Fall Edition of the Southeast Training Calendar

As we enter the month of September, we think of children returning to school, cool evenings, and for many of us, back to our normal routines. The Fall reminds us of a new Season of beginnings. The Learning and Staff Development Team is beginning a new Season as well. During the recent months, the Learning and Development Team has been reviewing the training needs of our staff, families and the individuals that we support. After considerable review and evaluation, we made several changes and will be introducing new training initiatives throughout the year. With the development of the Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Program, and the Autism/ Prader Willi Division, we will combine our efforts in order to address these training needs. In addition, I would like to introduce you to some of the new members that will be joining us in our Regional Trainings. Debra Dunn, Clinical Director and her staff, Kyle Grace and Tonya Davis will be offering trainings in Non-Violent Management of Aggressive Behaviors. Debra and her staff bring new insights to providing support to individuals that require additional assistance.

Nathan Hoover is our Human Rights Specialist and will be offering Training in “Advocacy for All.” Nate has a passion for preserving the Rights of all individuals. Nathan is strong advocate for the individuals that we support and has a wealth of expertise and resources which he readily shares with all.

Maureen joins George McCauley, another Regional Trainer. George has been the Professor of record for Direct Support Certificate Program at Bristol Community College for the last 8 years. George’s training skills are exceptional and are presented in a variety of disciplines. Lastly, I want to provide you with a list of the Training Committees that exist in the Southeast Region. Please contact me if you are interested in joining any of the Training Committees. It is my hope that you will find the Training Calendar full of exciting Training opportunities that you will avail yourselves of. Please contact me if you have any questions, or suggestions. “The Virtue of any Organization does not reside in the organizational structure, nor the policies and procedures. BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS

“To deny people their human rights is to challenge

their very humanity.” Nelson Mandela

Basic constitutional rights protect each and every person living in the United States. Employees need to understand these rights for themselves so that they can effectively support and protect the people they support. This training discusses constitutional rights, general human rights principles, the system for safeguarding human rights, the role of an employee as a DPPC mandated reporter, and why these rights are a fundamental requirement in our work. *No one will be admitted to Basic Human Rights Training after the first fifteen minutes, so please be on time. This training meets one of the DDS Orientation requirements for new employees. Presented by: George McCauley Date & Time: Thursday, November 19th/ 1:00pm-4:00pm Place: DDS Fall River Area Office

REFRESHER: HUMAN RIGHTS

This class is designed for staff that have already completed “Basic Human Rights,” which is a pre-requisite to this refresher class. This session will be a discussion by all participants of situations involving conflict over rights issues as they occur in the lives of the people we support. We will examine current & ongoing situations together to plan responses which take into account not only rights but also our responsibilities to one another. This session will also review types of abuse and mistreatment as well as DPPC mandated reporting. Time is allowed for questions and answers. Self-Determination, the Next Horizon

This training will review the impact of various attempts to make positive changes within our service delivery system with an emphasis on how an increased scope for self-determination has the potential to move us beyond where we are now. Time & Place: October 19, 2015 9:30am to noon Community Systems Inc. 3 Cedarhill Park Drive, Plymouth REGISTRATION: [email protected]

“Selection” and the Lessons of History

One little-known and often misunderstood episode of the Holocaust was the systematic mass murder of people with physical or mental impairments, in which physicians designed and led a program which killed over 300,000 Germans from 1939 through 1945. This lecture will describe the so-called “euthanasia” program and will place it in historical perspective by analyzing its antecedents, its sponsorship, its justifications, the opposition to it, how it helped lead to the subsequent mass murder of the Jews, and especially its lessons for the current debates over the medical ethics of life and death as they involve people with impairments. The German episode will be compared with American eugenics ideas and practices, both past and present. Jack Yates, the presenter for this class, works in staff development for People, Incorporated, in Fall River, and has worked in services for people with mental impairments for over forty years. For several years Jack taught a graduate course at the Harvard Divinity School entitled “The Inclusive Community.” [email protected]

BASIC FIRE SAFETY TRAINING

The primary purpose of fire safety training is to give staff an orientation to the actions they can take to prevent as well as respond to a fire in a home. The training emphasizes prevention, preparedness and response. Through lecture, slide and video format, trainers sensitize staff to the serious consequences of a fire and the importance of developing an effective evacuation plan and practicing the evacuation procedures so that everyone is aware of what to do in a fire emergency. It will provide participants with basic information about the causes and types of fires, as well as fire prevention, hazard identification, smoke and smoke detectors, and evacuation procedures. Prevention, preparedness, types of fire extinguishment, and response are the key elements of this training. This curriculum is the DDS approved Fire Safety Training To receive a certificate, individuals must attend the entire training. The Southeast Region of the Department of Developmental Services presents Working with People Diagnosed with Developmental Disabilities at Risk

for Problematic Sexual Behaviors in the Community

Roy A. Dudley, LICSW

Friday, September 11th, 2015

9:00 am – 4:30 pm SouthEast Regional Office of the Department of Developmental Services

