DEAN IVORY: A STUDY IN VERSATILITY

By Tom Peacock

Radlett is generally associated with the leafy streets and luxury

sports clubs befitting one of London=s most exclusive commuter

towns. This year, though, the Hertfordshire enclave could also

boast a top-class racehorse as Librisa Breeze (GB) (Mount

Nelson {GB}) prepares for the first of what could be many

overseas assignments.

The grey has already made his mark at the highest level,

rectifying a string of what-ifs in the G1 QIPCO British Champions

Sprint S., and is most likely to reappear in 2018 on Dubai World

Cup night.

Precise plans have still to be finalised between owner Tony

Bloom and trainer Dean Ivory, who is about to allow his stable

star back on the gallops at Harper Lodge Farm.

AHe had a break and I will probably start to do a bit with him

this week,@ said Ivory. AI=d have thought Dubai would be the

idea, but we=ll have to decide the best course of action. What

we=d do is just give him a gallop here anyway, he ran a blinder

first time up for me last year, where he was very unlucky and

I=m sure he would have gone very close otherwise.@

MAGICS BOOK 2 POSTS GAINS A filly (lot 1001) by Not a Single Doubt (Aus) led the way to top

the single-session Book 2 of the Magic Millions Gold Coast

Yearling Sale on Sunday at A$280,000. The 158 sold grossed

A$10,537,000, bettering last year=s edition of A$10,201,800,

while both the average, a new record at A$66,690 (+4.7%), and

median A$50,000 (+11.1%) also increased. The clearance rate

also rose four ticks to 84%, versus 80% for 160 head in 2017.

Prepared by Grandview in Queensland, the bay caught the eye

of Henry Plumptre, who was buying on behalf of Brendan and Jo

Lindsay. The Lindsays tenure at New Zealand=s Cambridge Stud

will commence in April.

AShe=s such a lovely individual,@ Plumptre said. AIt=s been a

fantastic sale and we=ve been looking for the right filly and she

fitted the bill. I thought she was a sweet filly with a great

attitude. The Not a Single Doubt yearlings sold very well over

the first four days and this filly really appealed.@ Cont. p5

Librisa Breeze & his jubilant connections

on British Champions Day | Racing Post

Dean Ivory with Tropics | Racing Post

Dean Ivory Cont. from p1

That effort to finish fourth in the G1 Diamond Jubilee S.

prompted several other occasions when Librisa Breeze=s hold-up

style got him into trouble. The tactics finally paid off at Ascot

and opened up new frontiers for the Newsells Park-bred gelding.

He was being considered for Hong Kong in December until

suffering a minor setback and the lucrative autumn

championship events in Sydney have even been mentioned in

dispatches.

AI=d be a bit concerned about travelling him too far for the first

time, given so many things that can go wrong,@ Ivory explained.

AThere=s the option of going back to Australia in their spring, our

autumn. He likes a bit of cut in the ground, he should get it

either time he=d go, but it=s a long way and there are lots of

questions to be asked.@

Ivory=s personal relationship with Group 1s had been fractious

prior to Librisa Breeze appearing. Old favourite Tropics

(Speightstown) had missed out in the same Ascot event three

years earlier and suffered an even more agonising defeat to

Muhaarar (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) in the G1 July Cup.

That horse=s exploits, along with those of Sirius Prospect (Gone

West), have seen the 55-year-old climb from the lower rungs to

becoming one of the go-to trainers of sprinters. So much so that

Bloom, Brighton & Hove Albion chairman and fabled figure from

gambling circles, decided to send Librisa Breeze into his care. By

that time, his 90,000gns purchase from the Tattersalls

Horses-in-Training Sale in late 2015 had a couple of minor wins

to his name.

AWe were starting to improve, getting better class horses and

that was obviously noticed,@ he said. AThe owners came round

the yard, we=ve got a lovely set up here and a friendly

atmosphere, he just slotted in. I always thought he was going to

be a nice horse but it was too early to know. I thought he=d

maybe be a listed winner but not a group horse. We ran him, he

broke the track record at Wolverhampton, but he wasn=t quite

right afterwards. Once we got him going again we could really

start to see true ability.@

AHe's one of those that seriously has no quirks at all,@ said

Ivory. AHe=s just a lovely horse, a nice person. He=s in a stable

outside my office, right next door to Tropics, and when people

come in, he likes to see them. He=ll call you if [he] wants a mint

or a carrot, or just a bit a fuss. Lots of horses don=t talk to you,

but he does.@ Cont. p3

Dean Ivory Cont.

