DEAN TO SPEAK AT FOUNDERS DAY GALA - MARCH 17, 2012
ty. As an analyst, Brigadier General Trainor helped devel-op the Installation Status Report that provides the Army a standardized means to assess infrastructure and environ-mental conditions on installations to support resource alloca-tion decisions. Brigadier General Trainor has applied deci-sion analysis methods in completing an organizational anal-ysis of the Army’s Installation Management Agency and in
assessing defense security coopera-tion programs.
As the 13th Dean of West Point, BG
Trainor explains that the best part of
his job has been teaching. When he
can, he still teaches engineering man-
agement, systems engineering, and
decision analysis. “I’m here to edu-
cate and inspire our cadets, and to
prepare them to serve in a complex
and uncertain world.” He says he en-
joys being in the classroom because
he’s energized by cadets’ enthusiasm
and idealism. He likes to get to know
students and feels a great deal of
respect and camaraderie toward
them. “They came to West Point will-
ingly, when our country was at war,
and they will most likely graduate in
a time of war,” Trainor says of the
cadets. “I really admire them for
that.”
When BG Timothy Trainor, WP Class
of 1983, became Dean in 2010 he became the youngest
Dean ever at age 49 (BG Jannarone was 51 in
1965). He’s also the first Dean to be married to another
graduate COL Donna Brazil, USMA ‘83. They have three
teenage children. Incidentally, BG Frederick A. Smith, Jr.,
Class of 1944 was 62 as Dean when BG Trainor was a
cadet in 1983, and had served in WWII and Korea.
Brigadier General Timothy E. Trainor, Ph.D., is the 13th
Dean of the Academic Board at West Point. Brigadier Gen-
eral Trainor's former position was Professor and Head of
the Department of Systems Engineering at the United States
Military Academy.
Brigadier General Trainor graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from West Point in 1983 and entered the Engineer Branch of the U.S. Army. As an engineer officer, he has served in oper-ational assignments around the world to include Germa-ny, Honduras, Fort Bragg, N.C., Fort Riley, Kan., and Sarajevo, Bosnia. BG Trainor deployed to Bas-rah, Iraq in the summer of 2007 and worked with the UK-led Provincial Reconstruc-tion Team in helping the pro-vincial Iraqi leaders improve their infrastructure revitaliza-tion plans. BG Trainor earned an MBA from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University and a Ph.D. in Industrial Engi-neering from North Carolina State University. He is a mem-ber of the Military Applications Society of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, the Military Operations Research Society, the American Society for Engineering Management and the American Society of Engineering Education. He is a Past President of Epsilon Mu Eta, the National Engineering Management Honor Society. BG Trainor currently serves on the Board of Fellows for the David Crawford School of Engineering at Norwich Universi-

Greetings West Point Society of DC (WPSDC) Members, your Board of Governors (BOG) has implemented some fundamental administrative changes to more efficiently provide the income to foster and advance the principles and mission of West Point in accordance with our WPSDC
Constitution.
Through your BOG’s efforts, the WPSDC membership sup-ports the West Point Admissions Team, the West Point Leadership and Ethics Conference, the West Point Parents Club, West Point Athletics and Cadet Clubs, the West Point Job Fairs and Career Networking events, the Joint Service Academy Business Committee Networking events, the West Point Women Career Networking events, as well as, our luncheons, newsletters, website, and directory. To fund these services and events, we have asked for your $40 annual membership dues. Nonetheless, our paying membership remains low. Of the 4,000 potential WPSDC members in the National Capital Region (NCR),
we have approximately 1000 paying members.
Many West Point graduates in the NCR persist in believ-ing that since they receive the WPSDC e-mails their mem-bership dues are paid up. The WPSDC e-mails go to all West Point graduates in the NCR that are in the West Point Association of Graduates (WP AOG) e-mail list.
The WPSDC member list is a subset of the WP AOG list.
To make up for our classmates’ shortfall in paying their WPSDC membership dues, your BOG continues to seek other sources of financial support for our mission such as the following: corporate sponsors for Founders Day, corporate job fair booths, corporate advertising in our newsletter and webpage, higher cost for attendance to WPSDC events, and increased attendance to our events by broadening our audience to other military school
graduates.
