DECA Diversified
Hello everyone! My name is Abigail
Baah and I am your 2011-2012
President of Competition. I would like
to welcome our new and returning
members to the most prestigious
international association of
marketing students – cheers to that!
National DECA is encouraging all
members to aspire higher this year.
Claire Coker, our National DECA
President, reminds students in the
September issue of DECA Dimensions
that “the obstacles we face in life
are hurdles that force us to aspire
higher and achieve greatly.”

Welcome to DECA This year we are aspiring to succeed in
developing academically prepared,
community oriented, professionally
responsible, experienced leaders here at
Jackson. Competition is a significant part
of participating in DECA. This year we are
a member of Area 2, and will be
competing at the Area competition
alongside twelve other schools. If you
place at Area, you will transition on to
State and possibly Nationals. I want to
encourage everyone to compete this
year as we continue to aspire higher for
our chapter. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Best wishes,
Abigail Baah
President of Competition

DECA WEEK 2011 As a chapter DECA week was a great turn out! So many people
participated each day, and learned even more about DECA. During
DECA week we went to the ropes course, and I felt that for the
members that attended we really learned a lot about working as a
team (our chapter). It was so nice to see so many people wear their
blue shirts on Monday to kick off DECA week with a bang! Go to the
ropes course and particpate at minute to win it on Tuesday. And on
Wednesday seeing everyone dressed up so nice really showed
peoples commitment to their class and DECA. On Friday when we
made the posters in class, everyone participated and showed their
knowledge of DECA, and even learned more! Overall DECA week 2011
was a huge success!

Octoberfest
Octoberfest is held at Henry M. Jackson High School before or on
Halloween every year. Jackson students come together to create a
safe and fun experience for members of our community. This year,
DECA successfully stood out from the other booths sporting our pin
the tail on the cat, graveyard golf, and more! Thank you to
everyone that volunteered! To view more pictures and stay in the
loop, add us on Facebook!

Going to DECA Nationals (ICDC) was
a once in a lifetime opportunity!
Although the project my partner and I
worked on didn’t quite qualify for
Nationals, I was still fortunate enough
to be offered the chance to
participate in a Leadership Academy
there. In March of 2011, I attended the
ICDC in Orlando, Florida. For me, one
of the most exciting things about
Nationals was meeting so many
people from different states that I
never would have had the
opportunity to meet otherwise. In
Leadership Academy, we were put
into groups of six people who would
be our groups for the entire academy.
All the people in the academy were
divided into “color teams” with
probably 200 people on each team.
In my group there were students from
Michigan, Massachusetts, and
California. It was really enlightening to
learn about the differences between
those states and Washington and
about how their DECA chapters were
different from ours. During Leadership
Academy, we spent our time doing
various events and competitions.
During some of the competitions
between color teams, the energy in
the room was crazy; it was a level of
energy I had never felt before! Being
in that kind of environment was
actually life-changing. Outside of the
competitions and academies, we got
to do a lot of other entertaining things
with all the Jackson DECA members.
We were lucky enough to spend a
few days at Disneyworld and Orlando
Studios, and both of those places
were so much fun! Although there is
definitely a lot of work required to be
able to participate in Nationals, I think
that everyone involved would agree
that it is worth it in the end!

Nationals – where our dreams
came true! Orlando, Florida 2011 YOU CAN MAKE IT TO NATIONALS, TOO. Passion. Hard work.
Dedication. Every year, we are given the opportunity to compete
in a sundry of events, all with one goal in mind: Nationals.
Danielle Zehr shares her experience.