Ivory moved to the farm aged 11 when his father Ken, a

renowned trainer of sprinters and sharp 2-year-olds, was

developing it into what is now--a 115-acre private premises.

Ivory Jr., who made his own way in the real world and

established a transportation company, was initially a reluctant

successor in 2002.

AI never wanted to be a horse trainer, it was the last thing in

the world,@ he said. AI had my own business, was quite

successful and enjoyed it. I used to buy one or two horses, dad

used to train them. He wanted a bit of time away, went to Spain

for six months, and asked me to look after the place. Then he

said he was going to pack up. I said >You can=t, we've done this

and that, there are all the gallops=. He said >If you want to take it

over, take it over=. I got it on grandfather rights, but I went to

the British Racing school and maybe got a few new ideas.@

He continued, AI have a lot more patience than my father does,

but in the earlier days, you had a gun to your head. With little

horses to beat the big boys, you had to get them out early and

there was a lot of repetition work. I=m not quite like that. You

can=t wave a magic wand and make a horse better than it is, but

my belief is that it=s all about confidence, then you can do

everything.@

Ivory=s methods appear representative of the unconventional

route he has followed. He is a great believer in building up

endurance and has to box clever in late spring, when his yard is

particularly susceptible to pollen.

AIf you came to the yard, you=d think I=m training them like

National Hunt horses,@ he chuckled. AI haven=t got just a

four-furlong gallop and up they go, we=ve got a mile all-weather

surface, right the way to the top. You=ll think I=m nuts but with

some of the sprinters, I=ll even run them over a mile two, a mile

four. What it=s about is getting their lungs working, opening

them up and teaching them how to breathe. There=s no rocket

science to that.@

AI think it comes into play at the racecourse when they=re a bit

wound up and nervous,@ he said. AIf they can breathe it just

warms them up nicely.@

Ivory also believes this programme can help Librisa Breeze mix

different trips, adding, AHe=s bred for a distance--I wouldn=t

mind him running over a mile two--but his ideal is seven to nine

furlongs to a mile one. If you can=t find the races, you=ve got to

be a bit versatile. It=s like school--you might be good at sport and

just take up a different sport but really you could be very good

at history.@

AAlthough we=ve won one of the top Group 1s, that=s a stiff six

and he=s not really a six-furlong horse,@ he said. AYou=ve got to

be patient and use that turn of foot. The minute you switch a

horse off, I don=t think the trip comes into play.@ Cont. p4

Dean Ivory Cont.

Ivory=s 38 winners in 2017 was

one short of his best, but

prize-money of over ,900,000

was easily a record. Happy with

a number between 50 and 60,

he has his eye on greater quality

in 2018.

AI=m never hard on them as

2-year-olds, I like the

3-year-olds, as I feel you get a

lot of weight for age and they

get stronger as long as you look

after them,@ Ivory explained.

AWe bought a nice little filly who

was fourth in a Group 3 called

Yolo Star (Ire) (Society Rock {Ire}), and there=s a nice one who

came from John Gosden=s yard called Yimou (Ire) (Kodiak {GB}.@

There is also Eirene (GB) (Declaration Of War), a juvenile listed

winner who took sixth in the G1 Cheveley Park S.

AShe=s obviously one I=m very excited about,@ he said. AShe=s

put on a lot of condition and I=m in no rush, but I think we=re

going to have a lot of fun with

her.@

Many of the old guard

including useful handicapper

Stake Acclaim (Ire) (Acclamation

{GB}) are returning a little later,

with Stewards= Cup victor

Lancelot Du Lac (Ity)

(Shamardal) easing back into

work.

ALancelot won listed races in

January and February last year

but we gave him a bit longer this

time,@ he said. AYou=ve got to run

three times to get into Lingfield

at Easter and that=s not the be-all and end-all. He=s so versatile,

we don=t have to go for those sorts of races.@

Given the way Dean Ivory has segued from businessman to

top-flight trainer, versatility seems to be a running theme.

A A$45,000 in utero purchase out of the Inglis Australian

Broodmare and Weanling Sale, the daughter of Miss Victoria is

well-related, as her dam is a half-sister to G2 Silver Slipper S.

hero Domesday (Aus) (Red Ransom). According to Plumptre, she

will be sent to Scone for breaking and would eventually be

placed with either a Melbourne or Sydney trainer.

