From the Principal

Dear Johnians and Well-wishers,

We are happy to inform you that the Educational Support Programme for the displaced children has been updated to December 2011. As anticipated, the Programme is progressing with great success and we sincerely thank the old boys and well–wishers. It is your generous help that has enabled us to initiate and continue this Programme successfully. The detailed progress of this Programme is given in the following pages.

728 displaced children have been admitted to the college (344 boarders + 384 day scholars) since the initiation of the project in 2009, including new admissions for the year 2012. To date, 287 children (175 boarders + 112 day scholars) have left school after Grade 10 or A/L to join their own schools or families in the resettlement programme undertaken by the Government.

At present, we have 441 children (163 boarders + 278 day scholars) in the College, all of whom are provided with free meals, accommodation, clothing, study and recreation facilities. The college also provides opportunities for these children to actively participate in all college activities and to pursue their individual interests. An education support programme is also underway to support the children who require additional help in English and other compulsory subjects.

Stage VI of the programme – Educational support to the needy children in the Vanni area, is also in progress with evening classes being held in Tharmapuram, Uduthurai, Shanthapuram and Thaneeruthu at present.

At the moment, we have already progressed so far, but the cry of the needy boys and girls in the up-country remind me there is still much work to be done. In addition to St. John’s, Morbray Girls School in Kandy is also in similar circumstances, with their financial status in much need of support. Given the right sponsorship and attention, I sincerely believe we can continue our progress in both schools concerned, with the start of the Stage VII Program being our immediate goal. This is our next step for the future.

In any case, I once again thank all the old boys and well wishers who have been supporting us throughout this programme. Your generous help has made it possible for these needy children to continue their education, and ensured a bright future for them. We appreciate your support to the college in all its endeavours to maintain its excellence.

Thank you, Sincerely yours,

Rev. N.J.Gnanaponrajah Principal, St. John’s College

A TRIBUTE TO MR. DANIEL JEYAKUMAR THEVATHASON

We remember with great sadness Mr. D.J. Thevathason, who entered glory on the 14th of November 2011. Mr. Thevathason’s association with St. John’s College began as a student in 1956. He left school in 1965 and then joined again as teacher in 31st August 1971. Following this, he served the College as the Head Master of the Primary school from 04th January 1995 to 31st December 2007. He was a conscientious, efficient and a painstaking teacher who took a personal interest in every child under his care. After his retirement, he continued to serve the College as the Welfare officer since November 2009. His caring disposition and dedication made him an excellent choice for this position, and he continued his service with the same dedication and efficiency which marked his career as a teacher and Head Master. He earned the respect, affection and love of both the staff and students during his time at St. John’s, by serving the college faithfully despite suffering from poor health during the latter part of his life. His faith and trust in God was manifested in his life and he had a profound influence on all who came in contact with him. He took a special interest in the welfare of the internally displaced students from Vanni and worked tirelessly to meet their educational and other needs. He was a father figure for many of the children who had lost their parents and families during the war. His concern for those under his care made him work for their well being until the last days of his life. He will be sorely missed by all the staff and students at St. John’s College. We give honour and thanks to the Almighty God for his dedicated life and the great contribution, sacrifice and devotion to the College. Mr. Thevathason will always be remembered with gratitude and love. May his soul rest in Peace. St. John’s Family

Stage VII – Education support to the needy children in up-country

At this moment, we have already progressed so far, but the cry of the needy boys and girls in the up-country remind me there is still much work to be done. This is our next step for the future.

v Comments

It is an excellent idea and we thank God for such thoughtfulness to support the Vanni needy children to go through their education at St. John’s. Mr.& Mrs.V.R.Amarasingham My Best wishes go to you and the staff for the success of the gigantic enterprise that you and the alumni of St. John’s have undertaken. M. Morton Peto. I thank the Lord for placing you all in the administration and for giving you all the vision and faith to undertake this huge commitment of caring for and educating these young people. Ravi Casinader. You are all doing an excellent job to our community. N.Jeyakaran (old boy of JHC) God Bless you for the wonderful work you are doing. Catholic Bishop of Canbera I congratulate you all, and earnestly pray that God will steer you all through a very difficult path way “seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added unto you.” Looking at the pictures of so many little boys in their smart uniforms, the activities of teachers, the well maintained buildings, and the fine gardens gives much hope for the future. Dr.Malati Rajasingham. Thanks for taking care of the IDP kids at St. John’s College. I know earlier days you have to go through some tough times and a lot of challenges to accommodate these kids but today everyone praising about your work and courage. Mr. Hudson Solomons God Bless you for the wonderful work you are doing. Catholic Bishop of Canbera We are very touched to see the kids’ letters and informations. We will appreciate everything that our college is doing for these deserving kids. Wijit & Shorna

I heard that our school is doing great Service the Displaced School Children which is an excellent news & keep it up. Mr. C. H. Rajkumar I would like to thank you all for the great work you are all doing in accommodating the IDP children and for all your assistance during the past year. Nancy Gunaratnam We received a very good feedback from Raj regarding our program at school and specially from the speeches from the boys and once again, we are very pleased the way you are taking care of the children and thank you all for your services rendered to our school. Mr. Vignapalan Thanks for doing a grat job. Mr. Albert W Anandaraj God bless you and your wonderful work. Rev. Eardley Mendis We feel St. John’s College is like a giant tree spreads her cool shady branches to protect her children with enormous love and care and bringing her children higher up as much as possible. We very much respect to all at your school for broaden-up your arms to protect and secure the future for these kids and more importantly keep-up their smiles on these innocent faces. In fact, any war in any country is capable of punishing innocent people regardless of their age, gender, race or the nationality. It is a monster who can destroy anything without any feeling. We share the warmth of love for all children in your care and spreading our loving kindness to all children, other victims affected by any war, as parents, community members at the end as human beings. St. John’s College refreshes our view as guardian angel looking after kids with an effort to open-up many avenues to keep their future brighten. But after hearing an immense love and kindness within the school environment to keep everybody happy and joyful we felt to express our heartfelt appreciation for all of your efforts on this mammoth task. May the school be success in every possible way! Janaki and Sunil
