L et’s do something rather daring. Imagine, if you will, this day without carols, no child in the manger, no

Christmas trees, presents, or fine, big meal. How would you celebrate? For the first three hundred years after Jesus’ time Christian communities did little to mark the occasion of Jesus’ birth, although commemoration of Jesus’ death and resurrection were given great prominence. It was relatively easy to ascribe a date to Easter, because it happened at the time of the Jewish Passover. However, the scriptures are silent about the date of Jesus’ birth. After the Roman Empire stopped persecuting Christians, the church was free to add celebrations to its official calendar and finally settled on December 25 for Christmas. No one knows exactly why this date was chosen. Christmas became a more elaborate festival during the Middle Ages, but with the rise of Protestantism in England and Germany, the feast was suppressed. Puritans who came to America did not celebrate Christmas, calling it pagan and popish. Only in the nineteenth century, especially after Charles Dickens published his runaway best-seller A Christmas Carol, did people begin to observe Christmas again, but often more as a family festival than a religious event. In one of today’s readings, Saint Paul tells us what is at the heart of this day: “When the kindness and generous love of God our savior appeared, not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy, he saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he richly poured out on us through Jesus Christ our savior, so we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life” (Titus 3:4–7). Now that is really something to celebrate!

F or much of the year when we celebrate Eucha-rist, we use these words in the opening rite of Mass in the Gloria. They are words taken directly from Sacred Scripture, words from the heavenly hosts, who with the angels proclaim this truth at the birth of Jesus. The Incarnation of the Son of God is the

realization of the fullness of God’s revelation to all people. God chose to enter into our human experi-ence in order that we might enter into God’s divine love. The infant born into the world becomes our birth into the kingdom of grace. We can see signs of God’s power and majesty around us: the spectacular sunsets that we’ve recently had in San Clemente, the lunar eclipse reminding us of worlds beyond our own, the gift of all life. The birth of Jesus is about God’s glory shining in our mortal nature. The perfect love of the Father is reflected in the gift of his Son. The perfect love of Jesus is shown in his ministry of compassion and caring, and in his sacrifice to free us from our sins. The wisdom of their Holy Spirit allows us to understand and to proclaim the same words of the hosts and angels: Glory to God! It is Jesus the Christ who brings us peace. It is a peace that we are able to experience on “earth”, as well as a peace that we can anticipate to enjoy forever in heaven. This peace is experienced in the joy that we cele-brate with family and friends at this time of year, the faith we proclaim together as we worship today, and the Eucharist that nourishes us in our spiritual and earthly journey. Let us give glory to God, and know his peace in our lives!

Liturgy of the Word for Children— Resumes on January 8th This program takes place during the 9:00 Mass. Children 4 years (pre-k) through grade 4 are sent from the main assembly to a nearby space where they celebrate the Liturgy of the Word in a simplified, yet equivalent format. Children in grades 1-4 return at the offertory. Pre-k and kindergarteners re-main with their leaders until the end of Mass when they are picked up in the school kindergarten classroom by a parent. Pre-registration is NOT required to attend. This ministry currently has openings for leaders and teen assis-tants. Leaders must have a love of both the Liturgy and an understanding of effective communication with children and be willing to serve on a rotating basis every 4-6 weeks. Training is provided. Parish office hours The Parish and Diocesan offices will be closed on Monday, December 26th and Monday, January 2nd. Our parish office will be open Tuesday, December 27th thru Friday, Decem-ber 30th from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Sunday morning child care Our child care staff will be taking a well-deserved break on Christ-mas and New Year’s Day. Child care will resume at the 9 am Mass on January 8. Child care for children ages 12 months (or walking) up to 4 years is available. The child care room is open from 8:45 until 10:15 am while parents and older sibling attend the 9:00 am Mass. The room is staffed each week by two young adults and teen assistants from our parish and is funded through the parish offertory. There is no additional cost but occa-sional help with snacks or supplies is welcome. All parents will be asked to complete a registration form at their first visit. Space is limited in order to maintain a safe child/adult ratio. Families are accommodated on a first come basis. Parish Men’s Retreat — January 27-29, 2012 Our annual Men’s Retreat at The Passionist Retreat Cen-ter, Mater Dolorosa, in Sierra Madre will take place Janu-ary 27-29, 2012. Fatima to provide Income Tax Assistance – volunteers needed VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) offers free tax preparation assistance to low-to-moderate income households. Our parish is partnering with VITA to provide this important service. Similar to the program offered to seniors, VITA is avail-able to those in need regardless of age. Volunteers are needed now. D urante gran parte del año, cuando celebramos la Eucaristía, usamos estas palabras en el rito de apertura de la misa en la Gloria. Son palabras toma-das directamente de la Sagrada Escritura, las palabras de los anfitriones celestiales, que con esto los ángeles proclaman la verdad en el naci-

