Weird Wars

Chapter One:Dead From Above

Aerial warfare is a fairly new concept inthe overall history of warfare, but it didn’ttake long for man to develop it once hefinally figured out how to get his fat rearoff the ground and into the clouds. Lessthan two decades after man first tookwing, he was up there in the skies withweapons hunting his own kind. Just goesto prove that the more things change, themore they stay the same.

The early combat aircraft were crudeand primitive. The first aerial combatsactually consisted of pilots and observersfiring pistols at each other. This quicklyprogressed to a machinegun strappedonto the upper wing and then tosophisticated synchronized guns thatcould actually fire between the blades ofa spinning propeller.

The aircraft of World War I were just aprelude of things to come, however. It wasduring the Second World War that aircrafttruly proved the decisive effect they couldhave on the outcome of a war. Theaircraft of World War II were faster, stronger, and could carry many times overthe weaponry of their predecessors. Atthe war’s start an aircraft capable of 250mph was considered an adequate fighteraircraft; by the war’s end, jet fighters hadtaken to the sky and the sound barrierwas not that far out of reach.

The German Luftwaffe was the first todemonstrate the new found power of theaircraft. German stukas, operating inconjunction with armor, paved the way forthe rapid conquests of both Poland andFrance. During the French campaign, thedestruction of a French armored columnalmost entirely through air power pointedthe way for the future of modern aircombat.

The war also highlighted theweaknesses of air power. Both the Battleof Britain and the Allied strategicbombing campaign showed that air poweralone wasn’t enough to win wars. Somepoor grunt still had to risk his neck onthe ground and actually plant a flag onthe rubble the bombers created. All thosebombs dropped on the enemies’ headsmade the foot soldier’s life a lot easier, however.

Be that as it may, air power played apivotal role in World War II. This bookpresents all the rules you need to makean air warrior and head off into the wildblue yonder. You’ll find a new characterclass, the Pilot, new feats, and moreequipment than you can shake a deadgremlin at. If you’re ready to join the ranksof the elite airmen and be the angels onthe shoulders of the poor, dustygroundpounders, just turn the page.
