T he merriest time of the year has arrived. Merchants are busily greeting customers in their stores, marketing companies are

gloating in the success of their campaign strategies, banks and credit card companies are adding their personal touches, as carolers, musicians, hotels and catering companies add their own flare of spirit to the holiday season we enjoy and celebrate every year.

As we say farewell to 2013 and prepare to welcome a new year, we have to pause to celebrate an incredible month that shows Fort Bend County’s strengths and amazing synergy. Check out our Data Beat and expanding service directory. We witnessed the commitment of Mercyfull Health Care to its patients and communities, the leaders of Katy serving the new emerging “energy” corridor, Needville ISD inventing career paths and tasty dishes through its new House of Blue cafe, the chambers going above and beyond the milestones already set, our hospital administrators and staffs exploring new and improved ways to serve the public, and don’t forget the county government that is on task daily to improve the infrastructure we so often take for granted and depend on to reach our destinations.

This month we witnessed the dedication of the Judge James C. Adolphus Elementary School located at 7910 Winston Ranch Parkway (off Grand Parkway and West Bellfort) in Richmond. In the midst of all the month’s business exchanges, former City Manager Glen Gilmore was honored for his 23 years of service to Richmond. The flag has been passed to

Teri Vela. Thanks to Trend Homes and Aliana, a new community is spurring the growth of development and announcements keep popping of new businesses coming. Gallery Furniture is bringing its largest shopping marketplace with two entrances, a hotel, and two restaurants to a site next to the Santikos Palladium complex, which itself pulls 9,000 guests on weekends. Expect the 130,000 SF structure to open Memorial Day 2014.

Aldi Grocery Stores announced its corporation is bringing a 650,000 SF office structure and 80-150 jobs to a location at Spur 529 and Highway 90 in Rosenberg by 2016. Jeff Haley, CEO, and Aaron Clark, CFO, of Si Environmental (water and waste water services) in Rosenberg announced they are only getting started with their 10,000 SF company located on seven acres along Reading Road and Brazos Town Center. Their 60 employees handle some 64,000 connections.

Chamber luncheons are also scheduled. UH Systems President Renu Khator will discuss record breaking research funding and continuing growth from 11:30 am - 1 pm on December 16 at the Sugar Land Marriott. The system has been designated as a Tier One research university and a 75-acre Energy Research Park is part of a $1 billion campus construction program. An annual chamber awards luncheon sets off the new year from 11:30 am - 1 pm on January 10 at Cindy’s Palace in Richmond.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital plans major expansion

New patient tower located between the Sweetwater Pavilion and Main Pavilion on the Hous-ton Methodist Sugar Land Hospital campus.

H ouston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is embarking on a major expansion that will add a new 6 story

patient tower and include its first development in Missouri City.

Five major projects, with a total cost of more than $131 million, are planned for groundbreaking between now and summer 2014 that will expand the hospital’s physical footprint, significantly enhance its ability to serve patients across Fort Bend and surrounding counties and add a number of new jobs.

“We are investing in Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital because Fort Bend continues to grow in size and population and our patients are seeking an ever broader range of sophisticated medical and surgical treatments close to home,” said Houston Methodist CEO Marc L. Boom, M.D. “Since its inception, Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has achieved a significant number of medical ‘firsts’ for Fort Bend County, and we want to ensure that our outstanding physicians and staff have the facilities they need to continue that level of quality care.”

Emergency Care Center The expansion effort kicks off in

November with groundbreaking on a new 9,600-square-foot emergency care center on Highway 6 in Missouri City, between the Sienna Plantation and Riverstone communities. The facility is scheduled to open in summer 2014, and will house 10 treatment rooms and the latest technology in diagnostic imaging equipment.

“This is an exciting development because it gives us a physical presence in the heart of the fast-growing Missouri City community,” said Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital CEO Chris Siebenaler. “The new emergency care center will give Missouri City residents a

first-class medical facility within minutes of their homes.”

