Miracle in the MakingMiracles dont always take a picture perfect form. For Kimberly, the mere

fact that she will have contact with all six of her children this Christmas is

a miracle. And one she does not take lightly. I hurt those children badly.The things I didnt do hurt them probably more than the things I did.

Kimberlyhadherrstchildat16,marriedhersecondbabys atherat 17

divorcedat18,marriedagainat19,andhadthreemorechildrenbeore

shewas25.Sixmonthsaterherseconddivorceat27,

she became addicted to methamphetamines. She

had hersixthchild at30and lost custodyothe

middlethreebeoresheturned33.Heroldestson

Robert,now22,wasraisedbyhisgrandparents.

Hersecondson,Kelly,20,grewupwithhisdadand

nowhasathree-month-oldbabyohisown,ChloeGavin,8,Kimberlysyoungestchild,liveswithherat

AnnaOgdenHall.

Morgan,16,Mason,14,andMadison,13,live

withtheirather.InthepastyearwhileKimberly

has been in the Womens Recovery Program

atAnnaOgdenHall,shehasbeenworkingto

restoreherrelationshipwiththem.Thejourney

gradual,tentativeandraughtwithpainis

arromover.Butbyallaccounts,theactthat

itishappeningatallisindeedamiracle.

For several Christmases, Kimberly had no

contactatallwithherthreemiddlechildren.It

wasreallyhardonallousbecauseshewouldnt

evencall. It elt like shedidnt care anymore,

Morgansaid,likeshedidntwantanythingtodo

withus.

Mason said his mom has changed since

goingtoAnnaOgdenHall.Shedidnttalktous

orthreeorouryears.Thenshedecidedshejus

wantedtocallandmakeeverythingallright,but

KimsacelitupwithabrightsmilewhenshetalkedaboutChristmaswithher

amilythisyearaarcryromthreeyearsagowhensheturnedEddieawayon

ChristmasEveduetohisaddiction.Then,Eddiewasscrawny,unkempt,andsel-

centered.Notonlydidalltheholidayplanningortheirourchildrenandone

grandchildalltoKim,Eddiewasadragontheestivities.LastChristmaswas

theirrstwithChristatthecenterandEddiecleanandsober.OnChristmasEve,

theamilysnuggledunderapileoblanketstowatchtheNativityStorytogether,

andonChristmasmorning,Eddiedemonstratedaselessloveorhisamily.It

wassoexcitingtoseehimnallybetheatherIalwaysknewhecouldbe.

Weveallseenthepageantswithboysandgirlsdressedintheirdadsbathrobes,

crownsandmakeshitturbanscarryingpiratestreasurechests,bagsopotpourri

andtheirmothersperumebottlesdownthecenteraisleothechurchtolay

nexttoababydollJesus.Ihaveevenheardothewisemensingingrap:...and

truthully/wewereblownaway/byaking/withnobling.Inherstory,TheBest

ChristmasPageantEver,BarbaraRobinsonhasoneothemagibringamuch

morepracticalgitaham. ThisChristmas,Idliketointroduceyoutothreemenwho,atrstglance,

mightseemequallyimprobablewisemen:Therst,Je,grewupinostercare.

Twentyyearsold, herecently re-unitedwithhis biological amilyandquickly

proceededtosteal romthem topayorhis drughabit.Angry that theyhad

rejectedhimlongago,hethought,Idontcare;theyrenothingtome.Butthen

hestartedtoeelguilty.Thatwasntthepersonhewantedtobe,andhemadeawisechoice:hecametotheUnionGospe

Missiontogethelp.Sincecominghere,hehasdevelopedcloserelationshipswithotheryoungmenintheprogram,andhe

hasanewpictureohisuture.

The second,Jedidiah,23,wascouchsurngin themonthsbeorecoming totheMission, hangingoutwithdruggie

riends,partyingeverynight.Jedidiahsaidittookhimamonthinthisenvironmentbeoreheclearlyrealizedhewantedtobe

ontheprogramandturnhisliearound.Hesawthechoicesbeorehim:beadead-beat,drugged-outdadorgetclean,getajob,andhavearelationshipwithhistoddlerson.Hemadethewisechoice.

