste

Innovative packaging solutions to speed application and reduce waste disposal

Waterproofing products reducing heat loss from buildings thus reducing energy demand

A further specific example of our environmental commitment in the deck waterproofing market is the new Remmers Eco-Line deck coating system. This is based on an

extremely tough ‘new generation’ of water based epoxy and elastic polyurethane polymer binders. These have a high proportion of fillers from recycled materials and the new polymer binders are developed from renewable resources. This allows the Eco-Line system to be installed with a sustainable draw on the earth’s natural resources. It also provides contractors with the best ‘state of the art’ materials, which are safer to work with.

Decks, podiums and balconies can all have to withstand the equivalent of the combined stresses imposed on building facades and industrial floors, due to their being both externally exposed and trafficked. So, to be durable and effective, the surface protection and waterproofing must accommodate this wide variety of stress.

Following the necessary building condition survey and assessment of these stresses and their possible combinations, we can provide the

ideal specification for cost-effective and durable deck waterproofing and protection. Due to our understanding of the function and overall exposure of the structure and its surfaces, this is designed to be efficient throughout a long service life.

Remmers can provide full schematic design drawings for all of the details and we produce and supply all of the necessary ancillary materials for these details, including bedding mortars, grouts, pre-formed joints and sealants.

DECKS AND THEIR EXPOSUREDefining the Waterproofing System Requirements

9

External weatheringWeathering exposure to sun, wind, rain, snow, UV light, temperature changes, plus freeze-thaw conditions in winter, marine atmospheres and industrial pollution in the air.

Differential movementDifferential movement between different elements and substrates can occur due to thermal stresses, imposed static and dynamic loads.

Chemical exposureChemical exposure due to vehicle oils and hydraulic fluids, plus many other potentially harmful liquid spillages from household and industrial cleaners, all types of beverages plus de-icing salts in winter.

Mechanical abrasion and wearMechanical abrasion and wear from different types of traffic, from light occasional foot traffic to very heavy vehicular traffic - particularly in turning areas or ramps.

Slip resistanceSlip resistance is required where the decking will be directly trafficked. This always has to be balanced with the need for the surfaces to be easily cleaned.

Drainage detailsDrainage details and fittings must be carefully incorporated and sealed into the deck waterproofing system - no problem with the range of Remmers detailing solutions.

Crack bridging requirementsIf the waterproofing integrity is to be maintained in areas subject to cracking, crack bridging properties are best achieved using Remmers reinforced elastic waterproofing systems.

Root penetration resistanceDamage by plant roots in integrated planting boxes is easily avoided by selecting the appropriate Remmers waterproofing system.

Supporting structureThe condition of the supporting structure must be surveyed and assessed prior to successful deck waterproofing. Any corroding reinforcing steel or damaged concrete must first be repaired - no problem with Remmers systems.

External public access balconies are an integral part of the design of the flats which form much of the UK’s housing stock. On some they were an innovative design feature – for example on many original ‘art deco’ structures.

This trend has continued, particularly as it is a cheap method of building multiple homes, or luxury apartments with private balconies. These are easily produced as cantilevered extensions of the floor slabs over the structural walls.

Unfortunately this external location means direct exposure to weathering, with high thermal variations leading to movement and cracking. Rainfall then allows water into these cracks.

Frost with freeze-thaw cycling, further increases the size and extent of these cracks. The frequent pedestrian traffic with de-icing salts in winter, also exacerbates the problems, which can lead to damage to the fabric of the building and if not repaired, to dangerous and costly structural damage.

Remmers advanced range of systems is designed to protect new balconies and completely repair and protect existing ones. This is by the systematic selection and application of protective deck waterproofing treatments to accommodate all of these requirements. New decks are protected and existing ones are made as good as new.

Cleaning and preparationConcrete and cement screed surfaces must be cleaned and then mechanically prepared by blast cleaning or equivalent means. Asphalt surfaces are cleaned and abraded.

Crack / leak sealingAny cracks or leaks through the concrete or screed substrate must be sealed and filled. Where necessary these are also reinforced with Remmers resin bound fleece reinforcement.

Substrate repairThe substrate must be repaired and made good with an appropriate Remmers repair system (cement or resin based) to provide a sound, uniform and level substrate.

