The Hotchkiss Family Association Has Lost Our Genealogist

Joan Amy Ashford Johnson 1933-2017

It is with sadness that I write that Joan Ash-born Johnson passed away on November 11, 2017. She was the loving wife of Richard “Dick” Johnson for over 62 years. Joan was born in Waterbury, Connecticut on January 29, 1933, daughter of the late Ad-dison and Inez (Wheeler) Ashborn. She was a descendant of Joshua and Mary (Pardee) Hotchkiss, 526-113-461-23. Besides her husband, Joan is survived by her children Charles R. Johnson (Migdalia) of Surprise AZ, David R. Johnson of Phoenix AZ, and Jo-Ann Ford (Jeremy) of Waterbury, grandchildren Kelsey M. Johnson of Surprise AZ and Liam J. Ford of Waterbury, a sister Nancy Travis (’Buzz’) of Sun City AZ, along with several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother Alcott R. Ashborn and a sister Lorna Rand. Joan was employed by the American Brass Co (later Anaconda American Brass Co) in the general offices in Waterbury from 1949-1960. While her children were in school she worked as secretary to the pastor in various churches. In the 1970’s she began working with Nellie Cowdell updating genealogical records for the HFA which led to “inheriting” the original association records. She typed the first Hotch-kiss genealogy published in 1985, worked on the Hotchkiss Family, The Line From Joshua (1400+ pages) and continued tirelessly on The Line From John (2500+ pages in 2 volumes). A Memorial Service was held Saturday, November 18, 2017. It is a huge understate-ment to say Joan will be sorely missed by the Hotchkiss Family Association.

2018 HFA Annual Reunion in Mexico, New York

Date: Saturday, August 4, 2018 The Hotchkiss Family Association will meet for our annual reunion, dinner and speaker with a tour of the Starr Clark Tin Shop and Underground Railroad. This museum is part of the Haunted History Trail of New York State. Aboli-tionist and tinsmith Starr Clark hosted meetings and gave refuge to African-American slaves in this building from the mid 1830s to the Civil War. A well-documented site of the Underground Railroad, the refurbished building in-cludes UGRR exhibits and artifacts. PIT Cru paranormal investigators find the site to be “very interesting”. More about the reunion, nearby motels and other sites to see in the next newsletter. Stay tuned...

Y- DNA Testing—Autosomal DNA

This inquiry from Chris 238-(10)342-61 Is the association still interested in Y-DNA from Samuel²'s line? A male Hotchkiss cousin has tested with Ancestry, and I am encouraging him to do the free transfer to FamilyTreeDNA where more of my cousins have tested and a breakdown of shared DNA is better charted.

If the Y-DNA project for our Hotchkisses is ongoing, I will offer to share the cost of the Y-DNA test. While FTDNA charged me only $19 for autosomal (cousin) testing, I think the Y-DNA (male only) test costs some-thing like $79-$129 once they have the DNA in their files. I paid for a 67-marker test of a Greenlee first cousin years ago in the hope we could 'jump the pond' with that line, no joy there, but that family did not come to America until just before or even during the Revolu-tionary War. Hotchkiss’ in American are documented 150 years longer.

From the History of Norfolk, Litchfield Co., CT, compiled by Theron Crissey -pg 192 Subscriptions At a town meeting held in April, 1813, it was "Voted, that the south-east corner of the new meeting-house, in the line of the stake set by the committee from the County Court...It is of interest to recall the fact that at the time of the erection of the church building, which is still in fine order and condition, the whole business was done by the town, separate from any Ecclesiastical Society, or reli-gious organization. At a town Meeting held November 18th, 1811, "A vote was passed by the great majority to appoint a Committee for the purpose of obtaining sub-scriptions sufficient to build a new meeting-house by sub-scription entirely, if the Society agree on a place to set said house... A committee of twelve prominent men of town was chosen to solicit subscriptions, who evidently went promptly and earnestly to obtain as subscribers, the names of all the inhabitants belonging to the society, with the exception of a very few persons, not exceeding six or eight, and that number have engaged to add to their sub-scription, if necessary." "The subscribers promise to pay the sums affixed to our names for the purpose of building a meeting-house of a size 60 feet by 45, with a steeple and bell, at such place as shall best accommodate the Society, and to be fixed by a disinterested commit-tee." Hotchkiss Research Request A Hotchkiss descendant is looking for information on the parents of Susan Hotchkiss 1792-1854 who married Chauncey Todd in 1812 in Bethany. Information known is that Susan was born in Bethany, New Haven Co, CT and died in New Ber-lin, Chenango Co, NY. Susan was the sister of Edward Hotchkiss 1799-1800. He was born in Woodbridge CT and is buried in Smithfield, Prov-idence Co RI. He married Joanna Aldrich. They had two sons: Thomas & James Irwin . The lineage of Samuel2, son of Samuel the Immigrant will begin with Sylvia Jane Hotchkiss (Charles-3, Solomon-2, Ebenezer-2, Ebenezer-1, Samuel-2, Samuel–1) 1.Sylvia Jane Hotchkiss was born on 3 Mar 1811 in New Milford, Litchfield Co., CT. She was christened on 7 Jan 1812. She died on 24 Sep 1884 at the age of 73 in Weston, Fairfield Co., CT. Sylvia was buried in Coley Burying Ground, Fairfield Co., CT. Sylvia Jane Hotchkiss and Silas Smith were married on 4 Jul 1837. Silas Smith, son of Lyman Smith and Rachel God-

