Passing of the Peace:The gesture is simple, but the meaning isprofound. When weextend our hand toanother, we identifywith Jesus, whoextended his life to thepoint of death to makepeace with humanity(Col. 1:20-21). What’smore, in the midst ofdivisions we symbolizeour unity throughhandshakes and hugs(Eph. 2:14-21). Likewise, when weregularly pass the peacewe practice God’s call tomake every effort tomaintain the bond ofpeace (Eph. 4:3).

Hymn: This text adaptspart of a traditional Irishprayer associated withSt. Patrick (see also no.6). Such a prayer forprotection is known as alorica, from a Latin wordfor “breastplate” or“armor.” It is set to aGaelic melody thatgained wide popularityin the 1970s.

RESPONDING TO THE WORD

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed Rev. Alex RodgersI believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus

Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of theVirgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; hedescended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended intoheaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence heshall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holycatholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection ofthe body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP(Please sign and pass the Ritual of Friendship Register at this time

so that we might know your concerns and keep you informedabout the life and ministry of this community of faith.)

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE and THE LORD’S PRAYER Dr. SpeedOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy

will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; andforgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, butdeliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

PRESENTATION OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS Rev. Rodgers ANTHEM I Sing th’ Almighty Power of God English melody

Chancel Choir arr. Austin LovelaceI sing th’ Almighty power of God, That made the mountains rise; That spread the flowing seasabroad, And built the lofty skies. I sing the wisdom that ordained The sun to rule the day; Themoon shines full at his command, And all the stars obey. I sing the goodness of the LORD, Thatfilled the earth with food; He formed the creatures with his word, And then pronounced themgood. LORD, how thy wonders are displayed where’er I turn my eye: If I survey the ground Itread, Or gaze upon the sky. There’s not a plant or flower below But makes thy glories known; And clouds arise, and tempests blow, By order from thy throne; While all that borrows life fromthee Is ever in thy care, And everywhere that we can be, Thou, God, art present there.

[Isaac Watts]
