With the holiday season approaching, we at Latin PrideMagazine understand that not all of us are particularly“responsible dieters” when it comes to Latin foods during theholidays. That is why we have asked our friends at Latin Healthand Fitness to give us a few tips on how to keep down theweight during these days of festivities. Ramon Salomon,personal trainer and nutrition guide and vice-president of LatinHealth and Fitness gives us the following suggestions:

NNuuttrriittiioonn:: While working out, you must increase yourmetabolism in order to burn all the fat and calories that youwish to. To achieve this you must monitor your intake ofcarbohydrates very closely and choose more complexcarbohydrates instead of starch carbohydrates. Good examplesof complex carbohydrates are stone ground wheat bread, brownrice, wheat pasta, and fruits and vegetables. Fats are also veryimportant to dieting as they provide the body with the properinsulation and energy storage. Excellent examples of fats arenuts, olive oil, nut and seed oils, and vegetable oils.

Keep or Reduce Your InchesHOW TO:

As a rule of thumb, use the followingmeasures during your diet:

Your Weight x .8 = Protein intake per dayCarbohydrates = 100g – 120g per dayFat = 25g – 40g per day

Iremember turning the pages to How theGarcia Girls Lost Their Accents and for thefirst time relating completely to the

characters in the story. These were youngLatinas caught between immigrating to thecement streets of New York and leaving thecountry setting of their home in DominicanRepublic; living in the midst of two realitiesnot really knowing where here ended andthere began. Combining Rock and Roll witha dash of Sazón and meshing the two togetherto form their bicultural reality of being fromboth here and there. In so many ways thiswas me and this was my story and for thatreason I would forever be thankful to JuliaAlvarez for writing it.

After years of writing, Julia published herfirst novel the Garcia Girls in 1991, andbecame a pioneer in writing works thatdirectly relate to the Latino experience.“When I was a young woman there was nosuch thing as multicultural literature,” saysJulia. “That was sociology.” Born in NewYork to Dominican parents and returning tothe island of Quisqueya to live until she wasten, much of Julia’s youth was spent on theisland. Her culture and customs werecompletely Dominican until they moved backto New York in the 1960’s escaping theTrujillo regime. This uprooting and change ofcountry and lifestyle affected Julia as itaffected many other immigrants. It broughther to a new home where nothing was familiarexcept what was left behind. The trial sheand her sisters faced was learning to makesense of their new life in the states with theirold life on the island. This change andchallenge was one of the reasons she became awriter. “When we first arrived in New York itwas before the big wave of Dominicanimmigration,” says Alvarez. “We encounteredso much prejudice. Books were the thing Iturned to where I didn’t find prejudice. They

are a place to learn about each other andlearn that, surprise, surprise, we’re all verysimilar.”

Before publishing her novel, Julia took thelove she had of books and writing and usedthem to teach. She traveled across thecountry with the poetry-in-the-schoolsprograms and later became a high schoolteacher until she moved on to collegeteaching. “Teaching is an immediate way togive back,” says Julia. “Young people keep youhonest and fresh.”

Modest about the extent of her influence,her dedication to teaching and to youth showsher belief in the power of her work. She talksabout how when returning to the Dominicanrepublic to visit after about five years of livingin New York she realized, “Oh my, we don’tbelong here anymore.” A feeling that is sovery real to young people - belonging. Julia’swork as a pioneer in writing novels withLatino characters and bilingual text haveaffected so many and is recognized by variousschool systems with the Garcia Girls being onacademic reading lists throughout the country.

From poetry, to teaching, to writing hershort stories and novels, it seems that Julia’sresumé includes everything that a writer coulddream of. But this Latina’s success doesn’tend there. Her novel, In the Time of theButterflies, based on the story of the Mirabalsisters who were brutally murdered by thedictator Trujillo in Dominican Republicbecause of their underground movementagainst him, gained international attention. Itwas eventually made into a movie with suchknown actors as Salma Hayek, Edward JamesOlmos, and Marc Anthony playing majorroles. November 25th, the day the Mirabalsisters were murdered is now recognized bythe United Nations as International DayAgainst Violence Against Women.

