Transhumanist …

The latest incarnation of man’s rebellion against God is the trans humanist movement. Many within the

movement believe the singularity will lead to the emergence of “post-biological humans” who are able to shed

their biological bodies and “upgrade their hardware.” Others believe that by downloading themselves into a

network, they will effectively become “immortal.” True believers have modified their diets, exercise regimens, and

entire lifestyle in an effort to increase the likelihood of living to witness human reversal of the aging process and

eventual human “immortality.”

Ray Kurzweil – inventor, author, and transhumanist – is considered one of the best in the world at accurately

forecasting short-term and intermediate technological trends. In Chapter 7 of his bestselling book “The

Singularity is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology,” he describes his view of the ultimate outcome of our

technological advance:

“The matter and energy in our vicinity will become infused with the intelligence, knowledge, creativity, beauty,

and emotional intelligence (the ability to love, for example) of our human-machine civilization. Our civilization

will then expand outward, turning all the dumb matter and energy we encounter into sublimely intelligent –

transcendent – matter and energy. So in a sense, we can say the Singularity will ultimately infuse the universe

with spirit.”

According to Kurzweil, the universe will be infused with “spirit” as a result of the natural advance of our human-

machine civilization. This infers that the universe is not already infused with “spirit,” and that if God exists, His

designs are inferior to those that will be created by the predicted human-machine civilization. Transhumanism

Imagine a world with no disease, no ageing, no pain – a world where you might even live forever. That is the

vision of transhumanism, a relatively new movement inspired by the belief that science can be harnessed to alter

the human condition and allow us to transcend our biological limits.

Advances in medicine and bioengineering, argue the transhumanists, will be able to do more than assist patients

to function normally. Some may have the potential to catapult us into a new kind of being.

Though the term was coined by biologist Julian Huxley back in the late 50s, transhumanism as an organised

movement is just a quarter-century old, conceived by a group of Californian academics, inventors, entrepreneurs

and artists committed to the idea of engineering an improved human race. In opposition to those who are

cautious about the rapid advance in science, fearing unforeseen consequences of unfettered innovation, they are

all in favour of effecting radical changes in humankind, or, in the words of the WTA, the World Transhumanist

Association, “redesigning the human condition”.

The WTA, founded less than a decade ago, is led from the UK and US, with strong affiliations in Canada,

continental Europe, Latin America and Asia. There is even a Mormon Transhumanist Association whose

members believe that transhumanism provides the means of realising “diverse prophetic visions of

transfiguration, immortality, resurrection, renewal of this world, and the discovery and creation of worlds

without end”.

Transhumanists are not the only ones to speculate along these lines. Four years ago, for instance, the US

National Science Foundation (NSF) issued a thick report, ‘Converging Technologies for Improving Human

Performance’, proposing vigorous application of nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology and

cognitive science to enhance individual sensory and cognitive capabilities, revolutionise healthcare and disabled

people’s lives, improve individual and group creativity, perfect human-machine interfaces, provide for brain-to-

brain communication, and ameliorate “the physical and cognitive decline that is common to the aging mind”.

The report also explored the new technology’s potential to “improve work and learning efficiency” and “enhance

human capabilities for defense purposes”. But while this NSF report focused on the practicalities of achieving the

best results, transhumanism is devoted to the more evangelical task of convincing people of the benefits of

pursuing such results. Their method is more often to assert than to argue.

The Transhumanist Declaration, produced by the WTA in 2002, for example, asserts that we are on the brink of

radical change of human life through technology, and forecasts “changes in the inevitability of aging, limitations

on human and artificial intellects, unchosen psychology, suffering, and our confinement to the planet earth”.

Consider these facts from a U.S. News & World Report poll in 1997: • Sixty-six percent of Americans,

including a third of those who admit they never attend church, say they believe Jesus Christ will

return to earth someday. This is an increase from 61 percent in 1994. • Nearly six in ten Americans

believe that the world will end or be destroyed, and a third of those think it will happen within the next

few years or decades. • Forty-four percent believe the world will face the apocalypse with true believers

being whisked away to heaven. • Forty-nine percent believe there will be an Antichrist. In a more

recent survey, 20 percent of Americans said they believe the Second Coming will occur sometime

around the year 2000 (Dallas Morning News, 10/24/98, p. 24A). However, while the majority of people

believe in the second coming of Christ, the apocalypse, the Antichrist, and the end of the world, Bible

prophecy remains a confusing, frustrating, even bewildering morass of differing views, strange

symbols, confusing charts, and bizarre visions. For far too many people, Bible prophecy remains

shrouded in mystery and irrelevance.

The Idol of Energy (Atoms in Space and Time)

With the mushroom cloud has come not only a concern about the future of humanity, but also a preoccupation with energy.

People in a desperate quest for lasting meaning think that their ultimate concern has to do with the finite energy of the

universe. Then, with energy as their ultimate object of trust, they attribute divine qualities to it. The energy of the cosmos,

rather than God, has come to be regarded as self-existent. From early ideas that energy was “a force,” scientists began to

think of it rather as “capability to do work.” Then science discovered the interconvertibility of energy with matter (E = MC2)

and the conservation of the sum total. From this, the philosopher of science M. Jammer leaps to belief in “the emancipation of

energy as an autonomous existent.” In place of an autonomous God, Jammer worships and serves “autonomous energy.”

Following Ostwald, not only has energy become the universal currency of physics, but “all the phenomena of nature were

merely manifestations of energy and its manifold transformations.” Energy, Jammer maintains, is substance, and “the only

substance.”62 This “dissolution of matter” into energy was welcomed by monistic thinkers because it suggested a unified

conception of the universe with energy as the ubiquitous god. New Consciousness and New Age thinkers with Paul Davies in

God and the New Physics claim that the end result of the new physics is “more like mysticism than materialism.”63 Davies

remarks about the “strong holistic flavour to the quantum aspects of the nature of matter” with “everything somehow made

up of everything else and yet displaying a hierarchy of structure.”64 “The Force” is not just for children at the movies. Forms

of monism, pantheism, or panentheism underlie many new religious trends in human potential, new consciousness, altered

states of consciousness, and the occult. If the inner energy of all humans is divine, then all have infinite potential and anyone

may evolve to the next stage in cultural or religious evolution (often imagined to be like an avatar or god). All people are

thought to be “spiritually” connected by this energy. Illness is considered an imbalance of energy, a by-product of an

unenlightened consciousness. If you will only “eat” of this theory, as the Deceiver said to Eve and Adam, “you will be like God”

(Gen. 3:4). Valuable as modern physical discoveries have been, the energy of the universe is not the unlimited, personal God of

the Bible: (1) Energy loses its usefulness, God does not. (2) The energy of the universe had a beginning and will have an end;

God does not. (3) The energy of the universe is impersonal; God is personal. (4) The energy of the universe is amoral; God is

moral. (5) The energy of the universe can be manipulated by human engineering; God will not be manipulated by physicists or

mediums. God alone sovereignly rules over all the finite energy in the cosmos. The cosmos is not “all that ever was or ever will

be.” Sagan exclaims, “Passage from the Chaos of the Big Bang to the Cosmos that we are beginning to know is the most

awesome transformation of matter and energy that we have been privileged to glimpse.”65 But that awesome transformation
