This group is growing and you’d be

welcome to join. Ordinary People by

Judith Guest is the book for December.

The group picks a book, we get copies

from the library, read it over the month

and then meet to discuss the book. Talk

to Karla if you are interested.

Carol sends this update:

Everything is going as expected with

my knee replacement. I’m getting

stronger every day and doing my

physical therapy.

I hope to be at Luther Park to visit

before very long and look forward to

when I am back at work.

A NOTE FROM THE NURSES: Pneumonia Vaccinations

There are now two different types of Pneumonia Vaccinations available. The Centers for Disease Control And

Prevention and many physicians are now recommending getting both vaccines.

PNEUMOCOCCAL CONJUGATE VACCINE (PCV13)

The new vaccine for children and adults, called pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13 or Prevnar 13®),

protects against the 13 types of pneumococcal bacteria that cause most of the severe illness in children and

adults. The vaccine can also help prevent some ear infections. PCV13 protects children and adults by preparing

their bodies to fight the bacteria. PCV13 is also recommended to help prevent pneumococcal disease in adults

19 years or older with certain medical conditions and in all adults 65 years or older.

PNEUMOCOCCAL POLYSACCHARIDE VACINE

The pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23 or Pneumovax 23®) protects against 23 types of

pneumococcal bacteria. It is recommended for all adults 65 years and older and for anyone who is 2 years and

older at high risk for disease(http://www.cdc.gov/pneumococcal/about/risk-transmission.html). PPSV23 is also

recommended for adults 19 through 64 years of age who smoke cigarettes or who have asthma.

It is also important to get an influenza vaccine every year because having the flu increases your chances of

getting pneumococcal disease.

Luther Park nurses recommend that all residents speak with their doctors regarding appropriate

vaccinations.

WINTER WEATHER Our goal is to have sidewalks cleaned and clear of snow by 8:00 AM and the driveways by 10:00 AM. Howev-

er, the weather doesn’t always cooperate. So we will do our best to get everything cleared as quickly as possi-

ble. If you have a car in the parking lot, Jens will be contacting you to either get a spare key or to have a place

just inside your door where a staff member can get your keys. We will clean the car off, move it, plow and

then return your car to the parking spot it was in, and return your keys. Please do not pull your car all the way

forward so it is over the sidewalk as this makes it more difficult to shovel or blow off the sidewalks and dan-

gerous for those walking. If you have a car and you don’t drive in the winter, please consider relocating the car

to a relative or friends home.

UPCOMING SEASONAL &HOLIDAY DECORATING This is your home and we encourage you to decorate and do as you wish, but since we are licensed by the State

of Idaho there are a few rules and regulations that we all have to follow in order to stay safe. Please review the

following before you start decorating:

The use of live and/or cut Christmas trees or other decorations such as wreaths and swags is prohibited.

Wreaths on apartment doors may not contain any real plant materials, such as pine cones, leaves or flowers

Artificial trees and other decorations are permitted provided they are labeled as being flame retardant.

The use of plastic or paper door cover decorations is prohibited such as the full door-size decorations or

wrapping your door with wrapping paper. The addition of flammable decorations creates a flashover haz-

ard that can overwhelm the sprinkler system.

All lights must be UL listed, be in good condition and plugged directly into an outlet. Plugging one light

string into the end of another and the use of extension cords and multiple adapters is prohibited.

Candles, or the burning of candles, is prohibited. Residents are welcome to use non-burning candles.

The use of outlet adapters is prohibited. Residents may use a multi-strip but it must have a surge protector.

We anticipate several more weeks until

they complete the project. Thank you so

much for your patience as we make this
