A HAPPY HEARTH for the Holidays!By Allison
Parker.A crisp, crackling sound of a blueish orange-tinged flame drifts from behind a wrought iron fireplace gate – a warm welcome to the holiday season. The living room hearth is a prime gathering spot in the month of December. With holiday activities abun-dant, it is a pivotal spot to relax, recoup, catch up with family and even wrap holiday gifts as the kids or loveys sleep tucked away.
A unique way to jazz up your mantle is to create a beautiful decorative garland. Away with the fall colors of orange, burgundy and the faded green of leaves shed from the trees. In comes red, bright green, gold, silver, even an icy blue to remind us of cooler temperatures and the need to cuddle up in the warmth of our homes.
A unique and festive garland is one comprised of col-orful and brightly speckled holiday socks. Our family has a tradition of including a fun holiday activity in each of the 31 socks used in the garland. Each day of the month holds one fun activity to celebrate the season with loved ones or to enjoy on one’s own.
To start, gather up 16 pairs of socks with peppy winter emblems such as snowman, holiday lights, trees, winter sports, etc. The local dollar store usually has plenty on its shelves and makes it an inexpensive way to start the project. Grab some twine, clothespins, thumbtacks or Command strips (your choice totally), and index cards while you’re there and you’re ready to create a fun and interactive family decoration.
Next, write an activity to place in each sock that represents one of the 31 days of December. Examples of fun things to try: decorate ornaments from scratch, write a holiday note, bake cookies for a neighbor, call an out of state relative, sing carols to your friends, donate time to a community char-ity, gather items to help a local food pantry, or plan a potluck dinner (small groups only this year due to COVID-19). Basically, have a good time with this and go with whatever your heart leads you to write!
To complete, use the clothespins to hang each sock with an activity card inside on the twine and adhere the twine, however you choose, to drape slightly below your mantle. As you complete the day’s activities, you can fold in half and clip up the sock or leave hanging with index card activity on the front to show completed.
It’s fun to pick a special time of day to enjoy the activity. Add, delete, or change it up as much as you like. From my home to yours, it is now your special tradition to ring in the winter holidays and spread fellowship within your family and beyond to the community.

Ann Del Vecchio and Maria Fenwick are among several neighbors who are “waste warriors.” Ann shares her reasons for this passion. “Over the years, I have encountered oil on my toes while walking a beach, plastics galore on river banks, overflowing garbage cans in parks and recycling bins in our neighborhood with the dreaded white plastic bags of ‘recyclables’.”
“It is all out of control, and I know I can make a difference. Together, we can make a bigger difference. I now have cloth bags in my car and in all of my purses. I return the rare plastic bag to the Publix bin, and if we buy a styrofoam egg carton instead of cardboard, it too is taken to the Publix bin. I never take a straw with my restaurant drinks; I never take a plastic to-go cup. I no longer take all those freebie paper giveaways. I have reusable food storage containers. Most importantly, I am working very hard to just not buy things. I am getting better and better at find-ing interesting thrift stores. Pre-loved is best.”
Ann has reached out to our county resources and private vendors to learn more about what actions we all can take to reduce what goes into the waste stream. The three Rs have evolved to seven: rethink, refuse, reduce, rot, reuse, repurpose, recycle right. The focus is shifting to thinking before we consume items that may become waste. Within the scope of recycling all the consumer packaging in our shopping carts, there are five suggested actions:
• Reduce the amount of packaging you buy and throw away.• Reuse packaging.• Recycle packaging whenever possible.• Reject packaging that’s unsatisfactory.• Respond to producers and retailers to let them know their
packaging is unsatisfactory.
In addition to promoting the benefits of “recycling right,” Ann and a few other neighbors have pursued composting by using a local subscription service, Crown Town Compost. They collect food waste during the week, which is picked up weekly and converted to soil.
Wishful recycling (placing items in recycling that is actually garbage) costs Mecklenburg County over $1.6M per year. Those costs arise from the special process-ing cost that the county pays to separate the unacceptable materials out of the recycling stream and then the cost to transport and dump the ill-placed objects (trash) into the landfill. Unfortunately, wishful recycling is
growing each year, and more contaminants are entering our local recycling stream. Every household in Mecklenburg County is encouraged to be familiar with their guidelines, available at www.wipeoutwaste.com to ensure only the correct items are placed in curbside recycling bins.
