Dear Friends,

The legal industry is growing and changing in multi-dimensional ways: It’s a sentiment we hear time and time again in our outreach to alumni. Our goal at the University of Richmond School of Law is to prepare our students to navigate this rapidly changing sector.

Richmond Law’s new partnership with the Institute for the Future of Law Practice allows students to participate in a three-week, hands-on bootcamp covering disciplines that complement a traditional law school curriculum — such as business operations, project management, and technology. Next, they take those tools out on the job in paid, 10-week internships across the country. Recent placements include DHL Supply Chain in Columbus, Ohio, the financial technology company WealthForge in Richmond, and three national law firms: Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner, Thompson Hine, and Hermes Law.

“As one of the first schools selected to take part in this program, we’re excited to give our students the opportunity to develop these crucial skill sets,” said Jessica Erickson, Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Faculty Development.

Inside the building, focus is turning to developing a new program that will complement this initiative. The Program for Legal Innovation and Entrepreneurship will meld a shared first-year experience with curricular and co-curricular offerings in such areas as project management, data analytics, delivery of legal services, and design thinking. “Our goal is to develop in our students a mindset that’s both creative and entrepreneurial,” said

to the Challenge YOU ROSE TO THE CHALLENGE WITH TWO MATCHING GRANT OPPORTUNITIES THIS YEAR!

Dean Wendy Perdue joined with Michael Glasser and Henry

Jones of the Class of 1978 to issue a matching challenge of

$50,000 for new and increased gifts. After many alumni and

friends showed their support, the challengers upped the ante,

increasing the matching pool to $70,000! The heightened goal

was then not only met but exceeded, raising a total of $113,330 in

new and increased funds from 291 donors to support our students.

A second outpouring of support came thanks to the challenge

from Rick Klau, L’96, who pledged $100,000 in matching funds

to establish the Michelle Rahman Endowed Scholarship

Fund to honor the former Associate Dean of

Admissions. Together, 173 alumni and friends met

this challenge, raising $212,378 total to increase

access and affordability at the Law School

while honoring Michelle Rahman.

Did you know that 43% of the Class of 2019 tried a case or

argued a motion in court before

graduation? Armed with their

Third-Year Practice Certificates,

After this summer’s latest renovation, the lower level of

the Law School — popularly known as the Down Under

— features a new look and purpose. In addition to an

updated lounge space and new study room, the space

will now also house all three student-run journals —

offering plenty of opportunity for collaboration. This

new space will be a hub of student-centered life.

INTERNATIONALOur faculty are known for the individualized

attention they deliver in the classroom. But

you’ll find them making an impact on a much

wider stage, too. Take Professor Chiara Giorgetti,

for example. This year, she delivered two virtual

training videos to the United Nations Audiovisual

Library of International Law. She also presented

at the 10th International Conference on the New

Haven School of Jurisprudence in Hangzhou,

China, and participated in the meeting of the

Committee on the Procedure of International

Courts and Tribunals of International Law at the

Max Planck Institute in Luxembourg. Professor

Jim Gibson delivered a series of talks in China

and South Korea on the topic of intellectual

property law, while Professor Andy Spalding

helped build an anti-corruption curriculum for

the Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law —

the only law school in Bhutan.

In the building and around the globe, our faculty

law, will join the Richmond

Law faculty after serving

as a Climenko Fellow and

Lecturer on Law at Harvard

Law School. She earned

her J.D. at Harvard Law,

mathematics at Harvard

LOCAL COMMUNITYThanks to the leadership of Andy Nea, L’66,

and the support of over 100 attorneys, the

Pro Bono Estate Planning program has served

almost 600 clients through about 30 clinics

each year across Virginia since its inception in

2007. The key to the program is its simplicity:

Nea partners with community organizations

that serve populations in need. Prospective

clients fill out an easy questionnaire, then meet

with a pro bono attorney and volunteer law

student. An hour later, they leave with a will, a

power of attorney document, and an advanced

medical directive.

Supporting those attorneys and clients along

the way are law students who gain real skills and

experience. “It allows the law student to see a

case from start to finish, to actually interact with

a real person, and to produce real documents

and see the end of it,” said Nea. Plus, “it’s a

good thing for them to have a real taste of

the real world.”