PrimingThe correct priming coat for the waterproofing system selected is uniformly applied to seal the prepared surfaces. Epoxy based for concrete surfaces and PUR based for asphalt.

Base coat / fleece reinforcementThe base layer of the selected balcony deck system is applied, spike rollered and where required broadcast with aggregates to increase slip resistance. Fleece reinforcement can also be embedded at this stage.

Top coatThe top coat and surface wearing layer can also have aggregates incorporated for increased slip resistance, or it may be used as the final sealing coat on some of the un-reinforced systems.

Additional coatsAdditional coats of the materials are used to seal in the aggregates and provide a more easily cleanable finish. Additional sealing coats also enhance colours and increase durability and resistance.

Coving / skirtingAt the perimeter edges the system must be correctly finished into the drainage details and coved or taken seamlessly up any adjacent vertical surfaces.

A podium deck is one that is raised above the general level of its surroundings. Often these are used in commercial properties such as hotels, large residential developments or other complexes, to form features such as impressive entrance lobbies, terraces, delivery areas or arrivals and departure zones.

They are usually built in much the same way as balconies, by extensions of the floor or roof slabs to create and take advantage of the additional space or to develop a design feature. They have all of the typical requirements, functions and exposure of public balconies. However with their greater width the exposure is also potentially greater, as is their thermal movement capability – according to the structural design of course.

Podium decks are often required to have particularly decorative features including paving and planters built into them, or to function as car parks and access roads, even for heavy goods vehicles - creating even higher stresses.

Remmers produces a complete range of systems for the waterproofing of all types of podium decks. These include systems for directly trafficked surfaces and also for those to be covered with other top surfacing materials, including road asphalt, decorative paving or ceramic tiles for example.

PODIUM DECK WATERPROOFINGDefining the System Requirements

16

Cleaning and preparationSurfaces must be cleaned and then mechanically prepared by blast cleaning or equivalent mechanical means, according to their condition.

Cracks / leak sealingAny cracks in the substrate must be filled at the surface and where necessary sealed with Injection Resin PUR, to ensure the integrity of the structure before waterproofing .

Substrate repairThe substrate must be repaired and made good with Remmers repair systems (cement or resin based) to produce a sound and uniform surface suitable for waterproofing.

PrimingThe prepared surfaces must be primed with Kiesol for Remmers cementitious or bitumen based systems and with PUR Primer PE-K for the highly crack bridging PUR Roof Coat WF system.

Base coatsThe first waterproofing layer is applied by slurry brush for cement based systems and by trowel for bitumen based systems. The PUR systems are usually applied by squeegee.

ReinforcementWhere required the waterproofing system can be reinforced by embedding suitable fleece reinforcement, always allowing at least 50mm overlaps at joints and around details such as drainage and coving to upstands.

Top coatingAn additional coat of the same base waterproofing material can be applied as a top coat to further increase the performance and durability with all of the Remmers systems.

Surface protectionThe waterproofed surfaces are often to be used for functions requiring specific surfacing materials. The waterproofing system must be suitably protected before overcoating.

17

Finished podium deckOnce protected the waterproof podium can be overlaid and landscaped as required with all types of paving and other surfacing materials.

CAR PARK DECKS - THE REMMERS SYSTEM BUILD-UPS

Wat

Multi-storey car parks have been described as being constructed to building standards, but without the watertight roof, facade and windows. Then they are exposed in a similar way to civil engineering structures, which have to be designed and built to far more stringent standards. Whilst this may seem an extreme analogy, it is frequently a good summary of the situation that exists, with open exposure to rainfall, direct sunlight, low and high temperatures, plus traffic impact and a high level of de-icing salt usage.

The degree of exposure clearly varies from the extremes of the weather onthe top decks, through variablelevels on the intermediate decks.

Abrasion also varies with increased mechanical wear on the ramps. There are also the special requirements of basement waterproofing and water / moisture management for any decks which are below ground. Many underground car park deck coatings have to be vapour permeable, to prevent moisture build up and therefore prevent blistering of the protective deck surfacing.

All of these performance requirements make stringent demands and are important product selection criteria. The advanced Remmers car park deck waterproofing systems, including the latest sustainably sourced Eco-Line range, can safely and securely accommodate all of these demands.