miento de Jesús. La Encarnación del Hijo de Dios es la realización de la plenitud de la revelación de Dios a to-das las personas. Dios quiso entrar en nuestra experien-cia humana con el fin de que podamos entrar en el amor divino de Dios. El bebé nacido en el mundo para que el nuestro renazca en el reino de la gracia. Podemos ver signos de poder y majestad de Dios a nuestro alrede-dor: las puestas de sol espectaculares que hemos tenido recientemente en San Clemente, el eclipse lunar que nos recuerda de los mundos más allá del nuestro, el don de la vida. El nacimiento de Jesús es la gloria de Dios que brilla en nuestra naturaleza mortal. El perfecto amor del Padre se refleja en el don de su Hijo. El perfecto amor de Jesús se muestra en su ministerio de compasión y cuidado, y en su sacrificio para librarnos de nuestros pecados. La sabiduría de su Espíritu Santo nos permite entender y proclamar a las mismas palabras de los anfitriones y de los ángeles: Gloria a Dios! Es Jesu-cristo, que nos trae la paz. Es una paz que somos capaces de experimentarla en la "tierra", así como una paz que podemos anticipar para disfrutar siempre en el cielo. Es-ta paz se vive en la alegría al celebrar con la familia y amigos en esta época del año, la fe que proclamamos juntos y que adoramos hoy, la Eucaristía que nos alimenta en nuestra jornada espiritual y terrenal. Vamos a dar gloria a Dios, y conozcamos su paz en nuestras vidas!

Carta de Navidad Querido Amigo: Hola, te amo mucho. Como sabrás, nos estamos acercando otra vez a la fecha en que festejan mi nacimiento. El año pasado hicieron una gran fiesta en mi honor y me da la impresión que este año ocurrirá lo mismo. A fin de cuentas ¡llevan meses haciendo compras para la ocasión y casi todos los días han sali-do anuncios y avisos sobre lo poco que falta para que llegue! La verdad es que se pasan de la raya, pero es agradable saber que por lo menos un día del año, piensan en mí. Ha transcurrido ya mucho tiempo cuando comprendían y agradecían de corazón lo mucho que hice por toda la humanidad. Pero hoy en día, da la impresión de que la mayoría de la gente apenas si sabe por qué motivo se celebra mi cumpleaños. Por otra parte, me gusta que la gente se reúna y lo pase bien y me alegra sobre todo que los niños se diviertan tanto; pero aún así, creo que la mayor parte no sabe bien de qué se trata. ¿No te parece? Como lo que suce-dió, por ejemplo, el año pasado: al llegar el día de mi cumplea-ños, hicieron una gran fiesta, pero ¿Puedes creer que ni siquiera me invitaron? ¡Imagínate! ¡Yo era el invitado de honor! ¡Pues se olvidaron por completo de mí!. Resulta que habían estado preparándose para las fiestas durante dos meses y cuando llegó el gran día me dejaron al margen. Ya me ha pasado tantísimas veces que lo cierto es que no me sorprendió. Aunque no me invitaron, se me ocurrió colarme sin hacer ruido. Entré y me quedé en mi rincón. ¿Te imaginas que nadie advirtió siquiera mi presencia, ni se dieron cuenta de que yo estaba allí? Estaban todos bebiendo, riendo y pasándolo en grande, cuando de pronto se presentó un hombre gordo vestido de rojo y barba blanca postiza, gritando: "¡jo, jo, jo!". Parecía que había bebido más de la cuenta, pero se las arregló para avanzar a tropezones entre los presentes, mientras todos los felicitaban. Cuando se sentó en un gran sillón, todos los niños, emocionadísimos, se le acercaron corriendo y diciendo: ¡Santa Clos! ¡Cómo si él hubiese sido el homenajeado y toda la fiesta fuera en su honor! Aguanté aquella "fiesta" hasta donde pude, pero al final tuve que irme. Caminando por la calle me sentí solitario y triste. Lo que más me asombra de cómo celebra la mayoría de la gente el día de mi cumpleaños es que en vez de

