I innocently wanted to transfer some of my photos and videos off of my BlackBerry Torch 9800. I plugged my USB cable into the Dell Insperion Laptop with Windows 7. The laptop detected that I had plugged in a device, and deduced that it was my Black-Berry and so launced the “BlackBerry Desktop Sofware” application.

The “BlackBerry Desktop Sofware” application, once launched, was set to automatically check for it’s own software updates. It found that there was indeed an update, and immediately began downloading its own software. Meanwhile, the phone was in the process of updating itself. The laptop updated itself before the phone, and demanded that it be “restarted.” Should I have known better? How? It was the end of my Black-Berry experience.

The following is a transcript of the online technical support attempt that culminated in the purchase of a Samsung SGH-a777

At this point I used my land-line to call the 800 number. I explained the situation and the represen-tative tried to transfer me to Research In Motion (RIM) for tech support. I was on hold for several minutes. I nally hung up the phone and went to the local AT&T store. The sales person was about to try everything I had already attempted, but luckily I printed out my chat session and accompany-ing documents that yieled nothing successful.

The AT&T store manager called RIM and asked for two people, who were not in the oce today, which explains why I was left hanging on hold while the person at the other end of the 800 number

tried to transfer me.

I nally told the sales person that I would need to take a simple phone and “not keep all of my eggs in one basket” again. I’ll just get a wire-less connection for my laptop, or get an iPad or some sort of small tablet.

The End.
