Celebrant of the MassConfirmations will be celebrated by Archbishop Thompson. The information provided is relevant to the needs and preferences of the archbishop.

StipendsIt is customary that the archbishop receives a stipend for celebrating confirmation Masses at a deanery location and at SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral. When there is more than one parish, parishes should share the expense. The amount may vary, depending on the number of candidates and/or the travel distance, but the minimum suggestion is $150.00. The Archdiocesan Finance Office has asked that stipends for the Archbishop be sent through central payroll. When emailing central payroll please indicate his name, the date of the Mass and the amount he is receiving.

The Office of Worship gives a stipend to the master of ceremonies. Parishes do not need to give him an additional stipend.

Choosing a Confirmation Name A candidate may choose a Confirmation name or retain a recognized saint’s name given at Baptism. In either case it is important to have a saint’s name as part of the Confirmation rite. A Confirmation name is a permanent reminder which links the candidate with the way in which the mission of Jesus lives on in those special persons recognized by the Church as saints in its history. The process of researching the life of a saint can be an enriching part of the preparation program and can serve as the basis for reflection on the qualities of a present day witness for Christ. Family members and sponsors can assist the candidate in choosing a Confirmation name.

Letters to the ArchbishopAs part of the candidates’ preparation for the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation, the archbishop requests that each candidate submit a letter to him. This letter is meant to be more than just a statement from the young person asking for the sacrament. Since he cannot be a part of each and every formation program, the letters help the archbishop to see how the young people have been preparing for this celebration,

as well as for life strengthened by the Holy Spirit after the celebration. In addition, so many of the letters stand as a testament to faith and devotion of the young Church, a sign of hope for us all.

Since it is meant to address each young person’s own journey and preparation, the letter should not be a “form letter.” While some guidance may be given, it needs to stand as a composition of that individual. The candidates should state in the letter to which parish they belong.

The archbishop uses the information from the letters as a part of his homily, enabling him to speak to the experiences and needs of the candidates more personally. The archbishop does not use names from the letters in his homily so as not to embarrass anyone, aside from speaking about the selection of the saint name and why.

The letter must answer the following questions:

1. What does Confirmation mean to me? Why am I choosing to be confirmed?2. What saint's name did I choose and why?3. Whom did I choose for my sponsor and why?4. What did I do for my service hours? What did I learn/gain from the

experience?

The letters must be submitted to the Office of Worship by the due date found in chapter 2. They may always be submitted earlier.

Letters may be mailed, emailed, faxed, or left at the front desk of the Catholic Center to the attention of Christina Tuley, Office of Worship. The letters should be submitted as a parish group with a cover letter indicating the parish name, the name of the confirmation coordinator, and the date of confirmation.

Meeting with the ArchbishopTo further his connection with the young church, the archbishop wants to spend time with the candidates and their sponsors before the celebration of the Mass.

The host parish should determine a location large enough for the candidates and their sponsors to gather for the meeting with the archbishop. Candidates and sponsors should be instructed to gather in this space no later than 1 hour prior to the start of Mass. The archbishop will meet with them for approximately 50 minutes. Several adults should be identified to quiet the crowd and remain with them during their time with the archbishop.

When the archbishop has concluded his time with the candidates and sponsors, the adult coordinators should line up the candidates and sponsors to make their way to the church in an orderly and prayerful manner. They should go immediately to their seats.

Parents and guests should come directly to the church upon their arrival.

Photos with the Archbishop/CelebrantArchbishop Thompson will be available for photos after Mass.

Special NeedsAccessibility

It is highly recommended the host parish notify the other parishes of ramps, parking and seating for those with physical disabilities. Guest parishes should notify the host parish of any special needs.

Food allergies Parish coordinators should ask their candidates and families if they know of anyone

with a food allergy that will be attending Mass Arrangements should be made so that the parish coordinator or the person(s) provide

the host parish with low gluten hosts, approved by the USCCB A pyx with the host should be placed on the altar for the Liturgy of the Eucharist

Photography During Mass In the best interest of promoting good worship:

o No flash photography or videography with lights is permitted during the liturgy.o Photographers and videographers are not permitted to stand in the center aisleo Photographers and videographers should be advised not to interrupt the flow of the

liturgy or distract other participants.

ReceptionsIt is the choice of the parish(es) to have a reception.

Preparing a Worship Aid A worship aid is necessary, containing the texts for the Mass and music needed by the assembly. Please print enough worship aids for the entire assembly. You may use the equation of seven (6) guests per candidate (including the sponsor). It is always better to have too many than not enough.

Nametags for candidatesParishes must provide nametags for the candidates. Name tags must be worn on the candidate’s right side. It is best to distribute the name tags as the candidates gather for their meeting with the archbishop.

Contact sheet Parishes celebrating in a cluster are encouraged to be in contact as soon as possible. One person should be chosen as the overall contact person for the planning. This person will be responsible for communicating with the Office of Worship about details of the Mass. A coordinator of music should also be chosen. Once the above two people are chosen the contact sheet should be completed and returned to the Office of Worship immediately.

Selection of Readings and Proper Prayers in 2020 When allowed in the liturgical calendar, the parishes celebrating the Sacrament of

Confirmation in 2020 will use a standard set of readings from the Ritual Mass – For the Conferral of Confirmation.

The standard set of readings for 2020 are found below.

The proper prayers and the prayers of the faithful will be taken from the Rite of Confirmation.

The vestment color will be red.

CHAPTER 3 MUSIC FOR CONFIRMATION10

It is very important that the whole assembly be able to join in the singing of the responsorial psalm response, the Gospel Acclamation, Sanctus, Memorial Acclamation, and the Great Amen.