Rather than feeling guilty that we are putting items in the recy-cling stream that will be removed by human labor and filtering equipment, we can educate our-selves on the Mecklenburg County website. “When in doubt, throw it out” seems counter-intuitive but will reduce the cost of “re-work” in our recycling centers.
In closing, Maria shares these words of wisdom:
Why I recycleIt is the responsible, economical, kind thing to do,For me, my neighbors, my fellow man, and for the world. Why wouldn’t I recycle? It’s the right thing to do.

Blake Violette is one of Ballantyne Country Club’s Sensational Seniors, Class of 2021. Blake shares his background and love of golf.
How long have you and your family lived in BCC? My family has lived in Ballantyne Country Club since before I was born. I am honored to be one of the kids who has spent my entire life in BCC.
Which sport do you play? I am a four-year varsity letterman on the golf team at Charlotte Christian School. I received the Most Valuable Player Award during my sophomore year of high school. I have also played for Ballantyne Country Club’s Interclub team since sixth grade, played for Community House Middle School, and have played in numerous tournaments for the Carolinas Golf Association, American Junior Golf Association, and Tarheel Youth Golf Association.
What is your favorite part of the sport you play? My favorite parts about playing golf are the competitive aspects and the ability to meet a lot of people through playing. Golf is really unlike any other sport in that you get to know your opponent and can build lasting relationships with the people you compete against.
athletic efforts and focus on growing my golf game. I benefitted immensely from this decision and saw my handicap drop by six-and-a-half shots in one sum-mer. Playing sports has taught me to keep a positive outlook not only on the course but in life. When I’m not at the course, I’m often at the BCC basketball court with my neighborhood friends. I have had a love of sports since I was young, and I enjoy attend-ing various pro and college-level sporting events. Lastly, I enjoy traveling with my family to the beach (Kiawah is my favorite) and to Lake Tillery.
Do you have a memorable moment that sticks out in your mind when you think about your sport? Ever since I can remember, I have played the game of golf. My dad put a golf club in my hands at the young age of 2 and used to take me with him to the range at Ballantyne Country Club every time he could. With his instillment of the game in me and his guidance, I fell in love with the sport. I began playing competitively in Interclub matches in middle school at Ballantyne Country Club and then expanded into big-ger tournaments after this. I have made many friend-ships at the club thanks to spending countless hours at the range. I am grateful to have so many men and women to look up to at the club, and I consider Randy Joyner and Matt Saggio two of my greatest mentors. The golf pros and staff at the club are a second family to me. In August of 2020, I played for the first time in the men’s club championship at Ballantyne Country Club. I shot a 69 on the third day of the tournament and won first place gross.
Anything about yourself you would like read-ers to know? I’m a well-rounded student-athlete who enjoys giving back to the community. Outside of the classroom, I am a volunteer with Samaritan’s Feet, a charity that gives shoes to the underprivi-leged and provides words of hope. I also volunteer with The First Tee, where I teach Charlotte youth the game of golf. In addition, I work as a referee and a coach for Yes, I Can Basketball, which gives me the ability to inspire youth boys and girls to be their best selves; I started playing in the Yes, I Can league at age 9, and I have been excited to work for the league since I turned 16. Finally, I have been involved with the CCS Honors Choir for three years and have recently been inducted into the Tri-M Music National Honor Society. I am a versatile student who takes a lot of pride in being a strong leader at my school and in my community.
Future plans? I plan to continue to develop my golf skills in college. I cannot wait to see what the next chapter of my life holds!
What is the biggest challenge you face? The biggest challenge I face is knowing when and when not to take risks. Golf is a lot like life in that way, because so much of what happens in life is a result of the choices you make. In golf, you have to make calculated decisions and only have about 40 seconds to decide on a strategy and shot. Improving my mental game and decision-making have been my greatest areas of improvement this year. Strong decision making can make 90s into 80s, 80s into 75s, etc. I continually work on improving my mental game.
If you could give advice to younger athletes, what would it be? Never give up! I took the game of golf seriously during my freshman year and cut almost 20 shots off of my scoring average in three years. I went from the number five spot in my team’s line to the number one spot as a result of hard work and dedication. If you really want something bad enough, keep your head up and never stop working. Every trial and tribulation put you closer to breaking through and winning. If you stick with it and maintain a positive attitude, you will go a long way.
