Memory CornerDementia and the Holidays: Tips for Caregivers

By Ava M. Stinnett

For some, the holidays are a favorite time of the year. The days are about experiences andpeople, family traditions, recalling old memories and creating new ones, and tuning into what-ever you feel like doing at the moment. For caregivers and people living with dementia-relatedconditions such as Alzheimer’s, however, there will come a time when it’s just not feasible orpractical to do everything you once did. How do we celebrate special occasions when one ofthe people involved doesn’t remember or even understand what the celebration is about? Howdo caregivers on the dementia journey with a loved one—not just on the holidays, but all dayevery day—manage to keep it together?

The holiday season can be stressful, so it's critical to adjust your expectations. Caregiver ex-pert Amy Goyer describes caregiver burnout, saying, “The prolonged stress builds up, we arerobbed of energy, and sometimes we reach a point of total emotional, mental, and physical ex-haustion. We may lose motivation completely or feel we just don’t care about our loved ones, our other relationships, or our work. We may feel that we’ve lost ourselves in the vastness ofcaregiving and that nothing we can do will make a difference. If you feel like this most of thetime, you may have reached burnout” (Goyer, 2015). The following tips may help caregiversweather the holiday season.

· Although it may be challenging, try to maintain a similar routine for your loved one andyourself so that holiday preparations don’t become disruptive. Changes to the dailyschedule can increase disorientation and anxiety for those with cognitive impairment.

· Trust your instincts. Keeping past traditions alive, such as eating favorite holiday foods, visiting with family and good friends, or looking at family photo albums and heirlooms—activities that take advantage of long-term memory—can help an elder connect to holi-day celebrations. However, you recognize more than anyone else how much you andyour loved one can handle without feeling overwhelmed. Feel free to reschedule or de-cline invitations when needed.

· Prioritize self-care and don’t be afraid to share your wish list. Whether it’s having abreak to go to a movie, take a walk, or meet a friend for lunch, or having someone cooka meal or help clean the house—having even a short time off can provide a change inperspective and allow you to recharge your batteries.

Be aware that the holidays may evoke memories of better times—not just for your loved one forbut for you as a caregiver. Talking with a close friend or a counselor often helps one managethe emotions that come with holidays and other special days. You can also find help for care-givers from the Family Caregiver Alliance, AARP, your local Alzheimer’s Association chapter,or support groups through hospitals, mental health programs, and community support organi-zations.

The holidays are a time to enjoy family, friends and good food. However, it can bea difficult time for those of us trying to make healthy choices. Live 2 B Healthy®not only encourages participants to remain active in exercise, but also seeks toimprove their overall wellness. Here, we will share with you some steps to help youenjoy the holidays and feel better about your health during this season.

Healthy Holiday Eating Tips:

● Use smaller plates to help limit portions.● Enjoy high calorie favorites in small portions.● Skip high calorie beverages. Opt for water.● Take smaller bites and savor your meal.● Fill your plate with lots of vegetables and

fruits. These are filling and provide a lot ofgood nutrients.

● Wait a few minutes between servings to allow your brain to tell your body youare full.

● Don’t arrive at mealtime completely famished. Eating a snack within a couple ofhours before the big meal will help prevent overeating.

● Don’t skip meals as a way to save up for the holiday meals. It is best if you eatregular meals during the holidays.

● Learn to say “no.” Don’t feel that you have to eat every time food is offered.● Move! Exercise is an important way to help you stay healthy. It helps control

appetite and handle the stress of the holidays. It will also help burn some of theextra calories you may have consumed.

● Get plenty of rest. When your body gets tired it leads you to make less healthyfood choices and might cause you to want to skip exercise.

● Planning ahead will help you to eat healthier and exercise during the holidays.

The holidays are probably not a good time to try to lose weight. Instead try to makehealthier food choices, stay active and exercise to prevent weight gain and improveyour overall health.