The second dearest yearling on the day was lot 916, a filly by I

Am Invincible (Aus). Consigned by Yarraman Park Stud, the bay

is out of Australian listed heroine Devoirs (Aus) (Dehere), in turn

out of New Zealand Group 2 winner Velasco (Aus) (Flying Spur

{Aus}), who was also third in the G1 Sires= Produce S. Devoirs is

also a half-sister to Australian Group 3 hero Debellatio (Aus)

(Smart Missile {Aus}).

A trio of colts brought A$200,000--a son of Rubick (Aus) (lot

899), from Daandine Stud and lot 955, a colt by Husson (Arg)

from Widden Stud, both went the way of Orbis Bloodstock,

while lot 1058, a Rosari Farm-consigned son of Dissident (Aus)

was knocked down to Ben Currie/Ontrack Thoroughbreds.

AThe momentum carried through to Book 2 which was to be

expected on the back of the record breaking Book 1 sale,@ said

Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox. AThe highlight of

Book 2 was the wide and varied buying bench which

participated across the board in a sale which cleared over 84%.

It=s been a fantastic five days of selling here on the Gold Coast

and I want to thank all of our supporters, breeders, buyers and

MAKER MAGIC ON DISPLAY

The Week in Review, by Bill Finley

Back in 2015 when Mike Maker claimed Shining Copper

(Aragorn {Ire}) for $62,500 for Ken and Sarah Ramsey the

expectations were modest. They wanted the horse not so much

for where he finished but how he started. He was claimed to be

a rabbit for the Ramseys' multiple Grade I winning ridgling Big

Blue Kitten (Kitten's Joy). That Shining Copper has now

developed into a graded stakes winner in his own right would be

a surprise, if not for the incredible track record of his trainer.

As grass racing has continued to grow in the U.S., no trainer

has figured out how to take advantage of the multiple lucrative

opportunities on the turf better than Maker. Not only does

Maker win a bundle of grass stakes races, he often does it with

former claimers.

Since 2011, Maker has won graded stakes race on the grass

with 13 horses that he claimed. Shining Copper, who was

claimed by Maker, transferred to Chad Brown and then returned

to his old barn last year, joined the list Nov. 23 when he won the

GIII River City H. at Churchill Downs. For Brown, he finished third

in the GI Arlington Million and second in the GI Gulfstream Park

Turf H., but did not win a graded stakes.

Maker's modus operandi is straightforward. Every one of 13

eventual graded stakes winners were claimed for somewhere

between $35,000 and $62,500.

Shining Copper | Kenny Martin

The Week in Review (cont. from p1)

Twelve of the 13 already had established form on the turf

when claimed. Maker, apparently, saw some potential in these

horses that their prior connections overlooked or realized better

than most that the gap in grass racing between high-class

claimers and graded stakes company is a small one.

Shining Copper has won nine times and earned $817,169--

most of it coming after the

claim by the taciturn trainer--

but it is far from Maker's

biggest success story.

His list of claimers turned turf

monsters is topped by the

following:

--Al's Gal (English Channel):

The mare was claimed for

$35,000 for the Ramseys in

2015 and went on to win the

GI E.P. Taylor S. a year later.

The Ramseys parlayed that win

into another big success at the

sales, selling Al's Gal for

$800,000 at the 2016

Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Mixed sale.

--Bigger Picture (Badge of Silver): The gelding was claimed byMaker in 2015 for $32,000 on behalf of Three Diamonds Farm. Since, he's won two stakes, including the GI United Nations in2017.--Da Big Hoss (Lemon Drop Kid): He was taken for $50,000 in2015 by Maker and Skychai Racing Ltd. He's since won sevenstakes races and his career earnings are $1,510,756, most of itcoming under Maker's care.

--King David (Hat Trick {Jpn}):Then three, he was claimed for$35,000 in 2012 and won theGI Jamaica H. in his next startat odds of 28-1. "Mike has a knack, a naturalability to look at horses andpick them out and be able tomove them up in class andchange their running stylesome," said Harvey Diamond, apartner in Skychai Racing. "Itworks both ways. Sometimesone of us will come up with ahorse and sometimes he does.Sometimes, it's a case wherehe has been following a horse

for a while and just waiting for the right opportunity."

Firenze Fire | NYRA photo

For Skychai, Maker also claimed Special Ops (Big Brown) for

$50,000 in June. The 7-year-old wasn't able to add much to the

story Saturday when sixth in the $125,000 Col. E.R. Bradley

Handicap at the Fair Grounds,

but you won't get any

complaints from the Shychai

team. Since the claim, Special

Ops has won the $75,000 West

Virginia Speakers Cup at

Mountaineer and the $125,000

Claiming Crown Emerald at

Gulfstream.

