parents, family and friends who supported the night.

Our Year 9 students travelled to the Flinders Ranges on Monday for their adventure camping experience. This is a significant part of the Rite Journey that our students have been following this year. The group return on Friday afternoon, no doubt looking forward to a shower and a nice soft bed.

Our Pedal Prix team competed in the 24 hour race held in Murray Bridge last weekend. They were able to achieve 15th out of 34 in their Senior Secondary School Division and 54th out of 207 overall. I was greatly encouraged to see the team work really well together and to see the significant support of parents as they looked after the team. I would really like to thank Mr Jason Moore who has really restarted Pedal Prix at Temple and we now have a really good

number of students involved. Pedal Prix can happen as we have the significant support of parents. They have been invaluable in supporting Mr Moore as they fed and looked after the team over the entire weekend. Pedal Prix is a great activity for the students developing fitness, team work, commitment and perseverance. It is also a great activity for parents to be involved and help build community in the life of Temple.

I have been really encouraged by the support of parents in recent weeks, it has been greatly appreciated. Our Parents Prayer Group and Parents Prayer Breakfast were very special times where we were able to come together before God and pray not only for Temple but for our broader community.

Mrs Shari Dearman finishes as the SSO Manager this term and she has been a

very much loved and appreciated member of our Temple community. Mrs Dearman is moving on into a new season in life and she will be very much missed by our students and staff. I have greatly appreciated how much she has loved the students and looked after them for so many years. I trust and pray for God’s covering over her and her family as she embarks on a new direction. The students showed their appreciation for Mrs Dearman at our Assembly this week. We also welcomed Mrs Cyndi Graham who is our new SSO Manager and we are looking forward to her leading the SSO team.

I trust the holiday break will be a time that is relaxing and refreshing. For the Year 12 students I trust the time will be very productive and I look forward to the final term for the year.

Hats must be worn by all students when outside.

Shakespeare Festival 2019

Week 9 saw the launch of Temple’s first Shakespeare Festival, a showcasing of all the creative responses to studying a set Shakespearean play in Years 8-10. The festivities kicked off with the Medieval Feast on Tuesday where students and staff could purchase the Medieval Meal Deal of roast meat, vegetables, bread and a drink for $5. We gathered to watch the 4 entrants to the Juggling Competition compete in the Assembly area. It was won by Henry Nuske.

During English classes for the remainder of the week, year levels gathered to present their plays, films, raps, musical items, film trailers and interactive games to their peers, each vying hopefully for the best in their category to win the coveted movie tickets. While some performances were traditionally played, others were “Transformative Texts” where students were encouraged to translate the main themes and characters of their play into a modern context and explore how the essential message was still relevant to today. A particular highlight here was a satirical examination of current Australian politics using the plot of Macbeth as an analogy. Another standout was the interactive game based on The Merchant of Venice.

Not all students performed as the “Creative Response

“task is very broad. In the Student Learning Hub we displayed the work of students who elected to design costumes and sets, to create models and cakes or to write poetry or create graphic novels. The variety and originality of creative responses was impressive. The winners in each category were awarded movie tickets, just in time for the school holidays.

As always, big colourful events such as these do not occur without the hard work of many people. I wish to thank the students for engaging enthusiastically in the challenge and the English Faculty staff who demonstrated flexibility and creativity in fostering the talents of their students in a non- traditional form of learning. Special thanks go to Mr Sakatunoff for his valued support in catering for the Feast and to Mrs Dixon for her consistent support in staging and managing the items for all year levels.

Music Showcase 2019

This year, our annual Music Showcase was held on Thursday the 12th of September, at Edwardstown Baptist Church. Just over 70 students were involved in performing across the night, in a variety of different ensembles. We had a very supportive crowd for our performers, with around 300 friends and family attending the night.

Concert Band opened the evening with Cool from West Side Story, and the sixties medley Soulful Sixties, followed by Year 10 Ensemble performing the classic Moondance. Flute Ensemble, Contemporary Vocal Ensemble and String Ensemble then performed a variety of pieces, before Stage Band 1 and String Ensemble combined to perform Love Me or Leave Me, and VocaBlokes treated us to their rendition of Yes and Amen. The Year 12 Ensemble, directed by Mrs Olivia Nortkus, was being marked for SACE, and had toes tapping along to the Charlie Parker bebop standard Yardbird Suite, followed by Cyrille Aimee’s complex arrangement of Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall.