The characters in Julia’s novels are so powerful andcome to life as the pages are turned. Mainly strongLatin women, I had to ask if she thought of herself asa voice for women. “It’s not the main agenda I have to‘Give woman a voice’ “ says Alvarez. “The fact that Iam a woman and came of age before multiculturalliterature meant that the books I read were about greatAmerican male writers. I would ask myself whatwould the woman’s story be?” And with precisionAlvarez presents the stories of strength and tales ofgrowth through the eyes of women.

Aside from including women as her maincharacters, the theme of the history of dictatorship inthe Dominican Republic is also a reoccurring them inher writing. “Let’s face it, we’ve had moredictatorships than we’ve had freely electedgovernments. It’s part of our legacy.” says Alvarez. “Itis part of the people we are. As the saying goes, ‘Thosewho don’t know their history are bound to repeat it.’”

In addition to her success in the States, Alvarez hassucceeded in her beloved Dominican Republic notonly as a voice telling the stories of the Island but alsoas a hand giving back to the country that has given somuch to her. Her newest book, A Cafecito Story, isbased on her grass root work. Along with her husbandshe formed AltaGracia a farm literacy center in themountains of Constanza. “I was there writing anarticle when I met campesinos that were growingcoffee the way it has always been grown under theshade. They had told me how the new, biggercompanies had come and cut all of the trees to growprocessed coffee beans. The cutting of the trees hadresulted in deforestation, part of the reason why weexperienced the extreme flooding a while back.” Sheand her husband bought land and created a farmwhere the people could grow their coffee, only to findthat part of the reason that so many of them wereexperiencing difficulty was because of the highilliteracy rate among them. “We decided to set up aschool and teach them so that they could compete andbecome part of the world that had been so hard onthem. We named it Alta because it is high in themountains and Gracia, meaning grace, where goodthings happen.” Their coffee can be purchased onlineat cafealtagracia.com.

Through her work in the classroom and her successin writing, Julia Alvarez has affected so many peopleand taught so much more than writing. She is a voicetelling the story of the immigrant experience, a womanwho has crossed barriers and a Latina who has broughtpride to her people. She asked, “How do you giveback? If you’re lucky and have had advantages, how doyou try to spread that?” Julia Alvarez has done thatthrough so much of her work. “Stories are not justentertainment,” says Alvarez. “They are tools inunderstanding one’s self and accepting one’s self.”

Origen: El superbo jugador de los Rancheros de

Texas, nació en San Pedro de Macorís,República Dominicana. Es hijo de laseñora Lucrecia Sosa en un hogar quecomparte con 5 hermanos. A la edad de 7años quedó huérfano por parte de padre ydesde entonces tuvo que dedicarse a limpiarzapatos y lavar carros para mantenerse yayudar a su familia. Aunque confiesa quesiempre le gustó el béisbol, empezó a jugarlocuando su hermano mayor se retiró de lapráctica del deporte y le invitó a quesiguiera él en el juego de pelotas.

Pero más que su hermano, quizás lapersona que le dio el respaldo necesario, fuesu primer jefe de trabajo en la factoría decalzado de San Pedro de Macorís, quien lepermitió que dos días a la semana faltara asu trabajo con tal de que no dejara de jugarbéisbol.

El boomerang de su llegada:Aquel muchacho tímido y callado que

jugaba con pelotas de trapos, con piesdescalzo y sin haber comido nadaen el día, llegó al béisbol de pagael 16 de junio de 1989, a laedad de 20 años, después dehaber sido contratado por lasuma de $3,500 dólares. Sileyó bien, dije lo correcto,Samuel Sosa el gran astro ymiembro del CírculoExclusivo de los Seis, fueadquirido por la pírricasuma de $3,500 dólares.

Aunque su actuación engrandes ligas no pasó de ser meraexpectativa con relación a sus verdaderasposibilidades, la confianza puesta en él porel dirigente de los Cachorros de Chicago,dio sus frutos en 1993, cuando se convirtióen el primer jugador de su equipo enalcanzar la cifra de 30 jonrones y 30 basesrobadas en una temporada regular.

Dos años más tarde, en 1995, SammySosa repite la hazaña de lograr el 30-30 tandeseado por cientos de jugadores en grandesligas en todos los tiempos. Además de estosrecords de nuestro Sammy Sosa, él suma asus cualidades como jugador, la

extraordinaria labor ofensiva desplegada alo largo de toda su carrera, la que lo llevo aser líder de bateo por 4 años seguidos y elnúmero uno en carreras empujadas por 5años consecutivos.

