MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR/PRESIDENT

December 2012 Dear Parents and Students, In my October letter, I reflected with you on the first of our pastoral goals that aim to help our school community grow in its Salesian mission and identity. This month I want to consider the second of our pastoral goals.

The important word here is community. St. John Bosco was convinced that genuine education of the young takes place within a community, a network of persons united in heart and mind, relating to one another with mutual respect and affection, living a family spirit. It heartens me when recent graduates return to Don Bosco Prep, as they did during the days leading up to Thanksgiving, and speak of their happiness to be back “home” and how they miss their experience of “brotherhood” here. It heartens me when current parents express their appreciation for Don Bosco Prep as more than an educational institution for their sons but also as an authentic “Salesian Family” in which they themselves feel welcome. It heartens me when alumni Moms plan a December mass and social to remain connected, and when alumni Dads return to help cook burgers for a football game. The sense of community and family is quite strong at Don Bosco Prep. For that we can be grateful. But to help it grow further, we need to be intentional. Hence, this pastoral goal, that invites us all to foster those things which lead to unity and avoid those things that cause division. Students, parents, staff, faculty, administrators and Salesians – all of us must do our part to grow our family spirit. Speaking of such, Don Bosco wrote: “Because it is a beautiful thing for people to live together, we must love each other as brothers and sisters, putting up with one another, helping each other, esteeming each other, suffering together.” Very concrete attitudes and actions that are practiced in daily life.

During these Advent days, we await the arrival of God in Jesus. But while waiting, we can prepare a welcome home for Emmanuel – God with us – by fostering unity with one another and charity towards all, in both word and deed. With affection and gratitude,

Father James Heuser, SDB Director/President

and service to others.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

"It might be easy to run away to a monastery, away from the commercialization, the hectic hustle, the demanding family responsibilities of Christmas-time. Then we would have a holy Christmas. But we would forget the lesson of the Incarnation, of the enfleshing of God—the

lesson that we who are followers of Jesus do not run from the secular; rather we try to transform it. It is our mission to make holy the secular aspects of Christmas just as the early Christians baptized the Christmas tree. And we do this by being holy people—kind, patient,

generous, loving, laughing people—no matter how maddening is the Christmas rush…" –Fr. Andrew Greeley

Greetings to all as we enter the hectic Christmas season! I hope this letter finds you well as the days grow shorter, yet with so much more to do. Advent is much like life itself; how much time we spend waiting! As parents, how vividly we remember the hours spent waiting for the first word, the first step, the first tooth, the first day of kindergarten. Now, many of you wait anxiously for the sound of the car pulling in to the driveway late at night and (for Senior parents) word of the next step in your sons’ journeys. Life is always more a journey than a destination! In all of this, however, let us not forget the here and now and not lose sight of the joys of the present. Even in our awaiting the arrival of Christ, we remember that the Spirit is with us always. It is no accident that the symbol of advent is a circular wreath, with light burning at its center. Our annual Christmas Toy Drive is underway; each year we provide a splendid Christmas Party for the schoolchildren of Our Lady of Guadalupe School in Elizabeth. This is a great event, even more so for our boys who participate-please be as generous as you can with sending in toys. We also celebrate the sounds of the season with our annual Christmas Concert on December 11

th at 7:30pm in the DeSales Auditorium-please join us! Also, please

mark your calendar that parent-teacher conferences for the second quarter are schedule for Thursday, December 13

th. This round of conferences runs from 6:30-8:30pm. Finally, we

begin our Christmas holiday this year on Friday, December 21st. The students will have a

Christmas prayer service that morning and will be dismissed at 11:15am. Despite the many events and activities this month, let us always remember to find the sacred in the chaos of the holiday season, and to always recall the most precious gift to humankind- the birth of our Savior. Christmas is an important season, especially for the life of the Church, but also for the life of a school. It is a time to take a well-deserved break from our studies to enjoy time with friends and family. It is a time when we make resolutions for the coming year, whether it is to improve our studies or extend ourselves more to one another. Most of all, it is a time for us to be attentive to the many miracles which surround us each day. Let our holiness come, as Andrew Greeley says, through “being holy people—kind, patient, generous, loving, laughing people—no matter how maddening is the Christmas rush…" Know of my prayers for your family during the holiday season. Know that, despite the many interruptions and “chaos” of the school year, I see the sacredness and miracle of our boys. Your sons are the most wonderful gift you could have given to us, and for that I am grateful. I, too, wait patiently to see what the future brings for all of them; and all the while a light burns at the center of our community. God bless you and Merry Christmas! John Stanczak

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS

I trust that all enjoyed a peaceful Thanksgiving and that you and yours are recovering from the horrific weather that many of us encountered. Please know that everyone here at DBP has had our extended family in our thoughts and prayers. As we approach the Christmas and the Holiday Season, it is not uncommon for us to become distracted and lose sight of some of the responsibilities and obligations that are part of being a student here at “The Prep”. While trying not to play the role of The Grinch, I would like to remind you of some of the handbook rules that we believe need to be re-enforced.