Our Percussion Ensemble Drum Line brought everyone back in after the interval, and then performed the intense piece Mercury Rising. A change of pace had our acapella Vocal Trio sing the classic I Can See Clearly Now which was very impressive. Our newest ensemble this year, Stage Band 2, then performed Stevie Wonder’s Don’t You Worry ‘bout A Thing and the jazz standard All of Me. We were then taken back to our childhood as some of our senior music students played the Monsters Inc. Theme. Year 11 Ensemble had the audience bopping along to Mmmbop and Perdido, made famous by Ella Fitzgerald. Jazz Vocal Ensemble then performed The Idea of North’s Keep My Supper Warm, and the latin-style Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard. The final item for the night was Stage Band 1, who closed the show in style with the jazz standards Our Love is Here to Stay and The Nearness of You, finishing with the funk tune appropriately titled Mr Funkyman.

A big thank you to Suzie Enright, the Parents and Friends Association, and Zaria Specialty Coffee Van for providing the delicious refreshments throughout the evening. Thank you to the teachers who conducted, directed, organised, and did so much behind the scenes. Thank you to the AV team who helped make the night possible, and thank you to all the parents and families who came to support the students. It was a fantastic night, and we look forward to seeing you again next year! Grace Bleby

World Vision Project 2019

This term … students participated in the annual 40 Hour Famine Challenge. While the rest of Australia is now doing the Backpack Challenge where students live out of a backpack for 40 hours in support of the refugee crisis, Temple is persisting in the traditional famine where students go without food, furniture, technology or speaking. (This last option being strongly supported by staff). We have augmented our on line fund raising with several events this term; a pancake breakfast, a barbeque, a dessert bar and a cup cake and coffee stall hosted by the Year 11 Food and Hospitality class. The term’s Casual Day and Food Fiesta takings was also donated to this cause.

As has become our tradition at Temple, the Famine is also a competition between year levels, the highest fundraising group being rewarded with a pizza lunch. This year it has been won by the Year 7s who even without the handicap they deserve for their smaller size cohort, raised the most. Congratulations Year 7. The highest individual fundraiser was Sara Wilson of Year 8.

In total we raised $6, 876 on line and a further ….. through our fundraising events. Thank you to all the students who participated, to the World Vision leadership team who ran the events and to Mrs Schaefer and Mr Adams for coordinating the Year 11s in their organisation of the Food Fiesta.

Food & Hospitality: Cupcakes and Coffee

During Term 3 the Year 11 Food and Hospitality class have been looking at a range of techniques in using fon-dant, piping tips and detailing on cakes and desserts. Students’ main task this term was to create 15 cupcakes that they were to sell at a recess fundraiser on Wednes-day the 18th September with all proceeds going to World Vision. The Year 11’s had the freedom to choose a theme and to create the cupcakes using piping tech-niques and the use of fondant on the cupcakes. In class as preparation we made a range of different flavoured cakes and icings, we also had Belinda Tyczenko, a cake artist from Metro Designer Cakes by Belinda also come in to do a Masterclass with the students. Students also had the opportunity to spend the day at TAFE Regency with the main bakery lecturer Michael Wilkins, who demonstrated a range of cake making and decorating techniques. Throughout the term the Year 11’s also per-formed coffee training both in class and at lunchtimes, which allowed some of the students to also make coffee and hot drinks to sell them during the fundraiser. The images in this article are from the TAFE day, the Master-class from Belinda and the Cupcake and Coffee Fundraise for World Vision.

Thank you to all who helped on the day and to those who supported my class in purchasing cakes and drinks. In total the students raised close to $300, with all the proceeds going to World Vision.

Home Economics

1st Prize at The Show!

During Term 3 last year as part of their Textiles studies, the Year 10 Home Economics students, designed a soft toy to donate to charity. For most of the students it was their first encounter designing and sewing a soft toy.

Tiana Scholtz’s work was outstanding and beautifully created. We entered her work in the Royal Adelaide Show Class 487 – for Junior Textiles and Garment Construction. We proudly congratulate Tiana on her remarkable accomplishment by winning the first prize in this section.

Year 11 Biology Excursion

On the Wednesday of week 7 the Stage 1 Biology students, ranging from over years 10- 11 participated on an excursion. This consisted of travelling to Botanical gardens via tram. Once there the student observed various different plants, from may different places in the world and used this to answer some questions in there booklets. They then had recess at the Botanic Gardens Café, before moving on to the Adelaide Zoo. Once at the Zoo students were left to their own devices, with the task of completing their booklets, whilst investigating and observing the animals in their habitats. After a peaceful lunch at the Fig Tree Café the students were dismissed, with the renewed knowledge of the unicellular organisms that they learnt about that day.

Year 10 Drama Excursion

In week 9 of this term, Temple’s Year 10 Drama students had the amazing opportunity to see Windmill’s hilarious, engaging and thought-provoking production of Girl Asleep: a story about a young teenager, Greta, who awkwardly holds onto the memories of her childhood, but for whom the oddities of adolescence literally came knocking at her door.