Moreover, the BOG has decreased funding for necessary budget items by partnering with WP AOG. For instance to cut our return postage costs, we transferred our WPSDC membership list and on line credit card mem-bership payments to the WP AOG. Now, all West Point graduates in the NCR can keep their address and e-mail current by notifying WP AOG at [email protected] . Accordingly, the WPSDC saves postage money on fewer stale addresses. Next, to increase WPSDC members’ awareness and monetary support of Army-Navy Sporting events played at Navy, your BOG has electronically
linked our local web site calendar at www.wpsdc.org with WP AOG’s web calendar at
www.westpointaog.org/page.aspx?pid=4866.
To complete these cost saving steps, the BOG needs the 4,000 WP graduates in the NCR to join the WPSDC by using WP AOG’s membership list and on line sign up at www.wpsdc.org. As an added incentive to join up, the WPSDC has created two admissions prices (WPSDC Members and non WPSDC Members) for Founders Day on March 17th. By joining the WPSDC attendees can
pay the lower price.
2012 is now here! Time to renew your membership with WPSDC - unless you are already a Life Member or have sent in your dues. Please be patient with us on posting the changes, since we are in the process of having WPAOG
handle the data base at West Point.
Currently there are 326 Life Members, 39 already signed up for 2012 and 718 still carried 2011. I realize some of you have already sent your dues but are not yet in the
base.
There are three ways to sign up: on line by going to our web page, clicking on Membership and using a credit card; by mailing a check to Amissville, preferably with a membership form; or at one of our functions, such as the lunch or a Young Grads get together, where forms are
usually available.
Dues are $40 for classes 1953 to 2003 and $20 for
2002 to present. Life membership is $500.

“A Society of One”
We’re into February and there are still folks on the courses in the local area! No sign of snow – but my cal-endar keeps telling me that “Gloom” is right around the corner. Time to get new grips on the clubs, run a tooth-brush around the soles of the golf shoes, and generally prepare for Spring golf! More importantly, it’s time to get your calendars updated for the Society’s golf out-
ings for 2012.
Our Black-Gold-Gray outing (all Army and guests) is scheduled for Thursday, the 31st of May at the Courses at Andrews Air Force Base. We’ll have the usual 1400hrs shotgun start, followed by dinner and awards around 1900hrs. We decided to return to Andrews AFB, vice keeping the event at Ft. Belvoir, based on a preponderance of feedback about the over-all “value” that Andrews pro-vides over Ft. Belvoir. We’ll see what Ft. Belvoir does, differently, this year to deter-mine if it’s worth trying
again in 2013.
We’ve con-firmed the date for the Commanders’ Trophy (Army-Navy-Air Force and guests) on the 13th of July. (Yes, we’re tempting fates by playing on Friday the 13th…) The event will be at the Heritage Hunt Golf and Coun-try Club, in Gainesville, VA. 0900hrs tee time – to try to beat the heat. We’ve had great luck with the folks running the course, not to mention the fact that we re-gained the trophy last year. (Navy has yet to win the trophy, while Army has won twice, and Air Force has won once.) Let’s keep this “…in the family…” and get our A-Team” players and guests to pencil in the date on
their calendars.
The Army-Navy game is set for Thursday, the 20th of September, at the Courses at Andrews Air Force Base. Regular 1400hrs tee-time and dinner, following. We’ve dominated this event, for as long as we have records, and it’d be great to continue the tradition. Please en-sure you have the date on your calendar and get your
friends to being with us that day.
One of the things we’d like to get into folks minds –
early in the calendar year, but not too late in the fiscal year – is the concept of “sponsors” for any/all of the out-ings. We’ve all been doing everything we can to weather the trying financial environment for the past few years, and we’re more than thankful for the continued participa-tion that you’ve demonstrated. If things are beginning to look a little brighter for you, your organization, or you firm - we’d like to ask you to consider providing some sponsorships for our outings. If you’re of that mindset,
please let me know ([email protected]).
