With great joy and celebration our OLSH College community farewelled our Class of 2017 during the week commencing 16 October. Our Years 12’s had the opportunity to thank staff for their unwavering support throughout their time spent at OLSH at Monday’s ‘Thank You’ Morning Tea. On Wednesday, at the Fr Jules Chevalier Leadership of Handover Assembly, the 2017 Leaders passed the leadership of the College on to the 2018 leaders who will continue to guide the student body in the values and traditions of OLSH College. A Mass of Thanksgiving and Graduation Ceremony was held on Thursday night at St Paul’s Church with family, friends and many staff in attendance. Students received their graduation certificates and a blessed statue of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. Following the Mass and Graduation, celebrations continued with dinner together at Brighton International. A lovely meal was served and there were inspiring speeches from Principal, Anne O’Loughlin, Year 12 student, Nicova Mendonca, and Year 12 Parent, Madeleine Kelly-Oman. What a wonderful few days it has been for our graduates – we are so proud of you girls!

The OLSH College Community was blessed to have Sister Anne Gardiner AM with us during our Year 12 2017 Celebration week. Sister Anne shared her story of courage, conviction and listening from the heart with each year level, our families at Open Morning on 17 October and our community at the Fr Jules Chevalier Handover Assembly.

On 21 September both Ametur groups left Melbourne. When our group finally arrived in London we were ecstatic. From there, it was whirlwind of amazing and unforgettable experiences. One highlight was having a Director of the National Theatre lead us in a workshop. We focused on the novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time. We looked at some challenges the Director would have faced transferring it from a book to a performance and the ways to overcome this. We also examined ways to establish why each character is saying what they are saying. Another highlight was definitely seeing Much Ado About Nothing, a Shakespearean play, tour and workshop at the Globe Theatre. This performance was highly entertaining and was nothing like we had seen before. The tour and workshop afterwards really helped us to look at how performances are staged and who they are aimed at. Once we had looked at this it helped us to see why the space was designed, how it was used and how the actors used it. We also really enjoyed trying out new drama activities. Other performances we saw were the Lion King (which included a backstage tour), Mamma Mia and Alice in Wonderland (as a ballet). We then flew to Paris where we saw some incredible sights like the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Eiffel Tower and the Sacre Coeur Basilica. We also had guided tours of Claude Monet’s House and Gardens, Versailles and the Louvre. In Issoudun we had a very reflective day, learning about Jules Chevalier and where he spent many years. We then travelled back to Paris and flew home. Thank you to Ms Malone and Ms Canty for coming with us and giving us the best trip possible. Mia Jones Year 8 Student

On the 21 September, 9 girls embarked on a journey to Europe in which they would indulge in the culture, history and life of an Italian. We had the opportunity to visit Rome, Assisi, Orvieto, Florence and Venice, as well as Paris and Issoudun. Personally my favourite place we visited was Florence, as the architecture of the city is phenomenal whilst the use of colour stands out from the rest. When visiting each of these places, we got to take on new challenges and experiences which we may not do back at home. We experienced climbing bell towers and domes in churches, whilst getting a personal demonstration on how the famous Italian mask is made, as well as visiting monuments like the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. Some of highlights of this trip would have to be having the opportunity to complete the farm stay and have the experience of visiting the town of Orvieto and learning to cook, speak and learn more about the heritage and culture whilst exploring the different cities and everything they have to offer. We would just like to thank Ms Graffeo and Ms Malone for coming on this trip and for making this trip that much more meaningful. Katya Adkin Year 9

The final week of any school year is significant. For Year 12 this significance is

particularly special. Each student has the opportunity to reflect on her experiences,

efforts, achievements, transitioning to new experiences and seeking closure. These

reflections are intense and come with mixed emotions – excitement, sadness, gratitude,

fear, relief. This week enables the girls to reflect on their journey at OLSH College.

On Monday 16 October the Year 12’s had the opportunity to thank all the staff at OLSH

College during a morning tea which they provided.

On Wednesday the Fr Jules Chevalier Leadership Ceremony took place. An

opportunity for the current Year 12 leaders to hand over their leadership to our newly

elected leaders for 2018. It is an important ceremony giving thanks to these current

students and acknowledging it is time to pass on this role to a new student body with

blessings.

On Thursday we had a number of events. The day began with a celebratory theme.

The Year 12’s arrived in costume and shared the day partially as a year level with a

sense of fun and reflection, giving thanks for their year, opening time capsules prepared

in Year 7 and then sharing their sense of fun and gifts in a concert to the whole School.

In the evening, the Year 12 celebrations continued with their Graduation Mass, a pivotal

point in each student’s journey at OLSH College Each student was recognised as an

OLSH College graduate – a woman of heart, active faith, compassion, courage,

integrity, wisdom, prayer, independent thought, hope and resilience and transforming

vision. Following the Mass, the Class of 2017 Valedictory Dinner was held at Brighton

International. The event provided the students, their parents and staff with the

opportunity to acknowledge the past, present and the impending transition from OLSH

as a school student to a young adult.

The Final Farewell Assembly took place on Friday where the whole School community

gathered in celebration. Tradition and history play an important part in the life of any

OLSH student and this farewell reinforces the significance of a diverse range of

experiences in each individual’s life and the formal acknowledgement of meaningful

milestones. This event brings home the reality that their secondary school days are

almost over.

Following this farewell

each Year 12 student will

continue to focus on VCE

exam preparation and

VCAL studies completion

of competencies.

During this period of exams and assessment tasks it’s important to recognise triggers for

negative emotions. The following extract from “The Learning Curve” Planner explores

how students can create their own strategies to adopt a growth mindset.