Maker, a former assistant to

D. Wayne Lukas, went out on his

own in 2003. Ironically, at the

start of his career, he was

anything but a grass trainer. In

2006, his barn won 98 dirt races

from 194 starters and only three

turf races. He started just 16

horses on the grass that year. By

last year, the transformation

was complete. Maker went 126 for 677 on the grass and 90 for

432 on the dirt.

Firenze Fires in the Jerome It may be only mid-January and the top two juveniles from last

year, Good Magic (Curlin) and Bolt d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) have

yet to make their 3-year-old

debuts, but it's been far from a

sleepy few weeks for the

sophomore class.

Two meaningful preps for the

GI Kentucky Derby were run on

Saturday, with the Jerome at

muddy Aqueduct leading off.

The heavy favorite, Firenze Fire

(Poseidon's Warrior) had an

up-and-down campaign last

year but when he was good he

was outstanding. His win over

eventual GI Breeders' Cup

Juvenile winner Good Magic in

the GI Champagne S. stands out

and is enough to make him one

of the leading 3-year-olds of

2018. Sent off at 45-100, his narrow half-length win in the

Jerome may not look that impressive on paper, but he had to

overcome a difficult trip. Five others jockeys fell asleep while

Paco Lopez was able to get Seven Trumpets (Morning Line) to

the lead in dawdling fractions of :25.01, :50.81 and 1:16.72.

With his mount last a half-mile into the race, jockey Manuel

Franco left Firenze Fire with a lot to do. That he was able to run

down a pretty good horse in Seven Trumpets and was so game

in victory are positive signs.

At the Fair Grounds, Instilled Regard (Arch) was an easy

3 3/4- length winner of the GIII Lecomte S. for trainer Jerry

Hollendorfer and owner Larry Best. It was the first stakes win for

the colt and the best sign yet that Best will likely get a nice

return on the $1,050,000 investment he made when buying

Instilled Regard at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company 2017

March Sale of 2-year-olds in training. He was third in the GI Los

Alamitos Futurity in his prior start.

Another winner was the Los Alamitos race, which is now

looking like one of the toughest 2-year-old races run last year.

Since, >TDN Rising Star= McKinzie (Street Sense), who was

placed first through disqualification, has also come back to win

impressively in the GIII Sham S. Solomini (Curlin), who was

declared the winner via a stewards' ruling, has yet to race this

year.

Foreigners Dominate WHOA Supporters English-born trainer Graham Motion joined the Water Hay

Oats Alliance (WHOA) last week in support of the group's efforts

towards passage of The Horseracing Integrity Act. Motion said

he joined WHOA because the group is pushing for a national

governing body with uniform rules and penalties that are in sync

with international rules of racing (IFHA) bringing transparency

and integrity to U.S. racing. It may be wishful thinking that the

sport will ever come together to bring about the reforms that

WHOA wants, but it certainly doesn't hurt that WHOA has added

someone as respected as Motion is to its list of horsemen

supporting its battle.

The list of trainers that are on board with WHOA is emblematic

of the deep divide between North America and the rest of the

world when it comes to medication. Motion became the fifth

active North American-based trainer to join the group. The

others are Jonathan Sheppard, Michael Dickinson, Roger Attfield

and Neil Drysdale.

All were born in the U.K. With the recent death of Jack Van

Berg, not one U.S. born trainer has come out in support of

WHOA.

Four others trainers have pledged their support. They are Alec

Head, Criquette Head-Maarek, John Gosden and Gai

Waterhouse, two French trainers, an Australian and an

Englishman.

Big Names in Town for Smarty Jones(cont. from p1)

GIII Sham S. Jan. 6],@ Baffert said. A I thought I would bring him

[to Oaklawn] and see how he handles the shipping and really see

if he can go two turns.@

Baffert has plundered the Derby preps at Oaklawn in recent

years, winning six local 3-year-old stakes over the past five

seasons.

Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen is more of a regular in Hot

Springs and has a pair of colts by the late Scat Daddy entered in

the Smarty Jones. Combatant, second behind Greyvitos in the

Dec. 17 Springboard Mile, and Tap Daddy, a two-time winner on

turf, will both ship in from the Fair Grounds.