CAR PARK DECK WATERPROOFINGDefining the System Requirements

20

Cleaning and preparationConcrete deck surfaces must be cleaned and then mechanically prepared by blast cleaning or equivalent means. Asphalt surfaces are milled and ground.

Crack / leak sealingAny cracks or leaks through the substrate must be sealed and filled. Where necessary these are also reinforced with Remmers resin bound fleece reinforcement.

PrimingThe correct Remmers primer is selected according to the waterproofing system (vapour permeable, rigid or crack bridging) and it is uniformly applied to seal the prepared surfaces. A second scratch coat layer may be required for very irregular surfaces.

Base coatThe base layer of the selected system is applied and spike rollered, where required, broadcast with the selected slip resistant aggregate (not in crack bridging systems). For reinforced systems the fleece is embedded in the ‘wet’ base coat at this stage.

Intermediate / top coatThe next layer either seals the aggregate surfaces or provides a broadcast support layer to accept and fix the quartz aggregates, providing the surface slip resistance.

Additional top coatsOn ramps or tight turning circles with increased wear and abrasion from traffic, an additional top coat can be applied to increase durability.

Coving / skirtingAll detailing work should be sealed before proceeding to the deck waterproofing stage to ensure complete watertightness and optimum aesthetics.

21

Line markingSignage and lane/bay marking lines plus any other delineation or designated markings are easily applied with the appropriate Remmers coatings.

Substrate repairThe substrate must be repaired and made good with an appropriate Remmers repair system (cement or resin based) to provide a sound, uniform and level substrate.

Flat roofs are constantly exposed to the full effects of external weathering, which explains why the type of roof and the waterproofing systems required on a new project are always defined first by the architect. This is because this also dictates the nature of the structure required to support it and flat roofs are designed in order for the maximum usable space to be provided inside the building.

Unfortunately flat roofs can also be inefficient in their ability to shed water during rainfall or snow melt and therefore can often accumulate water. This accelerates the deterioration of roof membranes and waterproofing systems. They can also harbour more dirt and debris, plus at joints and details around penetrations, such as service ducts or pipes, the stresses on the waterproofing systems are

concentrated, leading to damage and accelerated deterioration.

Remmers cold applied, liquid waterproofing membranes allow rapid and secure protection for the refurbishment of deteriorated asphalt and bituminous felt membranes. They are also ideal for direct application to provide elastic crack bridging protection on concrete and cement screed surfaces. This minimises cost and disruption, plus importantly unlike bitumen roofing materials, they require no naked flames on site.

On metal roofs, cut-edge corrosion can be a serious problem on the edges of the roof’s component metal sheet profiles. Remmers also offer a proven system to repair and protect these associated difficult areas.

FLAT ROOF DECK WATERPROOFINGDefining the System Requirements

24

Cleaning workSurfaces should be cleaned to remove all loose materials, moss, organic growth and loose chippings or failed waterproofing etc. Treat all surfaces with BFA Remover or Green Growth Remover.

Priming - Metal SurfacesClean metal surfaces with a wire brush to ‘bright steel’ and apply one coat of Rust Inhibitor EP 2K to protect and seal the surface.

Priming – General SurfacesApply the overall primer, where required, to the cleaned surfaces by brush or roller. Allow to become touch dry before proceeding with the waterproofing system application.

Base coatApply a heavy base coat of the selected Remmers PUR coating ready to receive the fleece reinforcement. Normally this is 60% - 70% of the material required.

Reinforcement Press the fleece reinforcement into the base coating with a suitable roller ensuring that air is removed and avoid creases and folds. Ensure at least 50mm overlaps at joints and details.

EncapsulationApply the remaining quantity of the base coat whilst the first layer is still ‘wet’. Ensure there is sufficient material to fully encapsulate the fleece using a short pile roller.

Top coat Where required for increased performance or enhanced durability, an additional top coat of the selected Remmers PUR coating can be applied.

25

Metal roof: Cut-edge corrosionWhere corrosion damage has occurred on areas of existing metal roofs, the Remmers cut-edge corrosion protection system can be applied to reseal the surface and extend the service life.

Metal roof: Cut-edge protection The Remmers cut-edge corrosion protection system is applied as a bead of special sealant and two encapsulation coats to all cut edges.
