Greetings and Blessings Fellow Parishioners:

We are all living in strange times, and circumstances for most of us have changedgreatly, however we do have a community, staff, and a place of worship which wecontinue to turn to for sustenance and grace.  We can all count our blessings for theefforts of Beth, Brian, Stuart, Linda and Phil, to not only continue to keep themission of Calvary going, but also to find new ways to keep our connections tochurch and spiritual centers vital.  In the end though, it takes all of us, the wholecongregation, to keep Calvary vibrant and doing God’s mission — we lift each otherup through our support for one another. Now is the time to do what we can toprovide a firm foundation to our parish community by giving our financial supportas well.

During the pandemic, we acknowledge the need to understand the changingdynamics of worship and individual stewardship and responsibilities. Given this newworld we live in, we are all in the process of making decisions about how to live ourlives in a safe and comfortable manner while at the same time struggling to adjust tonew schedules, routines, and environments. Today we are asking everyone to gothrough their personal process of discerning how to manage to pledge. We hope that

most of you will be able to pledge financially, to preserve the great church staff, building, and community on which we’ve come to rely.

Calvary is still here, still provides services, and its staff and volunteers are workingharder than ever to make sure we have a presence whether that be through remoteservices served up on facebook, or a Vestry member calling to keep in contact withsomeone from the parish.  We need them and they need us to support the work thatthey do in God’s name.  Early next week, we will mail out our annual pledge cardsalong with a letter from the Stewardship Community.  I’m hoping each of you willdecide to give, even if some small amount, to show support for what we have becometo each other, and to the community.

We give thanks for the faithful and steadfast work of our Vestry and our Stewardship Team.

Almighty God, for whom we must account for all our powers and privileges:  Guidethe people of the United States in the election of officials and representatives; that,by faithful administration and wise laws; the rights of all may be protected and ournation be enabled to fulfill your purposes. Renew in us the desire for and the abilityto engage in civil discourse so that we may include all in the great diversity whichyou have given us in this country. Inspire us to speak with those with whom weagree, and with those with whom we differ, with open hearts, open minds, and openears. None of us are right all the time God, and only you, with your Son and the HolySpirit, know the course of justice with peace and love that we must follow. Help us toknow that journey.  In your name we pray.  Amen.

A tornado of young workers swept through the oasis garden on Sunday afternoon, and left the garden ready for winter.   All the flowers were pulled up and taken to thecity compost, a shrub was transplanted to a better location, all the pots were emptiedand sidewalks swept. Thanks to the Calvary youth and parents who got the job donein record time!

Centering Prayer: New Members Invited

Calvary’s centering prayer group meets via Zoom at 7 p.m. on the second and fourthThursday of the month. Our next meeting is October 8th. We are eager to welcomenew members. Centering prayer is a contemplative practice that has particular resonance duringthis time of social distance and upheaval. In centering prayer, we quiet our mindsand, through meditative silence, empty our Selves so the Holy Spirit can enter in.

The practice strengthens our connection to God, building resilience and wholenessnot only for ourselves but for the larger community. Each meeting includes 20minutes of centering prayer and a short and simple discussion component. Please contact Julie Roenigk (254-8208 or [email protected]), Barbara Toman(254-1034 or [email protected]) or Stephanie Barsness (951-8266 or [email protected]) before attending or if you have any questions aboutcentering prayer.

An important reminder from the Adult Faith Formation Team:

• StorySharing is a National church effort we’ve adapted specifically for Calvary.

• StorySharing is a spiritual practice that calls on the speaker to share theirpersonal story and on listeners to reflect on it in a mode of deep, intentionallistening. Six to eight participants will gather for an hour with a facilitator via Zoom.

• StorySharing fosters spiritual growth, community building, and sharedunderstanding of where we are on issues of racial justice and discrimination. Racialreconciliation is ongoing, intentional work that helps us move toward living into thefullness of God’s healing grace.

Flowers for the AltarUntil the day that we can all be together for worship again, we are reviving one ofour special traditions - the giving of flowers for the altar. These flower will brightenup the sanctuary, allow folks to find a way to participate in the worship process, andpossibly bring a smile to a parishioner living alone or feeling isolated. If you wouldlike to purchase flowers for an upcoming service, please contact Sue Einspahr [email protected] or by phone at 507-281-4107.

Share some joy with your Calvary family!