Robert LaPenta=s Navistar (Union Rags) was entered in the

Smarty Jones for trainer Todd Pletcher, but is expected to

winter weather in the Midwest, according to a report from the

Daily Racing Form. To view the field for the Smarty Jones, please

Gun Runner works at Fair Grounds | Hodges /Amanda Hodges Weir

GUN RUNNER, STELLAR WIND CONTINUE

PEGASUS PREPS GI Breeders= Cup Classic winner and leading 2017 Horse of the

Year candidate Gun Runner

(Candy Ride {Arg}) had his final

major workout for the Jan. 27

$16-million GI Pegasus World

Cup Invitational Sunday

afternoon, working six furlongs

in 1:11 flat at the Fair Grounds.

Working in company with

regular workmate Gettysburg

(Pioneerof the Nile), Gun

Runner was clocked galloping

out seven furlongs in 1:23.40

and the mile in 1:37 flat under

jockey Florent Geroux, as they

prepare for the Jan. 27 World

Cup. The Fair Grounds clockers

timed his interior splits as

:12.30, :24.20, :36.10, :48.10 and :59.20. Gun Runner started off

a little more than a length behind Gettysburg, pulled alongside

on the turn and drew off in the stretch.

AThat was great,@ said David Fiske, Winchell=s longtime racing

and bloodstock manager, in a post-workout interview with TVG.

AThat was kind of a typical two-weeks-before-the-race

Asmussen work. Usually that=s a big work, kind of sharpen them

up. He=ll get another easy

half-mile when he gets to

Gulfstream, probably next

Monday or something. But

man, he looked pretty sharp to

me.@

Gun Runner is slated to fly to

Fort Lauderdale Thursday.

Back in Florida, Stellar Wind

(Curlin) continued to impress

trainer Chad Brown with her

preparation for the Pegasus,

breezing five furlongs in

1:00.80 at Palm Meadows. The

breeze was the 6-year-old

mare=s sixth workout since

joining Brown=s stable shortly

after being purchased for $6 million by the Coolmore partners at

Keeneland November.

AShe=s all class--we=re not trying to reinvent the wheel here. We=re just trying to keep her happy and she=s been a real soundhorse since arriving,@ Brown said. AShe was obviously well taken

care of her whole career. She=s been just a real pleasure to havein the barn. She=s a terrific addition to our stable.@ Also on Sunday, MGISW West Coast (Flatter), considered thefavorite to win the Eclipse Award for 2017's champion 3-year-old male, worked six furlongs from the gate handily in abullet 1:12 flat at Santa Anita for trainer Bob Baffert. The coltworked in company with Cat Burglar (Unbridled=s Song), whowas clocked in 1:12.20. AHe worked well,@ said trainer Bob Baffert, who had DraydenVan Dyke aboard for the drill. AI=m happy about it. He neededcompany, because he=s sort of a lazy work horse.@ Baffert said West Coast will work once more in Arcadia nextweek before shipping to Florida.

INSTILLED REGARD EXITS LECOMTE WELL

OXO Equine LLC=s Instilled Regard (Arch) emerged from his

victory in the GIII LeComte S. at Fair Grounds Saturday in fine

condition, according to Christina Jelm, assistant to Hall of Fame

trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. Acquired by owner Larry Best for

$1.05 million at the OBS March 2-year-old sale, the colt

continued to return on that investment with a convincing

3 3/4-length score.

AI would say he came out better than he did going in,@ Jelm

said. AHe was not tired at all and it was as if he went out for a

regular morning gallop. He wouldn=t have blown out a candle

after the race. He wasn=t breathing hard and he kind of wanted

to go around there again. He took to the track very well.@

Instilled Regard=s win gave Best his first ever graded stakes

victory.

A[Best] educates himself to the extreme and he really does his

research,@ Jelm said. AAfter this, I think he=ll come up with some

ideas and then Jerry will have some ideas since he has done this

for a while, but they will come up with a plan for the next step

moving forward. It=s apparent that the horse gets over this

surface well and it didn=t take anything out of him. If anything, it

put a lot more into him. It put a lot more confidence into him

and took his fitness level to a higher level. He=s a very

professional horse and very classy.@

Following his LeComte score, Instilled Regard currently sits

sixth on the Kentucky Derby qualifying points leaderboard with

14 points. Trainer Steve Asmussen ran second, third and fourth

in the LeComte with favored Principe Guilherme (Tapit),

Snapper Sinclair (City Zip) and Zing Zang (Tapit), respectively,

and said the trio would all be considered for the Feb. 17

GII Risen Star S., among other spots.