We also wanted to remind you of the activities of the Alumni Glee Club (many of whom are long standing members of the Society) in being the “more experienced” version of the Ca-det Glee Club’s efforts to be “ambassadors” of West Point to the general public. We are routinely asked to honor our fellow graduates who’ve passed away, during services at Arling-ton National Cemetery. We completed our 2011 support to the Greater Capi-tal Area’s Honor Flight Program with a performance at their annual appreciation banquet in mid-January, and are already on the calendar for many of their 2012 flights. As we firm-up the dates, we’ll post them on the Society web-page calendar and encourage you to help us honor our WWII and Korean War vets as the Honor Flight teams bring them to DC for a day of memorial tours and good times. Of course, we’re pleased to be part of this year’s Founders Day celebration – hopefully with a little surprise for everyone. The Alumni Glee Club is also listed as singing the National Anthem for the Washington Nationals on Friday, the 18th of May. (The Alumni Glee Club website will be linked to the Society’s website, for those interested in learning more or considering joining the gang of 51 (+/1) graduates representing almost six dec-ades of graduating classes. We recently added five more to our ranks – and are pleased to report that the Class of 1975 leads the way, in terms of class representa-tion in the Club.) We’ve got a busy performance calendar shaping up for 2012 – and you’ll find that on the Socie-ty’s webpage calendar. If you feel like being a part of the Club, or want to be part of the audience, please
check out the link.
So – a busy Spring-Summer season coming up for both Golf and Alumni Glee Club events. Please keep an eye on the Society’s web page to stay up on the calendar.
We look forward to seeing you out there.
Go Army!
Spring 2011 Special Activities Update

General Cone warmed the crowd with a light-hearted
story about how the Secret Service treated him as a
young brigadier general shortly after the Iraq War
started. Cone spoke with passion and force about his
challenges facing him and the Army Leadership with the
steep drawdown and slashed budgets. Cone shared with
our Society about how the shift in strategy will affect
force structure and the balance between the institutional
army and operational army. As the Army downsizes,
Cone wants to ensure that combat veterans train our of-
ficers and soldiers at our institutional schools. “Leader
development isn’t just a TRADOC activity; it’s a mutually
shared responsibility between the institutional Army, op-
erational force and the individual… I talked with the U.S.
Army Senior Leader Development Program students,
about the responsibility of leadership and the importance
of strategic leadership. Having an understanding of the
strategic context and national security implications is an
important aspect of our strategic leaders. As leaders we
must develop and empower future strategic leaders for
the Army. GEN Cone went on to state, "While our opera-
tional forces, our battalions, our brigades and divisions are
out there winning the battles using the doctrine, training
and education and weapons that TRADOC provides, TRA-
DOC is busy making sure that they will be even more suc-
cessful in the next fight. It is an organization of unparal-
leled importance to the future of our Army and our nation."
General Cone was the first in the class to pin on four stars.

West Point Society of DC and West Point classes of 79
and 80 are hosting the fifth annual West Point Leader-
ship & Ethics Conference for DC Metro schools. VCSA
General Lloyd Austin '75 will be our WPL&E keynote
speaker. The event is recognized as one of the premier
youth leadership conferences in the country. Our confer-
ence encourages the development of young leaders of
character and spreads the word of the West Point story
in Leadership and Character. Over 80 schools and 400
plus delegates from the DC Metro will participate on
March 7-8 at George Mason University. West Point
Societies from across the US will participate in a half
day workshop just prior to the conference to prepare
them in “How to Run a Successful West Point Leadership
& Ethics Conference.” Joe Shafer ’86, who just joined
our committee, will lead our West Point Society effort
coordi-
nation
and
plan-
ning.
Our
intent is
to fran-
chise
this
leader-
ship
confer-
ence.
Our
conference is widely accepted in Virginia as a leader-
ship achievement comparable to selection for Boys
State/Girls State. Additionally, student delegates will
compete for $4500 total in scholarships available across
both days. Our cadets play a huge role in helping to
narrow the field of potential winners. West Point cadets
from the Cadet Public Relations Council (CPRC) and Re-
spect, Ethics and Leadership Club (REAL) will facilitate
and mentor small groups of students, walking them
through real-world ethical scenarios and leading discus-
sions on how best to resolve the given situation. The con-
ference affords an interactive leadership experience for
our cadets who lead high school students in ethical deci-
sion making throughout the day. We have a number of
cadets that come back to be cadet leaders in our confer-
ence because of their positive experience. West Point Ad-
missions and the Simon Center for the Professional Military
Ethic have supported this event providing CPRC and REAL
cadets and training. Our benefactors include: WPSDC, CPS
Professional Services; Lee Technologies by Schneider Elec-
tric; AFCEA DC Chapter; AUSA GW Chapter; Boeing;
George Mason University; Johnson Controls; Lockheed Mar-
tin (IS&GS); Quantum Research, Raytheon, SAIC, Seeds of

Perhaps unbeknownst to many, West Point athletes are often in the Washington, DC area competing against local teams in sports such as basketball, volleyball, swimming, and wrestling in the winter time. There is no better a way to show your support for West Point and the cadets than through your mere presence in the cheering stands. A small time commitment on your part
as a spectator means much to our cadet athletes.