Students witnessed a production of mixed styles, with realism and surrealism being present. Most of the play was set in the fabulous world of the 1970s with bright colourful and expressive costumes, showing the everyday experience of familial dynamics between teenagers and parents. But this was just the beginning…

Students were able to learn how sound and lighting combine to transform a dramatic space into a whole new

realm, as Greta was sent into an alternative fairy-tale like universe on a quest to find a part of her true self. The ensemble of actors dressed in elaborate symbolic costumes portraying key aspects of familial characters, all be it in an alternative form. Finally, at the conclusion of this journey, Greta arrived back in the real world, but now as a person able to face how her life actually is, rather than through her childhood memories.

Windmill’s production of Girl Asleep was an excellent coming of age story that explored the themes of friendship, peer pressure, private spaces, and dreams. It was a wonderful and memorable experience for students to draw upon in their Drama studies in Term 4, helping them to see what is possible if they put their imaginations to use.

Year 11 Food Fiesta

On Friday of Week 8, The Shed, Food Tech and Canteen spaces were all a buzz with the sounds of chopping, boiling, frying, mixing and sizzling as the Year 11’s cooked up a storm for our Year 11 Food Fiesta. As a concluding activity to our unit on Social Justice in Christian Living, and as part of our whole school casual day, the Year 11’s worked in groups to produce a variety of food items for students to purchase during recess and lunch. With the canteen closed for the event the Year 11’s were responsible for feeding the hungry hordes of students throughout the day. At recess an assortment of homemade baked goods were sold which included cupcakes, brownies, fairy bread, honey crackles, and amazingly, fondue which was served from a chocolate fountain. At lunchtime students prepared Pizza, Tacos, Paella, Sausage Sizzle, Loaded Fries and Mac’n’Cheese.

As all funds raised from the day go to support World Vision, we aim to maximise our fundraising efforts by limiting the items we purchase from the shops and encouraging students to contribute ingredients for their dishes from home. We were thrilled with the response

from the students as most groups contributed most, if not all, of their ingredients themselves. This is a great reflection of the attitude of each of the students as they wholeheartedly sought to support those who are a lot less fortunate than they are.

Aside from the fundraising opportunities that are created through Food Fiesta, there is always a strong sense of community that is generated amongst the student body. The Shed becomes a hive of activity with students enjoying the atmosphere and having fun with their friends.

A special mention must be given to Mr Paul Sakatunoff who had approximately 30 Year 11 students invade his Food Tech space to prepare their dishes. Special thanks also goes to Mr Brad Smith and Mr Peter Parker who are always extremely gracious in assisting us to set up for this wonderful event. Mrs Schaefer & Mr Adams

8/9 Boys & Girls SACSA Carnival West Beach, Wednesday, 18th September 2019 Regrettably, both boys & girls couldn’t repeat last year’s excellent outcome in the group stage of the tournament. Results often do not reflect what the performances were in a game that is low scoring and on limit time. Scoring goals didn’t came easy for either team but the boys finally unleashed their scoring ability in their last classification game versus Endevour Silver winning 5:0 thanks to goals from Anthony Hochwald and Luke Mosman. Special thanks go to Mrs Ellen Everett who managed the 8/9 Girls team on the day and to Josh Saludo and Lee Askin (Year 12 student coaches) who contributed enormously to a positive team spirit despite the unfortunate results.

Open Boys SACSA Carnival, West Beach, Friday, 20th September 2019 The preparations to the tournament were less than ideal which seemed to be reflected in a clear 2:0 loss to Endevour in our first game. However, we did not concede any further goals all day, mostly thanks to James Smith’s fantastic goal keeping skills and some outstanding defending by our entire team. Our 2nd game was versus Temple Paralowie where we achieved a nil all

draw. Next came two very close 1:0 victories over Tyndale and Kings which was certainly a little fortunate but not completely undeserved. 0:0 versus Cedar was then followed by another 1:0 win verses Emmaus which earnt us the number one spot in Division 1 with only scoring 3 goals (Jack Sexon 2 and Michael Pietsch). Temple Paralowie also qualified for the Grand Final on equal points with us but we had a better goal difference by 1 goal. The Grand Final was another 0:0 draw, so penalties had to decide after the boys played soccer for 2hrs 34 minutes overall. Paralowie hit the ball against the aluminium upright in their second attempt and our boys didn’t show any nerves under the pressure of a large crowd watching winning 3:2. Congratulations to all the boys for their excellent performances on the day, the momentum they were able to build and to win the tournament they were not expected to win. Many thanks to all the parents who came out to support the World Game on both days with special thanks to Kelan Jones who also did the line man duty for us in several games.

For the world game,
