The Accolade

December 2014

Dear parents, students, staff and governors,

Mrs V Neale

The Monthly Celebratory Newsletter from County Upper

We believe strongly in excellence in doing one’s best, getting involved and giving service. Month by month, each edition of ‘The Accolade’ demonstrates these qualities in abundance. As the term ends, we have selected

just one example of each for the front of this publication.

Our Core Values

December has been quite a month with a huge number of activities across all subjects; the completion of auditions for next summer’s musical, ‘The Wiz’; an apt theatre visit to see ‘White Christmas’; our work experience prize assembly; a full programme of sport and much high quality music.

For many, December is the most special time in the County year as the whole school, led by the Sixth form, comes together to raise money for local, national and international charities. The atmosphere was superb again this year and everyone got

behind the Charity Team in true County style.

We held our whole school assembly on the last afternoon and celebrated the many successes since September, presented prizes for last summer’s examinations and gave cheques to representatives from our charities once the final total was revealed. As the term ends, I hope that the peace of the Christ child and the joy of the angels may be yours this Christmas.

Giving Service in the Cathedral Our Main PrizesWe were pleased to take part in the Eucharist Service on Advent Sunday. This was one of the days when our students contribute to regular worship in St Edmundsbury Cathedral. The two lessons were read by Doug Sands, our Head Boy and Jen McGaley, our Deputy Head Girl. Both were praised for their intelligent, composed readings by the clergy and congregation alike. The offertory was taken up by Samuel Hill, Timothy Hill, Lucy Kingston and Hannah Lockyear from the main school. We were joined by staff, parents and governors, past and present, to emphasise our commitment to the ideal of service.

All our prizes reflect our values. Amongst those awarded in our assembly, the following five are perhaps the most representative of our relentless pursuit of excellence and of being the best you can be.

School Prizes for Excellence at GCSE: Chloe Cunningham and William Curwen

School Prizes for Most Progress: Megan Feetham and Jordan Harris

The Harrington Trophy for All-Round Contribution: Emma Bradley

We congratulate these students and all our prize winners listed later in this edition.

Work Experience 2014Local employers all stress the importance of students undertaking work experience and, nationally, it is

being promoted strongly that all schools should give every student a fortnight in the world of work. Here, we have always ensured that every member of year eleven spends two weeks on work experience

and this year’s fortnight went extremely well. Almost without exception, the reports from employers and the feedback to staff who visited the placements were outstanding. As a result, a huge number of year eleven students

gained ‘highly commended’ certificates and it was very difficult to select this year’s prizewinners. In a special assembly this month, we enjoyed a video of the fortnight and awarded the prizes to:

11J KatieSchofieldandJoshuaEmerson11K Michaela Gotts and Jack Lune11L Hannah Crown and Toby Gardiner11M Rebecca Burroughs and Murrie Kybird11N Chloe Manning and Ryan Gibbs11O Charlotte Titcombe and Jack Hailstone11P Francesca Corley and Thomas Spetch11R Amy Bowers and Robbie Goldman11S Bella Proctor and Aaron Taylor11T Emily Wilding-Smith and Rob Askew

Best student on the army programme: Steven DimonBest boy in a charity placement: Ben LambertBest girl in a charity placement: Alicia Manchip-HillBest student in a Trust school placement: Sophie ParsonsMost initiative shown: Cameron Redden

We congratulate all the students who gained ‘Highly Commended’ certificates:

We remain very grateful to all the local businesses, schools, charities and public sector employers who provided work placements for our students. We especially thank Mrs Jolly and Mrs Allan who organised this year’s work experience programme supported by Ms Walters, the year eleven tutor team and all the staff who visited the

students on their placements.

A very musical ChristmasOnce again our musicians were much in demand in the community, playing and singing for a whole variety of events, a selection of which are included here in recognition of all that our students do. We also enjoyed a Christmas concert

in school featuring all our main ensembles performing a variety of pieces to get us in the mood for the festive season. The following week saw our carol service, which for many marks the start of their Christmas, and a

student-led concert for Charity 2014. As the term ends, we thank Miss Green, Mr Jarvis, Mr Jenkins, Mr Nayler, our peripatetic team and our Captains of Music for the phenomenal quality, quantity and variety of music

we have enjoyed again this term.

The Christmas ConcertThirteen of our ensembles performed a largely secular programme including everything from ‘The Skater’s Waltz’,

played by our full orchestra through to the very large Barbershop Choir’s version of ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday’. The eighty strong wind band played highlights from ‘Frozen’ while different versions of ‘Santa Claus Is

Coming To Town’ from the Sixth Form Choir and Jazz Ensemble left us in no doubt that Christmas is near! Well done to all who took part:

The Carol ServiceWe held our annual traditional service of lessons and carols in St Mary’s Church. Five of our choirs

provided sacred pieces for the season while the full choir and brass ensemble, led by Georgia White, the congregational carols. Interspersed throughout the service, our chamber choir and string orchestra performed Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’. We especially congratulate Timothy Hill who sang the solo in ‘Once In Royal David’s City’ and

Edwina d’Almeida, Gabrielle Deora and Riona Snelling for their solos in ‘the Gloria’. We thank the Reverend Malcolm Rogers for conducting the service and James Thomas for playing the organ.

