There will be a recep- tion at 5:00 p.m. The ceremony will follow at 6:00 p.m. Officials being sworn in are the new Gowrie Mayor, Gayle Redman, and two City Council members, Joe Harrrison and Keith Streit.  The Gowrie City Council considered a modest agenda in under an hour the evening of Monday Decem- ber 21, 2015. First on the agenda was a brief report from the police department. It was reported that use of a trail camera has been implemented, and more may be added, but they would like to see how this works before more are added. It was reported that Andy Pebbles has been hired by the department, and John Garidson is serving as a reserve of- ficer.  The council was approached by a group of in- dividuals wanting to add a BBQ feed and BBQ contest to this summer’s Fourth of July festivities. The Webster County BBQ association proposes the establishment of 19 teams each vying for the title of “best BBQ.” Additionally, it was proposed that a “Battle of the Bands” as well as a beer garden should be introduced as well. It was proposed that these festivities be offered later in the day (3 P.M. or 4 P.M.) so as not to interfere with church dining events and other small businesses. It was suggested that the swimming pool park- ing lot may be utilized for these events, but it was noted that the area would need to be roped off. Alternative lo- cations, such as Brockett Park and the high school park- ing lot, were discussed, but it seemed the consensus that the area near the car show represented the prime location for this venue. Additionally, it was noted that an event promot- ing alcohol could not be operated on school property. Mayor-elect, Gayle Redman, suggested the interested parties take up further planning with the GDC, rather than returning to the city council, as they are more apt to be able to assist with these festivities.  “You have our permission to plan,” suggested councilmember, Jeff Peterson.  “I think it’s a great idea,” offered councilperson, Joe Harrison. “Also, if you need a taste tester, I’m avail- able.”  Ash trees in Gowrie  Moving onto new business, the fate of the city’s Ash trees was discussed. “At some time we need to get rid of them [the Ash trees],” offered Jeff Strutzenberg.  It was noted that half of the trees on Gowrie’s golf course are Ash trees. Additionally, the Gowrie City Park has a number of Ash trees in need of removal, espe- cially on the east side of the park adjacent to the power lines. The cost of tree removal is dependent on the size of the tree. A councilmember suggested that Gowrie does have a Tree Board, and this board is to be made up of eight people including one councilmember. Currently, Gowrie lists six members as occupying board seats, but it was noted that realistically, the board is made of four active members at this time.  “I believe it is the responsibility of the board, rather than the city council, as to the fate of these trees,” said Redman.  Flags in Gowrie  Next, it was noted that many flags in our city are due for replacement. “It’s a disgrace to fly many of these flags in the condition they are in,” said Strutzenberg. Supporting one another is blessing in our towns. . .

We are concluding the year 2015 and we are alllooking forward to 2016. Happy New Year to everyone!  We were blessed to live in southern WebsterCounty this past year. The world and our nation expe-rienced some horrifying events and thankfully our smalltown environment was much safer.  To be sure there were also some tragic events inour respective communities. In our communities we allknow each other and we receive so much support fromone another. This is a great feeling.  We should express our gratitude and deep ap-preciation to all our men and women who protect us inthe branches of our military. We have had several menand women serve from our county and area. We expressour deepest thanks.

May our churches, schools, leaders and our localcitizenry be truly blessed this coming year.  Let’s all work together to help one another suc-ceed and prosper in 2016!

otion.Flooding  Next, the council discussed areas of floodingin the community. It was noted that the NE corner ofLincoln and Pleasant (near the sale barn) is in need ofattention.

Additionally, the north ends of both Park andRiddle Streets do not drain properly in heavy rains. Itwas noted the city tried to work out a plan to drain in thedirection of the berry bushes on the west end of town, butthis has not worked out.  “The original developer did a subpar job,” sug-gested Mayor Dave Stokesbary.  It was noted the city has been receiving a num-ber of complaints regarding this issue. 4 THE GOWRIE NEWSTHE GOWRIE NEWS

The Saturday before Christmas a “few” of myclan gathered to celebrate the season and one another. My son number 3, Andy and wife, Reva, opened theirhome to what became a joyful chaos. The temperaturewas very tolerable for December and no precipitation wasmaking its appearance. My granddaughter in law pickedme up and then we went back to their house to pick two ofthe three great grandchildren from that household; grand-son being in the parcel business has been putting in daysof twelve hours plus and his son #1 working many hoursalso so they opted out, due to exhausted necessity, notto attend the festivities. We were near the first to arriveso set about helping to set out Styrofoam plates, plasticcups and “silverware” and the snacking items. While wewere doing that we heard the arrival of another group andthey came on back to the kitchen/serving area. It wasmy oldest grandson, Joe, and his clan. I had expected hisdaughter and youngest son but then I looked up to see atall young man approach me with a big hug and a “Hi,Grandma Sara!” It was Tyler, Joe’s oldest, on leave fromthe Navy. Now I understood why his Mom had said notto send him a package a she “could send it free”. Thenthere was another guest, Tyler’s sister’s “fella”, a delight-ful young man from Lebanon and he became more en-dearing to me when he came back for more of my maca-roni/pea salad declaring, “I love it”.  Little by little more children, grandchildren andgreat grandchildren arrived. Food kept appearing andoverflowing from the kitchen serving island to the diningtable and the nibbling was on parade. My oldest greatgranddaughter came with her fiance (they were engagedthis summer) so at least two people were being indoctri-nated into the clan. We ate some more, told more tales, ate something else, and the last to trickle in was youngestdaughter and her family, three daughters and spouses andgrandchildren. Her hubby was one with a prior commit-ment.

