Speak tenderly to Jerusalem! Her guilt is expiated!” This Reading is immortalized in the first half of Handel’s English ‘oratorio’, the MESSIAH (1741). While in England, Handel collaborated with two men who influenced him profoundly: Charles Jennens, a composer/ librettist and Richard Bentley, a classical scholar and writer. While most operas drew on secular even sordid themes, Jennens and Bentley explored the Bible as a source for inspiring drama! The performance of ‘oratorios’ would eventually replace operas during Lent. The term ‘oratorio’ originated in the 16 th century in the informal meetings, the ‘spiritual exercises’, of the Congregation of the Oratory established in Rome by St. Philip Neri. The name derives from the prayer hall (the oratory) in which the meetings were held. St. Philip’s love of music attracted and fostered great talents, including the Italian layman, Palestrina and the Spaniard, Fr. Tomas Luis de Victoria. Unlike opera, the oratorio tells a sacred and noble story. It uses no scenery, costumes or action. The main characters sing the dialogue; the ‘aria’ and ‘recitative’ forms reveal their thoughts and move the action along. Following the Greek model, the chorus reflects on the unfolding plot and speaks for the audience. This Sunday the words SILENCE, WATCH, WAIT and YOUR FACE catch our attention. Choir will enter with WAITING IN SILENCE #41 expressing the longing of the First Reading. The Responsorial Psalm’s plaintive plea, “Shepherd of Israel…Show us YOUR FACE!” will encore in a different setting (#778) during Communion. Advent’s childlike anticipation manifests itself in the French carol, O COME, DIVINE MESSIAH (#50): “The world in SILENCE WAITS the day (when You) show YOUR FACE!” Mass will conclude with #54: WAKE, O WAKE, AND SLEEP NO LONGER.” Suggestion: spend some time this Advent prayerfully listening to Handel’s MESSIAH; you’ll better appreciate the “Hallelujah” Chorus!

NOTES FROM THE LOFT

The Music of Advent

Taken from Isaiah, the First Readings for today and next Sunday are a tender father/child dialogue which can best be appreciated by reading them back to back- rather than a week apart. Israel laments, “You, Lord are our Father… why did you let us wander from Your ways and harden our hearts? Return…come down…meet us…our guilt carries us away like the wind…You are our Father, the work of Your Hands!” God responds next Sunday, telling Isaiah: “Comfort My People! Speak tenderly to Jerusalem! Her guilt is expiated!”

This Reading is immortalized in the first half of Handel’s English ‘oratorio’, the MESSIAH (1741). While in England, Handel collaborated with two men who influenced him profoundly: Charles Jennens, a composer/ librettist and Richard Bentley, a classical scholar and writer. While most operas drew on secular – even sordid – themes, Jennens and Bentley explored the Bible as a source for inspiring drama! The performance of ‘oratorios’ would eventually replace operas during Lent.

The term ‘oratorio’ originated in the 16th century in the informal meetings, the ‘spiritual exercises’, of the Congregation of the Oratory established in Rome by St.

Advent’s childlike anticipation manifests itself in the French carol, O COME, DIVINE MESSIAH (#50): “The world in SILENCE WAITS the day (when You) show YOUR FACE!” Mass will conclude with #54: WAKE, O WAKE, AND SLEEP NO LONGER.”

Suggestion: spend some time this Advent prayerfully listening to Handel’s MESSIAH; you’ll better appreciate the “Hallelujah” Chorus!

NATIONAL NIGHT OF PRAYER FOR LIFE: December 8 – 9, from 9PM-12AM

Assumption Church will participate in the National Night of Prayer for Life from Saturday, December 8 beginning at 9:00PM until 12:00AM on Sunday, December 9. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for the duration. The purpose of the evening is to unite our prayers with Catholics throughout the country in an effort to turn hearts towards Christ. Praying for an end to abortion and the conversion and healing for all who have been involved in abortion; and to restore the respect for the sanctity of all human life from natural conception to natural death. The chosen hours coincide with Our Lady of Guadalupe’s first appearance to St. Juan Diego, whose feast day is December 9. Please come and join this night of prayer! Adore Jesus, receive his mercy in Confession, and pray the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet.

THE FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception celebrates our belief in the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Celebrated worldwide on December 8 and always observed as a Holy Day of Obligation. The United States bishops unanimously chose the Virgin Mary, conceived without sin, as patroness of the country, a decision approved by Pope Pius IX. Assumption will celebrate this Solemnity as follows:

Thursday, December 7, 2017 (Vigil Mass)

5:30pm (English Mass)

7:30pm (Spanish Mass)

Friday, December 8, 2017

EVERY MEMBER IS A MINISTER: THE GROUPS OF ASSUMPTION SERIES

Assumption is blessed by many groups, devotions and ministries. This week we focus on: THE ASSUMPTION GREETERS.

The blue sashed ladies of the Assumption Greeters are one of the youngest groups at Assumption. Last year we started at the 10AM and 12N Sunday masses. Our mission is simple and straight-forward: Welcome people as they walk through the doors of our beloved church. By smiling, talking, and holding doors, we hope that people feel connected and part of our Assumption family.

Greeters have been a part of some Protestant churches for some time and are a newer addition to Catholic churches. When we first started, we gathered information from those churches that had already started a greeting ministry to see what they do. Basically, it comes down to SMILE and be friendly.

Each of your greeters wants to make people feel welcome and part of the family. But as the saying goes “Give a little, Get a lot”, that absolutely describes how we feel each Sunday. Seeing familiar faces week after week, little young ones and big old ones, is an absolute delight. And as we get to know the families walking through the doors, it has broadened our own Assumption family. And we miss you when you are not there!

So next time you see a blue sashed lady, please introduce yourself so we get to know you as a fellow brother or sister of the wonderful family of Jesus Christ! AMEN.