Pero como todos, Sammy le debe sucarrera a algo o a alguien; y en suspalabras retomamos el lugar queocupan en su carrera profesional, elamor de sus padres y la idea dehumildad y de decencia que leinfundieron. Pero lo más importante

para él es haber sido tocado por Dios con labendición de ser grande y ser humilde, porser adorado por gentes que ni siquierahablan su lengua o conocen su cultura.

Sammy, el de poco hablar, el muchachotímido que prefirió dar su testimonio sobrela dominicanidad, a través de un bate debéisbol, ha dejado su mensaje a laposteridad con la profundidad de losimple: "... Quiero que se me recuerde nopor la marca que rompa o imponga, sinopor que nunca le causé daño a nadie,porque fui un caballero dentro y fuera delparque de pelota, a lo único que aspiro es allegar al cielo..."

Comparte la misma historia de la mayoría de los comerciantes que emigran a losEstados Unidos en busca del gran sueño americano.

Casada con el Señor Ignacio Méndez y madres de tres niños, Pedro Gustavo, ZoaIzanet y Marlene doña Zoa vino a los Estados Unidos en el año1982 , especialmentea Haverhill, Massachussets lugar en donde ha vivido desde su llegada.

Graduada en Ing. Química, doña Zoa trabajo en los Laboratorios Roldan en laRepublica Dominicana y ocupo por mas de 15 años la posición de Testing Water enla Plan de Tratamiento de Agua de la ciudad de Haverhill.

Se inicio en el mundo del comercio gracias a su hermana Constancia, quien habíahecho un curso de globos y establecieron un negocio desde su casa, para luegoinaugural en el año 1996 la compañía que hoy conocemos como MéndezFlowersloon.

Ni Zoa Méndez ni su hermana Constancia Méndez soñaron con establecer lo quehoy es uno de los negocios mas prospero en Lawrence y orgullo de la comunidad.

Su hermana Constancia vino a los Estados Unidos en el 1993 y es madre de unaniña: Patricia Alexandra (20). Dentro de sus planes esta el poder ayudar a lasparejas que quieren contraer matrimonio simplificando los pasos que se necesitanpara lograr una boda maravillosa.

Tanto Zoa Méndez quien siempre brinda una sonrisa a todos los que la conocen,como su hermana Constancia representan un verdadero ejemplo de lucha ysuperación y son dignas representantes del verdadero Orgullo Latino.

Vilma LoraVilma Lora, Director of Women’s Services at the YWCA of Greater Lawrence, hasbeen an A highly active volunteer in various Greater Lawrence community groupsand coalitions, in 2003, Ms. Lora was named by Mayor Michael Sullivan to theMayor’s Health Task Force (MHTF) for the City of Lawrence. She has co-chairedthis coalition’s Breast Cancer Awareness and Domestic Violence Awareness Monthfor the past five years. Based on her strong leadership and commitment, Ms. Lorawas recently appointed to this entity’s Executive Committee. She is also anactive participant in the Lawrence Diabetes Today Coalition, the Lawrence Men’sHealth Collaborative, the Women’s Health subcommittee of the MHTF, andMassCONECT, a multi-approach research project that aims at eliminating cancerdisparities in the City of Lawrence through a collaboration with Harvard School ofPublic Health and the Mayor’s Health Task Force.

Born in New York, Ms. Lora is the proud product of both Puerto Rican andDominican ethnicity and heritage. An experienced speaker and writer, she haswritten featured articles related to the fields of domestic violence, sexualviolence, and women’s health for local newspapers and magazines, including abreast cancer article for the Latin Pride Magazine in October 2004.

Rolando LoraAfter graduating from Central Catholic High School in 1988, I attended BryantCollege where I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administrationwith a concentration in Finance in 1992.