The readings were contributed by:Year 9: Chloe Ashman and Ben HartickYear 10: Ben Amroota and Alice WalkerYear 11: Rosie Grant and Murrie Kybird

The Charity ConcertOur Sixth Form Musicians arranged a third treat for us this month as a further fundraiser for charity 2014. The headline act was our Little Big Band who are always in demand for functions. They were joined by extremely talented folk singer, Tilly Dalglish whose reputation continues to grow. Other contributions included our sixth form choir, jazz ensemble, close harmony group and a solo perfomance from Katy Rochford.

The West Suffolk Jazz Orchestra, Orchestra and Wind BandWe are also proud and privileged to contribute to the programme organised by the West Suffolk Music Centre which is based here. The three ensembles gave their first concerts of the academic year this month and we were pleased to support them with a huge proportion of the musicians in all three ensembles coming from our school. We congratulate:

Musicians in the communityn Our Chamber Choir performed at the EACH Carol Service held in St Edmundsbury Cathedral. They received a large number of very complimentary comments for this and other recent performances.

n Yet again our Swing Band played for two hours on Angel Hill for the St Edmundsbury Christmas Fayre. They attracted a huge crowd and lived up to their reputation as ‘the best swing band for miles’.

n Our annual invitation to play for the guests at the Theatre Royal Pantomime Gala Opening was extended again this year. Our jazz trio of Jack Davis, Katy and Sophie Rochford entertained the specially invited audience in the foyer before the performance began and in the upper dress circle as the children queued to see Father Christmas. Julia Read from the Theatre wrote, “just to let you know how brilliantly your students played. They made an absolutely wonderful sound. Please thank them for their fabulous muscianship”.

n The All-Through Trust schools entertained the crowds outside The Apex for the Arc’s special Christmas Sunday. We thank our Covers Choir who contributed to the carols and songs. We are also grateful to Katy and Sophie Rochford who brought the event to a close with a selection of jazz numbers.

n Josh Reeder in year twelve entertained the residents at Kentford Manor this month. They contacted us to say how much his music was enjoyed and appreciated. Well done, Josh.

It has been another good month for our work in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics with a range of activities across the age range and another set of extremely successful courses for teachers across the region organised by us as the Science Learning Partnership for Norfolk and Suffolk.

n We congratulate our year thirteen ‘A’ level further mathematics students who took responsibility for preparing all the problems for this half term’s Trust Masterclass. This time the most able mathematicians from year eight in Howard, Horringer Court and Westley spent a morning here led by Mr Penn and supported by the ‘A’ level students whose problems they solved. Well done to: Ruairidh Brydon, Thomas Fisher, Stephanie Foulds, Laurence Grant, Roderick Mansel and Sophie Rochford.

n This half term’s All-Through Trust mathematics morning to consolidate the work done this term was entitled The Great Jewellery Theft Challenge. Over two hundred pupils from years four and five across all our five schools took part, supported by the Head Students at Horringer Court and our year nine students. We congrat-ulate all those year nine students who did an excellent job as young leaders.

n Our annual visit to London for the Mathematics Conference took place this month. With over fifty year twelve students studying the subject, we were well represented. The group enjoyed a series of fascinating lectures. We thank Mr Penn for organising it and con-gratulate the students on their excellent participation.Marion Denby wrote:

n Both our Education Engineering teams had site visits to their companies this month. This provided an invaluable background to the projects they are under-taking and both teams made a very good impression on Global Marine Technologies and Hawkins, respectively. We thank Mr Randé and Mr Willis for accompanying them and congratulate the students involved.

n This month saw two events organised through our Rolls-Royce prize. CHaoS, Cambridge Hands On Science, is a programme run by the University of Cambridge to enthuse younger pupils through practical science. The team spent a day here with two hundred Trust pupils from years four to eight. Our sixth form science captains did an excellent job of supporting the team and we congratulate them all.

STEM Round Up

The day was really enjoyable consisting of five captivating lectures which opened our eyes to the world of maths. We saw maths used in everyday situtations like banking and cryptography. It was an amazing opportunity to learn new things including how to prove anything and the psychology of numbers.