Finally,meetSam.SamhadstayedattheMissionbeorebutlettocontinuehisalcoholicliestyle.Uponhisreturn,he

wasaskedwhyhewantedtocomeback.Hisanswerwentsomethinglikethis:Im47yearsold.Ivelostmyjob.Ivelostmy

wie.Ivelosteverything.Ineedtogetintotreatment,andIwanttobeinacleanandsoberenvironment.Sammadethe

wisechoicetoreturntoasaeplace.

Themenandwomenwhoarecomingtoourshelterswanttogethelp.Theywanttobeinacleanandsoberenvironment

Accordingtoarecentsurvey,9outo10residentspreeranddesirethespiritualcomponentoeredhere.Theydontwan

simplytoeatandsleepandcontinueintheiraddictions.Theywanttobesetreeromthebondageoalcoholanddrugs.They

wantthehopeoanewliethenewliemadepossiblebythecomingoJesusChrist.

ThisChristmas,yourgitstotheUnionGospelMissionhelptocreateasaehavenormenandwomenmakingthewise

choicetoleaveoldbehaviorsandaddictionsbehindandseekanewbeginning.

xitbeoreitstoolate.

ThepriceoherpastchoicesweighsonKimberly.

OneothemostpainulthingsinmylieisthatIhave

childrenwhosomebodyelsetuckedintobedatnight,

and Ididntgetto kissthemgoodnightorreadthem

storiesorpraywiththemandtellthemIlovedthem.

Thatjustateandateatme,anditmademehatemysel.

Hating hersel, however, only ueled sel-destructive

behavior. Through the Womens Recovery Program,

KimberlyislearningtoacceptGodsunconditionallove,

orgivehersel,andmoveorward.

Thismiracleisinprocess.Timeiscriticaltohealing

and the re-establishment o trust. Each o the threechildrenexpressedtheirappreciationthattheirmomis

ollowingthroughonherpromises.Ishesaysshesgoing

tocall, she calls.Morgan,a cheerleader, appreciates

thathermomhascometoherootballgames,andthis

past year, shehas remembered their birthdays. Each

oneisalsoguardedaboutexpectations.

Someothestushesdone,werenevergoingto

getover,Madisonsaid.

Masontalkedaboutorgiveness:Eventually,were

goingtohavetoorgiveher.Theresnowayaroundthat.

Itjustdependsonhowlongitsgoingtotake.

And Morgandescribed an internal battle:When

shetellsmethatshelovesmeorthatImherworld,I

wanttobelieveit,butasbadasIwantto,Icantbecause

Icanttrusther.Notyet.

Doug, the childrens ather and Kimberlys ex-

husband, is wary. For his childrens sake, he wants

healing,restoration,orgiveness,buthealsowantsto

protectthemromanyurtherpain.HesaidKimberlys

involvementintheWomensRecoveryProgramhasmade

allthedierencetohim.Whenhischildrengotobewith

theirmother,heknowstheyaresae.Theycantalkto

the counselors abouttheirangerand their ear.Heis

thankulorthat,andlikehischildren,heistentatively

hopeul.

Kimberlys hope, on the other hand, is almost

palpable. Her lie is changing, and shes never going

back.Ivebeenworkingwithmycounselorandworking

myprogram hard. Really hard. This Christmas, shes

looking orward to celebrating in some ashion witheachoherchildrenandwiththeextendedamilyshes

createdatAnnaOgdenHall.Christmasisaboutamily

andIblewoursapart.Butallthepiecesarecomingback

together,andIwanttocelebratethatwithallthepeople

Icallamily.

Lietransormationisindeedthemiraculouswork

o God, as is the restoration o broken amilies; but

miraclesdontalwayshappeninamoment.