What other activities do you do in your spare time? I played multiple sports throughout my freshman year of high school, including baseball, basket-ball, and football. However, after my freshman year, I decided to put all of my

We arrived in Charlotte, from Switzerland, eight-and-a-half years ago. At that time, our children, Lilia (now 11) and Xavier (now 9), were babies!
Both my husband, Scott, and I are British. We were born in the UK and have lived there for half of our lives. We have both traveled exten-sively around Europe. My love of travel took me to work on a beau-tiful Greek island, and from there, my husband’s job took us to South Africa. My background is in the food industry and my degree, food marketing management, combines my two favorite things: food and marketing! I have mostly worked in the food industry throughout my career. After two years in Durban, South Africa, my husband’s job moved us to Basel, Switzerland. It was there that our two children were born. The four years in Switzerland before the children were born were a blur of skiing and travel! I had an amazing job, developing airline food
If you have a special neighbor-to-neighbor story to share, please reach out to Allison Parker at [email protected].
for Swiss International Airlines, and was fortunate to be able to travel the world with my job. It was during this time that I first traveled to America. I had a two-day layover in Long Beach, Los Angeles. Having never been to the USA, I had no idea what to expect. But as soon as the plane touched down and I headed to an outdoor bar for a Blue Moon with the rest of the flight crew, I fell in love with the place!
I have been fortunate to be able to stay at home while my children were young and be involved in “their world” for the last 11 years! It’s been a busy time! I love to write, and I have been writing the resident reci-pes for the BCC magazine for the last six years. I’m also very involved with the kids’ school. I’m a board member of the PTA and arrange the school’s food fundraisers and spirit night events. This school year has been more important than ever to raise money for the school PTA, so that has been a challenge!
This year has been a challenge in so many ways for everyone, and it was this which gave me the idea of starting my next venture and my own business, Grassy Signs Charlotte. It was Xavier’s ninth birthday in August and of course, we couldn’t do a party for him. It was then, I came up with the idea of sur-prising him with some birthday yard signs. My husband is amazing with art, so we made our own signs for Xavier’s birthday. And that’s how it began! Since then, we’ve made more signs for our friends’ children’s birthdays, and it has grown from there. I now have Facebook and Instagram pages, as well as a website, and am getting requests for adult birthdays. Recently, we made a champagne bottle sign for a 40th birthday. We have also branched out from birthdays to births, with birth carriages for parents to celebrate their newborns! We are continuing to grow and now have many signs that can be rented. We love to help celebrate birthdays or special occasions with our surprise pop-up lawn celebrations!
During the fall, a few friends asked if I could make them person-alized pumpkin signs, which they could buy to display on their porches or yards. This is another part of the business which has started to develop, with seasonal and special occasion yard signs to buy instead of the rentable celebration signs.
The centerpiece of my business and the thing I am most proud of is the personalized cupcake. It took me a long time to develop a cupcake I was happy with and which I felt was unique and a good representation of the business.
All of our signs are handmade, cut, and handcrafted from scratch, using good quality sustainable wood. They are designed by myself and then hand-painted by either me or my husband. Our daughter even designed her own LOL Doll sign for her birthday! And our son helps with sanding down the wood. He is also my little side-kick when delivering and setting up the signs in the yards!
Our family is happy and proud to be building a small family run business. We are excited about the future of Grassy Signs Charlotte! To see more of our Grassy Signs, visit our website at www.grassysignscharlotte.com. You can also follow us on Instagram, @grassysignscharlotte, and Facebook, Grassy Signs Charlotte.

Deacon and Teddy Parrish are two cool pets. They are members of the Parrish family, which includes Felton, Andi, Lauren, and Carter Parrish.
Deacon is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Teddy is a mixed breed rescue dog. The family adopted him from South Charlotte Dog Rescue (“SCDR”) and it was thought that he was part-hound and part-lab. A few people have asked the Parrish family if he is part Rhodesian Ridgeback. They think he is ‘mostly a super mutt.’
Deacon is three and a half years old and the bigger but younger Teddy is about a year old. The family adopted Teddy on April 3, 2020. Deacon was from a breeder, Smoky Mount Cavaliers, in the mountains of North Carolina.
Mrs. Parrish recalls how they decided to get Teddy. “Deacon is very friendly. He loves other dogs and people. Once the world shut down due to COVID and we were home all the time, we decided to adopt Teddy
from a local rescue group so that Deacon could have a friend. We thought it would be a good time train a puppy since we were all at home every day.”