To discuss the support for Army Athletics, several mem-bers of our DC Society met with Mr. Tim Volkmann, As-sistant Athletic Director for Annual Giving and Mr. Jason Butikofer, Associate Athletic Director for Development, on Saturday, 21 January at Chef Geoff’s. Afterward, well over a hundred alumni and guests mustered at Bender Arena to cheer on the Army Men’s Basketball team against American University. After a decisive vic-tory over Navy in Annapolis a week ago, the Black Knights fell short against the American Eagles setting the stage for an exciting rematch at home later in the sea-
son.
On Friday, 27 January, over 150 grads and guests converged on Sine Irish Pub in Pentagon Row for our Society’s annual New Year Kick off Happy Hour. Clas-ses represented ranged from ’69 to ’05, with exception-al attendance from ’74, ’83, ’94, ’97, ’02, & ’05. As a reminder, all class years are always welcome including their guests; a “young grad” is a living grad. A special show of gratitude to Mr. Ben Rodgers ’96 for coordinat-ing all of the details and hosting the well attended
event.
Our Society’s next event is our annual West Point Founders Day Gala at the McLean Hilton in Tysons Cor-ner. Ms. Nicole Manara ’99 and Mr. Rob Lalumondier ’99 will host this year’s pre-Gala party in one of the hotel suites. As always, beer, alcohol, wine, and snacks will be provided at no cost. Please RSVP for proper head count to: Nicole at [email protected]. After the Gala, a post party will resume in the hotel suite.
Stay tuned to your email for further information.
Future events for the West Point Society of DC include a baseball outing with the Washington Nationals on 18 May against the Baltimore Orioles. The West Point Alumni Glee Club will again perform the National An-them to kick off the festivities. We are negotiating the
prices which will again include a $10 vendor credit.
The West Point Society of DC along with the leadership
from our graduate base is constantly working to plan various events and activities for our members. We are currently in the process of refining our membership, event registration, and alumni information access; please be patient as we work to provide you improved services. In the meantime, if you would like to volunteer your time to lead an event or even to suggest ideas, please contact Mr. Richard Huh ’94 at [email protected]. Visit our West Point Society of DC website or Facebook page for pictures from past events
and information on future Society events.
As a reminder, to receive emails from the West Point Society of DC, alumni must update their address with AOG by emailing [email protected] with your name, class year, home address, and contact infor-
mation. Our Society has no control over the email list.

Joint Service Academy Business Mixers are monthly infor-mal evening events for grads of all five federal service academies. The events are aimed at helping grads who do business locally expand their network, find new cli-ents, new partners and new vendors. These events are entering their third year and have grown to three venues;
Herndon, D.C. and Tysons Corner.
Steve Kraner, West Point 1979, began organizing the
first event in 2009 as the result of a suggestion from
Dave Church, USNA 1967. The events are 5-8 PM and
people arrive throughout the evening. Since it’s informal,
there is no need to arrive at any particular time. About 7
PM the event host asks everyone to briefly introduce
themselves. As a result it’s common to see someone walk
up to another grad and say, “We should talk.” Steve
says that several attendees have reported successful con-
clusion of business as a result of contacts and referrals
made at a business mixers. This year we have arranged
that all events are free, due to the generosity of the
hosts. The first 2012 mixer in January was hosted by
Pete Snyder, USNA 90, at Carpool, a local bar in Hern-
don. About 40 grads attended over the course of the
evening. There was no fee to attend and everyone
bought their own drinks and food. As this is being writ-
ten, the second event, hosted by Ben Rodgers, West
Point 1996 in D.C. at his office was held on 7 February.