Patient TowerThe new patient tower will be added

between the Sweetwater Pavilion and Main Pavilion on the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital campus, and will add 104 beds, bringing the hospital’s total to 339 beds. The tower will add much needed capacity in the form of intensive care beds and medical/surgical beds, with space remaining for future expansion. Groundbreaking will take place in the summer of 2014; the tower should open to patients in the first quarter of 2016.

“The new patient tower will provide a number of benefits,” said Siebenaler. “Most importantly, adding more than 100 new beds will enable us to care for more patients here in Fort Bend County.”

Siebenaler also stated that parking will continue to be free at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.

Orthopedics & Sports MedicineThe hospital is also building a new

facility on campus for Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine physicians. Currently located at Highway 6 and Brooks Street, the practice will move

to a new 60,000-square-foot building located on the corner of Highway 59 and Sweetwater Boulevard. The facility will include space for physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, aquatic therapy, cardiac rehabilitation, expanded physician clinic space, an outside training facility for athletes recovering from injury and an employee gym. The Spine Center will also be relocated from the Main Pavilion to a larger space in this new building. Groundbreaking will take place in the second quarter of 2014; completion is expected in the first quarter of 2015.

“Orthopedics and sports medicine are among the fastest growing specialties of care in Fort Bend, and this new facility will enable us to bring all our related services together on the Sugar Land campus,” Siebenaler said.

Cath Lab/Heart Center“Houston Methodist Sugar Land

Hospital has been a consistent leader in bringing the most sophisticated and complex cardiac care services to Fort Bend, and our physicians are now regularly performing a number of procedures that simply weren’t possible outside of the medical center just a few years ago,” said

Siebenaler. “The expansion and relocation of our Heart Center and Cath Labs will make it possible for us to provide an even higher level of cardiac care in the years to come.”

The hospital is building a new Cath Lab/Heart Center that will relocate

closer to the emergency room to ensure the utmost speed in caring for patients suffering from heart attacks. The 20,000-square-foot Cath Lab/Heart Center will include four state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization suites, including two electrophysiology labs. The Heart

The Heart Center will also have its own entrance as well as upfront parking.

Birthing Center The hospital is currently renovating

and updating its Birthing Center, and will add additional capacity in the Sweetwater Pavilion when the Cath Lab moves into its new facility.

“We are thrilled to move forward with all of these plans and begin shaping the next generation of patient care facilities in Fort Bend,” said Siebenaler. “But one thing will not change, and that is our commitment to providing excellent, compassionate and personal care to our patients and families. That will always remain the foundation of our efforts at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, even as we continue to expand.”

Center will also offer nuclear, echocardiogram and stress testing on an outpatient basis. Groundbreaking is scheduled for summer 2014 with the facility’s opening planned for the fourth quarter of 2015.

Needville High School’s House of Blue

T his ain’t your mama’s school lunch.

Needville High School’s House of Blue has people

flocking in to partake of some of the tastiest dishes this side of Wolfgang Puck’s.

The brainchild of retired Culinary Arts teacher Sharon Allenson, the restaurant is now overseen by Sarah Rioux, who teaches Restaurant Management as well as Culinary Arts I and II.

Rioux served as a substitute teacher for Allenson for three years, then took over the reins of the program this year. She’s been using some of her original recipes, including her award-winning pie crust and homemade pasta, to teach her students about cooking; but that’s only a small portion of what they learn.

“Culinary Arts is about the cooking, but it’s also so much about the safety and sanitation, and purchasing and storing food products correctly,” she said. “It’s about maintaining the professional kitchen and learning how to use all the different equipment.”

Restaurant Management, on the other and, focuses on customer service and how to manage both the dining room and service area while communicating efficiently with the kitchen staff.

“And that’s a really big thing to learn. That’s our biggest challenge, is learning how to get the front and back to communicate effectively,” Rioux said.

Students in all the classes learn the business aspects of owning and operating a restaurant, and Rioux said that knowledge will serve them well in any business.

They also learn about food costs and how to break their product down to cost per serving.

“That helps them understand why we charge what we charge for a meal,” said Rioux. A typical lunch at House of Blue costs $7.50 and includes a salad, entrée, tea

and what Rioux described as “a decadent dessert.”

“To-go meals cost an extra $1 for all the paper goods because all the paper goods add up,” she said. “The students learn these things. House of Blue is not a moneymaking venture, other than it feeds our college fund.”

She’s hoping the restaurant will also soon generate enough profit to purchase a point-of-sale cash register, which she regards as another important teaching tool.

Rioux attended culinary school and said she’s thrilled to be sharing that knowledge with students as they learn advanced aspects of the career and decide whether it’s something they’d like to pursue.

For junior Xander Smith, it’s a given, just as is his upcoming military service. He’s already joined the Air Force and plans to head to basic training as soon as he graduates, then use his skills in the mess hall.

“All my family has been in military, and the torch is just kind of handed down to the next person,” he said. “After the Air Force, I’ll probably go to Culinary Arts school.”

Smith said he’s enjoys cooking for others,

has always been interested in how restaurants operate, and has learned a great deal through House of Blue.

“I’ve moved a couple of times, and this is the only school I’ve been to that actually does this with their Culinary Arts program,” he said. “I like the idea of all the staff at the school being able to have a nice, home-cooked meal instead of having to eat out of the cafeteria.”

But it’s not just school staff who eat at House of Blue; everyone is welcome, and more and more people are discovering the hidden gem. Local workers, businessmen and organizations are find the relaxed atmosphere, linen-covered tables complete with fresh flowers, and properly-set tables a nice break from the routine.

One of the most recent clubs to visit House of Blue was the Fort Bend County German Society. Member Barbara Cooper said Rioux and her students did some research and served the group of nearly 25 a exquisite meal of pork cutlets, red cabbage, homemade noodles and German chocolate cake.

“They did a wonderful job,” Cooper said. “Just the fact that they’re learning to look at customers in the eye and be polite to them and have conservations with them puts them steps ahead of many places we go out to eat. It was an enlightening experience.”

House of Blue also caters meals for venues such as the Needville Youth Fair and school board meetings. In fact, Trustee Chris Janicek has been a fan of the program for quite some time and eats at the restaurant just about every week.

“House of Blue is a great compliment to a great school district,” he said. “Just look at the results: The students not only get a great understanding of culinary arts, but they also improve their communication skills and get exposure to the businesses world. What I like about it so much, besides the delicious food, is that it leads to possible careers for these kids. In fact, some of them have received Culinary Arts scholarships to universities.”

Senior Sarah Gardiner may be one of those students who pursue Culinary Arts as a career.

“This is actually something I want to do. I love to cook, and I felt that this class would help me to improve my cooking and basic skills,” she said, adding it has done just that. “Ms. Rioux has us price everything and prepare the cost and how much we need to make to profit and how much to charge. I think it really is a good program because it not only teaches us how to cook, but it also teaches us the business side.”

Donna Everest teaches the Human Services aspect of Family and Consumer Science, which is the entry-level course for Restaurant Management and Culinary Arts students. She also assists Rioux at House of Blue and helps train servers.

Together, they teach their students a variety of skills that can be translated into any business and give them the opportunity to chance to explore a career while they’re still in high school.

Superintendent Curtis Rhodes lauded

the program as “a great teaching tool,” and said it offers insight on everything from health and safety requirements to accounting methodologies.

For her part, Rioux said the state-of-the-art kitchen only adds to her “dream job,” as do the students she works with on a daily basis.

She also said she appreciates the community’s support and buys everything locally.

Plans are in the works to invite local business owners to a luncheon soon, and a cookie tea at Christmastime will provide students the opportunity to study international recipes and make a variety of different cookies.

In the meantime, everyone is always welcome to House of Blue for a mouth-watering, home-cooked lunch Fridays through Dec. 21. After Christmas break, Rioux hopes to add Wednesdays as well.

Rosenberg’s historic downtown successfully re-inventing itself

The Cole Theater in downtown Rosenberg, was built in 1919 and showed movies until 1983. Renovations are underway to restore the theater and incorporate it into the area’s arts community.

Ask Renee Butler to describe what Rosenberg’s downtown looked like just a few years ago and she doesn’t have many positive

things to say.“A few antique stores, bars and

boarded up buildings”, said Butler. “Then Bill started buying the historic buildings and fixing them up.”

