The Cape Girardeau County Genealogical Society was organized in May 1970, a non-profit organization, its primary purpose is education in the field of genealogy. Membership is open to individuals upon payment of the annual dues of $10, or a couple for $15, per year, beginning in May. Life membership is available for a one-time payment of $250. [Another list went up to the Army of the Missouri headquarters in St. Louis at the end of the official conflict of the Civil War. This list may have been a “mop up”-type detail as the letter is dated April 22, 1865, but it also illustrates the tenuous relationship between the Union occupation authorities and the influential leaders and business men, and here, for the first time a few single women, of the city of Cape Girardeau.1]

[Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, Daniel Davis probate file, Box 62, Bundle 1207; Cape Girardeau County Archive Center, Jackson.] [Document 1 – Administrative Bond of Margaret Davis, administratrix, with Gillam Davis and William Leggett as bondsmen. Ends with the following:] [State of Missouri, County of Cape Girardeau, ss.] I [do solemnly] Swear [that to the best of] my [knowledge] Daniel Davis died leaving as his legal heirs the following persons (to wit) Margaret Davis, widow, of said deceased Dovey Liggett.
