LLANRHIDIAN PRIMARY SCHOOL GOVERNORS’ REPORT TO PARENTS

Autumn Term 2017

INTRODUCTON

On behalf of the Governing Body I am once again delighted to present this annual report to you. It provides important information on how our School has performed in the last 12 months and how, as governors, we shall continue to ensure it is the very best it can be in the coming school year.

You will find here important details of results at end of key stage assessments as well as information on a wide range of our school's plans, activities, policies and practice.

This year we do not propose to hold a separate AGM with Parents/Carers based on the contents of this report. However should you wish to take up any issues relating to the school with governors we can provide you with the opportunity on an individual basis by contacting either myself or Mrs Caswell.

We have started this school year with an exceptional endorsement from the Welsh Schools Inspectorate (ESTYN) on the whole education experience our pupils receive in Llanrhidian Primary. For this we have to thank Mrs Caswell and all her staff for their care, nurture and application of excellent professional standards in all they undertake on behalf of our school and its amazing children.

My Best Regards

Richard VergeChair of Governors

School Performance

The following are the results for 2016/17 end of Key Stage Assessments (Year 2 and 6 only) It is important to note that in a small school such as ours, one pupil usually represents 5.5% or more. Staff analyse data in many ways. Targets for the school are the result of such analysis which feed into the school development plan. The average expected government level for pupils is Outcome 5, at Year 2, and Level 4 at Year 6.

AssessmentLlanrhidian has developed its own robust tracking system that enables the school to produce individual pupil profiles covering a range of assessment scores and data on each pupil. These profiles contain information regarding attendance and academic progress. We plot individual pupil progress as well as cohort progress (which we use to review teaching and learning) and set future targets for improvement. Cohorts can be tracked and compared to LA and All Wales Family Groups, as well as National standards so we can compare our pupils’ standards with similar schools.

Our whole school attendance at the end of 2016-17 was 96.4%. This places us in the 2nd Quarter when compared to similar schools across Wales. However, we are very proud to say that we were the top school in Swansea. Our school target remains ambitious at 96.85%.

Additional Learning Needs

We continue to provide a high standard of support within the framework of the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice for Wales 2002. We consistently operate the Graduated Response, as required by the afore mentioned Code of Practice. Our current SEN Register stands at 16 school action, 5 school action plus and 2 statemented.

How is the SEN Register Constructed?

When a member of the teaching staff has concern related to the academic progress, emotional development or medical condition of a pupil, they bring their concerns to the attention of the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO). The teacher and SENCO then decide on a course of action and place the pupil on the SEN Register. Pupils with a Statement of Educational Needs are also entered on the SEN Register.

In October of every year, children on the SEN Register and any other pupils who might be perceived as needing extra support are entered as part of The City and County of Swansea’s Annual SEN Survey. On the basis of this survey, funding is allocated to individual pupils and support is provided accordingly within the school. Pupils who are in possession of a Statement of Educational Needs are also entered as part of this annual survey

Occasionally referrals are made to Access to Learning, the City and County’s SEN support mechanism asking for support from specialist teachers employed by this service. Pupils referred might already be entered on the SEN Register, or they might be new additions to the register.

Any Looked after Child (LAC), or pupil who is monitored by Social Services, is automatically placed on the SEN Register.

The school also receives additional funds to help support individual focus groups of pupils through the Pupil Deprivation Grant (PDG) and Educational Improvement Grant (SEG). The school is working with its cluster primary schools (The North Gower Partnership) to focus upon raising standards in Literacy and Numeracy.

What is an Individual Education Plan and Who is Issued One?

All pupils listed on the SEN Register, are required by the Code of Practice to receive an individual programme of work, which is constructed with direct reference to their individual needs. In accordance with the requirements of the Code of Practice, the view of parents and pupils are sought and recorded within the review process.

Who is Responsible for Delivering SEN Support Within Our School?

Mrs Joseph is the SENCO (Special Needs Co-Coordinator) and support teacher. Support is also provided by Teaching Assistants, under the guidance of class teachers when appropriate. Mrs Joseph is always happy to discuss your child’s progress in relation to special needs, should you wish to do so.