One of the buildings Bill Butler purchased, eventually became Another Time Soda Fountain in 2004. It was around that time that the downtown merchants had an epiphany: by working together, they could transform the historic downtown area into a shopping and entertainment destination.

“We had a lot of challenges with the downtown area because it is always easier to put in a new development rather than fix the old”, said Matt Fielder, Rosenberg’s Economic Development Director. “But we supported their vision.”

Everyone knew that a few mom and pop shops weren’t enough to pull tourists off of 59. The merchants appealed to the Central Fort Bend Chamber who created the

Historic Downtown Rosenberg Division. In 2011, the city signed an agreement with Imperial Arts, bringing arts and culture to the downtown area. A Cultural Arts District designation from the Texas Commission on the Arts soon followed.

“It takes effort to diversify”, said Shanta Kuhl, President of the Central Fort Bend Chamber. “The merchants have worked hard to bring in the retail, the arts, the dining options and make the area attractive to a broad audience.”

There were also unpleasant realities to deal with, like a 100 year old sewer system. The City tackled the area’s infrastructure issues, completing a sewer rehab project and repairing sidewalks on 3rd Street. Additional parking is still needed and may be included in a May bond election.

“Merchants are saying they’ve had their best year ever and that is forcing us to re-evaluate our business plan”, said Mike Mercado,owner of BR Vino and Brazos Provisions. . “We have to increase our hours, add inventory and hire more employees. These are issues we couldn’t even fathom five years ago.”

Today, Rosenberg’s downtown area boasts three restaurants, a wine bar, two theaters, a museum and a variety of retail shops. The merchants are ecstatic at the interest shown in the dwindling supply of available space. They want to host more events and they are working with the city to allow alcohol to be served outdoors. Best of all, the merchants are quick to point out that empty, boarded up buildings are a thing of the past.

“It’s nice to see this change in the downtown area. It’s become a destination rather than a pass through city” said Butler.

L ocal officials gathered to witness the “crowning” of Imperial Sugar Land as an art piece patterned after a version from the Imperial

Sugar Company was installed at the main entrance of the master-planned community on Highway 6 near Constellation Field.

Measuring over five feet wide and just over four feet tall, the polished and painted aluminum art piece is now suspended at the top of a 40-foot tower at Imperial Sugar Land’s main entrance. Designed by TBG Partners of Houston, the community’s new art piece combines the traditional design of a historic crown from the Imperial Sugar Company, now in the care of the Sugar Land Historical Society, with the more modern-looking logo of Imperial Sugar Land.

Tentative plans for the land are as follows: The 45 acres that stretches along Highway 59 and South Kirkwood (the side with the baseball field) are designated for retail space.

The back 60 acres of the property, West Airport and Murphy Road, are being considered for office warehouse complexes. And the final 85 acres in between are marked for multi-family use, but will not be available for construction until “mid-2016” when Texas Instruments completely vacates the premises.

There are environmental concerns for 6 of the 85 acres, but T.I. has stated their

day Mayor Leonard Scarcella says he’ll never forget, the City of Stafford was forced to learn this lesson. Rich in history with Stafford, and the gateway to Fort Bend County, the reality that T.I. was leaving slowly sank in. As time went by and possibilities presented themselves, a blank canvas for a lemonade stand emerged—a lemonade stand that is not required to pay city property taxes.

Mayor Scarcella stated pointedly that the T.I. property does not belong to the City of Stafford and T.I. can sell it to whomever they choose. He has been involved in discussions with two different developers said to be in the running,

who share similar visions for the 180 acres.

The City of Stafford’s tall glass of lemonadecommitment to resolving this matter, and the EPA and TCEQ will also need to give the all clear. “I have no doubt in my mind that this environmental concern will be just fine,” Mayor Scarcella said. He envisions “innovative housing where citizens can live, work, play, and pray.” The Mayor also said there has been some talk about Stafford City Hall being relocated to the new property, much like Sugar Land’s City Hall. A decision about the T.I. property should be made “by the end of the year” according to the Mayor.