When choosing other music, the texts should generally reflect the readings chosen and the coming of the Holy Spirit. Since Confirmation is closely related to the other sacraments of initiation, texts that are based on the broader themes of Baptism, Eucharist, Resurrection, and the Holy Trinity are possible. Songs with themes of commitment, service, discipleship, and mission are also appropriate.

When Confirmation is celebrated on a day in the Octave of Easter, a Sunday of Easter or on the Ascension, the music chosen should also be in harmony with the readings of the day and the spirit of the particular season.

The cantor may conduct a brief period of musical preparation with the assembly before Mass, especially if a considerable number of people are unfamiliar with the music to be used for these sung parts.

Opening SongThe opening song chosen should also be in harmony with the readings of the day and the spirit of the particular season.

GloriaThe Roman Missal now calls for the singing of the Gloria whenever the Ritual Mass for the Conferral of Confirmation is used, even if the celebration takes place on a weekday during Advent or Lent. Even though it permissible for a choir to sing the Gloria alone, it is preferable to use a setting with an easy refrain for the congregation such as the Storrington Mass. The Chant Mass is also a possibility if most of the participating parishes are familiar with it.

Responsorial Psalm For Sunday or Solemnity celebrations, the proper psalm or an appropriate seasonal substitute should be used. At other times, Psalm 104 (Lord, Send Out Your Spirit) recommended.

Gospel Acclamation Use a familiar alleluia or the Storrington Mass acclamation with cantor or choir singing the verse.

Renewal of Baptismal PromisesThere is no sprinkling or singing of an acclamation after the renewal.

Anointing Depending on the number to be anointed, the music during this time could include choral music as well as a song with a refrain for the assembly. We estimate that it takes 10 seconds per candidate for the anointing. The music during this time should be performed at a moderate level of volume so as not to hinder the verbal communication between the archbishop, sponsor, and the one being confirmed.

OffertoryIf there has been a good amount of singing during the anointing, it might be preferable to use instrumental music at this time. Choral music is also possible.

Eucharistic Prayer Acclamations Please use either the Storrington or the Roman Missal Chant settings for the Sanctus, Memorial Acclamation, and Great Amen. The memorial acclamation may be sung twice. Both words and music should be included in the worship aid.

Communion Song The assembly should be invited to sing the refrain with the cantor or the choir singing the verses. If possible, a single song should be planned to accompany most of the communion procession, lengthened as needed by the use of instrumental interludes. A brief choral or instrumental piece may be added near the end of communion, but it should conclude shortly after the bishop has been seated and the altar has been cleared. Because of the length of the Mass with the Confirmation Rite, the addition of a SONG AFTER COMMUNION is not recommended.

CHAPTER 4 LITURGICAL MINISTERS

before the concelebrants. (Otherwise, this will be assigned to a concelebrating priest.)

Parish Life Coordinators (PLCs)PLCs are in the opening and closing processions after the servers (censor, cross, candles) but before the priest concelebrants. PLCs should have reserved seats. PLCs may fulfill any of the following ministries: Presenter of the Candidates, Lector, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion.

Gospel ProclaimerA concelebrant or a Deacon will proclaim the Gospel.

Ministers of Hospitality Adults are preferred, however mature teens may be chosen. Hospitality ministers should distribute worship aids and guide the anointing and communion processions.

Servers Five (5) servers are needed. For other celebrants, two servers are needed. Males and females may be selected for this ministry. Servers must have previous

experience and must be able to be attentive to the Master of Ceremonies.

LectorsCandidates, catechists or other adults may be invited to lector. Lectors should be well prepared and capable of strong proclamation.

Presenters of the CandidatesPresenters of the Candidates should sit close to the where the presentations will take place. Concelebrants that are presenting should sit in their assigned seats and come forward at the appropriate time.

Ministers of Holy Communion: As space allows in your church the following formula is recommended in determining the number of minsters need for Holy Communion:

Homily

Renewal of Baptismal Promises The Celebrant will invite the candidates to stand for the renewal of baptismal promises Candidates should respond “I do” in a loud and clear voice to each question

Laying on of Hands The Celebrant imposes hands over the group of candidates Concelebrants, from their places, join the Celebrant in the imposition of hands.

Anointing The Celebrant will stand on the peninsula in front of the altar. Ministers of Hospitality will guide the processions up to the celebrant When the candidate and sponsor reach the Celebrant: The sponsor will place his/her right hand on the right shoulder of the candidate. The sponsor clearly says the candidate's confirmation name to the Celebrant The Celebrant makes the Sign of the Cross on the forehead with Sacred Chrism as he

says:

Celebrant: N., be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit. 17

Newly confirmed: Amen. Celebrant: Peace be with you. Newly-confirmed: And with your spirit.

Then, the Celebrant shakes the candidate’s hand The candidate and sponsor exit the peninsula by the center steps They return to their seats by way of the center aisle

Notes: The concelebrants should remain at their places during the anointing. They do not leave the sanctuary to greet/congratulate the candidates from their parishes. When the anointing is completed, the celebrant washes his hands. The Prayer of the

Faithful does not begin until the celebrant introduces them

Prayer of The FaithfulThe following intercessions, provided within the Rite of Confirmation, will be used

For their parents and sponsors: that by word and example they may continue to encourage those whom they have sponsored in the faith to follow in the footsteps of Christ, let us pray to the Lord.

For the holy Church of God, together with Francis our pope, Charles our Bishop, and all the Bishops; that, gathered by the Holy Spirit, the Church may grow and increase in unity of faith and love until the coming of the Lord, let us pray to the Lord.

For the whole world: that all people, who have one Maker and Father, may acknowledge one another as brothers and sisters, without discrimination of race or nation, and with sincere hearts seek the Kingdom of God, which is peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, let us pray to the Lord.

For an increase of vocations to the priesthood and religious life: let us pray to the Lord.
