A s I write to you today, six days have elapsed since the tragic

events of September 11. Like most of you, I have had a very

difficult time sorting through my own thoughts and

emotions. It has been a time of prayer and reflection about what is

really important in my own life.

I don't believe that the date of the attack on our Nation was a

coincidence. 911 is the telephone number our entire nation uses to call for

help when we are in desperate need. I believe that each one of us has received

our own 911 call from our Father to truly give Him first place in every area of

our lives. Our nation desperately needs Christ and the method God uses to win

the lost is the witness of His children. Our life is the only Christ our world can

see and touch.

Jesus said in John 12:32, "But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will

draw all men to myself." God is calling each of us to lift up Jesus right now,

where we are. How can we do that?

PRACTICE PERSONAL HOLINESS

1. Dedicate our bodies to God for His use.

2. Confess and turn from any known sin.

3. Pray to be used by God every single day.

4. Stay in God's Word and share what you learn with others.

5. Memorize Scripture and use it as God gives opportunities.

6. Learn how to lead someone to Christ and pray to be willing to do it.

It is imperative that each of us give Christ first place in every word we say

and in every thing we do in the days ahead. Our world is in desperate need of a

Savior. We have received our 911 call from God. I pray we will answer the call.

Talkin’ With Kay

As I watched the first tower ofthe World Trade Center

crumble, my prayer was,“Oh, Lordlet these people know you.” Myvery next thought was,“Am I doingeverything I can to tell people aboutJesus Christ?” I thank God for theopportunity I am given through FirstPlace to share the plan of salvation.

As I was writing this article, Ireceived an e-mail from PeggyFollrod in Ohio, stating:“Thecommitment to sharing Christ and

the First Place goals are so evident by every video, article, etc., the First Place staff releases. Thanks!”

I believe evangelism is the key to why God has blessedthis program for more than 20 years. Share His good news! The past few days have been shocking, but the words Jesusspoke in John have given me such comfort,“Peace I leavewith you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as theworld gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do notbe afraid.” John 14:27

Most of us are well into our fall session using the newFirst Place materials, and all are being blessed. I am so proudof each you. Change is not always easy and price increasesare even worse. I have received many wonderful messages, much like this one from Terry Cranfill in North Carolina. Ianswered a question about why the Member’s Guide is notsold separately, and this is an excerpt from Terry’s reply tome:

“I totally understand the reasons behind FirstPlace wanting to keep the cost down. You allhave taken many questions concerning theprice, and have handled the issue with grace. Our group also grumbled, but our leadershipteam reminded them that there are alwayscosts to something that you believe in andknow will bring success. If I did not know thatthe program worked and that God directlyinspired it, I would also have a problem withthe cost. God in his infinite wisdom proves tome time and time again that if I give Him FirstPlace, He will take control.”

We are still trying to work out the kinks and many ofyou have sent messages pointing out some tiny mistakes.Anexample is: On our list of snacks, we have tomato listed as afruit! I found this very odd since First Place has alwaysconsidered tomates a vegetable, but there is that perennialquestion: Is the tomato really fruit or vegetable? I finallyfound the answer in some of my recent study. Botanically

speaking, the tomato is a fruit, a pulpy plant product thatcontains seeds. Legally, it’s a vegetable, no joke! In 1893, theU.S. Supreme Court ruled the tomato is a vegetable;therefore, it is subject to import tax.The U.S. growers wontheir case by arguing that the tomato is eaten more like avegetable with the main meal and not like fruits, as dessert.First Place will continue to “be legal” and count tomatoes asa vegetable.

Nutritionally, the tomato is an excellent source ofvitamin C (one medium tomato provides 40 percent of theDaily Value) and is a good source of vitamin A (20% DV). It isrich in lycopene, a carotenoid. One study shows that eatingseven or more servings of tomatoes a week, a person is 60percent less likely to develop colon, rectal and stomachcancers than those who eat two or less servings per week.Latest studies suggest that tomatoes may aid in vision andlung function. It is best not to refrigerate whole rawtomatoes because it ruins their flavor and texture. Greentomatoes compare in nutrients to a red tomat except theydo not have the same carotenoid punch.

Processed tomatoes (canned, sauce, ketchup) containeven more lycopen because cooking breaks down cellwalls, releasing and concentrating carotenoids. When we eata small amount of fat with tomatoes, the fat enableslycopene to be better absorbed. Maybe we should declareOctober,“Eat More Tomatoes Month.”

