TRANSCRIPT
March 2018 Volume 12, Issue 3
Dear CCU 'Ohana,
Typically, we refer to the week between Palm Sunday and Easter as
"Holy Week." But in its earliest iterations (in the third or fourth century) it
was actually called "The Great Week." I've been thinking about that
designation. Of course great can mean very good, but it can also mean
substantial, considerable, or significant. In that way, "the Great Week"
almost seems a better fit for the series of events which commemorates
Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem and his eventual death there...for indeed
they are consequential to the story of our faith.
Perhaps you've been following along with our Lenten sermon series on
"The Gifts of Mortality." We've been attempting to explore the wisdom to
be found in our human experience of death while maintaining a
connection to the real and difficult experience most of us have with
illness and loss. Maundy Thursday and Good Friday will be appropriate
capstones for this time of exploration: occasions set aside for
considering the meaning of Jesus' death, specifically, and his
instructions to love one another even in the shadow of that death.
To help us enter that story, we'll be hosting a special event on Maundy
Thursday this year, continuing in the tradition of collaboration with the
other Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregations on island. On
Thursday, March 29, from 6-8pm, we'll welcome our neighbors to share in
a potluck supper and we'll eat together while exploring the historical
underpinnings of the last supper Jesus shared with his disciples and the
ritual given as a gift to us in the sharing of communion. We'll also
participate in music and song. I hope you'll join for this new occasion, not
only for fellowship but so in following along with Jesus story we might re-
experience the events of this great week and emerge prepared to
celebrate the truly good news ready to greet us on Easter Sunday: that
our mortality is not the end of the story of our faith.
As always, I find myself grateful for your companionship and willingness
to come along on the journey. And I wish you all blessings.
With aloha,
Pastor Liz

"Give thanks in all circumstances."
1 Thessalonians 5:18
This month, we give a huge:
MAHALO to all who helped install our new floor! It
looks amazing and serves as a reminder to all of our
capacity to work together to help our building reflect
the beauty within! Special thanks are due to Ron
Seiple, Richard Smith, Rollo Scheurenbrand and
Paul Haring for their particular expertise, but to all
who helped out a HUGE MAHALO!
MAHALO to those who attended our February 3
concert fundraiser for Vespers!
MAHALO to those who provided beautiful flowers in
February. They help make our worship a delight!

Season of Life and for preaching to the topic on

OAHU, HAWAII
Tucked into a lush oasis on Oahu’s west side, Kahumana Organic
Farm and Retreat offers bold vision and relaxation in a holistic program that
gives guests a chance to eat well, practice yoga, embark on a healing journey,
learn about organic farming, and volunteer on the farm, which supports multiple
local, community initiatives--from community supported agriculture (CSA) and
championing sustainability to providing enrichment for the mentally disabled to
addressing problems of food deserts, hunger and poverty. Two retreat homes
feature 17 rooms that comfortably house groups or individuals and also provide
a nice launching point for exploring the island’s most serene beaches and epic
hiking trails. https://www.kahumana.org/
How about that?! We could have a retreat out there!
