Value Added Ag Development – Approximately 40 regional leaders from across the Planning and Development District III’s service territory met in Corsica on November 17th to discuss how to provide better site selection information to prospective businesses seeking to grow here.

Representatives from local elected officials, economic developers, Planning & Zoning staff, utility providers, county and state highway personnel and representatives from the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) and Department of Ag discussed the current site selection process and how to overcome gaps in current data that would

enhance value-added ag development projects.

The State of South Dakota continues to receive inquires on value-added ag development projects that will need to be served by a region – rather than a single community.

Both Mitchell Area Development Corporation and Dakota Heartland Development Association assisted District III with the planning and implementation of this event.

Cracked TeethDid you know… Cracks in teeth can develop for a number of reasons, including clenching, grinding, and large fi llings which weaken the surrounding tooth structure. Symptoms of a cracked tooth can be sensitivity, pain on biting, or there may be no symptoms until the tooth breaks. Cracks will never get smaller; they will only propagate and grow larger. At some point a piece of the tooth can break off and this can be painful. Th e best way to treat a cracked tooth is to cover the whole tooth with a crown made of strong porcelain or metal, which protects the tooth from breaking. For more information check out our website or call 605-996-9944 to make an appointment with Dr. Farnham or Dr. Weber.

Hundreds of visitor industry professionals wouldn’t dream of missing the South Dakota Governor’s Conference on Tourism, and you shouldn’t either! Online registration has officially opened and the conference schedule has been set. Mark your calendars for January 19-21, 2016, or learn more at SouthDakotaTourismConference.com.

This year the conference will feature three keynote speakers:

Christine Cashen – Get What You Want With What You’ve Got The fact is: we are all forced to do more with less – fewer staff, declining resources, and 40 hours of stuff to do in a 24-hour day. This can really wear us down and negativity can spread like wildfire. Learn how to be part of the solution, not part of the problem by taking your communication skills to the next level. Get great techniques on how to deal with difficult people and discover how to raise your energy level in a snap. Christine will share her secret to getting what you want with what you’ve got, and she’ll show you that you have what it takes to make a difference in your workplace and life. Discover practical and creative strategies for having less stress and more fun.

Billy Riggs – Positively Magical Service In today’s competitive business market, successful businesses know that the most effective and least expensive way to distinguish their company from the competition is to provide mind-boggling customer service. In a dazzling combination of illusions and education, world-class magician Billy reveals the secrets of rendering Positively Magical Service. Discover how to keep customers coming back again and again and how to motivate underperforming employees.

Doug Lansky – What the Smartest Destinations Are Doing Right Travel writer and tourism advisor, Doug Lansky, teaches hotels, tour companies, attractions, destinations, and entire industries how to think about tourism and marketing in a new way. Regardless of the level of success you have achieved in the last 10 years, much of what brought you there is unlikely to carry you to the place you want to be 10 years from now. The landscape is shifting and evolving for DMOs, which means that all who play in this arena are going to need to be prepared for shift. With international tourism now topping one billion travelers and looking to double within 15 years, many attractions are full during peak season and need to figure out how to extend their season, not grow it. So, what is the role of the DMO?

Over 30 people attended My Biggest Break on November 18th to hear from John Iverson, Owner of Iverson’s and Steve VanGenderen & Josh Moody, co-owners of Dakota Physical Therapy and True Fitness. John shared his story and challenges he has had to overcome in the business. His take-away advice is to always be moving forward. He quoted from a mentor “If you’re not going forward, be leaning forward”. Josh and Steve shared the stage as they spoke about coming together in a partnership and learning how to manage a business together. Their view is that you may not see individual events as your “Biggest Break” but looking back, their biggest breaks were the opportunities that they capitalized on and took a risk on. Check back next year for more local business leaders sharing their inspiring stories!

Over 120 people gathered in person and more were gathered online at mitchellrepublic.com, on TV Mitchell Telecom’s Channel 90 or over the airwaves on KORN News Radio 1490 to hear arguments for and against the Pool Referendum vote to be held on December 8th. Panelists Blake Waddell, Nathan Weber, Steve Sibson and Ed Potzler shared their thoughts regarding the viability, benefits, and challenges that may come with the pool project. For more information you can visit www.cityofmitchell.com or you can find a link to the podcast of the Pool Forum discussion on www.1490korn.com homepage.

Governor’s Hospitality Certificate Program

Capitol Christmas Tree in Mitchell

Supervisors, nominate your employees for the Governor’s Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Hospitality and Customer Service. Certificates are awarded to employees who demonstrate excellent customer service above and beyond what is expected. A completed customer/visitor comment card or written letter must accompany the nomination form. Nominations are accepted throughout the calendar year. For more information, contact Eileen Bertsch at [email protected].

On Thursday, November 12th, the Capitol Christmas Tree rolled down Mitchell’s Main Street, stopping in front of the newly renovated Corn Palace. A journey made from the Chugach National Forest in Alaska – ending point, Washington, D.C. As community members signed the truck with permanent markers and grabbed a few photo ops, the traveling crew enjoyed visiting with guests and watching the new Palace murals being created before their eyes. While not officially on the schedule, the community of #MitchellSD was a gracious host as they passed through. Of course, goodie bags filled with information on Mitchell and fresh popcorn balls were given as they continued on their journey to the Nation’s Capitol. Weber.