Please continue to pray for wisdom, healing, and thepeace of John 14:27 for our nation, especially for the leadersof our great nation.

Ultimate Strength

Shery BoylesFitness Instructor, NSCA [email protected]

Ireceived the following exercise question via email from a FirstPlace participant who lives in Phoenix,Arizona. It's a question

involving exercise, nutrition, and metabolism. I think several of youmay be interested in the topic, so I've decided to answer thequestion in this month's exercise article.

Dear Shery,I've heard it said that your metabolism doesn't start in the morninguntil you eat something and that's why breakfast is such animportant meal. If you get up and exercise first thing in themorning, like going for a walk, without eating are you wasting yourtime or will you still burn fat and calories?

MY BEST ANSWER:Let me frame my response with this—metabolism is a very

complicated subject. Medical journals are full of pages and chaptersdealing with all that is involved in what we simply refer to asmetabolism. Basically, metabolism refers to ALL of the chemicalreactions that take place in our body. Nutrients such ascarbohydrates, fats, and proteins are all metabolized differently. Weare highly complicated systems. However, when most of us speak ofmetabolism we are equating metabolism with calorie burning, just asthe above question illustrates.

Our metabolic system is constantly at work, even while we are atrest. Resting metabolic rate or RMR, refers to the energy (calories)our body uses to maintain bodily functions while we are at rest(sleeping). During rest, our metabolism is at its lowest rate. Uponrising and moving about, our metabolism rate begins to increase. When food is ingested, digestion begins and metabolism continues toincrease. Metabolic rates are affected by the amount of foodconsumed as well as frequency of consumption. Likewise, metabolism is affected by frequency, duration, and type of activity(aerobic vs. anaerobic).

So, to answer this seemingly simple question is not so simple. Our metabolism doesn't start in the morning—it never stops—it onlyincreases and decreases. Eating breakfast will help elevate themetabolic rate because digestion begins. Exercising will help elevatemetabolism because calories are being used as our muscles move.

Eating before or after exercise is really a personal preference andexercise is always beneficial no matter when it takes place. Myrecommendation for maximum benefit is to eat a small breakfastabout 20 -30 minutes before you begin exercising. After yourworkout is completed, wait about an hour before consumingadditional calories. Research indicates our bodies will continue toburn calories for about an hour after activity ceases. If the bodydoesn't have to call up energy for use in digestion, it will continue toburn (metabolize) stored fat. However, if eating before exercise isnot a possibility, your exercise time is not wasted. Your body willalways burn calories during activity.

Keep moving in His Ultimate Strength!

To those who have not might,He increases strength.

Leadership Training

The new materials havebrought excitement, renewed interest and

motivation to First Place leaders andmembers. However, with thisexcitement comes new challengesand questions. I will seek to answer

some of the common questions Ihave been asked over this lastmonth. I pray that these answerswill help you as you lead others inseeking Christ First.

PERSONAL WEIGHT RECORD: This form, which was ineach of the former Bible studies, was mistakenly left out of ournew materials. Members need this form to record theirbeginning measurements, weekly weight and weight loss. Isuggest three options for dealing with this need:1. Have members record this information on the inside

cover of their Bible study book.2. Create a weight record of your own and make copies for

each member.3. Access our website at www.firstplace.org and print out

the copy of the Personal WeightRecord.

PRAYER PARTNER REQUEST FORM: This form, found in the Leader guide, page 90, is a tool to help membersencourage and pray for one another. Leaders are givenpermission to copy this page containing two request formseach and distribute the forms to members at the beginning ofeach class. Then, members are asked to complete the form, including their prayer request. At the end of class themembers put their form in a basket and then draw anothermember’s form out of the basket. This enables members toexpress a personal request in writing and be assured thatsomeone will be praying for them that week. Also, themember is asked to contact that person during the week forencouragement.

WELLNESS WORKSHEETS: The essential WellnessWorksheets can be found in the member guide. There areadditional Wellness Worksheets found in each Bible study.Giving Christ First Place has six Wellness Worksheets. Theseare informative and most are intended to be interactive. Inother words, the member will work through the worksheetresponding to questions that will help them develop a plan forimplementing this information into their lives. Since themember guide is intended to be a permanent piece, manypeople will not want to write in it. Some options that willsolve this challenge are:l Ask members to write on Wellness Worksheets with

pencil. This will allow members to erase their answers ifthey ever go back through that worksheet.

l Ask members to write answers for the WellnessWorksheets in their prayer journal or on separate sheetsof paper.FYI: In the leader guide, page 42, beside the letter d,it says to “Distribute” the Wellness Worksheets. This isan error. Please “Assign” the Wellness Worksheets. You would not need to distribute these worksheets, because they already have them in their MemberGuide.