Please remember that no hooded garments are to be worn on campus during the school day. This includes, but is not limited to, the sweatshirt garment commonly known as a “hoodie”. Hooded garments may be worn to and from school but must be removed (and preferably placed in a locker) once homeroom starts. Only Don Bosco approved outerwear (not hooded) may be worn during school hours. Please check with bookstore personnel if you have any questions as to whether a garment may be worn on-campus during school hours.

Please check the Parent/Student Handbook (Agenda) regarding the school “Dress Code” and the

school uniform that must be purchased through Flynn and O’Hara. Students that fail to report in proper uniform, or who are not neatly groomed, are subject to disciplinary action. Please refer to the handbook for further information on this and a number of other student-related is-sues.

Students and parents are reminded that cell phones “may not be turned on, in use or visible during

school hours”.

No student may park on-campus without first obtaining a permit from the Finance Office and, even then, may only park in their assigned space during school hours.

Please be reminded that total absences can add up as a result of being chronically late/tardy. Any

student accumulating greater than fifteen (15) absences in the academic year, regardless of ac-ademic standing, may be subject to summer school.

Please accept my best wishes for a joyous and peaceful Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year. Best Wishes, Ed Nekel

“Don Bosco Has a Student”

December 2012

Dear Parents and Friends of Don Bosco Prep, Three years ago this office wrote to you about some of our boys and their families. Under the heading “Don Bosco Has A Student”, I highlighted the situation of a number of our boys in urgent need. I tried to tell the story of each boy and explain how the difficult “economic times” have personally touched their lives. Sometimes it was not an “economic situation” that brought pain to our boys and their family; some-times it was a “sad medical situation” or a terrible “tragic event” – often touching the hearts of the entire family. These are not boys “in need”; these are boys “in extraordinary dire need”! And it is not an easy message to convey to you. In the end, I asked for your help for these boys – any donation at all toward their tuition. I prayed to God for a good response. You always responded. Your response – I’m sure – depended upon what you could do. In 2009-2010, we raised $83,600.

In 2010-2011, we raised 212,000. In 2011-2012, we raised $84,743 (last year)

For each year (some better than others) we give THANKS to you for your gifts and prayers. And we give PRAISE to God for His Love and motivating of His people. What a grace you are for many boys and their families as the Christmas Season drew near.

* * * * * * * * At this time, I would like to humbly present to you another 10 of our boys who are “in extraordinary dire need”! What I am about to write, I write each year. I will struggle between attempting to give you enough infor-mation to help you understand what some families are facing, and at the same time trying to maintain the family’s anonymity and integrity. I do this in prayer, asking you “Can you please help?” Don Bosco Prep has Student #1. This is a sad situation indeed. Student #1 always wanted to attend Don Bosco Prep – ever since he was in grade-school. He now faces a situation where both parents face life-threatening diseases. No one knows how long either parent has in this life. Aside from his financial need, this boy embraces emotional and social need. He has found much comfort in his classmates, his teachers and the Salesians.