Page 8: December 2014 The Accolade Accolade December 2014 Dear ... William Ashwell ... while different versions of ‘Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’ from the Sixth Form Choir and

n Our year nine students had an excellent Engineering Challenge morning with Chris Tague from Rolls-Royce. They worked in groups to build a model jet engine. They did a fantastic job and asked lots of good questions. As Mr Tague commented, “the future looks bright for our budding scientists”. He is an Engineer and Rolls-Royce manager so he also spoke to a group of students across the year groups about a career in engineering and his own experience.

n The Chemistry in Action lectures organised for year twelve students took place in London again this year and made a fascinating day for our thirty-three AS chemists. They were engaged and immersed throughout, being excellent ambassadors for our school. Well done to them and thank you to Dr Hanfrey for organising it.

n We congratulate Amy Davies in year nine who was selected as the runner-up in the Glasswells’ Western Area Poetry Competition. Amy’s poem is displayed in the store and she attended a presentation ceremony with Miss Johnson this month.

n Twenty sixth form students went on a Media Stud-ies/English trip to The Guardian in London. The day involved a group workshop accurately to reflect the pro-cess of sourcing, writing and editing the news in order to create a four-page publication. Each student was given a copy of the group’s newspaper. The group was a real credit to our school and we were delighted to receive this comment from Elli Narewska at The Guardian, “The group were really great today, extremely hard-working, and really took the news-telling seriously. It was a pleasure to have them at The Guardian.”

Well done to the whole group who had an amazing, beneficial day and our thanks to Miss Rhodes for organising it.

More success across the curriculum

n This month we presented certificates to eight year nine students for their History Project to produce a World War One Diary. The research they conducted and the presentation of their diaries were exceptional. We thank Chris Hazell again, whose research about his Great-Uncle Oscar’s war experience started the year group off on this homework exercise. Well done to: Beth Diver, Emma Le Poidevin, Pearl Liao, Alex Miller, Alex Shingleton, Rebecca Steven, Fraser Stewart and Eleanor Suter.

Page 9: December 2014 The Accolade Accolade December 2014 Dear ... William Ashwell ... while different versions of ‘Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’ from the Sixth Form Choir and

n Some of our ‘A’ level artists spent two days in London this month conducting research for their project. They visited a series of galleries and museums across the city, sketching and making notes which will be invaluable next term. Throughout the trip the students were a pleasure to be with and made the very most of the opportunity. We congratulate them and thank Mr Hodgson for accompanying them.

n This month’s event in our Modern Foreign Languages international programme saw us host our annual visit from Oita in Japan. Our students were able to repay the hospitality shown by our guests when they were in Oita last month and both sets of students enjoyed a varied programme of activities. Well done to them and thank you to Mrs Browning for all the arrangements.

n As part of our programme Jule Eckert from our partner school in Germany, Amos Comenius in Bonn, has spent this term with us. We have loved having you Jule and wish you every success.

The Sport ReportIt has been another excellent term for the quality and quantity of sport we have enjoyed as well as the breadth and depth of our participation at all levels and across the age range. Since the area and county championships started in October we have entered at least one team ineverycompetitionandalreadyhavetakenfirstorsecond place in thirteen Western area tournaments thus progressing to the Suffolk round. A number of individual students have also continued our reputation for county, regional, national and international representa-tion and we congratulate them all. As the term ends we thank all our PE staff for their commitment, dedication and inspirational example to our students: Miss Sharp, Mr Marshall, Mr Beddow, Mr Bishop, Mr Golding, Miss Guy, Mr Hamill, Mr Johnson, Mr Snelling, Mr Stewart and Mrs Stoten.

Individual Successn We remain very proud of William Cooke Wharton’s tennis success. This month he won the U16 Grade 3 Winter Regional Tournament at Harlow. This attracts a very high standard of players from across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Suffolk, Surrey and Sutton. William held his nerve in a match which lasted two-and-a-quarter hours and went to 13-11 in the championship tie-break! Well done, Will!

n We are especially proud of Katrina Kemp in year nine who represented England at the Home Counties Indoor Combined Events International Meet in Glasgow this month. She competed in the U16 pentathlon, a year young. With personal bests in high jump, long Jump and 60m hurdles, Katrina finished as the 1st English athlete and runner-up in the UK. Well done!

One of our strengths is the consistency of our results year-on-year. Another, of course, is that they put us right at the top of Suffolk and England for both GCSE and ‘A’ level performance. Perhaps most importantly, we are renowned for achieving this high level of success across the ability range, enabling the overwhelming majority of students to do their best. Our ‘A’ level prizes were presented at our special evening for last year’s year thirteen while our GCSE prizes were presented during our whole school assembly on the last afternoon of term. We congratulate all those who won prizes and continue to be extremely grateful to all the local companies who so generously sponsor them.

Our cook retiresWe end this edition where we began, with the quality of giving service. Our cook, Mrs Janet Walker has served our school with distinction since 1993. Throughout that long time, she has always produced high quality food, led her kitchen staff ‘from the front’ and served thousands of pupils and staff with courtesy and a smile. We are very sorry to see her go and she leaves with our enormous gratitude for a job superbly well done. We wish her the long, healthy, happy retirement she so richly deserves.