Another reason to raise the glass, the Stafford Centre Performing Arts Theater & Convention Center is turning10 years-old March 2014. By then, 3 million people will have traveled through their doors. An idea that was not well received when first introduced, has now exceeded expectations and predictions.

There have been ten years of concerts, charities, weddings, plays, choirs, luncheons, symposiums, celebrations, lectures, performances, and much more. Beginning in January and running through April, the Stafford Centre will be scheduling many special events to celebrate this occasion.

Sometimes not being able to see the forest for the trees is a good thing. Such is the case with a remarkable new product made in Kerrville and

keep the hunter hidden from both the deer and the elements, with textured surfaces that look and feel like the real thing, right down to the smallest detail.

The blinds are 7 feet, 3 inches tall, with an interior height of 7 feet, and each one has a fully-locking door with multiple vantage points. The exterior diameter is 7 feet, and the interior diameter is 5 feet, four inches, by 5 feet. They weigh only 350 pounds.

Drain holes keep moisture from collecting on the domed roof, and silent windows can be opened and closed without animals hearing a sound.

“They have perfected the windows. These blinds are super,” Dannhaus said. “Deer come within a couple of feet; they truly don’t know it’s not a tree. You sit in there, and there are animals all around you.”

Morris said there is nothing else on the market like Nature Blinds, which he described as “a great product.”

“Hours and hours of hand work go into each product,” he said. “People who use our products are finding incredible results in the field.”

He said the blinds are unobtrusive, which many landowners find particularly appealing.

A businessman with plenty of experience in a wide variety of ventures, Dannhaus studied the products closely before deciding to become a dealer.

Although most of his career has been spent as an ag pilot, Dannhaus is also well-known throughout the area for his welding abilities. His shop, 14200 Buffalo St. in

Needville, also supplies Diamond Feeders and other products that earn the Dannhaus seal of approval.

“I’ve always built my own deer feeders, but as much of a perfectionist as I am, I haven’t built anything to compare to these,” he said. “I’m the only dealer in the area for them, as well. They’re top-notch, well-built and affordable.”

Dannhaus said the feeders prevent raccoons, squirrels and other small animals from stealing corn and “having a little buffet” at the hunter’s expense.

“Like everything we’ll carry, they’re very stout and guaranteed,” he said. “If I’m gonna do it, it’s only gonna be top-of-the-line quality, without regard to the price. If someone wants the best available, this is it; innovative, new stuff.”

He’s served as a guide in Mexico and North America, and insists both products can only enhance the hunting experience.

L ast month, the Technology Incubator West Houston (TIWH) welcomed the debut of its first major start-up client, the online penny auction company, Bid Serious (www.bidserious.com). The co-founders of

Bid Serious, Cory Owens and David Lee, who have backgrounds in multi-media and e-commerce, worked extensively with the TIWH to gather input and feedback during much of Bid Serious’ planning phase.

University of Houston President Renu Khator to discuss higher education at Fort Bend Chamber luncheon

T he Education and Governmental Relations Divisions of the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce will

host University of Houston President Renu Khator on Dec. 16. She will discuss how the current legislation has affected higher education in the state of Texas.

The luncheon will be held at the Sugar Land Marriott, 16090 City Walk, Sugar Land from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Khator also serves as chancellor of the UH System, overseeing a four-university organization, including UH, UH-Clear Lake, UH-Downtown and UH-Victoria. The System also includes three branch campuses, UH-Clear Lake Pearland, UH System-Northwest and UH Sugar Land, as well as a UH System at Cinco Ranch, a multi-institution teaching center. The UH

System serves nearly 70,000 students, has an annual budget that exceeds $1.5 billion.

During her tenure as chancellor, the UH System has grown substantially, including expansion of UH-Clear Lake and UH-Victoria

into full four-year institutions. Under her leadership as president, UH has experienced record-breaking research funding, enrollment and private donations.

UH launched its 75-acre Energy Research Park, part of a $1-billion campus construction program, and became a member of the Texas Medical Center. Designated as a Tier One research university by the Carnegie Foundation, UH has also been recognized by the

Sugar Land again has one of the lowest tax rates in the state according to a Texas Municipal League survey of 657 Texas cities. When comparing cities with populations greater than 25,000, Sugar Land’s tax rate of 30.895 cents was the lowest. The report also included the following results for 31 cities with populations of 60,000 to 400,000.