151 Campanelli Dr., Suite B., Middleboro MA 02330

Increasingly, the Department is being charged with supporting individuals in the community that have problematic sexual behaviors, from non-adjudicated individuals with paraphilias (e.g., frotteurism, voyeurism) to consumers who have been labeled as “level 3” by the Sex Offender Registry Board (SORB). The implications of such labels and levels on the rights, freedoms, and responsibilities of

the people we serve are unique and frequently misunderstood by administrators and direct care staff alike. This training will educate Area Office and provider staff on the law, the motivations behind problematic sexual behaviors, and the unique dilemmas that arise for individuals with Developmental Disabilities and their community-based staff. Administrators will be interested in understanding the risks involved when serving someone with such a profile. Direct care staff will learn to watch out for certain types of behaviors

(e.g., “grooming”) that could be related to problematic sexual behaviors and the likelihood of reoccurrence. Clinicians and Service Coordinators will learn about the law and how to coach and educate staff to engage in a working relationship with their shared

clients to keep them from getting into trouble with community partners and the law.

Mr. Dudley is the former Assistant Deputy Superintendent of Treatment at the Hampden County Sheriff's Department and Correctional Center, where he was responsible for overall case management and clinical supervision of staff, treatment program design, and treatment provision, with a focus on crimes of interpersonal violence, specifically sexual offense perpetrators and survivors, and Domestic Violence

situations. He has worked in corrections for more than 35 years, specializing in the treatment of sexual trauma and chemical dependency, and addictive disorders. He has provided expert testimony in sex offender and survivor treatment, and sexual trauma in the Commonwealth's

District, Superior, Probate Courts, Federal Courts, and the Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry Board, providing psychosexual evaluations and risk assessments on offenders, in addition to ongoing treatment. He has been a consultant to the Universityof Massachusetts Medical School, Department of Psychiatry, Forensic Unit, as well as a number of western Mass agencies. He has consulted to the Massachusetts Depts. of Corrections, Parole, Probation, and Education on a statewide level as a trainer in sexual trauma, and sex offender and survivor

treatment and management.

Please contact the DDS Area Office to register for this Training

September 21, 2015 Dear Colleagues: I think you would agree with me that as our community system and workforce matures it is more important than ever to do everything possible to support leadership development. Many of the challenges faced years ago by consumers and their families still exist today, and it is critical that we continue to support the personal and professional development of individuals called to respond to these challenges. For this reason and the belief that a new generation of leaders must be cultivated if the gains we have made the past 30 years are to be sustained, the Southeast DDS Region for the fourth consecutive year is sponsoring its leadership training series, “Developing Leadership: A Personal Journey.” The number of available slots is extremely limited so I encourage you to act and act quickly to encourage any qualified candidates to apply. Perhaps you are interested, or know of a staff member, parent, board member or consumer who you feel has made an exceptional commitment to people with intellectual, brain injuries or other developmental disabilities, who would benefit from this experience. The leadership series is of high quality and beneficial to everyone who participates. Our lead trainer, Deborah Reidy, has worked with leaders in nonprofits, community organizations and government for many years and recently published a book, “Why Not lead? A Primer for Families of People with Disabilities and their Allies.” I hope you agree with me on the need for this kind of experience and give it your serious consideration. If you would like more information please contact Dianne Rodrigues at 508-866-8879 and she would be happy to speak with you. Sincerely, Richard J. O’Meara Richard J. O’Meara

Getting Ready For An Emergency Emergencies like floods, storms or pandemic flu can

happen to lots of people at once. Be prepared so you know what to do.

Would your group like a free emergency preparedness training? Self-advocate Nate Trull trains consumers and support staff about getting ready for emergencies. He has trained over 100 people in Massachusetts.

He can train your group in two ways: (1) a two part training where each part takes about an hour and a half on two different days; or (2) a one-time training that takes about two hours. There is no cost for the training, but your group will need to provide a room, a screen or wall for a PowerPoint® presentation, a power point projector, and an audience. People who come to the workshop will get presentation handouts, a folder of information, and consumers will receive small items to start their own supply kits.