Who is the Governor with Responsibility for Special Needs?

The Code of Practice requires that a member of the governing body is allocated the responsibility of liaising with the SENCO and Head Teacher, in order to maintain a high standard of provision for children with special needs. In the case of Llanrhidian Primary School, that governor is Mrs. Laura Davies.

Arrangements for the teaching of Welsh

Llanrhidian is an English medium school and all correspondence is provided in English only. Welsh is taught as a second language from Nursery age. The National Curriculum requires certain levels of competence in oracy, writing and reading Welsh, which children will be expected to attain by Year 6. It is the school's aim to use the Welsh language in such a way as to ensure that children see, hear and use it as a natural part of school life. It is given a prominent role in many school activities. Children also have an opportunity to learn about Welsh culture and heritage, as well as the language of Wales, through activities such as St. David's Day celebrations. Our teaching of Welsh is supported by the LA’s team of peripatetic Welsh teachers (Athrawon Bro), who visit the school regularly to work alongside teachers and pupils in promoting the Welsh Language. All staff undertake relevant training to improve their competency in teaching and learning Welsh.

Sport

The school offers two hours of physical education each week as part of the curriculum. Teams in different sports compete in various competitions. There is also an after schools sports club which is free and run by staff. We partake in competitive sporting events against other local schools in activities such as netball, cross-country, football and cricket.

Junior classes undertake swimming classes. Older pupils have the opportunity to attend residential courses at Llangrannog and Pendine.

Before and After School Arrangements

The school offers an Art & Craft Club from 7.55a.m. to 8.25a.m. at a cost of £20 per half term - a contract needs to be in place. Also, there is a free breakfast service to pupils of reception age and above. This service, which starts at 8.25 a.m. offers a range of nutritious foods. Our breakfast/ lunchtime supervisory assistants and canteen staff must be commended for the way they have been part of the team at Llanrhidian by working together. They decorate the canteen so that it is a bright and welcoming environment for our children. Their work is very much appreciated and doesn’t go unnoticed.

Our ‘After School Club’ facility runs from 3.25 p.m. – 5.25 p.m. Monday to Wednesday and aims to offer pupils structured activities as well as a light snack. After School Club costs £8 per contracted session (2 hrs), ad hoc £10 (2 Hrs). Also a reduced rate is charged for ½ sessions – contracted session until 4.15 - £4.00 and ad hoc ½ session until 4.15 is £5.00. Again, staff go to great lengths to ensure pupils enjoy their time at the club and have the opportunity to participate in a range of interesting activities.

Pupil Voice and Active Citizenship

The school works with charities that promote active citizenship such as Lawrence’s Roundabout Appeal, Sponsored Child and Children in Need. Pupils and parents are encouraged to become aware of local, national and global issues faced by children. We promote a sense of community and respect. Llanrhidian Primary School pupils are encouraged to be active and informed citizens who look after their school local community and beyond to develop a positive future for all. Children have a variety of roles – School Council, Eco Council, Rights Respecting ambassadors and Welsh ambassadors. More recently we have developed a pupil group called the Wellbeing Warriors. Children take their responsibility very seriously and show commitment for the good of our school. These activities develop children’s sense of wellbeing as they focus on needs of others around them and their relationship with those around them.

Healthy Eating and Drinking

Llanrhidian Primary School is committed to the aims of the Healthy Schools Network and to promoting the health and well being of all in its school community. The school has a “Food and Fitness Policy” which has been agreed by Governors and staff. As part of the school’s curriculum, pupils have the opportunity to develop a good understanding of healthy eating and drinking and are encouraged to eat a range of healthy foods. The school also promotes healthy eating and drinking through the following activities:-

Fruit Tuck Shop/Fruit Snacks Milk Provision Promoting Healthy Lunch Boxes Encouraging pupils to drink water Breakfast

The school maintains close links with the local community through school performances and events. Close links are also maintained with Gowerton Comprehensive School through visits of pupils (Year 5 & 6), Headteacher meetings, curriculum leader meetings and sporting activities.

