EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR UPDATE:

I hope that everyone had a blessed Thanksgiving! Winter has announced its arrival a little early this year. Please be careful driving and walking in the slippery conditions; better to take a couple extra minutes than to get hurt or hurt someone else!

I am very happy to be back to work! With a little convincing, the surgeon released me to return to work as long as I agreed to not push myself too hard and to go home to rest if/when I get tired. So, I’ll be working a slightly reduced schedule for a while but hopefully will be back to full strength soon. Honestly, I feel pretty good and it’s good to be back in the swing of all that’s going on here! I’ll be starting a new round of Chemotherapy on Friday. It’s a once a week infusion for 2 out of every 3 weeks. I’m told that there are fewer side effects from this drug than the Chemo that I had last Fall, so I’m assuming that I’ll be able to continue to work as usual other than the time of the actual treatments. A huge THANK YOU goes out to the Director’s team for “holding down the fort” in my absence last month!

The Salvation Army bell ringing campaign is in full swing. In Orleans County, the funds raised play a huge role in us being able to meet client needs. I ask that staff consider helping out by signing up for a time slot of bell ringing at Wal-Mart in Albion. Unfortunate-ly, bell ringers must stand outside to ring the bell (WalMart policy), therefore it’s more difficult to get volunteers. If you are able to ring, plan for the weather conditions! Tops in Medina is also an option. As an agency, we will again this year allow staff up to 4 hours of paid time to ring bells during work time as long as it’s approved by your supervisor and director and can be scheduled within your normal scheduled hours with minimal disruption to agency operations/services. Please contact Annette Finch for further information. Thank you to all who have already committed to volunteering!

Save the date: We have tentatively set March 20, 2020 as the date for our Spring In-Service. Please keep the date open on your calendars.

I wish everyone a very healthy and happy holiday season!

News from Bonnie:

At this time of year when people are especially busy and stress can be higher than usual, remember to slow down, breathe deeply, give thanks for the blessings you have, and be assured that through your work at Community Action you help provide both hope and peace to others!

The Head Start Leadership Team attended a training at GCC with Sara Vacin, Inclusion and Diversity Specialist, to gain increased awareness on becoming more culturally competent and sensitive.

Sara Vacin, Nicole Struble, Christy Robertson, Pam Wadhams, Jackie DeMarco, Bonnie Malakie, Deb Renner

Nicole, Christy, Pam, Jackie, and Bonnie Deb, Shelcy Plueckhahn, Laura Grose, and Freddie Stewart

5 representatives from Leadership Orleans learned about Head Start from Laura Grose on November 14th. Here they are ready to enter one of the classrooms at the Medina site.

They were amazed at everything we do in the program!!

Head Start children learning about healthy foods as part of the

“Eat Well, Play Hard” curriculum designed to promote healthy

eating as well as being physically active.

News from Carly:

If you haven’t noticed, we have rolled out our new website! We are looking for some new pictures to add to it. Please email them to me when you get a chance. We would also like to simplify the text on each department page. If each department could take some time to pare down the narratives, that would be great. Our goal is to have a simpler, cleaner website!

Check out this Weatherization Infographic!

Mary Yockel was asked to say a few words at the annual United Way dinner on how the Employment Program at the Main Street Store helped her secure a job. She did a wonderful job on describing the program and the benefits, this program is funded by United Way. Pictured with Mary above is Dean Bellack, Executive Director of Orleans County United Way .

Michelle Figueroa is pictured above with some of the toys

donated from Gary the Happy Pirate Toy Fund. These toys

(approximately 1,250 items!) will be given away to children as

part of the Holiday Basket program. Many thanks to the Toy

Fund for their generous donations again this holiday season!