Don Bosco Prep has Student #2. Here is a situation of a boy who loves Don Bosco indeed. Following the death of his father who died several years ago, his mother made it clear to him that she was not concerned with paying a tuition for the boys high school. The boy – along with certain family members and benefactors – have been help-ing him get through Don Bosco Prep. But as a Junior, it’s getting more and more difficult. Don Bosco Prep has Student #3. Here is a boy who would touch anyone’s heart. The boy is a survivor of a dreadful disease. And while he must watch the signs of this disease, he does a magnificent job at Don Bosco Prep. As his medical bills have soared, his mom has returned to school to better herself in order to get a higher-paying job. This boy is hoping to strengthen himself to someday play a sport. Don Bosco Prep has Student #4. This boy is a junior at Don Bosco Prep. About a year ago his father died. His father was the bread-winner of the house. The house soon went into foreclosure. This boy and his 2 siblings took part-time jobs to help at home and to help pay for their tuition. Don Bosco Prep has Student #5. This boy is suffering terribly from the loss of his father who died unexpectedly several months ago. His father was a retired member of a local police department and a strong figure in the home. For this boy, it seemed, that everything fell apart in his life. Don Bosco Prep has Student #6. I came to you the past 2 years mentioning this boy’s situation. I wrote: “you can’t even talk about (this). You just have to trust me. I have a boy in terrible need. Please help.” The situation is about the same. Your response and blessings have been good for this boy. This deserving young man has re-sponded to the “good things” in his life, and it will present a brighter future for him. Please continue to help him. Don Bosco Prep has Student #7. Here is a boy that has just enrolled at Don Bosco. He comes from the inner-city and wanted to be here for a long time. Just a short time after he started class, we received the news that this boy’s mother had died. The boy was emotionally upset. His partially disabled father took a low-paying job to help to fami-ly. Don Bosco Prep has Student #8. The boy has just gone through a terrible and bitter separation of his parents. During the ordeal, his father made clear to him that he would not pay for any tuition for high school, especially DBP. The boy wants so much to be here but often suffers emotionally. Don Bosco Prep has Student #9. This is a family that loves Don Bosco Prep. In the past two years the father has been struggling with a terrible debilitating disease resulting in medical set-backs. This has resulted in financial crisis and the boy fears having to leave Don Bosco Prep.

Page 8: December 2012 Bulletin

8

Don Bosco Prep has Student #10. This is a sad story. Here, the father and son always had a wonderful bond. And it was their joint wish

that the boy would attend Don Bosco Prep. Shortly before registration, the boy’s father died. The mom wished to carry out the wishes of her husband and registered her son at DBP. Without a strong bread-winner it has become difficult. The mom has taken a second job just for this.

Please know that all the above students already receive the maximum allowed financial aid of $3,000 from the school. They are from a pool of students very much in financial need. I have chosen 10 students. I have many other students I could write about. Also, please know that no student is ever dismissed from Don Bosco Prep because of the reasons demonstrated in the narratives above. We do however try to recuperate tuition amounts for budget reasons, to pay our teachers and utility bills. So now, I go back to the question I presented to you in the beginning of this message: “Can you help?” That’s the purpose of this message. And I sincerely Thank You for your attention to this message. If you feel that this letter touches your heart – or maybe just your mind – then perhaps you may wish to help. A donation “in general” or “toward a particular student” would be very much appreci-ated. It is tax exempt, and will remain anonymous unless other arrangements need to be worked out. Simply fill out the form below and return it to the Finance Office.

Thank you. God Bless you and your families abundantly. And please, say a prayer for these boys. Father Jim Marra, SDB, Finance Office

MYTHS ABOUT ASTHMA

Cold air is often directly responsible for asthmatic attacks. With the weather changing, I thought it would be a good time to review MYTHS ABOUT ASTHMA *Asthma is a childhood illness that you will outgrow. Asthma is a chronic illness that many adults have. With proper management, asthma is con-trollable. *Asthma is an emotional problem and you can control it. Stress can make asthma worse, but most attacks are due to allergy or environmental irritants. It can be controlled via reduction of asthmatic triggers and by use of medication. *It’s not asthma, it’s just allergies. Someone with chest tightness, shortness of breath and wheezing probably has asthma. Allergy may play a role in the majority of attacks, but it may be dangerous to just dismiss it as “just al-lergies”. *People with asthma shouldn’t go outside or exercise. We all benefit from exercise and it is essential to feeling good. Cold air can trigger an attack but it can often be prevented with medication. Many professional athletes have asthma and are healthy and highly functional. *Most asthmatic attacks occur without advanced warning. Shortness of breath and changes in peak flow are signs of impending attacks and should be addressed. *Some asthma medications are dangerous and can cause bodily harm. No known permanent damage is associated with taking asthma medication. While some may experience minor discomforts, the health benefits easily outweigh side effects like nausea, irri-tability or sleepiness. *Asthma is a rare illness. In the United States alone, asthma affects over thirteen million adults and seven million chil-dren. *No one dies from asthma. While death from asthma is rare, it does account for approximately 4000 deaths per year. Many are preventable.

If your son has asthma:

I need an Asthma Action Plan on file each new school year. Keep an extra inhaler in Health Office as a backup.