Upon graduation, I joined Wells Fargo Financial as a credit manager in theirMethuen, MA consumer loan store. From 1994 to 1999 I held different branchmanagement assignments in Chicago, Boston and New York City for Wells FargoFinancial. After seven years I decided to leave and pursue other interests. Iworked for a start up real estate infomediary dot com in Boston managing theirstrategic alliances with their mortgage clients. While I enjoyed my time there mytrue passion was working directly with consumers. Therefore, I rejoined WellsFargo & Co in their mortgage division. From 2001-2006, I was consistently one oftheir top producing managers and also a top producing originator to the First TimeHome Buying segment in the country. After five years, I had an incredibleopportunity to join the Merrimack Valley’s leading mortgage company, NorthfieldTrust Mortgage, now Bank of New England Mortgage.

Mark RiveraNever imagined the path his life would take. Mark Rivera has a beautiful wife anddaughter that are the center of his life.

As a young person growing up in Lawrence MA, Mark Rivera was determined tosucceed. He is the 2nd out of 3 children raised by a single mother. Mark’s fatherwas a pastor for 18 years and the example Mark had as a young child. At thetender ages of 6 and 7 Mark would travel with his father and speak and preach infront of multitudes. From that age Mark knew he wanted to speak and createchange in the lives of those who were willing to listen.

Mark purposed in his heart to dedicate his life to working with youth and youngadults around the country in different capacities with the purpose of developingleadership capabilities in young and aspiring youth, and play a vital role in helpingto change the lives of young people he comes into contact with.

During the last 15 years of his life, his career has centered around lawenforcement, education, ministry, adolescent prevention work, and communityservice.

Mark Rivera has fine tuned his gifts as a very skilled and dynamic motivationalspeaker and trainer. Most recently he has served as the Deputy Director for theDepartment of Youth Services for the State of Massachusetts in Boston, and iscurrently serving as the Special Assistant to the Superintendent for the LawrencePublic Schools.

Yet the greatest accomplishment he is most proud of his is beautiful family. Hislovely wife (Someris) who has been the greatest support he could ever ask for andtheir 2 daughters Alyssa and Sophia Rivera.

Michell FerminMichel empezó su carrera en el Mercado de bienes raices a muy temprana edad ysin proponerselo se ha convertido en una de las mas influyentes Latinas en elmundo del Real Estate. Nacida en Lawrence esta joven ha convertido su oficio enuna passion que la impulsa a ayudar diariamente a cientos de familia a alcanzarel sueno Americano y a otros cientos a no peder sus viviendas.

Todo empezo cuando su madre se propuso comprar una casa y solicito de ella aunmuy joven su ayuda, Michell indago todo el proceso y los tramites que senecesitaban y en ese instante quedo fascinada con lo que hoy es su carrera.

Luchadora incansable, mujer tenaz y soporte principal de las mayorias de losmedios de comunicacion Latinos en Massachusetts Michel Fermin es un verdaderoejemplo de laboriosidad.

Julia PolancoEs la directora de una de las organizaciones de servicio a la comunidad masimportante de la ciudad de Lawrence y siempre ha estado comprometida aayudar a los miles de hombrees y mujeres que por circunstancia de la vida sufrenla crisis económica que vive los Estados Unidos y por consiguiente la ciudad deLawrence, nos referimos a la organización “Food For the World.”

Esta lider comunitaria es el vivo ejemplo de dedicacion, ya que a traves de “FoodFor The World” son muchas las familias de bajos ingresos y desempleadas quereciben ayuda de alimentos cada semana en sus instalaciones.

Minerva ha sido responsable por el descubrimiento de muchos canceres en mujeresen nuestra comunidad. Con gran dedicación, humildad yhumanidad, Minerva dedica gran parte de su tiempo a asegurarse deque las mujeres que servimos a través de nuestro programa reciban un apoyoincondicional durante todo el proceso de detección, diagnostico y tratamiento.

Ella también ha luchado y ha abogado con gran fervor para conseguirle los recursosnecesarios a mujeres que están/han estado bajo tratamiento para el cáncer, lo cualvan desde alimentos, transportación, pelucas y próstesis hasta cobertura medica yrecursos financieros.

ontrary to the vibrant person seen weekly on the hit show,“Sabado Gigante,” the very popular Don Francisco responds in adeep and quiet voice to the interview questions over the phone.“In real life, people aren’t the same as they are on television,” hestates after I comment on the difference between the person I’vegrown up watching and how he is during the interview. “It’s justone’s television personality.” At first it was odd listening to himspeak because after watching the show for over ten years, I reallyfelt like I knew who he was. Yet it was refreshing to get a chanceto meet the real Don Francisco.

