With the change in seasons, many of us see great opportunities that lie ahead for the upcoming summer. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines “Opportunity” as; a favorable juncture of circumstances or a good chance for advancement or progress. At F & M Bank we see endless opportunities in the coming months for both our clients and our team. This past July, after much deliberation, Dunn Investment Company decided to list the three Central Iowa branches for sale. After a significant amount of vetting and a lengthy due diligence period, the perfect match was found in First National Bank, based out of Waverly, Iowa. First National Bank, founded in 1864 is the oldest bank serving Northeast Iowa and has always remained locally-owned and community focused. They currently have offices located in Cedar Falls, Plainfield and Waverly, IA. On May 21st, 2019, F & M Bank and First National Bank officially signed the purchase agreement for the three Security Savings Bank branches. As with all transitions, there will be some small changes but wonderful opportunities as well. With the sale, F & M will be able to continue focusing on operational efficiencies, as well as redeploying its capital into new and existing markets. With this change, wonderful opportunities lie ahead for all three organizations. Again and again, fraudulent activity seems to become much more prevalent. Chip technology incorporated into debit and credit cards is helpful, but we strongly encourage you to be vigilant in monitoring your account and mindful when conducting financial transactions. You can monitor your accounts through our mobile banking app, internet banking, utilizing the Card Valet app and enrolling in ID TheftSmart. To prevent fraud in the first place we encourage you to avoid giving out personal information over the phone/computer, guarding your PIN numbers and watching for skimmers on gas pumps and ATMs. Our team is always ready to help you download or activate any of the aforementioned tools that are available to protect you from fraud. On the business front, record rainfall throughout the Midwest has brought with it some challenges in both the construction and agricultural sectors. Outdoor contractors have been unable to get spring jobs started in a timely fashion with the saturated working conditions. Farmers have been challenged with wet planting conditions but seem to finally have a majority of their 2019 crop in the ground. Throughout the Midwest, it has been estimated that more than a third of the farmers will be filing for prevent plant payments on at least some of their acres in 2019. The opportunities that come from a wet spring like this one are; sharply increased commodity prices with bullish futures, fantastic growing conditions as things begin to dry out and a backlog of construction work to fill up the summer and fall seasons. The stock market continues to show volatility as it bounces around the 26,000 mark. First quarter 2019 GDP growth is estimated at 3.1%, which continues to support slow and steady growth throughout our economy. Even with that steady growth, there are signs the economy may be slowing and economists are actually estimating rate cuts versus rate hikes by the Federal Reserve later on this year. June 25th, 2019 marked our 25th anniversary in the Cedar Rapids Metro. In 1994, we opened our first branch in Cedar Rapids, which is currently located at 4000 1st Avenue NE. Our mission of “Exceeding Clients’ Expectations” continues to remain our primary focus for both our clients and the communities we serve. As always, thank you for your continued loyalty to F & M Bank. We acknowledge and thank all of you for your contribution to the growth and success of F & M Bank. We look forward to being your trusted financial advisors for many years to come. Wishing you much success and prosperity! Sincerely, Nathaniel W. Dunn President & CEO