frey, was born on 3 Nov 1802 in Weston, CT. He died on 10 Jul 1841 at the age of 38 in Weston, CT. He was buried in Coleytown Yard, Weston, Fairfield Co. CT. Connecticut Town Marriage Records, pre-1870 (Barbour Collection) Weston - unknown newspaper Mrs. Sylvia J. Smith, mother of Mrs. Ebenezer Fitch, died Wednesday, the 24th inst., of typhoid fever, after an illness of about two weeks. Her funeral will be attended Saturday afternoon at one o'clock from her late residence at the home of her daughter. Interment at the Coley burying ground. She was seventy-three years of age. Years ago, as Miss Hotch-kiss, she taught school at Newtown, Redding, Monroe and other places. Silas Smith and Sylvia Jane Hotchkiss had the following children: 2 i. Eliza Jane Smith, born 11 Feb 1839; married Columbus Bulkley; died 17 Feb 1920, Weston, Fairfield Co., CT. 3 ii. Mary Amelia Smith, born 7 Feb 1841, Weston, CT; married Ebenezer Fitch, 9 Dec 1860; died 20 Aug 1912, Weston, CT.

Second Generation 2. Eliza Jane Smith (Sylvia Jane Hotchkiss-1) was born on 11 Feb 1839. She died on 17 Feb 1920 at the age of 81 in Weston, Fairfield Co., CT. Eliza Jane Smith and Columbus Bulkley were married. Columbus Bulkley, son of Nehemiah Bulkley and Sarah L. Beers, was born on 22 Jan 1832 in Weston, Fairfield Co., CT. Cont’d on page 5

Samuel-4,Samuel-3, Samuel-2, Samuel-1 First Generation 1. Samuel Hotchkiss was born on 5 Jun 1715 in East Haven, New Haven Co., CT. He died on 31 Aug 1774 at the age

of 59 in North Branford, New Haven Co., CT. HFB: None of this family is carried on as there is too much confusion with other families. From the History of East Haven by Sarah E. Hughes, Pub. 1908 by The Tuttle, Morehouse & Tay-lor Press, New Haven, Conn. Chapter X. In the French War of 1755, a number of men were drafted from East Haven for the English Army near the Lakes, and the greater part of them were lost by sickness and battle. Of these I have ob-tained the following names, viz.: among others; Jacob Moulthrop, David Moulthrop, Adonijah Moulthrop, Jacob Rob-inson, Benjamin Robinson, Thomas Robinson, jun. David Potter, John Mallory, Abraham Jocelin, Samuel Hotchkiss, James Smith, Samuel Russel and Stephen Russel, brothers. Benjamin Russel was captured at sea. Samuel Hotchkiss and Mary Goodsell were married on 16 Jul 1744 in East Haven, New Haven Co., CT. Mary Goodsell, daughter of Samuel Goodsell and Mary Frisbie, was born on 17 Dec 1719 in East Haven, New Haven Co., CT. She died about 1780 at the age of 61. Samuel Hotchkiss and Mary Goodsell had the following children:

i. Anna Hotchkiss was born (date unknown). ii. Mary Hotchkiss was born about 1745. She was christened on 19 Apr 1754. She died on 17 Jun

1779 at the age of 34 in North Branford, CT2. pod listed as Northford. iii. Samuel Hotchkiss was born about 1746. He died on 22 Aug 1751 at the age of 5 in North Bran-ford, CT. 5pod listed as Northford. iv. Sarah Hotchkiss was born about 1749. She died on 29 Aug 1751 at the age of 2 in North Branford, CT. pod listed as Northford. According to the East Haven Register by Rev. Stephen Dodd, published 1910 by Tuttle, Morehouse & Taylor Press, New Haven, Conn., she died in Northford. v. Samuel Hotchkiss4 was born circa 1754. He died by 1803 at the age of 49. vi. Ebenezer Hotchkiss was born about 1758. 4He was baptized on 17 Sep 1758 in North Branford, CT. 4He died in 1774 at the age of 16 in East Haven, New Haven Co., CT. pod listed as Northford. There is an Ebenezer of Northford who died 7 Oct 1774, ae 16 in the East Haven vital records. vii. Hannah Anna Hotchkiss, born abt 1761; married Jacob Bunnell Jr, 28 Mar 1786, North Branford, CT; died 28 Mar 1788, North Branford, CT.

Second Generation 2.

Hannah Anna Hotchkiss 4(Samuel-1) was born about 1761. She died on 28 Mar 1788 at the age of 27 in North Branford, CT. She was buried in Graveyard, Northford, CT. Hannah Anna Hotchkiss and Jacob Bunnell Jr were married on 28 Mar 1786 in North Branford, CT. Jacob Bunnell Jr, son of Jacob Bunnell and Mary Kimberly, was born on 12 Dec 1761 in Wallingford, CT. He died on 11 Aug 1802 at the age of 40 in North Branford, New Haven Co., CT.

3. 3. Ebenezer Hotchkiss was born about 1758. He was baptized on 17 Sep 1758 in North Branford, CT. He died in 1774 at the age of 16 in East Haven, New Haven Co., CT. pod listed as Northford. There is an Ebenezer of North-ford who died 7 Oct 1774, ae 16 in the East Haven vital records.