Born in 1940 the Chilean Don Francisco whose actual name isMario Kreutzberger came from a German Jewish family. Hisparents moved to Chile fleeing Nazi persecution. Little did theyknow the success that their son would become throughout LatinAmerica.

As a young man Mario Kreutzberger had originally wanted tobe a tailor and came to the United States to study for thatprofession. During this time, he fell in love with television acommodity that had not yet reached the masses in Chile. Hedesigned men’s clothes from 1959 to 1961 and eventually decidedto go into the career of television at a time in Chile when themarket was still owned by the Catholic universities and notallowed in private hands.

Kreutzberger began a T.V. show called “Sabados Gigantes”where he used many of the formulas he had seen on popularAmerican talk shows and adapted them to the Chilean audience.The show was a hit and Kreutzberger became a household name inhis native Chile. It has remained the #1 show in Chile for thepast 40 years. He also started a telethon to raise money fordisabled children, similar to the American version of Jerry Lewis’“Jerry’s Kids,” that ended up also being a success and adopted by16 other Latin American countries.

Eventually, Kreutzberger’s success and his curiosity brought himto the States in 1985 searching for another avenue for his show. “Ibelieved my show was something that could be for otheraudiences,” said Kreutzberger. “I began ‘Sabado Gigante’ onChannel 13, a local station in Miami and had an audience thatwas 80% Cuban.” The show was a hit and became so successfulthat in 1987 it became national. In the five years that followedtelevision companies from throughout Latin America, includingSpain, bought the show, making Don Francisco a household namethroughout Latino households.

It is estimated that 99 percent of Latinos know who DonFrancisco is. He is now also producing a new one hour show onSundays called “Don Francisco Presenta” that has increased hisnumber of viewers.

“Sabado Gigante” began as a three hour long variety show thatwas eventually extended to four hours because of its immensepopularity. It includes contests, comedy, interviews and a sectioncalled “Camara Viajera” (a traveling camera portion of the show)that brought Don Francisco to over 185 countries throughout theworld. He has interviewed such a large number of successfulartists and musicians that to name even a short list of them wouldnot suffice. Many up and coming artists who were presented on

his show eventually became huge successes as well.Because of his own success and that of both of hisshows, the one in the United States and his originalshow in Chile, he continued flying weekly from Miamito Chile to tape for both programs. After well over adecade of this hectic schedule he has turned over thehosting of “Sabados Gigantes” in Chile to his daughterViviana.

After years in the television industry, Kreutzbergerhas now moved into the music industry as well. “I justlaunched my record with Norteño Records, it includesMexican artists such as Jenny Rivera and DiegoMartinez,” said Kreutzberger. “I acted as both acomposer of the lyrics and as a producer of the musicon the album.” He’s produced a number of albums ofhis own as well with the recent release of his sixthentitled, “Homenage Gigante a la Musica Norteña”where he covers many original Mexican classics.

For a man with so much success, the question wasobvious, “what could his most accomplished momentin life be?” “There have been so many,” he answered.“The production we had celebrating 40 years of theshow Sabados Gigantes was one of them. It was one ofthe biggest productions I have been a part of.” He alsoadded, “Of my artistic life, receiving a star inHollywood,” as a momentous occasion. He includedtwo other important events, one of which was receiving

a declaration from Pope John Paul II and receiving adeclaration from the Chilean government. After somany years of accomplishments and internationalsuccess, he is very aware and grateful to his Chileanbackground and his Chilean public as the center of hissuccess.

When asked when he would retire from thisbusiness he answered, “When I’m a senior citizen andI’m no longer able to perform because of my health orbecause my mind is not right.” Then he added, “But Idon’t think that will happen. There’s always somethingnew to do.” After so many years entertaining audiencesthroughout the world, Don Fransisco continues to findways to perform and in the end entertain. He said,

“I’M DOING WHAT I LOVE TO DO.I’VE BEEN INVOLVED IN THISBUSINESS SINCE I WAS 22 ANDTHROUGHOUT THAT TIME I’VE HADMANY SUCCESSES AND MANYFAILURES.”But of course, from this point of view, the successeshave well outdone the failures. For that reason MarioKreutzberger, our very beloved Don Francisco, remainsas a true essence of Latin Pride.