hacer regalos a mí, ¡se obsequian cosas unos a otros! y para colmo, ¡casi siempre son objetos que ni siquiera les hacen falta! Te voy a hacer una pregunta: ¿A tí no te parecería extraño que al llegar tu cumpleaños todos tus amigos decidieron celebrarlo haciéndose regalos unos a otros y no te dieran nada a tí? ¡Pues es lo que me pasa a mí cada año! Una vez alguien me dijo: "Es que tú no eres como los demás, a ti no se te ve nunca; ¿Cómo es que te vamos a hacer regalos?" Ya te imaginarás lo que le res-pondí. Yo siempre he dicho "Pues regala comida y ropa a los pobres, ayuda a quienes lo necesiten. Ve a visitar a los huérfa-nos, enfermos y a los que estén en prisión!". Le dije: "Escucha bien, todo lo que regales a tus semejantes para aliviar su necesi-dad, ¡Lo contaré como si me lo hubieras dado a mí personal-mente!" (Mateo 25,34-40). Muchas personas en esta época en vez de pensar en regalar, hacen bazares o ventas de garaje, don-de venden hasta lo que ni te imaginas con el fin de recaudar hasta el último centavo para sus nuevas compras de Navidad. Y pensar todo el bien y felicidad que podrían llevar a las colonias marginadas, a los orfanatorios, asilos, penales o familiares de los presos. Lamentablemente, cada año que pasa es peor. Llega mi cum-pleaños y sólo piensan en las compras, en las fiestas y en las vacaciones y yo no pinto para nada en todo esto. Además cada año los regalos de Navidad, pinos y adornos son más sofistica-dos y más caros, se gastan verdaderas fortunas tratando con esto de impresionar a sus amistades. Esto sucede inclusive en los templos. Y pensar que yo nací en un pesebre, rodeado de ani-males porque no había más. Me agradaría muchísimo más nacer todos los días en el corazón de mis amigos y que me permitie-ran morar ahí para ayudarles cada día en todas sus dificultades, para que puedan palpar el gran amor que siento por todos; por-que no sé si lo sepas, pero hace 2 mil años entregué mi vida para salvarte de la muerte y mostrarte el gran amor que te tengo. Por eso lo que pido es que me dejes entrar en tu corazón. Llevo años tratando de entrar, pero hasta hoy no me has dejado. "Mira yo estoy llamando a la puerta, si alguien oye mi voz y abre la puerta, entraré en su casa y cenaremos juntos". Confía en mí, abandónate en mí. Este será el mejor regalo que me puedas dar. Gracias.

H agamos algo bastante atrevido. Imaginémonos este día sin villancicos, sin el Niño en el pesebre, sin árboles de

Navidad, sin regalos ni comida de Noche Buena. ¿Cómo celebrarías tú? En los primeros trescientos años después de la época de Jesús, las comunidades cristianas no hacían casi nada para recordar el nacimiento de Jesús, aunque sí le daban prominencia a la conmemoración de su muerte y resurrección. Asignarle una fecha a la Pascua era relativamente fácil ya que sucedió durante la Pascua judía. Sin embargo, las Escrituras guardan silencio de la fecha del nacimiento de Jesús. Después que el imperio romano dejó de perseguir a los cristianos la Iglesia tuvo la libertad de celebrar las fiestas oficiales de su calendario y finalmente decidió la fecha del 25 de diciembre para celebrar la Navidad. Nadie puede precisar con exactitud por qué se escogió tal fecha. La Navidad comenzó a ser una fiesta más elaborada durante la Edad Media, pero con el surgimiento del protestantismo en Inglaterra y Alemania, la fiesta fue suprimida. Los puritanos que llegaron a América no celebraban la Navidad, pues decían que era algo pagano y papista. Sólo en el siglo diecinueve, sobre todo después de que Charles Dickens publicó su libro A Christmas Carol (Un cuento de Navidad, 1843) que llegó rápidamente a ser un éxito editorial, fue que se empezó a celebrar de nuevo la Navidad en los Estados Unidos; sin embargo, era más un acontecimiento familiar que religioso. En una de las lecturas de hoy san Pablo nos habla del punto principal de este día: “Al manifestarse la bondad de Dios, nuestro Salvador, y su amor a los hombres, él nos salvó, no porque nosotros hubiéramos hecho algo digno de merecerlo, sino por su misericordia. Lo hizo mediante el bautismo, que nos regenera y nos renueva, por la acción del Espíritu Santo, a quien Dios derramó abundantemente sobre nosotros, por Cristo, nuestro Salvador. Así, justificados por su gracia, nos convertiremos en herederos, cuando se realice la esperanza de la vida eterna” (Tito 3:4–7). ¡Eso sí que es algo digno de celebrarse!