Mr Steve Jones from St. Madoc is a welcomed visitor to school and conducts the school assembly on a fortnightly basis. P.C. Secondary School Transfers

Our links with our partner secondary school, Gowerton School have continued to be strong over the course of the year. The Year 6 children have attended orchestral days at the school. Gowerton organise a ‘transition period’ in which our Year 6 children will spend several days at the school familiarising themselves with the layout of the site, the teachers, and procedures and routines in regards to lunchtimes etc.

Moral and Social Development

We have a PSE programme which helps guide and support the moral and social development of our pupils. Our school ethos and school polices such as positive behaviour, sustainability and global citizenship, discipline, inclusion and strategic equality plan support this area. This is underpinned by the United Nations of the Rights of the Child.

Planning for Improvement

These are our 6 main targets for 2017-18

Progress on our School Development Plan (SDP)Parents are made aware of the focus via newsletters, parent meetings and our school website. The SDP is available at the school office should any parent wish to read it in more detail.

Our SDP runs from September to July each academic year. Our targets are devised using a number of sources - analysis of end of academic year data from National and standardised tests and teacher assessments, comparisons of Llanrhidian Primary School performance against similar schools in the LA and Wales, local and national priorities, Estyn recommendations, staff, parent, pupil and governor questionnaires and monitoring and audits undertaken by the Head teacher, Senior Management Team, Subject Coordinators and external advisors.

The Curriculum

We are in a time of significant change in primary education. As a Pioneer School, we are in the privileged position of being able to develop teaching and learning through innovative approaches.

Planning and assessment of a skills continuum is at the heart of this change, in addition to raising standards in reading, writing, numeracy and digital competency. National Tests were implemented in Reading and Numeracy in May 2017 for all pupils from Y2 to Y6. Parents are informed of their child’s

scores in these tests at the end of the Summer Term. The school uses this, and other data, to track pupils’ progress, inform teaching and learning and also to identify and support individual pupil needs.

All subject polices are updated and reviewed regularly, and our skills based curriculum planning is continually reviewed.

Governors and members of staff have worked closely with the Head teacher regarding School Self-evaluation, assessment and raising standards.

School Policies

We regularly review and update our school policies. Reviews are undertaken on a rolling programme, led by relevant leaders.

Review of policies ensures the inclusion of new developments, resources and methodologies particularly with the Government drive on safeguarding and raising standards in literacy and numeracy. Copies of school policies can be obtained from the school office and many are available on our school website.

Health & Safety & Safeguarding

Safeguarding is of paramount importance to the staff and governors of Llanrhidian. All staff and governors are required to take child protection training every three years. The school provided training in Autumn 2016. Mrs D Caswell is the designated Child Protection Officer for the school. Mr R Verge is the designated Child Protection Governor for the School.

Whilst encouraging independence and decision making, the school strives to provide the pupils with a safe environment in which to nurture their skills. Changes to the school over the last two years in terms of health and safety have included:-

The addition of new CCTV cameras to cover more areas of the school grounds Enhanced DBS systems New security lights around school building

Toilet facilities

Llanrhidian Primary provides good quality toilet facilities throughout the school. The school recognises that well-maintained toilet facilities where learners feel comfortable and safe and have open access to throughout the school day, are essential for health, well-being, and learning. Toilets and washroom facilities are open and available to learners throughout the school day. They are suitable for the range of anticipated users, including learners with disabilities and special needs, with adequate lighting, sanitary disposal, fixtures and fittings.

An Accessibility Plan and Disability Equality Plan

The school’s Strategic Equality Plan - SEP - is reviewed every three years and was reviewed in December 2015. It identifies access needs in order that the school may continue to be inclusive to all. This has been used to inform the LA of school priorities in this area. All visitors are asked to inform the office if they have specific needs and we endeavour to meet requests. A copy of the SEP is available from our school office. This is also be available via the school website.
