Felix MENDELSSOHNA Midsummer Night’s DreamThe Fair Melusine, Concert Overture No. 4, Op. 32; A Midsummer Night’s Dream, incidental music to the play by Shakespeare, Op. 61; The Hebrides, Concert Overture No. 2, Op. 26

Camilla Tilling, Magdalena RisbergSwedish Chamber Orchestra, Swedish Radio Choir, Thomas Dausgaard

Following a series of acclaimed recordings of nineteenth-century music Thomas Dausgaard and his Swedish Chamber Orchestra turn to Felix Mendelssohn. The team’s latest offering unites three of the composer’s four celebrated concert overtures, written between 1826 and 1835. The earliest of the three – A Midsummer Night’s Dream – was composed by a seventeen year old Mendelssohn, and revised later to include additional incidental music for a stage production of the play. Written for soloists, women’s choir and orchestra, the complete Midsummer Night score is included here. The disc opens with the last of the four overtures to be composed, however: The Fair Melusine, which Mendelssohn wrote after having heard an opera based on the old French tale of the water spirit Mélusine and her sad fate. Water – and its depiction in music – also plays an important role in The Hebrides, the closing work on the present recording.

Allan PETTERSSONSymphony No. 13Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, Christian Lindberg

Allan Pettersson concerned himself almost exclusively with the symphonic genre for three decades leading to ‘the last symphonist’ moniker that he was attributed in Sweden. He completed his Symphony No. 13 in August 1976, as a commission by the Bergen Festival for its 25th anniversary the following year, however, the work was not performed in Sweden until Christian Lindberg and the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra played it in concert in 2014. Like the majority of Pettersson’s symphonies it is in one movement, harbouring the great contrasts between an atonal and a traditional, tonal idiom that characterise the composer’s musical language. A noteworthy feature in the present work is the presence of many brief allusions to other composers – from Beethoven (with the theme to the Fifth Symphony) to D-S-C-H, the musical cryptogram of Shostakovich’s name.

High, Low or In BetweenKatarina Henryson, Svante Henryson

Katarina and Svante Henryson have carved out quite extraordinary careers: Katarina touring internationally as a member of the highly successful Swedish vocal ensemble The Real Group, and Svante appearing in the most varied collaborations with musicians as diverse as Elvis Costello, Anne Sofie von Otter, Chico Freeman and Martin Fröst. The repertoire on High, Low or In Between is as varied as it gets. Pop songs by Elton John and George Harrison rub shoulders with Prince’s funk hit Kiss, Bill Evans’s jazz classic Waltz for Debby and Tom Jobim’s bossa nova Chega de Saudade. These last two Katarina performs in the versions made immortal by the Swedish jazz singer Monica Zetterlund, while a third song to a Swedish text, Det växer från Edens tider, also displays its Swedish origins proudly through its folk-like idiom. A handful of tracks consist of original material by the performers themselves – Eyes of a Child they wrote together after the birth of their son – including three cello improvisations and Svante’s instrumental piece Green.

Chiel MEIJERINGRock that FluteConcerto movements for Eagle recorder and strings by Chiel Meijering

Dan Laurin1B1, Jan Bjøranger

Dutch composer Chiel Meijering began to write for the recorder as early as 1979 and developed a passion for the new model of ‘Eagle’ recorder, conceived in 2008. Recorder virtuoso Dan Laurin was struck by the very personal language in the compositions of Meijering whose music was divided by the composer into four categories – dreamy, nostalgic, rocking and metal. Soon thoughts of making a recording emerged, and took definite shape when the third, vital piece of the puzzle was found: the fresh, young string ensemble 1B1 from Stavanger in Norway, and its founder, the dynamic violinist Jan Bjøranger.

Aaron COPLANDBilly the Kid; Rodeo Billy the Kid and Rodeo (complete ballet scores); An Outdoor Overture; El Salón México

Colorado Symphony, Andrew Litton

Having taken up the post of music director with the Colorado Symphony in 2013, Andrew Litton has chosen a highly fitting programme for the orchestra’s first recording on BIS: the Wild West, its folk music, traditions and legends loom large in Aaron Copland’s ballet scores Billy the Kid and Rodeo. The slightly earlier El Salón México, inspired by a visit to a dancehall in Mexico, is equally evocative, using Mexican themes. The other work on this disc – An Outdoor Overture – is something of a rarity. The overture was part of an educational campaign with the slogan ‘American Music for American Youth’ and its snappy rhythms and colourful orchestration will have made it as successful in its original purpose as it is here, as a curtain raiser. The Colorado Symphony is obviously enjoying itself in this all-American programme, as is its conductor Andrew Litton, who joins the revelry as honky-tonk pianist in the ‘Celebration’ section of Billy the Kid and the ‘Ranch House Party’ in Rodeo, before bringing the disc to a rollicking end in that ballet’s closing section, ‘Hoe-Down’.

