Dear Guests,

Welcome to Passover 5778 at Camp Ramah in California! We’re so glad you’re here. This program book includes all of the information you need to ensure a relaxing and meaningful stay. If you are joining us for the first time, we hope this book answers many of your questions. While it’s difficult to capture the warm, engaging spirit of our community on paper, these pages will give you a sense of what’s in store. We thank the entire Camp Ramah in California community for building such an inspirational, creative and diverse program. This special annual retreat demonstrates the vision our founders and board members had of offering year- round Jewish experiential living and learning programs. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help you enjoy your stay. We hope you take full advantage of all Camp Ramah in California has to offer. If you need assistance, please visit our reception desk in the main office or locate one of the Camp Ramah in California staff members. We look forward to celebrating a meaningful holiday together.

PASSOVER AT RAMAH

Camp Ramah in California’s warm, relaxed Passover community draws multigenerational guests from across the country and internationally, and includes singles, couples, families, empty nesters, college students, and grandparents. We welcome new participants every year with open arms, and are also delighted to reunite with friends we see each year who have become extended family. On Thursday and Friday you will have the chance to familiarize yourself with the campus and participate in some pre-Seder programming. All meals are served in our Dining Hall, the hub of our campus, which is close to many of our program buildings, library, several conference rooms and many guest buildings. Yom Tov at Camp Ramah in California is a special time, with services, discussions, study groups, meditations and hikes. Some people choose to dress up for Yom Tov. Generally we encourage everyone to dress and participate as they feel comfortable - our daily dress code is casual. If the terrain is too challenging for you to walk, please let us know and we can arrange for a ride in a golf cart.

PASSOVER AT RAMAH

Our first night Seders on Friday evening will be led by a group of our amazing scholars and staff. On Saturday, we welcome you to join either the Family Seder Tableau - a first for our Passover Program this year - or the traditional Seder later that evening. If you are interested in the family Seder Tableau, you must sign-up in advance. We provide “A Different Night” Haggadah for each guest, and of course each table is set with Seder plates, ritual items and Kiddush cups. We also provide small afikomen gifts for children under age 13. Throughout the holiday, our schedule includes activities for all levels of experience and knowledge, facilitated by our amazing artists and scholars in residence and helpful, friendly staff. We’ll have engaging discussions, small study groups, children’s activities, sports and games. On Chol Hamo’ed, in addition to group excursions, we will enjoy art projects, ropes course, movies, and so much more. Daily, our team of chefs will create spectacular, mouthwatering buffets and outstanding, personalized service. Most importantly, don’t worry about a thing. Our staff is ready to assist you and happy to help! Tipping is not required during your stay, but if you’d like to tip, we suggest 5 to 10% of your room stay. Teri Naftalin will have an envelope for you and your tip will be distributed evenly amongst our dinner, housekeeping, and maintenance staff. We look forward to a wonderful holiday experience.

Book, Paper, Printers... How Three Inventions Made Judaism, Christianity and Islam into What they Are Today Every religion has a message, a body of knowledge it wishes to communicate to its adherents. Towards this purpose, different religions embrace certain technologies for the dissemination of knowledge, and reject others. We will examine three major technologies that Judaism, Christianity and Islam have decided to invent, adopt or reject at various points in time and we will understand how these decisions variously shaped the three religions. Tallit Making Workshop A Ramah Talisarium!!! Join together with others who are making their own talit. It's a mitzvah to enhance the beauty of a talit, and one way of doing so is by making one's own talit (for both men and women). Please choose a piece of fabric that is linen, wool or silk. It can be a pattern or solid. If you would like to make a small talit (more like a scarf), the fabric should be 5' x 2'. If you'd like to make a large talit (more like a cloak), the fabric should be 6' x 4' or 6' x 3'. The measurements do not have to be exact. The advantages to the larger size aare that you feel that you are actually wearing a garment, not a scarf and that you feel enwrapped by it. Whizin

Healing Movement: While family building is timeless, so too are fertility challenges. Loss, trouble conceiving, needing medical interventions, choosing to adopt, or choosing not to have children are reality for many. Life moves on with or without children. Whether it has been 1 year or 50 years, it is never too late to honor the journeys we experienced, appreciate the memories we carry, and nurture the maternal side of ourselves. Through (gentle) movement, learning, spiritual exploration, and creative expression, this session will provide a space to reflect on the experience of fertility challenges and give our bodies and souls the opportunity to heal.