MIXING THE OLD WITH THE NEW: As members, transition from the old materials to the new, challenges willarise. Some members who had purchased the old materialsshortly before the new materials were released may feel theyare financially unable to purchase the new materials. Therefore, you may be leading a class where half of yourmembers have the new and half still have the old. Allmembers should have the same new Bible study, which willhelp with the Bible study discussion and commitment recordcompletion. I encourage leaders to use the new leadermaterials and share verbally any new information you feel willbenefit those without the new materials. You can also locate

Questionsany handout from the old member manual that may be similarto a wellness worksheet and assign that as an alternative “AtHome Assignment”for those who do not have the newmaterials. Flexibility is the key word for a leader during thistransition time. Be creative and resourceful as you try to meetthe needs of all members in your class.

COPYING MATERIALS: Please read very carefully thesecond page in the member guide and leader guide. Thesepages state very plainly what may and may not be copiedLEGALLY. The bottom line is, ONLY the pages with thefollowing notation can be legally reproduced: (Permissionto photocopy granted.) Many of us feel badly that some ofour members do not have the new materials and want tohelp them anyway we can. However, copying pages thathave not been expressly permitted by Gospel Light isillegal. Also, we are doing a disservice to those who haveinvested in the new materials. Let’s all work together withthe utmost integrity, provide each member with theinformation they need to develop a healthy lifestyle.

I want to express my deep appreciation to all First Placeleaders and the support they have given the First Placestaff during this transition. This month I have beenmeditating on 1 Peter 3:8, 9 and want to exhort you withthe last phrase of that scripture, “ . . .but giving a blessinginstead; for you were called for the very purpose that youmight inherit a blessing.” Thank you for the blessings youhave extended to us. I pray you will be a blessing to yourFirst Place members and as a result inherit the blessing ofGod on your life.

Part II. . . Pots and Pans Can Improve Your Cooking

Last month I mentioned to youabout choosing pans that are

“good conductors” and “heavygauged.” This simply means thatyou get better responsive heat.Good heat conductors, such ascopper and aluminum, areresponsive to temperaturechanges. They will do what theheat source tells them to do--heatup, cool down--almost instantly. You also get faster heat flow. Heatflows more easily through a goodheat conductor, assuring a quickequalizing of temperature on thecooking surface. You will also geteven heat diffusion.

A thicker pan has more distancebetween the cooking surface andthe heat source. By the time theheat flows to the cooking surface,it will have spread out evenly, because heat diffuses as it flows. And finally, you get more heat.Mass holds heat. The more panthere is to heat, the more heat thepan can hold, so there’s moreconstant heat for better browning, faster reducing, and hottersautéing.

Now for the types of pans youneed. First of all determine whattype of cooking you are going tobe doing. Most people need asmall pan for making sauces (2quart), a medium pan for cookingvegetables (3 quart), a larger potfor making soups and cookingpasta (8 quart), and various bakingpans for muffins, cookies, roasting, etc. For me, my favorite is a goodnon-stick all-purpose sauté pan

(10-11 inch). I would consider agood heavy-duty 18/10 stainlesssteel-type for everyday cooking.

These are marketed under thename of “Tools of the Trade”, foundin most Federated stores (Macy’s,Rich’s, and Bloomingdale’s) All-Clad, and Cuisinart to name a few. Most department stores havemonthly sales on these sets for aslow as $75.00 for a 13-piece set. Iwould also have on hand a well-seasoned cast iron skillet. Thesecan be picked up most anywhereand the trick is to season themproperly. For that good non-sticksauté pan, it would be best to finda restaurant supply house andpurchase a commercial variety. Ihave one that I use daily in mybusiness and it is over eight yearsold and looks brand new.

Specialty wares such as copperare great if you do a lot of baking. They also look great in your kitchenif you don’t mind keeping thempolished. Le Creuset is a goodheavy-duty enameled cast-ironcookware. These are great formaking roasts, stews,or anythingthat needs a long slow simmer.

Whatever you decide to buy, remember that most sets willinclude the lids in a number ofpiece counts. And mostimportantly, always keep your potsand pans clean and “dent” free.Small indentions will affect theway a pan cooks. As always BonAppetit.