These results of the survey are another

example of the City’s strong economic health, contributing to the public’s continued confidence in the City’s responsible financial stewardship.

The City’s sound fiscal management has resulted in a AAA bond rating from Standard & Poor’s and Fitch, allowing Sugar Land to finance capital improvement projects at competitive rates.

Phase III of LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch will consist of 37,000 sf of retail space, anchored by Trader Joe’s, 36,000 sf of Class A office space and a parking garage.

HOAR Construction will see the

construction of the project. “Eight years ago we began construction on the first phase of LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch. We are thrilled to continue that legacy with Vista Equities as their construction partner on Phase III of LaCenterra,” said Brian Cook, VP of Texas Division - HOAR Construction.

AARP Texas is recognizing the work of State Representative John Zerwas of Richmond by presenting him with a 2013 Legislative Leadership Award.

The award recognizes Representative Zerwas’ leadership on long-term care issues critical to older Texans and their families. He helped increase nursing home reimbursement rates, which have long been one of the lowest in the country and are a cause of high staff turnover and poor quality care.

He also helped secure a wage increase for the community-based attendants who care for frail seniors, bringing the base wage for the

lowest-paid attendants up to $7.86 an hour.

“Thanks to the leadership of Representative John Zerwas, the state budget this time around made significant steps toward improving the

quality care for older Texans who need to be in nursing homes. We applaud his success in protecting these vulnerable Texans,” said Bob Jackson, AARP Texas director.

Child Advocates of Fort Bend County Board Member Kurt Kirchof of Richmond was awarded the Excellence in Governance Board Member of the Year Award by Texas CASA, the statewide network of 71 local Court Appointed Special Advocate programs which recruit, train and support volunteers who speak up in court for children in the foster care system.

“A local CASA program’s board of directors plays a key role in the success of nonprofit organizations. A board member’s official role is to enable an organization to achieve its purpose and protect the public interest by making sure the organization’s resources are spent appropriately,” said Vicki Spriggs, chief executive officer of Texas CASA. “Good board members go beyond that definition, generously contributing their time, talents and resources to the CASA cause.”

Fort Bend ISD board president participates in leadership program

Fort Bend ISD Board President, Jim Rice joined 34 other school board members from across Texas on September 26-28 at the kickoff session of the Leadership TASB Class of 2014. Selected by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), the group is participating in a year-long education leadership study program. These trustees represent school districts of all sizes, with student populations of 161 to 202,000, and reflect a similar range of property wealth.

Participants who complete all required

elements of the study will graduate next year by earning Master Trustee status. This is the highest designation recognized by TASB.

A 14-year sales veteran in the U.S. glass industry, Patterson has been handling architectural accounts in Texas, Louisiana and Mexico for the past seven years while also conducting strategic business development for PPG flat glass in Mexico.

In his new post, Patterson will retain his sales and business development responsibilities in Mexico while expanding his territory to include customers in Central and South America and the Caribbean.

Kennedy’s assassination on November 22, 1963, and the wounding of the late Texas Governor John B. Connally. T he CEO and owner of Mercyfull Home Health Care, Inc., Mercy Grant, makes it clear that the function of the

agency is more than a caring friend for a loved one at home. “It’s about peace of mind knowing that this loved one in need is under the expert care of experienced care givers, whether it is daily or weekly assistance,” explains Grant. Tailor-made services help adults and also seniors, 60 years and up, recover after a hospital or facility stay, or those just needing additional support to remain safely at home and avoid unnecessary hospitalization. “Your health and well being is my passion,” pledges Grant, as she speaks about the patients being served by Mercyfull. Towards this end she came to America from her native home in Nigeria, to pursue a passion of caring and she made it a reality. She became the heartbeat of Mercyfull, when she gave it life so that others could receive comfort and care. Her vision, backed by paying her way through nursing school with assorted jobs and working in the home health industry, brought her to the realization that she needed to have control over the quality of care given to patients.

