TRANSCRIPT
Dear Colleague,
The management of critically ill patients continues to evolve. Recent advances in biologycoupled with careful observations in patients have provided new knowledge of disease mech-anisms and identified potential targets for intervention. However, applying this informationto improve outcomes from critical illness is still a work in progress. Common problemsinclude identifying optimal targets and approaches for resuscitation to maintain tissueperfusion, defining the best therapeutic intervention to sustain organ function, knowing whento intervene with extracorporeal support techniques and when to initiate end of life care. Asystematic approach to this problem requires an understanding of the pathophysiologicmechanisms involved, techniques to ascertain the stage of the disease and it relationship tothe natural history, knowledge of the therapeutic potential and experience with the optimalstrategies that can improve outcomes. Care of the critically ill patient requires a constantupdating of knowledge, skills and application of best practices. The twelfth international con-ference on CRRT highlights the recent advances in our understanding of pathophysiology ofcritical illness, emerging strategies in the management of sepsis, multi-organ failure, acutekidney injury, technical advances in CRRT and the appropriate utilization of these techniques.
As in past years, we have invited internationally recognized experts to discuss several topicsthat reflect contemporary issues faced by the clinician treating patients in the ICU. A reviewof the pathophysiology of organ failure is complemented by information on how best to resus-citate patients. Kidney injury and its consequences, modulation of organ dysfunction withextracorporeal techniques and innovations in cardiac and hepatic support are other topicsdiscussed. The emerging field of biomarkers is covered in a series of lectures complementedby two workshops that will explore the utility of these markers for diagnosis, prognosis andmanagement of patients. New technology for the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of thecritically ill patient is now being utilized and its application is described. This year's programfocuses on providing practical information to translate new knowledge from the bench to thebedside. This is achieved with a mix of invited lectures, workshops, poster sessions and paneldiscussions. Specific topics on nursing care, nutritional support and other process of careelements are incorporated in different sessions to promote multidisciplinary understandingand collaborative approaches to patient care. A key goal of the conference is to equip partic-ipants with the most up to date and practical knowledge for patient care. Consequently, wehave introduced new “hands-on” workshops deigned to provide detailed instruction on theuse of specific equipment for extracorporeal support. More time has been allocated fornetworking to continue the tradition of multidisciplinary interactions, which are a highlightof this conference. As always, we hope to provide the right environment to foster learning andmutually beneficial communications and collaborations. We hope that you will join us toshare your knowledge and experience as it is through multidisciplinary interactions that wewill gain a better understanding of critical illness and it is only through our collective effortsthat we will improve the lives of our patients.
We look forward to welcoming you to San Diego for the twelfth time.