When asked if there was a story behind the dogs’ names, Mrs. Parrish shared: “We named Deacon because Felton went to Wake Forest for college, and their mascot is the Demon Deacon. SCDR, the group that we adopted Teddy from, found him and his littermates in a ditch in February 2020. SCDR originally named Teddy “Harry” and they named his littermates “Meghan” and “William” after the British royal family. We decided not to call Teddy “Harry” since he really was not very hairy. We picked the name Teddy because it was fun to say and Theodore Roosevelt was an American President famous for outdoor conservation work and our Teddy was found outdoors during a time when we were spending all of our time outdoors.”
When asked what they love the best about having the precious pets, the family noted, “Deacon is very soft and cuddly and loves to be with people. Teddy has these expressive eyes, a big head, and some wrinkles around his face. We jokingly call him ‘Big Head Ted.’ He is smart and we love how easily he can pick up on some of the training commands that we are working with him on.”
Felton recollected a funny story with Teddy and a chicken wing. “When we first got Teddy, we made chicken wings for dinner one night. When our backs were turned, Teddy stopped by the dining room table and took a piece of chicken right off Andi’s dinner plate. We yelled at Teddy to “drop it,” but he just ran the other way and swallowed the chicken wing whole. At the time, we were really mad at Teddy and worried about him eating the wing whole, but in hindsight, it was quite funny. We have been working hard to train Teddy not to jump up and take things, but we have also gotten pretty good at never leaving food unattended around Teddy!”
Deacon and Teddy are super awesome pets. Thank you to the Parrish family for sharing then with us!

Eric and I loved the idea of a trip to the Northern Italy Lake District and Switzerland. It combined all of the things we love to do when we travel – visit amazing cities with great history and architecture, hike in natural set-tings, and of course, the opportunity to sample the local culture and cuisine.
Our trip started in Milan where we toured Leonardo da Vinci’s fresco, The Last Supper. The story of how the fresco survived continuous bombings during WWII is almost as interesting as the fresco. The next stop was Milano’s Duomo, where the most memorable part of our tour was the rooftop with its amazing architec-ture and view of the Alps. The next day, we drove along Lake Como to Bellagio, where we had our favorite dinner on our 12-day trip, at Mistral Restaurant with its incredible views of Lake Como and the Alps along with remarkable service and food.
One of the best ways to experience the lakes is via the extensive passenger

and auto ferries that give you a chance to see the sites from the water while also cutting down on travel times. We took the ferry to Varenna with its lakeside promenade, which connects the harbor to the old town and gardens tours. You also get spectacular views of Lake Como, Bellagio, and Menaggio during the ferry ride. However, our favorite place on Lake Como was Villa del Balbianello, which was originally a church but last owned by explorer Guido Monzino, whose villa is exqui-site and included numerous notewor-thy collections. The terraced garden and elegant loggia fit in with the villa’s architecture and views. The gardens were used in numerous movies includ-ing Star Wars and James Bond.
Next, we went to Lake Maggiore, which is ringed by the Italian Alps. We stayed in Stresa, which is very close to several islands that have unique homes of historic significance. We had drinks at the Hotel La Palma Sky Bar, which offers great views of the town and the lake. The next day,
we toured the Borromeon Islands by passenger ferry. Our favorite islands were Isola Bella, with a baroque palace, and Isola Madre, which has a 16th-century villa and a must-see English-style garden.
Next on our itinerary was our dream to do some hiking in the Swiss Alps! We drove to Grindelwald, near Interlaken. The challenge in hiking the Swiss Alps is the substantial elevation change from the base of the mountains to the top. To make the hiking more enjoy-able, there are cog trains and trams to get into different areas and eleva-tions of Berner Oberland to hike. Our favorite hike was from Wengernalp
to Kleine Scheidegg, which brought us close up to Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau and some rather large cows with their bells ring-ing. Our most memorable tram ride was from Murren to Birg to Schilthorn. Murren and Kleine Scheidegg are recommended places to linger for a meal or drink because of their cozy restau-rants and breathtaking views.
Although we did a fair bit of driving during our trip, being able to see the sights at our pace makes for a fun way to take a break when you are ready for one. This was a fun trip for us that we hope others might enjoy, as well.