Today, Grant stands tall as Mercyfull’s creator, and her wish to care for others extends to those out in the field providing the quality of care she envisioned, her staff. At the recent annual dinner banquet held at the Sugar Land Marriott – Town Square on November 15, Mercyfull Home Health took time to pay tribute to the committed employees carefully assembled by Grant. Appropriately entitled “Appreciating Mercyfull Stars, the event recognized the workforce individually, each of them committed and key members of the home health agency’s success, each of them having given their hearts to the profession and to those with whom they work. Pastor Kate Lilly, an administrator from the Pennsylvania sister home health agency, said at the annual function that Mercyfull is about “understanding that people are at their lowest emotional state,” and “every staff (member) is taught to emphasize and give the best of love, comfort and care to the clients.” Their goal, she said, is to put a smile on these faces and fill their hearts with joy. It is the sort of thing that Grant wants, and she received distinguished recognition at the annual event with her sister, Rosemary, who is also central to Mercyfull, doing the honors. Pastor Lilly additionally announced Grant’s business achievement, a Certificate of Congressional Recognition awarded in 2012, by Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee of the 18th Congressional District in Texas. Grant, too, recently received an award for Most Outstanding Business Executive by the Nigerian community in Houston.

At the same time, the person gets to maintain their independence because they are home. Then, a continuum of care is set in motion and remains in place until the services are no longer needed by the patient.

Many times, a caregiver from Mercyfull is the only person a client sees all day. “They wait for you, look forward to the visit to talk and share,” explains Grant.

Facility professionals, who work closely with physicians and family members, plan, review and track progress, and make adjustments to a plan of care. This approach turns out to be optimal as a blueprint for treatment and also provides greater understanding and support for patients and family members.

Mercyfull has almost 60 employees consisting of licensed and unlicensed non-medical personnel such as nurses, physical and occupational therapists, social workers and others, who assist patients. Also as part of the staff are caregivers and care assistants, who may be asked to help with non-medical daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, eating, ambulating, moving a patient to bed, bath or one room to the next, cleaning the home and preparing meals. These caregivers work to support an individual’s needs in concert with other providers, when needed, and help the person with needs stay at home instead of a

Not this year. “He was very excited about that one he received and proudly placed it on top of his TV,” shares Grant. Several days later he died of a heart attack. “That man died happy with that Father’s Day acknowledgement, and we feel grateful to have contributed to his joy.”

It is evident, as Grant maintains that the agency does not function as an inanimate home health agency. “Our services and the culture of our organization personify our being ‘there’ as a daughter, a son, a friend.”

Mercyfull is also equipped to assess a patient’s medication and provide dietary teaching, which complies with Medicare prerequisites, as well. The staff takes vital signs, reminds patients to take medications, and provides other basic assistance needs. The home care services are considered to be hands-on care with home health aide assistants serving in the role of companions and also providing skilled nursing services. “We are not only there in a nursing capacity, but as an active listener...present...and providing personalized care.”

Located in Richmond, Fort Bend’s county seat, Mercyfull, a member of the Texas Association of Home Care, is considered to be central in more ways to this area’s community. It has a substantial patient load ranging from 300 to 600, mostly from all over the county. “We also have patients from surrounding areas, not only Medicare patients, but private insurance patients, too,” explains Grant.

Here, Mercyfull continues to redefine the concept of in-home care. “We care for people every day starting with the patient, involving their family members, counselors and the many others in the health care provider system that impact the patient, who is central as is their care. “This brings to mind a 68 year old,” said Grant, who herself is a licensed registered nurse. As a matter of practice, Mercyfull sends out special occasion cards to clients every year, “and this particular patient received a Father’s Day card from us.” Grant said he told caregivers how he was touched, “with this special card he received on Father’s Day, which we know was endearing to

facility. Typical of the service depends on the patient and includes skilled nursing, speech, physical and occupational therapy and more, in addition to help with small house chores like cleaning, cooking, running errands, doing laundry, home aid from three to five times a week for four hours at a time. This may be short term relief for respite care or it may turn out to be a more permanent care arrangement for a loved one or even oneself. For example, for a particular person who could not be left alone, Mercyfull provided services for three months until the patient was stable after extended wound care.

