Second Sunday of Advent

John the Baptist was the son of Zechariah, and Zechariah was a Temple priest. Since the priesthood was passed from father to son, we must assume that whatever John was doing in the desert (where we meet him eve-ry Advent), it had something to do with Temple and sacrifice. When people came to the Jerusalem Temple, they were seeking the remission of their sins through the sacrificial mediation of the priests, but before they could enter the precincts of the Temple, they were obliged to un-dergo a ritual washing called a mikvah. Can we appreciate both of these fea-tures in John’s characteristic activity of baptizing? He was drawing his fol-lowers through a purifying bath and then promising them forgiveness. But how would the forgiveness happen? In Mark’s Gospel, John says, One mightier than I is coming after me. . . I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit (1:7-8). And in John’s Gos-pel, the Baptist cries, Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. (1:29). These two statements are functionally equivalent. John the Baptist was preparing Israel for the arrival of the definitive priest, who would perform the final sacrifice by which sins would be wiped away. His water-baptism was in anticipation of a fiery immersion by which Israel would be eschatologically purified. It is worth noting that all four Gospels compel us to approach Jesus through John the Baptist. All four Evangelists realize that we won’t under-stand what Jesus is doing and what he means without the interpretive key provided by this strange desert prophet. Bishop Robert Barron

The Lord is Near

“The Lord is near,” the Apostle Paul tells us, and nothing should per-turb us. He is close by. He is not alone but is with his Mother, She said to St. Jaun Diego: “Why are you afraid? Am I not here who am your Mother?” He is near. He and his Mother. The greatest mercy lies in his being in our midst, in our being in his presence and company. He walks, with us, he shows us the path of love, he lifts us up when we fall and with such tenderness he supports us in our labors, he accompanies us in every circumstance of life. He opens our eyes to see our wretchedness and that of the world, but at the same time he fills us with hope. Pope Francis

Advent Presentation: Dec 10, Dec 17 @ 3:00-4:00 PM, St. Teresa

WHY WOULD ANYONE BECOME CATHOLIC? Why would successful, intelligent people give up their careers, alienate their friends, and cause havoc in their families. . . to become Catholic? Come & listen to their stories.

A man who thought he was John the Baptist was disturbing the neighborhood. So, for public safety, he was forcefully taken to the psychiatric ward of a hospital. He was put in a room with another crazy patient. He immediately began his routine, “I am John the Bap-tist! The Lord has sent me as the forerunner of Christ the Messiah!” The other guy looked at him and declared, “I am the Lord your God.

What has most filled me with hope during this Advent season?