Eating finally dwindled to an almost cessationso it was time to gather the greats around the Christmastree. The older ones were not jumping up and down excitedbut the littler ones were a different matter. est on Dec. 23) to 23 as of the 21st? You get big socksand do something crazy like putting five dollar coins ina smallr sock and put it in the toe. Then you put in a pegpuzzle, various ones randomly, and oh, yes, everyone canhave fun with a yo-yo and if you are one of the veryyoungest you get an extra puzzle, little car or a doll. Ofcourse! Can’t forget the candy but then there’s the onethe big ones anticipate – the envelope. Somehow the par-ents managed to help the little ones keep all their “loot”separated and reclaimed and they didn’t have to worrymuch about the candy – even after having made severaltrips the homemade goody tray on the dining table. Butwoe to a Grandma not expecting a boyfriend to be in at-tendance, though he was most certainly welcomed – butthen Grandma’s pockets still had a bit of depth to com-pensate. Oh, yes, Santa left a bag under the tree and in itwas a back scratcher for everyone who didn’t get a sock.  Once the socks had been reclaimed and refilledit was picture time. With a bunch of around 38 peoplethat can be chaotic fun too -- and it was. It was a greatparty, a loving party, a memorable one. We only wishedthe others could have been there, including the “out westones”. The house would have really been bulging with51 people. And I am an ONLY child! This is certainly agreat memory for me and I hope when they are my age itwill be special to them too.  That all brought back my sock hanging days.We didn’t have fancy store bought ones 70+ years ago –you just hung up a clean long brown cotton winter sock.On Christmas morning it may hold the winter rarity of an orange or a big apple, a few peanuts in the shell anda peppermint stick – don’t remember canes until I wasfilling my kids’ socks. All, in all I hope everyone had a happy, family filled, fun, blessed Christmas – more next week. SMCH Employees...  Employees of Stewart Memorial Community Hospital stand together and recently unveiled new mission and vi-sion statements which summarize the hospital’s goals and objectives.

Stewart Memorial Community Hospital(SMCH) recently unveiled new mission and vision state-

ents which summarize the hospital’s goals and objec-tives. Every three years, the administrative team, board of directors, and medical staff re-examine the orga-nization’s long-term goals. The first step was conductinga community needs assessment to collect data about whatthe public needs from SMCH, McCrary Rost Clinic andCommunity Pharmacy.

The team then met in September at a strategicplanning retreat. “This was no small task. We worked on aSWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats)analysis of our organization. We reviewed where we aretoday and identified strategic challenges and opportuni-

ties,” recalls SMCH CEO Heather Cain. “We identifiedour top priorities and action steps for the next three yearsand drafted our new mission and vision statements. Thesewill help guide decisions in a meaningful way for the nextthree years.”

A mission statement focuses on the present, de-fining the purpose and primary objective of the hospital.SMCH’s new mission statement is “Committed to qual-ity health and wellness for you and your family.” “The

key words here are health and wellness,” says Cain. “Wewant to help everyone we serve lead a higher quality oflife.”  A vision statement looks to the future and is asource of inspiration and motivation. It describes howSMCH hopes to effect change. As it looks to the futureof healthcare, SMCH seeks to “Transform our communi-ties by providing coordinated care and exceptional ex-periences.” Cain explains, “Our communities consist notonly of our patients, but also our employees and medicalproviders. We want to be an exceptional place to workand practice medicine and to give our patients an amaz-ing experience when they use our services. At SMCH, weare driven to be more community-focused, proactive and

engaged.”  With the mission and vision statements top ofmind, the team also identified three top priorities for theorganization. The first priority is to recruit and retainhigh performing providers and staff. Efforts will be madetoward provider and employee talent management andimplementing a competitive total rewards program. Thesecond priority will be to build the new care model toimprove quality, efficiency and coordination. SMCH willwork toward this goal by ensuring quality throughout theorganization, develop a team-based practice and coordi-nation of care and service. The third priority is to build aunity culture and educate the community on who SMCHis. This will be achieved through education for employeesand the community, and for the current organization tobe viewed as one organization versus separate hospital, clinic and pharmacy.  “Healthcare is changing in that reimbursementis going toward a quality, rather than quantity, model. While SMCH is currently not being reimbursed that way,we are looking to the future to provide health care thatimproves the quality of life for our communities. Wewish to be transparent about the direction our organiza-tion is heading so the communities we serve will supportus and be fully engaged,” concludes Cain.  For more information about Stewart MemorialCommunity Hospital and the services it provides, pleasevisit them at www.stewartmemorial.org.