“What is most important to us is that our home health agency is not just about caring for a cluster of clients, it is about making a difference in the Fort Bend community.” How different is Mercyfull from other home health agencies and what makes them different? “We put our hearts in what we do, patients are not numbers, we see them as one of us.”

So, who calls Mercyfull? “Doctors, we also get referrals from agencies, private insurance companies, hospitals discharging patients, and of course, word of mouth recommendations, and from these, we have continuing referrals.”

Grant affirms Mercyfull’s purpose and states, “We are always there, committed to providing reliable home care for seniors and others in their home, in a hospital, an assisted living facility or a residential care facility.” Should one’s circumstances arise that are a challenge or a loved one may have to consider leaving home for basic or additional care, Mercyfull’s caregivers may turn out to be the perfect solution.

A participating partner in Fort Bend County Fair Day, Mercyfull encourages seniors to attend annually on Senior’s Day. Grant said, “We donate the biggest gift for a raffle and one time, the item was won by a gentleman celebrating his birthday, and that made him very happy; funny thing, the previous year the lady that won was also celebrating her birthday!”

so much friendliness and we always love the warm reception from people. Being here is just something that settles really well with me,” says Grant.

While most of its patients are from Fort Bend, the home health agency’s target market is in other places in Texas, too,

where Mercyfull operates in Nacogdoches, Livingston, Dallas and San Antonio. Out of state, Mercyfull also operates licensed facilities in Philadelphia, New Jersey and California. In each of the cities, Mercyfull is a member of the corresponding Chamber of Commerce and actively participates in community functions.

Future plans for expansion include going global to a rural Nigerian village as the next place to be. Eighty-five percent of people needing health care die before they get to the city. “I am starting a hospital in a very rural area, Victoria, and the effort goes by the name Mercyfull Charity.”

Grant told her 97 year old Dad that she would like to build a hospital, which endeavor she started earlier this year. It will be dedicated and open this December as The Royal Victoria Hospital, a full service hospital with qualified health care professionals and equipment, and other supplies Grant purchased in the U.S. “This is now my charity and I have bought hospital beds with my own money to get everything set up. I am excited and while I feel the pain of people, I also will see their joy knowing the hospital will save lives,” said Grant.

C herry’s Stabilized Materials Division has opened yet another stabilized material plant, giving Cherry a total of

six stabilized facilities in the Greater Houston Area. This newest plant produces stabilized sand and road base material for companies located primarily in Fort Bend County and the Richmond Rosenberg area.

The new state-of-the-art stabilized materials (pug mill) plant, located at 6400 Koeblen Rd., has the largest production capacity of Cherry’s six plants in the Houston area. The plant can produce 800 tons per hour of stabilized sand and road base material. Combined, Cherry’s six stabilized material plants produce more than 250,000 tons of stabilized sand and road base material per month.

Cherry’s new stabilized material plant

is strategically located in the southwest, an area of significant growth primarily due to the Grand Parkway construction. Major customers for the new facility will be residential and commercial underground utility construction contractors.

“We’re excited about opening our new stabilized plant that allows us to expand our services to a new market,” says John Conyer, general manager of Cherry’s Stabilized Materials Division.

Cherry’s other stabilized material plants are located at 9929 Katy Hockley Rd, Katy; 6019 Crawford Rd., Pearland; Beltway 8 and Tanner Rd., Houston; 4410 Dagg Road, Houston; and 5325 County Road 58, Pearland.

Cherry is a recycling and demolition company based in Houston, Texas. With more than 60 years in business, Cherry specializes in the removal of all types of

structures—from highways and bridges, industrial plants and commercial buildings to residences through demolition and other deconstruction techniques.

In addition, Cherry is one of the largest recyclers in Texas and the Gulf Coast. Recycling more than two million tons of concrete and asphalt and thousands of tons of steel every year, Cherry also recycles residential composition asphalt shingles and tires. Recycled concrete and asphalt is re-used primarily in road and highway projects while re-claimed steel ends up in thousands of new metal products.
