Town of Grodno was founded in 1128

History of Education in Grodno:

• 1591 – an Orthodox school was

opened

• 1625 – 1773 – Jesuit college was

established

• 1775 – the first Medical Academy in

Belarus was founded

• 1893 – Mariinsk women’s gymnasium

was opened

Grodno: academic traditions

1940 – Teacher’s Training Institute was founded

1944 – Grodno State Pedagogical Institute

1957 – the Institute was named after Yanka Kupala

1978 – Pedagogical Institute was reorganised into

the Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno
