Faculty of Arts & Sciences Meeting September 15, 2016

The meeting came to order at 4:06 p.m., with Dean Barbara Schaal presiding. A motion to approve the minutes of the April 20, 2016 meeting passed by voice vote. Arts & Sciences Updates – Barbara Schaal, Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences

Upcoming Debate on October 9, 2016. The debate will be on a Sunday and this will minimize disruption to classes. Any tickets will be given to students by lottery. We expect protesters and there will be enhanced security on campus. They will have a designated area across the street. We also expect over 4000 media reporters on campus. Have your ID on you that week.

Arts & Sciences Master Plan: A 10-15 year master plan is being developed so there will be people on campus looking at space use. We need space for new tenure track faculty to expand programs with international stature.

Buildings/Renovations: University College will temporarily move to West Campus while January Hall is renovated. Thanks to Seth Graebner for 3 years of service as secretary and parliamentarian for the Faculty of Arts & Sciences. Dean Schaal introduced Anthony Tillman, Assistant Provost for Student Success Dr. Tillman arrived July 1, 2016 and has already launched the Deneb STARS (Sustaining Talented and Academically Recognized Students) Program as of August 25, 2016. The program supports Pell Grant Recipients. Staff include Harvey Fields and Scott Jacobs. This year there were 238 Pell recipients in the incoming class. (There are ca. 700 in Arts & Sciences). 172 were selected for the STARS program (162 Pell, 8 Enterprise, and 2 Kipp). There is a core group of 60 that the office is working with. The structure includes: 4 years of support, division of the entire group into 3 smaller Pods, Upper class peer mentors, and 4 pillars (scholarship, leadership, service, and integration). Some programming includes lunches at Ibby’s, talks with faculty and administrators about their academic journeys. The office of Student Success will also work on: The Equity Index to identify extra-educational opportunities and reduce barriers to access. Appreciation of Cultural Wealth and a positive appreciation for everything that every student brings to campus. Insure access to High Impact Educational Practices such as study abroad and research internships. A Four year framework to enhance deep learning and deep involvement in the campus community. Update on University Librarian Search – Peter Kastor, Chair, Department of History The search committee met with Parks Executive Search firm and held two open meetings with library staff. Artsci members of the committee are Bill Tate, Joe Ackerman, Joe Loewenstein, Peter Kastor, plus faculty from other Danforth campus schools, 3 library staff and a member of the Board of Trustees. Peter reminded us of the expectation of confidentiality while candidates visit campus. A faculty member asked if the search committee will meet with the ArtSci faculty for our input. Lisa Siddens answered that “this is that meeting”.

Affirmative Action Monitoring Committee FY16 report – Himadri Pakrasi, Arts & Sciences Affirmative Action Monitoring Committee reported that of 19 searches this year, there were 15 accepted offers. There were also 3 target of opportunity hires. Among these 18, there were 9 women and 3 underrepresented minorities. The applicant pool was composed of 1/3 female, 2/3 male, and 6% underrepresented minorities. The candidates invited to campus typically include 2:1 male:female ratio. But this year there was a 1:1 ratio among the visiting candidate pool and a 1:1 ratio among the hires. Underrepresented minorities typically comprise 13% of the offers, but this year they comprised 17%. Curriculum Committee Report and Vote – Todd Decker, Arts & Sciences Curriculum Committee Chair presented the new and revised courses that had been sent to the faculty as an attachment. A faculty member asked how to correct typos. Todd Decker answered that one should contact the registrar. He also noted that the new sociology major requires 33 credits. A faculty member asked how this compares to other majors and Dr. Decker answered that 30 credits is typical. Course changes were approved by faculty by unanimous voice vote.
