THE “O ANTIPHONS” OF ADVENT

The first sixteen days of Advent mix two distinct themes in the prayers, readings and songs of the Latin Rite liturgy which we celebrate. They are expectation and preparation for the Second Coming of Christ at the end of time, and to a lesser extent, expectation and preparation for the celebration of Christ’s Birth. This dual theme suddenly changes on December 17. Since the Solemnity of Christmas is very near, the readings and prayers of the liturgy now focus almost exclusively on the prophecies which anticipated the Birth of the Messiah, and the events that immediately preceded it. One of the ways she has done this since at least the eighth century is by chanting at Evening Prayer the so-called “O Antiphon” of each of the seven days leading up to Christmas Eve. It is sung before and after the Canticle of Mary, which St. Luke recorded her singing when she visited her elderly cousin Elizabeth, who was pregnant with John the Baptist. Today the O Antiphons are also sung each of the seven days before proclaiming the Gospel at Mass.

An antiphon is a brief verse, usually taken from Scripture, which is said or chanted before and after the Psalms of the Liturgy of the Hours, and at Mass during the Entrance and Communion processions, unless a hymn is, in my opinion, unfortunately substituted. The O Antiphons of Advent include a title of the Messiah which is gleaned from Old Testament prophecy. Today they are often sung throughout Advent in the well-known hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.” I would love to preach on each one of them...As a matter of fact, I think I will! A little longer meditation on the first antiphon, since December 17 is a Sunday, and a shorter one at the daily Masses this week. I print them here for your personal consideration in prayer. O Come, Lord Jesus, Come!

-- Father Scott

December 17

O Wisdom of our God Most High, guiding creation with power and love: come to teach us the path of knowledge! December 18

O Leader of the House of Israel, giver of the Law to Moses on Sinai: come to rescue us with your mighty power! December 19

O Root of Jesse’s stem, sign of God’s love for all his people: come to save us without delay! December 20

O Key of David, opening the gates of God’s eternal Kingdom: come and free the prisoners of darkness!

December 21

O Radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light, sun of justice: come and shine on those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death.

December 22

O King of all nations and keystone of the Church: come and save man, whom you formed from the dust! December 23

O Emmanuel, our King and Giver of Law: come to save us, Lord our God

Live the Liturgy

John the Baptist came to testify to the light, who is Jesus Christ. Like John, we are called to testify to that same Light. We do so by living lives of faith and bringing the joy of the Gospel to everyone we meet. We are people of joy who rejoice at his birth and eagerly await his coming again. We share that joy by tending to the needs of the poor, helping those who are broken, and witnessing to the freedom that a life in God brings. May we take our task of being joyful witnesses to the good news seriously as the celebration of Christ’s birth fast approaches.

Questions of the Week

John 1:6-8, 19-28: Why do you think the religious leaders of the day were confused about the identity of John the Baptist?

Isaiah 61:1-2a, 10-11: We hear in today’s reading the call of Isaiah in his own words and his personal reflection: “In my God is the joy of my soul.” Who do you know that experiences God on this level?

1 Thessalonians 5:16-24: Paul offers these closing remarks to the Christians in Thessalonica. What instructions does he provide to them to prepare “for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ”?

CHRISTMAS SCHEDULE

The 2018 Annual Parish Appeal is underway. Our goal is $150,000. In the first six weeks of the 2018 Ap-peal two hundred and eight (208) of our parishioners have pledged more than $58,000 of which $34,500 has been received. Thank you for the great start. This money will provide for the upgrade of the HVAC system in the Church and Parish Life Center, improve the church sound system, including hearing assist devices, and im-prove use of electronic media in support of parish communications. Please complete the Intention Card you received in your letter from Father Scott and place it in the envelope in the collection basket or mail the envelope to the Parish Office Or, you may use the Parish Appeal envelope from your packet of envelopes to make your dona-tion. The Finance Council and Fa-ther Scott thank you for your gen-erosity.

We are very pleased that our E-giving over the past four months has increased more than 8%. The collection income through Novem-ber for the fiscal year was more than $37,000 below our budgeted amount. Our beloved church with the associated facilities is almost 16 years old. As in your home, maintenance costs and operating costs need to be addressed. You have demonstrated your generosi-ty to enable us to fulfill our fiscal responsibilities. Please continue to be as generous as you can.

SAINT SPOTLIGHT

ST. PETER CANISIUS Feast Day: December 21st

Saint Peter Canisius was a Dutch Jesuit catechist and missionary. He became the leading voice in the coun-ter-reformation in Germany in the 1500’s. He orga-nized the German Jesuit province and founded several colleges. At 70, Peter suffered a paralytic seizure, but he continued to preach and write with the aid of a sec-retary, until his death in his hometown of Nijmegen, Netherlands on December 21, 1597. St. Peter Canisius was known as the “Second Apostle of Germany”.

ST. JOHN OF KANTY, PRIEST Feast Day: December 23rd

Saint John of Kanty was a dean of philosophy and pro-fessor of theology at the University of Cracow. Noted for his austerity, humility, and charity toward the poor. He died in 1473 and is the patron of Poland.

Quote: “Fight all error, but do it with good humor, patience, kindness, and love. Harshness will dam-age your own soul and spoil the best cause.”

Prayer for a Culture of Life

Lord, You created men and wom-en in Your image and endowed them with Your dignity. You call

each of us to be agents of your justice and mercy in the world. Help us to build a culture of life—a culture that

holds all human life in reverence, from the unborn child and the immigrant, to the poor, the homeless, the infirm and the elderly. Give us the character to live the Gos-pel not just with our words, but with our hearts and our actions. Make us quick to forgive each other, quick to listen to each other and eager to serve those who are suffering and in need. And finally Lord, in all things, fill us with the courage to follow St. Paul when he urges us to “speak the truth in love.” We ask this trusting in Your goodness and in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ.

Amen.
