I think Christmas is the happiest time of year, kicking off with the Deaf Trust’s lights! Always Magnifi cent! The town centre lights and Frenchgate look impressive too.

I’ve a few thankyou’s this issue. Firstly I thought I’d lost my phone whilst distributing in town. Next morning I couldn’t fi nd it. I called it, but silence prevailed (and that sick feeling you get when your life is stored on it). I retraced my steps aided by the lovely staff from Absolute Cabs and The Mason’s. They helped beyond the call of duty, THANK YOU both. I can report the stupid thing turned up!! I know you’re wondering where, I’m loathe to say! Ok , it was on the sofa with the sound muted! Don’t you feel daft sometimes? Anyhow I’m sorted for next

time, now I can locate it online!I paid tribute to many Doncaster Heroes this issue. I am in awe of these individuals. So my next THANK YOU goes to The M25 Group, The Shoebox Appeal, The Salvation Army, Doncaster Foodbank and Churches Together In Central Doncaster. These amazing people combine to look after the homeless and vulnerable throughout the year giving them a good Christmas too. So that just leaves me to thank you for helping us launch successfully and all your kind feedback. 2015 looks very exciting at Deal Hound HQ and we can’t wait to bring you more great ideas and money saving tips.

The homeless have to endure their plight every day of the year, but somehow Christmas, with its promise of good times and family gatherings, compounds their predicament considerably. Not many of us can imagine the torment and feelings of isolation the homeless in Doncaster experience.In fact for the most part they are the forgotten. How grateful we are then to those brave souls who commit to doing something about this situation. Doncaster people are renowned for their kindness.So we’ve picked some homeless orientated charities you can support this year.

M25 HomelessM25 HomelessCharityCharityThis charity started in in 1994. From humble beginnings it now

has 60 staff members, with a combination of paid workers and volunteers. They all have the same aim to provide a host of services to the homeless and those needing support. They have supported accommodation, support people in their own homes, and there’s a dedicated young person’s benefi ts, debt and housing advice Service. The Rough Sleeper Outreach Service works with those sleeping on our streets offering support, accommodation and advice. Working in line with the government’s “No Second Night Out Policy”, when they meet those sleeping rough they aim to fi nd temporary accommodation that same day. car. My beloved MG is

still in the garage and

likely to be there for some

time. I thought it best to

the meantime, what with

and my legs playing up

looks dead neat too, and I’m really chuffed at

This unexpected outlay has hit my Christmas

budget though, so I can’t run to my usual self

this year apparently, I got slated last year for

just giving money. So this year it’s shopping

Well it’s been all go here for weeks now. I’ve

been busy preparing Christmas from start

to fi nish. Pete hates it all being so expertly

planned, but I have to know who’s coming to

stay, who’s just coming to dinner, what they

eat, drink, like to do and present ideas. Since

I am doing all the work, I don’t think it’s too

much to ask Pete to collate all this information.

We usually just get organised by midnight on

Christmas Eve, but I want it sorted out sooner

this year.

So far I have a Vegan, Celiac and a picky child

(who only eats sweets!) to cater for. The fi rst

Christ Church DoncasterChrist Church DoncasterDoncaster Foodbank is literally a life saver for many people. Shirley Donnelly, Distribution Manager and volunteer explained that the people who benefi t are a real cross section of our community who have fallen on hard times; some have been made redundant, are on low incomes, are older people, young mums, or have suffered benefi t sanctions.

Inside the food bank there is a magnifi cent atmosphere of friendship, kindess and acceptance.

Maybe this is because it isn’t only the donation of food that is on hand here, there’s also a friendly face. Too. Some people need practical support, and there are volunteers available to give just that, whether it’s signposting to other agencies, or just providing a listening ear.

If you require help from the food bank please obtain a voucher from any of the main agencies such as, the Job Centre, Women’s Centre, Women’s Aid, Council Offi ces, Social Workers,

Children’s Centre. You will receive up to three vouchers and the Food Bank is open on Fridays

from 1pm – 3pm.

If you can donate please make cheques payable to Doncaster Foodbank or contribute food items such as, tinned meat, tinned fruit, tinned vegetables, cooking sauces, sugar, tea, coffee, UHT milk, UHT fruit juice. No out of date goods or fresh products please.

All the charities have explained how kind and caring the people of Doncaster are. There is a real community spirit in our town. It’s good to

think of those vulnerable and alone, especially at this joyful time of year. However the problem is all year round. So if you can offer any ongoing support it would be appreciated. Don’t let the homeless in Doncaster become the forgotten. Here at Deal Hound HQ we can’t imagine what it’s like spending even one night on the streets.

THE MINCE PIE TASTE OFFTHE MINCE PIE TASTE OFFWe’re demanding at Deal Hound HQ about our mince pies. So we thought our excessive fussyness gave us card blanc to eat copious amounts , ranking them accordingly.We chose 5 brands from Asda, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Iceland and Coopland’s , and critiqued them on price, looks, fl avour and overall enjoyability. Here’s our results.

Asda 85p for 62nd Cheapest. Scored joint Lowest 5/10. Looks were fi ne, price was great, but the taste was lacking.

Cooplands 50p each Most expensive. Scored joint lowest 5/10. They looked homemade (which we liked), had very thick pastry but the mincemeat didn’t hit the spot.

Tesco £1 for 6Mid-range scored 7/10. A good price, they looked fi ne & tasted ok. A good mince pie but nothing memorable… and we wanted more pie for our pennies!

Iceland £1.50 for 12!Cheapest scored 8/10 & came 2nd. The wow factor is the price! Everyone liked the looks, fl avour and overall enjoyability. They could’ve been a winner!

Sainsbury’s £1.30 for 6Winner, scored 9/10. These pies stand out on looks, taste and overall enjoyability. They’re deep fi lled and we thought they had the best quality mincemeat. They were the second most expensive.