The disc concludes with Pygott’s extraordinary Salve regina, one of the longest votive antiphons extant and a marvel of rhetorical expression.

RICHTERThe 100th Anniversary Edition

Sviatoslav Richter

For the 100th anniversary of Sviatoslav Richter, Melodiya presents the biggest project in its history. Although the name of Sviatoslav Richter is inscribed in gold in the history of music, he was ‘more than a pianist’. An owner of composing, conducting, artistic, directing and acting gifts, a connoisseur of literature, arts and philosophy, he was an ‘artist of planetary scale’, as one critic put it. However, Richter remained indifferent to ovation and eulogies of the press, painfully experienced each of the ‘defects’ he noticed in his performance, and confessed before the journalist Bruno Monsaingeon: ‘I don’t like myself’. Melodiya, recently marking its 50th birthday, now releases a 50-CD set of Sviatoslav Richter’s concert recordings, featuring plenty of exclusive, previously unreleased recordings that will make the hearts of even the most erudite connoisseurs and collectors rejoice.

These orchestral songs by the English composer Michael Csányi-Wills (b. 1975) best known for his film music – all deal with the subject of loss. In Budapest, 1944 Csányi-Wills uses documentation from his own family history to shadow the fate of Hungary’s Jews under the Nazis. Mortality is an omnipresent theme in A. E. Housman’s Shropshire Lad poems, and Elegy for Our Time sets an anguished lament by Jessica d’Este, sparked by the death of her granddaughter in a car crash. Csányi-Wills responds to the stimulus of these dark texts with music that is hauntingly lyrical and elegiac.

Axel Köhler’s production of Der Freischütz at the Dresden State Opera was described by Die Presse as ‘a minor miracle in Dresden’. In the words of the Salzburger Nachrichten, Köhler ‘scored a bullseye’ with his sombre and satanic interpretation of Weber’s romantic opera about love, temptation, souls sold to the Devil, obsession and faith. According to the Financial Times, Christian Thielemann and the Dresden Staatskapelle conjured up a sense of ‘mortal terror from the orchestra pit. […] Thielemann is in command of every detail. That makes for utterly gripping listening. […] Michael König’s sullen Max has a gloriously free upper register and heroic weight; Sara Jakubiak makes a sweet-toned, melancholic Agathe’.

‘Rejoice, exult’ – John Neumeier turns Bach’s Christmas Oratorio into an experience that confronts us all with the most basic questions of hope, faith, doubt and self-sacrifice: ‘My choreography is not a religious undertaking. We perform to Bach’s music, for a few hours, unifying individuals of many different cultural and religious backgrounds. For me, the basic human values expressed through the choreography are always the most important thing. Therefore, in my ballet, Mary is known simply as ‘the Mother’ and Joseph as ‘her Husband’’. Teatro alla Scala The Golden Years Vol. 3Enzo Biagi was one of Italy’s most famous and respected journalists. His love of the prestigious Milanese venue inspired the programmes he made during the period 1981-82, which we are now presenting on DVD. Documenting the La Scala productions from those years, Biagi attended rehearsals and interviewed the conductors, singers and directors of the time. That documentary series, originally produced on 16 mm film, has now been restored and made available to a wider public by Dynamic. This final DVD of the series is dedicated to La Scala’s 1981 tour of Japan. Biagi talks with Claudio Abbado about the role of the conductor, his colleagues, and the rivalry with Riccardo Muti. There is behind-the-scenes footage of Verdi’s Otello, with Placido Domingo in the title role, and an in-depth discussion with Domingo covering: his debut at La Scala, his difficult beginnings and his future projects. Also featured is an interview with baritone Piero Cappuccilli, a conversation with Mirella Freni: her debut, her success, her colleagues and her sources of inspiration, and footage of Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra, with Piero Cappuccilli, Mirella Freni, and Nicolai Ghiaurov.

Turandot is Giacomo Puccini’s tenth and last opera. He spent almost four years writing it from 1921-1924; in fact, just days before his death on 29th November 1924, Puccini was still working on it. The opera was left incomplete and an ending was written, on Arturo Toscanini’s suggestion, by the composer Franco Alfano (1876-1954). From a musical point of view, Turandot is the most modern and innovative of Puccini’s operas, encapsulating the hallmarks of Puccini’s style. His extraordinary orchestration skills are applied here with unprecedented care. The use of large instrumental forces translates into new tone-colour effects which, together with this production’s stunning sets and sumptuous costumes, confirms Turandot as one of Puccini’s most powerful and original operas.
