Update on Capital Projects
Refurbishing resident rooms: Thank you to residents, families and staff who have positively
commented about the refurbished resident mock up room in Konvalyia. The room will be
occupied by a resident, so that it can be road tested by staff and the resident who will provide
immediate feedback. It will also be a display suite for those who wish to come to Kalyna Care.
We have progressed with the tender to refurbish all Konvalyia resident rooms, and 12 Maja
Hrudka rooms. As you know there is a due diligence and negotiation process. We hope to start
sometime in February 2019. Unfortunately, there will be noise and disruption due to con-
struction for about 12 months. We will endeavour to finish the project is quickly as possible.
Solar Panels: Unfortunately, due to inclement weather, the solar panel installers were held up at another project which
impacted on our installation. Due to the Christmas break, the solar panel installers have given us an alternate installation
date of January 14 2019. I will continue to provide you with updates which may impact on you as soon as I get them.
40-Bed extension: The council has given approval to proceed with our 40-bed extension. What an exciting time! While we
organise a tender as a separate project to build the extension, the Konvalyia and MH refurbishment project
will continue. There is no rest for us to build a contemporary environment for our residents!

Changes to Management
Sarah Sida, our incoming Manager, Care Services resigned shortly after she
arrived. As a result, Alenita Espiritu our senior RN at Kalyna Care has been
appointed Acting Manager, Care Services supported by Davinder Kaur, another
senior RN at Kalyna Care. I am extremely proud of how all our staff stepped up
as a solid team with many voluntarily offering help.
“A rising tide raises all boats”.
I have already started the recruitment and interviewing process. With the Christmas break next week, it will be a slower
process than normal as we all take time to have a break and reflect on 2018.
I take this opportunity to welcome Derick Cavalho as Hotel Services Supervisor on a 6 month contract to help us bed
down our new processes.

The Verchovyna Ukrainian Dance Ensemble came back to perform for Kalyna Care on Saturday 8th December. Three levels of dancers performed for our residents some very familiar and well known dances from different areas of Ukraine which highlighted the tradition and stories from days past. The residents had a wonderful time watching the dances and interacting with the young performers – some of whom are related to residents. Each dance was accompanied by an explanation of the dance’s history and colourful costumes by the leader Julianna Moravski. The residents and visitors on the day thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. The Ensemble has promised to come back in 2019.
Holodomor Remembrance Commemoration. On the 23rd November 2018, Kalyna Care residents gathered to honour the memory of the 1932-33 Holodomor in Ukraine. Marko Pavlyshyn gave a heart warming speech along with some informative slides. We would like to thank Marko Pavlyshyn for his presentation. Your years of research, your depth of understanding and your ability to present the subject in such an interesting way produced a memorable afternoon for our residents.

Deb D’Costa’s Farewell. On the 7th December 2018, Kalyna Care hosted a farewell Morning Tea for Deb D’Costa. This was attended by past directors, residents and their families. She will be missed greatly by
residents and staff. Deb has been working at Kalyna Care in various departments for 21 years. We would like to thank Deb for her commitment and hard work.

4 Changes to front access door
Kalyna Care prides itself in ensuring that our residents are safe and well cared for. The
new standards which will be effective from 1 July 2019 make residents central to all
decision making. For many years, most if not all who come to Kalyna Care know how to
enter the PIN number on the keypads to come in and leave the premises. While we may
change the PIN number, just as you change your PIN number for your credit cards, we still
have to provide the new PIN to those who come in regularly, and we are unable to
monitor who comes in as the current device is a simple keypad access.
To remain contemporary and observe continuous improvement in our operations, the
front access will be via FOB keys. Each family will be issued one fob key with a bond which
will be refunded on return of the fob. The fob will allow 24 hours access, 7 days a week
to the facility. Additional fobs can be ordered and will also be with a bond which will be
refunded on return of the fob. Kalyna Care is working with the communications group
during refurbishment to ensure compatibility with access to individual resident rooms.
This way, residents and families are assured of privacy and security. We will be sending
you a separate correspondence regarding the logistics of rolling this out.
For visitors who do not have a FOB key,
there will be a new intercom and CCTV
overhead which will allow the front
office to open the doors during business
hours and the RN-in-Charge to do the
same after hours.
Resident Outing Register and Resident Food Register
When Kalyna Care started as an under-50 bed
facility, everyone knew each other and watched
out for each other. This included knowing who has
gone out with families or friends, and who has had
a box of chocolates given!
As we have grown to over 100 beds – we need to
have proper processes in place to ensure each
resident is well-minded and we know who has
gone on an outing with families and friends or who has had food brought in for
them. While most families will tell the RN or staff, that they are taking mum or dad
out, there has been many occasions where other staff see a resident leave our
premises with someone, but not sure if care staff have been told, and may be too
late to catch the resident leaving to check!
We now have a register on the sign in table for all to fill in if you are taking someone
out for an outing.
Similarly, it is important we have a record of food brought into the premises to ensure that we
understand and know the source of the food brought in by well-meaning families and friends for
residents. This will assist us with retaining comprehensive information about their diet.
We now also have a register on the sign in table for all to fill in if you are bringing food in for a
resident. It is critically important that food brought in by families and friends not be shared with other
residents. We know how hard it is at times not to share and it is contra to the natural instinct to share.
However, we have residents who may be allergic to or not permitted to have certain foods which you
may not be aware of, and if consumed will be detrimental to their health.
We ask for your cooperation to not share food with other residents.
Kalyna Care wishes you
all a Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Year
Festive Season and Christmas Greetings
As we move into the preparation of the Christmas period and the Orthodox Christmas
period, and the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ by all Christian denominations,
we reflect on the year just about gone and give thanks to all families, friends and staff
who have made a difference to our residents. We wish you all joy and peace.
Kalyna Care would like to give a big thank you to
everyone who has generously donated items for
various fundraising events throughout the year.
These things are all greatly appreciated.