Ben arranged for his company, Bernstein Global Wealth
Management, to provide the space and refreshments. A
second event in February, on the 22nd, will be hosted by
Holly Svetz, USAFA 1980, at her office in Tysons Cor-
ner. Holly is a lawyer and her firm, Womble Carlyle
Sandridge & Rice PLLC, has agreed to provide the space
and refreshments this year. The full schedule of events
in 2012 is below. If you do business locally, you may find
attending a business mixer a good way to get the word
out.
If you’d like to be on the invitation list, send Steve an
email at [email protected]. Events are also post-
ed on the West Point Society of DC web page. Steve

West Point Parents Club of Maryland,
Washington DC, and Virginia
By Rod and Donna Gillis, Co-Presidents
The West Point Parents Club of Maryland, DC, and Vir-ginia kicked off the New Year by seating Board Members for 2012. We said farewell to Randy and Lisa Rotte whose two years as President set the standard, both in terms of dedication and energy. The club reached new heights under their leadership and they will be missed. The new board consists of Co-Presidents, Rod and Don-na Gillis (2013); 1st Vice President, Frank Dong (2015); 2nd Vice Presidents, Randy and Ann Cate (2014); Secre-tary, Dwight Davison (2014); Treasurer, Gwen Zecha (2014); Merchandise, Andrea Hansen (2013) and Robin Laffosse(2015); Membership, Kathie DeGeorges (2013); Transportation Coordinator, Ed Cragg (2009) and Ravin Howell (2015); Activities, Susan Leslie-Frasier (2014), LaDonna Howell (2015), and Jo Branham (2015); Af-ghans, Lisa Rotte (2012), Terry Mulligan (2011), and Donna Gillis (2013); Newsletter, Bob Atwell (2011), Kristin Gorak (2014), Becky Weber (2015); Listserv, Pete Hansen (2013); Boodle Bash, Susan Ranowsky (2012 & 2014). Joint Service Academy Ball, Mickie Cunningham (2013) and Ann Marie Stetekluh (2015). We have as-sembled a great mixture of class years to ensure the club
maintains continuity.
The club has a year jammed packed with upcoming activities. First is the historic WPPC MDDCVA Boodle Bash. On February 12th mem-bers will converge on the ranch of Mike and Liz Weigand in Maryland to assem-ble boodle boxes full of brownies and other goodies to deliver to the entire corps of cadets. We are proud to be able offer such grand cheer during the gray days of winter on the Hudson and very much appreciate
the Weigand’s for hosting this event again this year.
March will be equally as busy as we have our Spring So-cial at the Crystal City Sports Pub. The focus of the meet-ing will be on the upcoming graduation. We have a pan-el consisting of parents of recent graduates who will share lessons learned at graduation festivities and beyond. Additionally, we hope to have a representative from the Army to address how the service will handle the upcoming personnel reduction and its effect on current West Point
cadets.
We will continue to work closely with the West Point ad-ministration and the WPSDC throughout the coming year
as we strive to maintain our goals to:
Enhance the image of the United States Military Academy in the local area
Provide a means of communication between the Academy and cadet parents
Provide fellowship among parents whose sons or daughters are undergoing a rigorous military training program
Promote interest in attending the USMA
Your local Admissions Team has been busy assisting candi-dates for the Class of 2016. Application deadline this year was 29 Feb. but recently the class is full before the deadline! Last year we saw a spike of over 2,000 more applications than in years past so we had a 9% rate for offers of admission. We are tracking to have over 15,000 ap-plications this year (an increase of over 1,000 from last year) and we will have a class size of 1,150. This will mean an acceptance rate of around 7.6%. Furthermore, the high number of fully qualified candidates means very few medical waivers are being granted. Our key advice to any candidate is to get their applications in early and the DODMERB medical exam done as soon as possible. Medical issues identified in the exam must be resolved
quickly.
We will soon be focusing on the Class of 2017 with local
high school college nights aimed at Juniors. Likewise, we
will host a candidate reception for Seniors accepting our
offer a few hours before Founder's Day. If you arrive
early you should swing by and meet some of these incred-
ibly talented candidates! On 10 May we will host our
Spring By-Invite with MAJ Tolman from West Point speak-
ing to interested candidates.
